In this episode of the International Risk Podcast, host Dominic Bowen speaks with Julia Ebner, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and leader of the Violent Extremism Lab at the University of Oxford. As one of the foremost experts in extremism and radicalisation, Julia shares insights from her decade-long research, including her remarkable undercover investigations into various extremist groups. The conversation explores the alarming trend of extremist ideologies moving from the fringes into mainstream politics and culture, as detailed in Julia's 2023 book "Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking Over." She discusses how the global polycrisis - from COVID-19 to economic uncertainties and ongoing conflicts - has created fertile ground for extremist recruitment and radicalisation.Julia provides fascinating insights into the psychology of extremism, particularly the concept of "identity fusion" and the symbiotic relationship between different extremist groups. She shares her unique perspective on researching male-dominated extremist spaces as a woman and discusses the challenges of countering online radicalisation in an era of increasing social media influence.Drawing from recent events, including the Austrian regional elections and the Capitol riots, the discussion examines how extremist ideas are increasingly penetrating mainstream political discourse and the implications this has for democratic societies. The episode concludes with a thoughtful analysis of emerging extremist risks and potential strategies for addressing them at policy, technological, and societal levels.Interested in exploring the topics discussed in this episode? Dive deeper into the topics explored with Julia Ebner's books referenced in the episode:Going Dark: The Secret Social Lives of Extremists (2020) An immersive investigation into extremist groups, based on Ebner's experiences infiltrating various radical organizations online and offline. The Rage: The Vicious Circle of Islamist and Far-Right Extremism (2017) A groundbreaking analysis examining the symbiotic relationship between Islamist and far-right extremism, showing how these movements feed off each other's narratives.Going Mainstream: How extremists are taking over (2023) From radicalisation on gaming platforms to algorithmic extremism, this book reveals how fringe movements are strategically infiltrating public discourse and reshaping modern politics. The International Risk Podcast is a weekly podcast for senior executives, board members, and risk advisors. As an investigative journalist, Julia Ebner had the freedom to do something she freely admits that as an academic (the hat she currently wears as postdoctoral researcher at the Calleva Centre for Evolution and Human Sciences at the University of Oxford) she have been proscribed from doing - posing as a recruit to study violent extremist groups. That, as you might expect, gave her special insight into how these groups attract new blood, and on the basis of that work, as well as more traditional research for groups such as the Quilliam Foundation and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, she has been hosted by the United Nations, national legislators, intelligence agencies and Big Tech. In this Social Science Bites podcast, Ebner details some of the mechanics of her undercover research for host David Edmonds before discussing the prevalence and characteristics of violent extremist groups. Given the variety of ways governments tally these groups and the groups' own amorphousness in an online age, determining whether such groups are on the rise - which seems to be a perennial fear - proves devilishly difficult to determine. "I would say," Ebner concedes, "it often comes and goes in waves, but now we are seeing a very strong wave of very young people, including minors, radicalizing towards violence." That radicalization proves remarkably similar regardless of ideology, Ebner notes. Plus, it's not straightforward determining who might be open to recruitment. "Based on my research, I would say that everyone is potentially susceptible to radicalization, especially in vulnerable moments in our lives, and everyone has them." Ebner serves up that potential universality in a different context to close the podcast. It's what keeps her up at night: "I think the mainstreaming of some of the extreme concepts and ideas and language that I used to observe only in the darkest corners of the internet, but that is now being heard in parliaments, that is now being seen in large social media channels of influencers or voiced by politicians." Given her journalistic chops, it is no surprise that Ebner has written extensively on extremism in a series of well received books. The Rage: The Vicious Circle of Islamist and Far-Right Extremism, received the Bruno Kreisky Award for the Political Book of the Year 2018; Going Dark: The Secret Social Lives of Extremists was a Telegraph Book of the Year 2020 and Germany publishing's Wissenschaftsbuch des Jahres 2020 ("Science Book of the Year") Prise as well as the Dr Caspar Einem Prize from the Association of Social Democratic Academics; and Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking Over, was published in 2023.

