She started as a volunteer on the marketing committee lending her publishing experience (Harper's Bazaar and Gourmet magazines), e-commerce (Bond No. 9 Fragrances and Louis Vuitton), and digital marketing (Perry Ellis brands) in New York City and Miami to support ASSA. Brie is a graduate of The U of A Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program and received her MA in communications from ASU. The Autism Society of Southern Arizona provides unbiased information and referral services at no cost. We are typically the “first call” parents or individuals with autism make when learning about the diagnosis. We provide information on therapy options, legal considerations, transition resources, schooling, and much more. Our website features a comprehensive listing of Southern Arizona providers and resources. We also provide customized autism training to schools, organizations, and businesses about our ever-evolving understanding of autism. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a complex, lifelong developmental condition that typically appears during early childhood and can impact a person's social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. The Autism experience is different for everyone. It is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is often referred to as a “spectrum condition” that affects people differently and to varying degrees. 1 in 40 Or 2.5% of 8-year-old children in an area of Arizona were identified with ASD by ADDSP (Arizona Developmental Disabilities Surveillance Program) in 2018. This April, the Autism Society celebrates Autism Acceptance Month. Every day, we work to create connections, empowering everyone in the Autism community to live fully. Be the connection this April to spreading awareness for early diagnosis, promoting inclusion in the greater community, and practicing acceptance in everyday life. Together with the Pima County Superintendent's Office, we have created a proclamation to designate April as Autism Acceptance Month for Pima County. We offer programs for individuals across the lifespan from parent trainings, teen meetups, adult social club, social skills classes, Autism Friendly Communities, and our Navigating Autism Program. This Autism Acceptance Month, you can be the connection to help us fulfill our mission. • Educate yourself and share resources • Take action through advocacy • Connect to a local Autism Society affiliate • Attend an Autism Society event • Host a fundraiser • Donate, every dollar helps We are a staff of three part-time parents of children with an autism diagnosis. We just hired a new program/grant coordinator this week! Every day we provide support, programs, and information to the community. We envision a world where everyone in the Autism community is connected to the support they need when they need it - including education, advocacy efforts, and supports and services throughout the lifespan. The impact we are striving for now is to help others understand the importance of fostering acceptance which can lead to improved support and to achieve equity in education, employment, housing, health care and comprehensive long-term service. I continued on with an MS in Biological and Forensic Anthropology from Mercyhurst University. After graduation, I studied trends in pediatric skeletal growth for the National Institute of Justice. After a severe injury, I began to study the regenerative mechanisms of the body accessed through touch, movement, & the energetic healing systems. My work is at the intersection of biology and culture, centering on the value of human connection in healing everything from cells to society. Delivering integrative healing therapies to underserved populations drew me to Integrative Touch's pioneering community-based model, first as a volunteer, and now as Program Director. I am passionate about supporting a child in the hospital to feel seen as their whole healthy self at any point in their care journey. With our unique approach, we are also able to serve their siblings, parents, doctors, and nurses to experience this feeling, creating an integrated network of support for everyone. I truly adore designing and delivering team-based wellness services that relieve suffering with love in home, healthcare, and community settings. I am particularly passionate about scaling and replicating this work to empower caregivers and health systems at all levels. Integrative Touch (InTouch) is working to transform the way people experience healthcare. A leader in the field of pediatric integrative medicine, the organization supports caregivers and families whose children have any type of special health or medical need. Episode 53 and Wendi and Dfernando's guest interview is fashion illustrator and artist Richard Haines.  Richard Haines moved to Manhattan in the 1970s and proceeded to rack up the La Ronde of résumés. He dreamed of becoming a fashion illustrator, but after discovering that was a dead career, he became a successful clothing designer for the likes of Calvin Klein, Perry Ellis, Bill Blass to J.Crew. In 2008, he lost his job and Fifth Avenue apartment in the financial crash, then reinstalled himself in Brooklyn as a fashion illustrator.Haine's career has now come full circle allowing him to emerge as one of today's most sought after fashion illustrators. His illustrations document the clothes and attitudes of New York's every day trendsetters and fashion icons of all ages. Haines is commonly seen seated front row at Fashion Week's most desirable shows busily drawing on his sketchpad or iPad for clients who hire him to record the nuances that cannot be captured on film.It is his fascination with the people behind the styles that informs his every stroke. Propelling his work beyond mere sketches and into the world where art and fashion intersect. Haines balances a busy stream of clients while drawing everything he sees from high couture fashion in Europe to the youths in his Bushwick, Brooklyn neighborhood.Today his illustrations are blown up in store windows, splashed over Criterion Collection covers, used in collaborations with Dries Van Noten and collected in gallery shows like “The History of Beauty,” which presents 25 new pieces alongside work from the masters that inspired Haines, including Jean Cocteau and Paul Cadmus, plus collages and an outsize wall hanging that nods to Christian Bérard, the Parisian set designer who influenced Dior.Richard Haines' work is on display at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York's Chelsea district and check out his Instagram for his upcoming Illustration Master Classes. Also on Episode 53, Wendi and Dfernando chat about Wendi's recent first-time visit to New Orleans and her touring the famous haunted Bourbon Orleans Hotel, the Andrew Jackson Hotel and the LaLaurie Mansion, a night-time vampire tour and those gators.   