This week is all about Farming Life in Another World. Which was a recommendation. It was a nice change of pace from last weeks choice it had it's funny moments and time where it was entertaining but overall it was a show that was very middling for us. Where the faults just seemed to drag it down. Next Week's Pick: "I May Be a Guild Receptionist, But I'll Solo Any Boss to Clock Out on Time" Have you had the chance to watch Farming Life in Another World or any of our previous selections? Farming life and the essential work of producing food for the world has long been celebrated in art, literature, and essays.Richard Scheuerman, an educator, author, and 1972 history graduate from Washington State University, wrote three books that take a deep dive into art and books about farming. He covers a huge span of time and geography, from the Bible to modern literature. In those three volumes—Hallowed Harvests, Harvest Hands, and Harvest Horizons—Scheuerman calls for all of us to keep farms and agrarian work top of mind. Our very existence depends on a part of our society, where our food comes from, that often gets forgotten or ignored. He talked with Washington State Magazine editor Larry Clark about the themes of the books, how we need to appreciate food production, and more about art and literature that speaks to the nature of farming, harvesting, and the agrarian life.Read more about the books in a Washington State Magazine review (Spring 2025).Buy the books at Triticum Press or Palouse Heritage Farm.Support the show______________________________________________________________________________Want more great WSU stories? Today we are doing something a little bit different: taking time to reflect on some of the major lessons from a year of podcasting, and interviewing incredible guests. Corinne is on the mic today, solo, unpacking the major takeaways from the formative episodes on the podcast. Taking the time to look back and review is a life hack that always leads to big breakthroughs and improvements. Using that same tool to assess the podcast, and field some questions from our regular listeners, is the name of the game today. The concept of taking stock of your experience, right nowHow being present with our challenges is not always the same as being challenged in the presentLeaning into the discomfort of a growth edgeMaking decisions from a place of response instead of reactionSeeing the challenges in life as opportunities for wholenessHow the values we have are not always reflected in our actionsPractices for coming into communion with our values, and being more whole-heartedWhy deep, soul-level self-care is importantThe ways that we convince ourselves that our nourishment isn't important How outsourcing our personal responsibility to care for ourselves can seem easierWhy gadgets and hacks will not replace true self-careThe joy of connecting with your natural environmentStarting with exactly where you are, physicallyHow the place where we live can often mirror the same principles we work through on daily basis The birth > growth > death cycle on a macro and micro scale Podcast guest feedbackUpdates on the Late Bloomer Ranch farm incubatorHow Late Bloomer Ranch approaches crop planningAdvice for those new to crop planning, a loose frameworkHow and why children are important on the farm Here's to another great year! This episode was brought to you by Late Bloomer Ranch. On this week's episode of Real Work, Real Life, I'm talking with Caite, who works remotely full time for a software company, hosts a podcast called Barnyard Language, and raises beef cattle and sheep with her husband on their farm. The work that Caite does in the software field is really interesting, essentially preventing abuse of the software, and would be a great option for nonlinear, creative thinkers, even if they don't have the skills you might typically associate with someone working at a software company. We talk about the value of growth in remote work for farming families and others in rural areas, about the support and inclusion for neurodivergent folks in the tech field, balancing life as a working parent, just about everything in between. I had so much fun talking with Caite and I know you'll enjoy this episode too. This week, Gilly is with Lynn Cassells who with her partner Sandra Baer are two of the most inspiring women you're likely to hear on Cooking the Books this year. Our Wild Farming Life is their story of following a dream, moving from South East England to the Scottish Highlands to regenerate an 150 acre farm. It was more than a dream – it was a calling to reconnect with the land, to find out what role people can play in nature, and to tell their story to people who are aching to know the answer. it started with a mind map around a kitchen table. and Gilly began by asking Lynn if she looked back at it now, would she have followed the same path. The extraterrestrial comedy podcast where we probe alleged extraterrestrial signals from space. Many signals have been detected and many disproven, but have they all been explained? One word… WOW! We get pretty science-heavy to begin with here as we lay the foundations of this case. Black holes? Check. Twisted light waves? Check. Dyson spheres? Check. Gamma rays? Check. Hulk self-pleasuring? Check. Microbial life? Check. Pizza? Check. It turns out that a frequency omitted by hydrogen at 1420 megahertz is theorised to be the most likely signal used for alien communication and such a signal may have been found… Alongside that we ponder whether things can be sucked off through portals at the centre of a Black Hole? This week EVERYONE is stuck on Valhiem and how to best farm all the much needed resources. It's the new addiction it seems. In the news: Amazon is making an attempt at a Lord of the Rings MMO. It'll be under the control of the same devs that made New World for them. China and the European Commission approve the Microsoft acquisition of ActiBlizz. BlizzCon's coming back this year but will they get the response they hope for at the event after upsetting fans by ditching the PvE mode for Overwatch 2? (Yes, the mode that they said they had to remake the whole game around, that one.) The Five Nights at Freddy's movie has a teaser. As isekai shows continue to explore every corner of storytelling, we were very interested when farming entered the mix. Today we take a look at a show about the daily life of a farmer in a different dimension surrounded by large cast of anime cuties. From planting and harvesting crops to dealing with unexpected challenges like diplomatic visits from dragons, this show had us from the first episode. Lynn Cassells and Sandra Baer met while working as rangers for the National Trust and soon realised that they shared a dream to live closer to the land. They bought Lynbreck Croft at the edge of the Cairngorms National Park in the Highlands of Scotland in March 2016 - 150 acres of pure Scottishness - with no experience farming but a huge passion for nature and the outdoors. Now, they raise their own animals and sell the produce, grow their own fruit and vegetables, and are as self-sufficient as they can be, alongside producing food for their local community and hosting educational tours and running courses. Hailed as Best Crofting Newcomers in 2018, they were given the Food and Farming Award by the RSPB in Nature of Scotland Awards in 2019 and were nominated for Nature Champions of the Decade as part of teh Nature of Scotland 10th anniversary. They have appeared in the series This Farming Life on BBC2 and have written the book, 'Our Wild Farming Life', linked below. Lynn and Sandra were newcomers to farming and to regenerative concepts, but in the past 6 years, as they have faced success and (some) failures and learned from both, they have seen regenerative farming becoming a far more widely held concept. In this heart-felt episode, we begin by exploring the writing process, and how Lynn, a new writer, came to write such a fluent book. From there, we delve deeply into the practicalities of farming in a relatively inhospitable landscape, but also explore the spiritual nature of land-connection, the ways we can give the animals with which we share our lives the fullest capacity to be all that they can be, so that we can become all that we can be: so that we can feel safe, and held in connection to the land and the tribes of the more than human world that surround us. Rewild the land and yourself by farming in harmony with nature and leaning into regenerative practices that create habitat connectivity. Our guest today, Lynn Cassells, alongside her partner Sandra Baer, owners of Lynbreck Croft, had a shared dream of living closer to the land. And while the pair never meant to be farmers, they found themselves called to the task of stewarding a 150 acre croft in the Highlands of Scotland in 2016. Seized by a vision of farming in collaboration with nature, rather than against it, they began their mission of creating a place that honored not only their desire to grow their own food, but also the needs of the land and the animals, all working and thriving in a collaborative community. The whole story of how they unexpectedly became farmers and created a viable and sustainable working farm using their own combination of regenerative and rewilding practices is soon to be available in their upcoming book “Our Wild Farming Life: Adventures on a Scottish Highland Croft”. Lynn's message - looking back doesn't have to mean going back. Let the land do the leading and don't be afraid to rewild yourself along the way. #002: Climate solutions author, environmental activist, and longtime natural foods icon Paul Hawken dives into the related subjects of nutrition, global migration, and extractive capitalism and identifies the options that lie ahead. Paul Hawken is the author of several books, including Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed To Reverse Global Warming and the founder of a handful of companies and organizations, including Smith and Hawken, The Natural Capital Institute and Project Drawdown. He is the recipient of six honorary doctorates. His next book is titled Regeneration and is due out in 2021. Paul serves on the Real Organic Advisory Board. To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/paul-hawken-extractive-capitalisms-toll-on-food-farming-life-episode-twoThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000 Real Fans!https://www.realorganicproject.org/1000-real-fans/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