Also höre gleich in die Folge hinein. #workandtravel20 #weltreise

Media and extremism have a complex relationship, from the evolution of fringe beliefs into mainstream discourse to the strategies extremists employ to influence public opinion. In the modern context, these issues have manifested themselves throughout the globe and across the political spectrum. Sophia Herbert, PPE finalist at New College, speaks to Dr. Julia Ebner, postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Calleva Centre of Evolution and Human Sciences at Magdalen College, and Research Affiliate at the Centre for the Study of Social Cohesion. Dr. Ebner sheds light on the mechanisms extremist groups use to exploit media narratives and the challenges in discerning between mainstream and extremist content. Moreover, the episode discusses the role of media in counter-terrorism efforts and the future challenges posed by advancing media technologies. Peace Matters - A Podcast on Contemporary Geopolitics and International Relations
Recorded on 3 October 2023 in cooperation with Ponto. In recent years, we are more and more witnessing the mainstreaming of radical ideas and nationalism in western liberal democracies. The Covid-Pandemic, climate change and the fight for equal rights – be it for LGBTIQ, Women or other marginalized groups – are only some examples which lead to high polarization, often (mis)used by different political groups. However, extreme ideas have increasingly moved from marginalization to the mainstream of modern societies. What structures and mechanisms lie behind this phenomenon? At the same time, the Western Balkans are still suffering from their difficult past of ethnic wars and nationalism which ultimately led to mass atrocities and genocide in the 1990s during the Yugoslav wars. Why are nationalism and radicalization so successful in Europe? What role do history and memory play in shaping narratives which lead to radicalization? How can genocide become possible and why are radicalization and nationalism a threat to democracy? Ultimately, what should be done to reverse these trends? Guests: Julia Ebner is a Senior Resident Research Fellow at the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue, specializing in far-right extremism, reciprocal radicalization, conspiracy myths and terrorism prevention. She is also an investigative journalist and an award-winning author of several books related to these topics. Her latest book Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking Over has just been released. Hikmet Karčić is a Research Associate at the Institute for the Research of Crimes against Humanity and International Law - University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has also authored Torture, Humiliate, Kill: Inside the Bosnian Serb Camp System (University of Michigan Press, 2022). He was the 2017 Auschwitz Institute-Keene State College Global Fellow who has written extensively on genocide denial and atrocity prevention. A sought-after commentator on international media outlets, his articles covering far-right extremism and mass atrocities have appeared in Haaretz, Newsweek, and Foreign Policy. Moderation: Stephanie Fenkart, Director of the IIP

In this week's episode my good friend Paul Ebner/Daily/Nightly stops by the studio to discuss local beers from Winona's Island City Brewery, previous and current jobs he has held, professional wrestling, and turns the table around and asks me some questions. Check out this fun episode where we had to take a bathroom break we talked so long!
Series regular Ryan Ebner of Amnation Pod joins Elaine Shircliff for an episode full of Christmas cheer!