They also chat about their recent appearance on Season 7 of ABC TV's iconic game show CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD.  On the RIPE & ROTTEN REPORT, Wendi and Dfernando rave about the fantastic Canadian comedy series JANN (now on Hulu), starring award winning singer-songwriter, best-selling author and actress Jann Arden, the return of the nightly random fireworks, and when you want to take your bike for a ride and the tires are flat.  Watch Wendi and Dfernando and their Team GENERATION RIPE: Greg Covey, Shelley McLendon and Ponciana Badia on Season 7 Episode 2 of CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD - now on ABC OnDemand and Hulu.    Follow us on our Instagram:Wendi McLendon-CoveyDfernando ZarembaGENERATION RIPE... and our guest Richard Haines and his Twitter Remember to subscribe, rate & leave a review for GENERATION RIPEVisit Dfernando Zaremba's website: dfernandozaremba.com

"By the time I was 40, I had a great track record of designing for other people – Giorgio Armani, Anne Klein, Perry Ellis, Paco Rabanne – and I joined Gap to head up their global design team in 2007. But then I started hearing stories from our denim factories: The rivers downstream were blue from all the dyes, and the fish and the water that these communities depended on were becoming contaminated. So I decided to do something about it: I committed to making sure that all the water leaving Gap's denim factories would be cleaner than when it went in. We printed everything that we did for clean water on the garments – because I thought people cared and they should know. The initiative was a huge success. That was the first time I understood that if we could be smart about it, we could do good business that was also good for the environment. Deep down inside, we don't seek the meaning of life, but the experience of being alive. - Joseph Campbell A few years later my son and I were walking down our street in New York and he asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. At first, I laughed - but it was actually a great question. Because somewhere along the way I had stopped designing clothes and had become the guy who manages the people who design the clothes. And then, on a backpacking trip in Yosemite National Park, I started thinking: Why is it that skiers, trekkers, and triathletes always get the best of what's new in clothing? Their apparel is strong and light, water-repellant, nearly indestructible, resistant to sweat and bacteria, flexible, multifunctional, and comfortable for a long haul. As a lifelong adventurer, I dreamed of utilizing cutting-edge technology from fitness, backpacking, and adventure gear to design comfortable clothing that's stylish enough to for work and play. I imagined going from a flight to a hike to a meeting to dinner wearing one completely comfortable, utterly beautiful, incredibly sustainable outfit - making it easier to focus on life's journey. Paskho is built to suit the freedom-seeker and the maverick nomadic and the fearless observer, all together. - Patrick Robinson That idea became Paskho. First, I designed with reclaimed fabrics, which allowed me to create limited-edition pieces and prevent more waste from going into the landfill. As we grew, I worked with my fair trade factory to add sustainable textiles and reduce waste. We eliminated unnecessary plastic polybags, and from the very first day we donated a percentage of sales to environmental causes through 1% for the Planet. You can read more about our commitments on our sustainability page. Paskho is built to suit the freedom-seeker and the maverick nomadic and the fearless observer, all together. It excites the possibility of discovery -both inward and outward. Paskho speaks to the interconnectedness of our world, and inspires you to find new greater personal freedoms. I believe design has the capacity to elevate us emotionally and spiritually. Great design isn't just a question of pretty aesthetics; it's really a question of how we want to live our lives. I am honored that you have chosen to join me on this journey." Insider Interviews
CMO Kim Wijkstrom: Start with the Brand Story not Silver Bullets

Insider Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 11, 2021

Joakim (Kim) Wijkstrom, SVP / CMO of Vanda Pharmaceuticals, has learned to “Think Different” and have “Lending Done Human.” He has sent little, teeny Absolut bottle-shaped Christmas sweaters to readers of the New York Times, and leveraged Andy Warhol style pop op to promote schizophrenia drugs. A Swede who grew up in West Africa, Kim also opened the Latin America markets for two TBWAChiatDay clients. If that sounds like the start of a good story, then that’s the point. Because for this marketer it always starts with the story, not the silver bullets. Kim has developed a “cultural curiosity” from both moving around and a liberal arts degree, which has been a big asset in his marketing career: “I think advertising lends itself naturally to someone who is interested in how we shape and creatively express our worldview, how we understand the things around us, how perceptions are shaped. So, I think it made sense for me to land there. But as it turns out, I'm half a humanist, half of something more analytical. Perhaps I was never going to be the next Leonardo...