The boys drink and review Perni Haze IPA from Wicked Weed Brewing, then discuss Trump's options for a running mate. Trump is faced with a unique challenge because he can only serve one more term, so whoever he picks is likely to be the presidential nominee for 2028, and that person could potentially serve for eight years. Christi Noem – P&C think she's probably torpedoed her chances by writing in her memoir about shooting her dog. Elise Stephanik – An unknown quantity to P&C. Not willing to recommend. Vivek Ramaswammy – He was an early favorite of P&C, but his performance in the debates moved him down the list. He would make a great cabinet official. Kari Lake – Seems to have gone off the edge a bit. Tulsi Gabbard – P&C like her, but the fact that she's been a Democrat for so long makes her too much of a long shot. Marjory Taylor Green – She's good as a firebrand / bomb thrower, and that role suits her, but she has no place in the White House. Greg Abbott – Does he even want this job? Crowhill doesn't trust him based on past behavior. He seems to be a johnny-come-lately on many conservative issues. Sarah Huckabee Sander – She would work well with Trump, and P&C are impressed with her. But Crowhill is concerned she Tucker Carlson – Why is he even on this list? Why would he be considered? Recently he's started to show his wacky side. But he would make a good press secretary. Tim Scott – He's okay, but not exciting. No thrill here. JD Vance – Let's let him rock and roll in Ohio. He doesn't help the ticket much. Nikki Haley – She's out. She's burned her bridges with Trump and Ron DeSantis – DeSantis is the top choice for P&C. But can the DeSantis - Trump feud heal? Probably. Crowhill's picks. #1 – DeSantis #2 – Tim Scott After they finish with the VP picks, Pigweed has a burden he needs to take off his shoulder about the legitimacy of the 2020 election. The numbers don't seem to add up. Biden's “rallies” were pathetic. There was no excitement. He was the most uninspiring, lame presidential candidate of P&C's lives. He was worse than the little Dukey. Still, he managed to get more votes than any president ever.
This episode is one of a three-part series recorded as part of the Rare & Vintage Beer Tasting, an annual event held in Durham, North Carolina that brings brewers and beer lovers together from all over the country. Along with a beer festival, Rare & Vintage also hosts beer industry professional development conversations each January. The combo acts as a fundraising and awareness effort for the Michael James Jackson Foundation, which funds education and career advancement for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in the brewing and distilling industries. For this year's event, I moderated three discussions, and in this episode, you'll hear me in conversation with three panelists talking about measurements, bias, and how these things impact the making of beer and how we bring people together for beer. Joining me are: Nicole Steinhilber, laboratory operations manager for Charleston, South Carolina's Edmund's Oast Brewing. April Dove, founder of Tha CommUNITY, a collaborative beer initiative that partners with breweries to offer a blueprint on how to attract Black drinkers to taprooms. Jen Currier, cellarmaster at Wicked Weed Brewing and head winemaker at its spin-off winery, Vidl Cellars. The experience between all three of these industry pros gave us fodder to get nerdy about lab work, ingredients, and more, but it also allowed us to look at big picture challenges facing beer today, most notably how to better welcome new drinkers into the fold. After you listen to this episode, make sure to check out the other two, which includes a panel discussion about bias in sensory and a keynote conversation with my Good Beer Hunting colleague and friend, Jamaal Lemon.
In an unexpected twist of events, this week, we're coming from separate locations, due to some inclement weather. As such, that means that Erik wasn't able to bring a paired beer for this week's episode, so consider this our first 'BYOB' episode, where both of us are drinking what we bring! And, funnily enough, both of us decided to go with an Imperial Stout, with Erik's coming from local favorite Three Taverns Brewery, while I cracks open a Milk and Cookies Stout courtesy of Wicked Weed Brewing company over in Asheville, NC. This week's film? One of the schlockiest B-movies of the 90's, Tremors! This cult-classic stars Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, and is essentially 'Jaws in the desert'. It's an absolute blast, and features some of the best character development of any creature feature you'll come across. So kick back and enjoy our conversation about two of our favorite things: cold beer and scary movies!Follow us on Instagram, and say hi!