Over many years Maurice O'Keeffe of Irish Life and Lore has travelled the roads of Ireland meeting and compiling oral history recordings with members of the farming community for our organisation Irish Life and Lore. The changes witnessed on Irish farms during the 1950s and 1960s are recalled and discussed in these recordings. During these years the farming women worked just as hard as did the men, working in the dairy, milking the cows and churning the butter, among other tasks. Nothing was wasted by these industrious women and recycling was the norm. Meal bags were recycled as covers for feather mattresses and the bags were also cut open and two sewn together in the middle to make sheets; chickens, geese and turkeys were reared and plucked; reeds were gathered and dried for basket weaving; straw rope was fashioned for Sugan chair seats; patchwork quilts were sewn using cut-off scraps of cloth; bacon and mackerel were salted; chaff was separated wheat; meals were cooked and water boiled for clothes-washing over the open fire and water was drawn from the well. All of this industry, and much more, is recalled in this podcast which features the voices of some of the hard-working women of Ireland of former days.

The Girl in the Mirror by Rose CarlyleVery clever psychological thriller and it is very clearly, from day one, simply the book that everyone wants to read. I can't remember a new title from an unknown, first time author going as mad as this one has in the last few days. It was only published on Tuesday but sales have been amazing. Very clever story of twin sisters, Iris and Summer – Iris has always been jealous of her sister who seems to have the perfect life, husband, etc – but then an opportunity arises to take all of that and have it for herself. It's a terrific book and it'll be a great movie. This Farming Life by Tim SaundersHe's a farmer in the Manawatu and I reckon has the soul of a poet – writes beautifully about the seasons on a New Zealand farm, great descriptions about the land and the animals, with such a huge degree of respect for them. Funny that his wife is a vegetarian. This is a great book to get city folk like me thinking about the reality of life down on the farm, and will really resonate with rural people.

Subscribe to "The Beginning Farmer" YouTube Channel! When we began looking for a place to start our farm we quickly realized that we could either have roughly 40 acres of land or a house and about 20 acres of land for the money we were able to scratch together. If you've been listening to the show for awhile or reading the blog from the beginning you'll know that we went the 40 acres route which meant we were going to be building a house ... as inexpensively as possible! One way that we saved money in the construction (and during the cold months) was by forgoing ductwork and central heating. Now that I think about it though we do have central heating, it's just in the form of a centrally located wood burning stove. Heating with firewood has been a learning curve for us over the years, but the further along this journey the more we learn and the more efficient we become. Over much trial and error I have become much better at cutting, splitting, stacking, and of course burning firewood. I now have tools that I enjoy using and trust and I feel like I'm not only being more efficient, but also more safe!