[but] you figure out the way to take whatever you're equipped with and put it to use where it is best applied.” This attitude is also encompassed in his top performing article in The Continuum, the publication I edit about “brand and demand” marketing. In that, and in this follow-up conversation about the origins of his branding philosophy, Kim sticks with the story that brand always must start with the story! The delivery tactics -- what he has called the silver bullets – are secondary. But when you’re talking to a storyteller you cover a lot of ground. We also discuss: How movies are an analogy for Kim’s point of view about storytelling first Why our obsession with technological solutions to everything don’t drive brand loyalty (“You can now have your car tell you that you're low on milk because your smart refrigerator is coupled with your car, and so forth. But are you going to buy the refrigerator based on that? Do you think it's a quality refrigerator?”) Why too much emphasis on bells and whistles and focus on demand or performance-driven marketing “offends” him (“Fundamentally, all marketing is for performance purposes... to grow your market share. You need to start with what is it you’re trying to say and why would it be compelling to people, as opposed to just being the method by which you can deliver the message.”) Why even DTC companies’ product is often the story... such as Warby Parker’s design How our obsession with metrics and attribution is not wrong but often misses the point entirely, focused on the ROI, as opposed to just “can you see if it's working?” (“If people are talking about your TV spot or have a positive reaction to it somehow then that's probably more important than any sort of little blip of metrics.”) And, just as he learned from hovering around Steve Jobs, Kim offers advice for junior marketers. But wait, as they say, there’s MORE!... Kim also explains the story of Vanda, and his move from marketing men’s suits (Perry Ellis) or financial services (One Main Financial) to pharma. He gives an example of how the same story (for a particular drug) can be extended into different spaces, like digital to video without having to be, well, prescriptive! (And, yes, we discuss the challenge of pharmaceutical advertising and FDA constrictions. But check out their innovative approach to Fanapt for insider insights on  how it can still be impactful.) And I finally got to understand what’s behind drug NAMING! So, how did Kim finesse his own “brand story” – or POV about storytelling? Well, that starts with a guy named Steve Jobs. “I was really lucky I got to work on Apple when it came back to TBWAChiatDay ... and that was the launch of the now-iconic Apple campaign "Think Different." I was a junior person then, so I'm not claiming any credit for the campaign...but what was amazing was encountering Steve Jobs and seei...

On this episode Abadesi talks to Michelle Bacharach, founder and CEO of FINDMINE, a retail technology company that uses machine learning to scale the currently manual and tedious process of product curation. They are a fast-growing company with clients like Adidas, Perry Ellis, and Callaway. In this episode they talk about...What led Michelle to found FINDMINE, and how they’re changing the buying experience“We’re trying to close the information gap between the customer, who isn’t an expert on what they’re buying, and the brand, who is an expert at what they’re selling. The customer gets better information and spends more money and the brand is happier because they make more revenue and they save time."The inspiration for FINDMINE came from Michelle’s experiences as a shopper. She says that she struggled with buying things that might have looked intriguing at the point of purchase, but realized later that she didn’t have the use for it that she thought she did, or it didn’t work with the rest of her purchases, as with a couch that didn’t match. She says that she started the company to help the people at companies who know the most about products and their potential use cases transfer that information to the buyers of those products. She says that they are using machine learning to hone the marketing campaigns for products and in the process saving time for those selling products and increasing customer satisfaction on the buyer’s side.“Artificial intelligence and automation are very valuable when there’s a bottleneck of human effort, and we scale out creative human effort. The starting point is a human they set the vision for what this fashion brands stands for and how they define style.”Her advice for startups pitching big companies as potential clients“Pitch the companies that you’re trying to land as clients. Maybe one takes a chance on you and if nothing else, you’re going to learn a lot, like what features are important and what the product feedback is.”Michelle explains how, as a relatively young company, they have landed contracts with so many big-name brands. She explains the process that she used to pitch them, and talks about her key pieces of advice for smaller companies pitching bigger ones. She says that it makes sense to aim for clients that have fewer legal requirements for suppliers when you’re just getting started.“People don't necessarily always know they have a problem or the severity of the problem that they have or how to tackle it. You can get analysis paralysis from a customer sometimes. When they realize there's a problem, that's half the battle. They may realize we are the solution, but they don't know how to start using the tools.“How to close enterprise customers“It’s so funny because our whole mission is to help the buyer understand how to be successful with the product that they’re buying and that’s exactly the same thing that we have to do for our customers. They have less information about how to be successful with our FINDMINE technology than we do and we have to close that gap for them. It’s so full circle.”She walks through the process of landing a client from the initial pitch to signing the contract. She says that it’s important to educate your customers on the true value of the product to them when they don’t know exactly what kind of problem they have or how to solve it, let alone with new technologies that they may be unfamiliar with. She talks about the value of case studies and why successfully landing just one client can lead to many more. We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. We sat down with the former KU standout to talk about that, as well as rehabbing from a knee injury and trying to resume his professional career. He made a unique choice about where to rehab and how to stay busy: In Lawrence while working with the KU basketball support staff. It's a move with one eye toward the future.