This is Episode 141 and our guest is Willi Carlisle. Willi is a poet, actor, singer, songwriter - a manic expressive of the highest order. His infectious brand of folk storytelling continues to find larger and larger audiences, a phenomenon that requires only a listen to one of his incredible records or the witness of two minutes of his live performance to comprehend. We caught up with Willi after his set at the inaugural AVLFest in Asheville, North Carolina. This was the last day of the outstanding festival. I have to say a huge thanks to Wicked Weed Brewing and Worthwhile Sounds who sponsored the festival and Victory Lap Media for inviting us to cover AVLFest. Support The Marinade on Patreon. This is Episode 140 and our guest is River Shook. Known professionally by their birth name Sarah, River is the lead singer and songwriter for their bands Sarah Shook and the Disarmers and Mightmare. Y'all, if you have listened to this show for any amount of time you know how much I love River and their work. This is their second appearance on The Marinade. The first was way back in 2018 ahead of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers show in Orlando, FL. A LOT has happened for them (and for me) since that talk as you will hear in this episode. We caught up with River at the inaugural AVLFest in Asheville, North Carolina ahead of their incredible set at the legendary Orange Peel. I have to say a huge thanks to Wicked Weed Brewing and Worthwhile Sounds who sponsored the festival and Victory Lap Media for inviting us to cover AVLFest. Support The Marinade on Patreon. Wicked Weed Brewing Pernicious an American IPA by style. Pernicious is our flagship India Pale Ale. With minimum malt complexity, we dry hop this beer with nearly twice the normal amount of hops typical to this style. The combination of juicy, tropical fruit-forward hops with heavy resinous American hops is the epitome of a West Coast IPA, made right here in the Southeast. This craft beer is 7.3% ABV and 70 IBUs. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
We're doing the only thing we could do for St. Paddy's Day… We're talking about a parody of a U2 song! “Cavity Search” is a parody of “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me”… but we didn't always know that. Listen in as we muse over our brews, talk about some dental stuff (because cavity search), take a detour through some Nintendo stuff, John has a musical interlude, share some tales from urgent care, Lauren discusses her hot dentists, we plug our family meat, some Frasier talk, prescription woes, some RSVLTS talk, and so much more!Lauren has Dr. Dank Pineapple Dream from Wicked Weed Brewing. John has Warheads Black Cherry Sour Ale from Artisanal Brew Works. Cheers! Why not check out our cousin's butcher shop?Beer'd Al is a member of the OddPods Media Network with decent oral hygiene. The North Carolina-based Wicked Weed brewing team of Joe Pawelek as brewmaster and Jen Currier as WInemaster and sour specialist, remotely join the Drinking Partners in this newest quarantimes release. The duo, with the company since its early years, share highly specialized information about brewing as they explain the fermentation processes they prefer and how their experimentation helped the company grown and expand. The Funkatorium, described as, “the East Coast's first sour beer dedicated taproom,” is located in Asheville and, along with their other locations, has become a beer tourist destination. Ed and Day interrupt the shop talk to ask about exploding cans, the Asheville scene, and the difference between German sour beer and Belgian sour beer. Listen in as Day attempts to pronounce them both, and fails. Ed enjoys the Dr. Dank, while Day sips the Pernicious, as Joe and Jen breakdown the recipes and brewing steps used to maximize the natural ingredients. This latest Drinking Partners release promises to be a delicious treat for listeners who enjoy the “nerdy” aspects of brewing. Find out more about Wicked Weed Brewing: www.wickedweedbrewing.com

We chat about a lot in this episode, too much to explain here. Ben and Aadil kick off the episode and Lucy joins the fray about an hour in. There's also a little appearance from a birthday girl. Whilst it's just Aadil and Ben they drink Cloudwater's IPA dedicated to Friends and Family and Beer then crack open a Juicy IPA from Vibrant Forest. Once Lucy gets stuck in the drinking really begins. Her beers are; Notting Hill APA from Moncado Brewery, Crak's 'Guerrilla' IPA and a 'Seven for a Secret' IPA from Wander Beyond. Aadil kicks off the second part with a prosecco then joins Ben for a 'Dark Age' Stout from Wicked Weed Brewing. They finish with a collaboration from North Brewing and Duration simply titled West Coast DIPA.

With the arrival or meteorological summer on June 1, what better time to taste the latest from cool Asheville, NC! Our good friend Peter Bassett from Wicked Weed joins us and his cooler is packed with some terrific beers: Imperial Coolcumber, Artistry II, Persistence, Fraise Morte, and Sandiaca! We have beer news! To start with, Food and Wine reveals the most popular beer trends of 2018 (so far). Next up is The Denver Post reporting that the price of canned beer will rise — and so could cost of public projects in Colorado as new tariffs on steel and aluminum take effect. Then The USA Today shows us Milwaukee breweries from classic to craft, and we close the week with Forbes on Lagunitas Brewing’s successful formula of craft beer and music! We have you answers to last week’s #caskquiz which asked “does the term ‘craft’ mean anything to you applied to a product other than beer? If so what?” This week we want to know “what’s your 2018 summer band tour/beer pairing?” We so love hearing from you! Luke and Walt Dickinson, owners and brewers at Wicked Weed, join us for a candid conversation about their recent acquisition by corporate beer giant AB-InBev. In their first podcast interview since then, they open up about the reasons they went with AB and what they think about the intense backlash by the craft beer community. Crack open a brew (craft or otherwise) and join us for this enlightening conversation! Music in this episode provided by Bobbie Snakes - Support the show on Patreon.
