Farming life and the essential work of producing food for the world has long been celebrated in art, literature, and essays.Richard Scheuerman, an educator, author, and 1972 history graduate from Washington State University, wrote three books that take a deep dive into art and books about farming. He covers a huge span of time and geography, from the Bible to modern literature. In those three volumes—Hallowed Harvests, Harvest Hands, and Harvest Horizons—Scheuerman calls for all of us to keep farms and agrarian work top of mind. Our very existence depends on a part of our society, where our food comes from, that often gets forgotten or ignored. He talked with Washington State Magazine editor Larry Clark about the themes of the books, how we need to appreciate food production, and more about art and literature that speaks to the nature of farming, harvesting, and the agrarian life.Read more about the books in a Washington State Magazine review (Spring 2025).Buy the books at Triticum Press or Palouse Heritage Farm.Support the show______________________________________________________________________________Want more great WSU stories? With the rising cost of living across Canada, hunger has become an increasing problem.According to Food Banks Canada, in March 2023, there were almost two million visits to food banks across Canada — greater than the population of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. This was a a thirty-two percent increase and the highest year-over-year increase in usage ever reported. These numbers represent almost 650 thousand children and many seniors on fixed incomes. It's now spring 2024, and some food banks are already reporting that they are hitting food bank visit levels that they normally only see at Christmas time. The need is massive.Joining us today to discuss the problem and a powerful solution are Jim and Jacintha Collins of Harvest Hands. Harvest Hands is a charity focusing on reclaiming food that otherwise would be thrown away and rerouting it to homes in need. Thanks for joining us.Please share.____________________________Faytene.tv is a listener-supported program. Canadians' food insecurity is at a high, and many families have been grappling with rising food prices these past years. The Canadian Food Price Report for 2023 estimates that a family of 4 can expect an increase of $1,065 on their grocery bill for the same food in 2022. This is on top of the $1000 increase a family of 4 experienced in 2022.47% of Canadians say they are now purchasing cheaper alternatives, and Food Banks Canada reported nearly 1.5 million visits across our nation in 2022. 5.8 million Canadians lived in food-insecure households in 2021 as well. This is why the excellent work of our guests today is so important and inspiring. Barbe Dunn from Loaves and Fishes in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, and Jim and Jacintha Collins from Harvest Hands in Ontario join us to talk about how they are tackling food insecurity in their local communities. Because of their excellent work, thousands of families are being given food that otherwise would have been thrown in landfills. Brian Hicks, co-founder of Humphreys Street Coffee, a Nashville-based social enterprise, and Harvest Hands, a community development non-profit. Fifteen years ago, Brian and his wife were running an after school program and had the idea of teaching coffee- and soap-making to the older students. In a matter of months, Brian and the students would be writing a business plan for the CEO of Dollar General, which led them to Sandpoint, Idaho to be trained on the prized Diedrich coffee roaster—by the inventor. In this week's episode, Brian shares his unlikely path to building a social enterprise, the importance of owning your retail footprint, and how one former student has been particularly instrumental in their success. In 2018 we partnered with Humphrey Street Coffee, a social enterprise of Harvest Hands . We donate $50,000 per year of our producers' green (unroasted) coffees for Humphrey's to roast for their cafe and wholesale business. We've also provided support through roaster training and education as well as cross-promotions through social media. I hope you enjoy this conversation and I welcome and feedback or comments. Harvest Hands is a catalyst for Christ-centered, holistic community development working alongside our neighbors to further education, healthy living, spiritual formation, and economic development in South Nashville.Humphreys Street, a social enterprise of Harvest Hands CDC, was born out of a desire to raise up leaders within our neighborhood by creating jobs, providing mentorship opportunities, and teaching job skills that empower youth such as customer service, marketing, and craftsmanship. Why we do what we do? Trying to provide pathways out of poverty for children and youth in South Nashville (specifically in Napier/Sudekum government housing, with an avg. income of $6,500 per year and highest rate of crime/violence in the city). We believe in the potential of our students and create opportunities for empowerment instead of direct charity…. we create jobs, we don't really do handouts. We believe in turning gentrification into justice—can't control the development of Nashville and cities like Nashville, but you can channel the change to benefit those that are pushed out if you are creative and you have access to resources. We have been really impacted by the Covid-19, we can't be without students and this has forced us to get creative in how we support them emotionally, educationally, nutritionally….You name it, we have had to figure out how to adjust the ways that we serve our community. We also have been hit, we run a coffee shop that employs neighbors and we had to shift to carry out or close (which we totally understand and support because we believe everyone has to do their part for us all to get well and healthier as a community)….But all of this combined means that we can't employ as many folks….we aren't receiving as many donations….we have many folks that support us that are in a fear mode and we are not sure how that will ultimately impact us….Nashville is such an amazing town filled with such generous people….i believe that we will come through this stronger….but it will require us to be highly adaptive (as we are doing) and we may have to move to the model where we have lots of people that give us $20, $50, $100 gifts instead of larger gifts. Certainly, we will take and need larger gifts, but we need everyone to work together for us to remain faithful to children and families of Napier during this unprecedented time.Learn more: www.harvesthandscdc.com www.humphreysstreet.com

Jesus wants us to pray for harvest workers who have a shepherd’s compassionate heart for the lost, lonely, lured by sin…to ache for them, to look at them the way Jesus would. And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Matthew 9:35-36
