This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is highlighting Green Man Brewery. On the show is Green Man's co-owner Dennis Thies and Taproom Manager Eric MacDonald from Asheville, NC. Dennis starts by taking us back to 2008 when he first discovered the Asheville craft beer scene. He then lets us in on who the mythical “Green Man” truly is, and how he polished the brand up once he became the new owner. What separates Green Man from other breweries is that they actually have two taprooms side-by-side, offering very different experiences. Eric walks us through the Green Mansion, a 3-story taproom offering a completely new experience of drinking craft beer. The two discuss how a brewery can really change a neighborhood, and Dennis even gives us a craft beer walking tour itinerary to make sure you hit all the spots. To wrap up the show, Dennis reminisces on growing up in a beer sales family and highlights some of his oldest distribution and customer service memories, inspiring us all to take a leap of faith and get into the world of brewing. Green Man Brewery was the first taproom in Downtown Asheville Lovingly dubbed Dirty Jack's, Green Man Brewery's original taproom opened in downtown Asheville, NC in 1997. nearly 201 years later the Green Mansion opened, an impressive three-story brewery and tasting room with a "Brewtique" for souvenirs and beer to-go. Green Man brewers Geoffrey Ebner and Kyle McKenzie stopped by the Beer Guys studio on a recent trip to Atlanta, with plenty of Green Man beer in tow. We sampled through brews like their Wayfarer IPA, Hazy Cosmic Jive (part of their Hazy Homage series), Keller Pilz, and Moe's Goes Camping (a smoky s'mores stout collaboration brewed with Moe's Original BBQ) while Ebner and McKenzie share their love for lagers and dive bars. The guys also share with us some of the brewery's environmentally-friendly initiatives like using high-efficiency equipment where possible, recycling all packaging and pallets, and buying grain in bulk to reduce the number of shipments they receive. Brewery's produce a lot of waste in spent grain. Fortunately, many brewers (like Green Man) partner with local farmers to use this grain as feed for livestock. Some of the animals raised on the grain make their way into burgers at the nearby White Labs Kitchen & Tap. Ask the Brewers Homebrewers are a big reason the American craft beer scene is as awesome as it is today. Through the creativity and experimentation of homebrew, we've had amazing new styles of beer created. The Green Man brewers are huge supporters of homebrewing and have a section on their site to ask a brewer any questions you have. Ebner and McKenzie warn us that they can get long-winded with some of their answers. Through the explosive growth of the Asheville beer scene, Green Man has been a staple. Stop in for a pint of their classic ESB or see what experimental beers are on tap. If you're a soccer fan you'll be in luck, if there's a game on TV it will be on in the taproom. Hail United! Tanner, Jared, and Alan enjoy a delicious Bootsy American Sour Ale from Green Man Brewery out of Asheville, North Carolina while discussing Star Wars The Last Jedi.LISTEN WITH CAUTION, SPOILERS FOR THE LAST JEDI.
In this pod special, we discussed the recent NWSL Draft and FIFA & CONCACAF awards bestowed upon several of the players from the United States Women's National Team. With Ron still under the weather, Ferris and Blake were joined by local NWSL and women's soccer expert Caitlin Elliott. The other big news to cover was all of the USWNT stars opting to postpone their NWSL play (or leave the NWSL completely) for a chance to play in Europe. Since Caitlin was visiting our studio live for the first time, she wanted to provide the beer of the pod. She picked a good one in Green Man Brewery's delicious porter. We had a lot to say about this beer. -Love the beer, cherish the game. The Brewtiful Game Subscribe, rate & review us on: iTunes Stitcher iHeartRadio
The very first rum barrel bourbon aged beer and the very first sour beer made in Asheville were brewed by Mike Karnowski at Dirty Jacks several years ago. Now known as the King of Specialty, Mike has his own production brewery in Weaverville, where he brews historical, forgotten, and mythological beers. Find out if the haze brings anything to an IPA, as Monique Ruiz and Tommy Green zone out, while Jonathan Ayers and Mike Karnowski geek out. Dedicating upcoming beers to Prince, Muhammad Ali, and Albert Hoffman (the inventor of LSD) we were lucky to taste Prince in episode #0022.
“Our Asheville Community is about working together to create local economy, so we can live here with the quality of life we all came here for,” says Marilyn Ball in episode #0018 of Drink Local Now. Tim Schaller, owner of the Wedge Brewery, and Marilyn Ball from Speaking of Travel, make for an all-star cast on a beautiful afternoon on location at The Wedge. Community is Brewing’s new home, dirty bong water, traveling to Cuba, and the craft lifestyle are just a few of the many topics covered. F***k HB2!