We’re a little over two months since Wicked Weed, one of the nation’s most popular and ambitious sour beer producers, was acquired by AB InBev in a sale that set the beer world on edge. Indeed, it seemed to push many people over the edge, galvanizing craft beer’s hardcore base against AB while others started reconsidering the future of craft beer, from its definitions and divisions to even the future of their own breweries and customers. Since then, AB InBev itself has seemed to get a bit on edge with the release of the Brewers Association “independence” seal. Despite the fact that the seal was reportedly in the works for more than two years, the timing of its release seemed to add fuel to the fire of an imminent crisis point between BA-defined craft brewers and those who had passed over the threshold into just being brewers of craft beer. In response, AB's High End group, which is a portfolio populated by those acquired craft brewers, many of whom have maintained their posts, are now part of a strategic and creative leadership team for AB. They created a somewhat impromptu video response to the BA encouraging them to think about the overall health of the beer category, which is indeed shrinking, as a result of increased competition from wine and spirits. Unity was their call, rather than division. And that, depending on your scale, priorities, and opinion of AB InBev, is either prescient or absurd. Needless to say, it’s been a wild couple of months for craft beer. This barely scratches the surface, really. But relevant to today’s guest, that’s more than enough context for what makes this interview both timely and interesting to me. Today, I’m talking to Luke Dickinson of Wicked Weed. Luke is the less-exposed, less-publicized brother of Walt Dickinson. This starts as a story of siblings, Luke being the quiet one who was initially inspired to start a brewing career based on his time at Dogfish Head, and Walt being the more entrepreneurial type who saw Luke’s vision for what was meant to be a nano brewery on paper, and consistently found opportunities to finance and scale the concept for Wicked Weed into the force it is now, including the sale to AB InBev, alongside the Guthys, a very successful, Asheville-based business family they’ve known since they were children. Talking to Luke, the story of Wicked Weed comes to light as a sort of humble concept that created its own vortex of growth and a series of can’t-say-no kind of opportunities. It’s a story of what happens when a single idea gets dispersed amongst four other partners, each with their own skill sets, resources, and ambitions. And if nothing else, it tells a story of how two brothers can challenge and motivate each other into unknown—and what remains still a somewhat-unknown territory. Before we begin, I wanted to give a couple shoutouts. First to Marco from Craft Commander down in Florida and Artisan & Apprentice, two blogs whose interviews with Luke some time ago served as great primary resources for some of the things we talk about today. It’s amazing how much craft brewing history has been captured by writers all over the country in the last five years, and we appreciate what you do so much.

This week's show comes on the heels of the news that Ab-InBev "partnered" with North Carolina craft brew stalwart Wicked Weed Brewing. When the largest brewer in the world buys one of the "craftiest" companies out there, it's sure to ruffle some feathers. So that's what we talked about. We broadcast at Cherry Street Brewing Cooperative, who recently celebrated their anniversary. The brewpub out of Cumming, Georgia, is growing and distributing rapidly, and that keeps Nick Tanner's team busy! If you're out and about this weekend, we'll be at the Wrecking Bar's Wild Wild Beer Festival (without Wicked Weed, apparently) as well as the Gwinnett Beer Fest. Come out and say hi to us. Cheers! and DRINK LOCAL.
Howell is an impressive artist who draw detailed and vivid artwork that leans two sci-fi and magical. We discovered Howell through the work he has done for Wicked Weed Brewing based out of Asheville, NC and especially some of our favorites in the Angel series. Howell was the first artist we spoke to over the phone when bouncing around the idea of the 16oz. Canvas. He gave us the encouragement and feedback to help bring it to life and for that we are very thankful to him.