On this week's episode, we have an extended interview with author and researcher, Julia Ebner. Julia is a Senior Resident Research Fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue and has written a series of books exploring the social dynamics of extremist networks, including The Rage: the Vicious Circle of Islamist and Far-Right Extremism, Going Dark: the Secret Social Lives of Extremists, and most recently Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking Over.Julia also recently completed her DPhil at Oxford's Centre for Studies of Social Cohesion and has been developing novel linguistic analyses to help identify the psychological indicators of violence in extremist material and manifestos. She has also endured publishing some papers with our resident cognitive anthropologist. In the podcast, we cover a range of topics from the factors impacting radicalisation, Julia's time working for Maajid Nawaz's organisation, the psychology of conspiracy theories, and her experiences as an undercover investigator. Also on this week's episode, we dive into a recent episode of the DarkHorse to explore the Alex Jones' level conspiracies that Bret and Heather have recently been promoting about the horrific events in Israel. You might imagine it would be difficult to make such a tragic event about COVID dissidents and vaccines but if so you are underestimating the InfoHorse hosts. For a palette cleanser enjoy an extended review-of-reviews and some marathon shoutouts.LinksThe Guardian: The Big Idea- is it too late to stop extremism taking over politics?Going Dark: The Secret Social Lives of Extremists | Julia Ebner | Talks at GoogleJulia's Recent Book- Going Mainstream: How Extremists Are Taking OverRegressive Left Media: Tommy Robinson and Maajid Nawaz: Sleeping with the EnemyBad Stats thread with DarkHorse clips from episode 195Andy Last's Beyond Synth PodcastDTG Shedding Light on the DarkHorse: A Mini ReviewEbner, J., Kavanagh, C., & Whitehouse, H. UK counter-extremism expert Julia Ebner thinks we are at the beginning of a digital dark age. QAnon proponents run for U.S. Congress, neo-fascists win elections in Europe, and celebrity influencers like (Kan)Ye West spread dangerous myths to millions. All these are signs to Ebner that Enlightenment values are being eroded, and the myths and magical thinking of conspiracy theorists and other extremists are becoming part of mainstream culture. Ebner, who is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London, has been studying the growth of extremist ideas in our societies for the last decade. Her new book Going Mainstream is a follow on from her 2020 bestseller Going Dark, which was about radicalisation processes in the extreme fringes of society.
In this episode of the NEGOTIATEx podcast, negotiation experts Noam and Chad discuss the book, “Star Wars and Conflict Resolution,” examining negotiation strategies through the lens of Star Wars characters. They explore how deeply ingrained conflict modes such as competition, cooperation, accommodation, avoidance, and compromise are reflected in characters like Anakin Skywalker, Finn, C3PO, and Owen Lars. Through a detailed analysis of Darth Vader's strategic choices, they demonstrate the potential to deviate from default conflict modes. They also discuss the importance of self-awareness, strategic choices, and flexibility in negotiation, offering practical exercises for those seeking to enhance their negotiation skills.
In this episode of the NEGOTIATEx podcast, Noam Ebner and Chad Austin, contributors to ‘Star Wars and Conflict Resolution,' discuss their experiences and strategies in negotiation and conflict resolution. Drawing on personal experiences, they explore how understanding diversity, self-awareness, and shared humanity can facilitate effective negotiation. They also reveal how they leverage the Star Wars universe to engage a wider audience, making conflict resolution more accessible through popular culture.
When Graham Ebner says he makes “really nice, really expensive” cowboy boots, it's somehow barely a brag. In just five short years the Austin, Texas native (“to be clear, I grew up FIRMLY in the suburbs”) has established an impressive foothold for himself in the pantheon of rising bespoke cowboy makers. After training under the legendary Lee Miller at Texas Traditions (early job: refooting boots eaten by presumably lovable dogs), Graham struck out on his own to flex his unique combination of artistry, inlay/overlay work, and technical skill. In my chat with Graham we get deep into how he works with customers through the lens of his just-finished Big Bend Boots, the “close the shop down tools” he could never be without, the language and purpose of toe bugs/flowers, and the incredible resource for learning bootmaking that is the internet—and the extra special sauce that comes from being part of a bookmaking lineage that stretches back to the all-time-great originators of the craft. To get the full Bavarian Beer experience, I find it helpful to go back a thousand years. Without a time machine, we'll have to visit a brewery nearly as old. My next guest tells us the story of the incredible beer ecosystem that exists just north of Munich in the world's oldest brewery. I think it's fair to say that any brewery with a school and a thousand-year history is one we can take leadership from. If Weihenstephan values being present, being patient, and focuses on quality and culture, then maybe we should give those a second thought as well, don't you think? We find great experiences at the intersection of craft and culture. These are the stories of us, of great food and the beer that brings it all together. For the Craft and Culture of Beer, this is episode 128 of Good Beer Matters with brand ambassador, Matthias Ebner of Weihenstephan.