Gabe and Jeff talked for a disturbingly long time about data logging in this episode. They go deep and wide covering how they quantify themselves, their files, their photos and their beer. Do you have a business that is largely dependent on your providing services? How would you like to transition to sell products instead. That is what my guest today has done, transitioning from services provider to custom software developer. Greg Forehand is the founder and CEO of Ekos. Since starting the company in 2002, Greg has designed and developed software for some of the largest companies in the world. More recently, he has moved the business away from custom software development and is now focused on writing software used by craft beverage manufacturers such as breweries and distilleries. Since launching Ekos Brewmaster in the summer of 2014, the Ekos team has seen a very positive response from the craft beverage industry. With more than 500 craft brewery customers, Ekos Brewmaster has quickly become the most widely used brewery management software in the world. Greg lives in the thriving craft brewery community of Charlotte, NC, with his wife Kate, and daughters Maddi and Lilly. In our interview, Greg recalls the challenges of being mainly a services provider and how they made the conscious decision to focus on being a product company. Over time, they kept looking for the right opportunity to serve a small, underserved market. Early on, they explored building software to track raw materials in various agricultural areas. In the process of doing research, he reached out to talk to a few breweries about what raw materials they use and learned they had needs that were not being fulfilled. After lining up several initial breweries to advise him as industry experts, they began to build Ekos Brewmaster in an iterative fashion. Now in a mature state, the cloud-based software handles everything from purchasing of raw materials, planning of recipes in batches all the way through production processes, plus packaging, invoicing and accounting (with QuickBooks integration). Due to many industry regulations, the system also tracks a lot of information for tax purposes and compliance. Greg talks about different ways to bring an idea for software to fruition, especially if you do not have technical skills. These include hiring a developer outright or partnering with someone and co-owning the intellectual property. He also goes into detail about “pacing yourself” when going into a niche direction, in order to prove the business model works—as well as ensure you have the cash flow to support it in the early stages. One final note—let me give a special shoutout to Wicked Weed Brewing in Asheville, NC, for the Black Angel beverages we enjoyed when we taped the show!

We discuss Lagunitas Brewing selling 50 percent of its company to Heineken and Dogfish Head Brewery’s very kind and classy cease and desist letter to Pizza Boy Brewing Company that Pizza Boy posted online and attempted to make a big deal out of, touching on craft beer fans and their online discussions of both situations. Joined by NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells and beer enthusiast George Zvirblis, they’ll try a different brew each week and examine it through all the senses, diving into personal experiences and opinions, pop culture, news, or whatever comes to mind. While Derek is an experienced beer reviewer and aficionado (and co-host of the Beer Geeks Radio Hour on WILK 103.1 FM) and George is a beer collector who travels to breweries nationwide, Rich is more of a casual craft beer drinker (and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast), so they’ll both offer their own uncensored perspectives and ask guests to share their own. Season 2, Episode 29 – This week, we’re hanging out with Walt and Luke Dickinson from Asheville, North Carolina’s Wicked Weed Brewing. So, this show is pretty rad. We’ve got Walt and Luke Dickinson from Wicked Weed Brewingon the show, at the same time, from two different locations, one of which is a car outside of a bar. Holy. Shit. Wicked Weed Brewing Canvas Series We’re drinking six different beers from two different series from Wicked Weed. The first set of brews is from their Canvas Series, which are basically smaller batch, experimental brews, and the other three are from their special release series of beers (basically, beers that made it beyond the canvas series). Wicked Weed Brewing – Medora, Black Angel, and Genesis Wicked Weed has pretty limited distribution at the moment, but that’s all about to change with the installment of their new 50BBL brewhouse (again, Holy. Shit.). Their popularity among beer geeks has been soaring as of late, and over here in SoCal, it’s hard to get ahold of their brews. Luckily, Wicked Weed was kind enough to send some of their amazing creations to us. There wasn’t a bad beer in the bunch. Seriously, they were all very good, and each beer was better than the next. Hey, Wicked Weed, distro in SoCal soon? Yeah?! Please?! Thanks again to Luke and Walt for hanging out with us! BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Season 2, Episode 16 - We’re going back to the homebrew this week with beers from John and Greg. Also, Hite. We’re going back a couple episodes into the past with this show as we pregame for the now released Saison Showdown. We kick off the show with a brettanomyces version of Greg’s saison from episode 9 of season 2 that was fermented with brett trois yeast. Wicked Weed and…Hite… Next, we’re drinking a beer muled by Mr. Carlos Granillo, Wicked Weed Brewing’s TakéTaké Saison. North Carolina’s Wicked Weed Brewing is somewhat new to the craft beer scene and they’re already making waves with their well-crafted beers and recent success at the 2014 Great American Beer Festival. Next up is a very special beer brewed by John and Carlos, Big G’s BBQ Smoked Porter. This beer clocks in at a very low 5.0% ABV, which technically disqualifies it from the porter category, so think of it as a “session smoked porter”. Five percent of the grain bill was smoked for three hours in Carlos’ smoker, and it sat on the top rack above a trip tip steak that was also in the smoker. Apple wood and cherry wood chips were used in the smoker, and half of this batch was aged for seven days in a used, five gallon whiskey barrel. The beer was brewed in 2012, and everyone agrees that it held up really well. Since this show was the precursor to the Saison Showdown, we decided to “cleanse” our palates with a tasty Korean treat of a beer known as Hite Ice Point. This sort of “Japanese-ish/American-ish hybrid light lager” is a favorite of Jason’s and suffice to say, opinions of the beer were polarized… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
