CW: Talk about eating disorders, bulimia, binge eating disorder, restricted eating, purgingI'm so glad to be back in front of the microphone with you all because I recorded so many episodes before going on an African vacation that I feel I haven't reached out in a very long time! It feels good to connect again. I had a wonderful trip and you'll hear a little more about it in this episode. My guest today is Helen Bennett. She's a certified health and addiction recovery coach who specializes in helping people break free from compulsive eating and is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com. Helen and I have just an amazing, honest, beautiful conversation about disordered eating, sharing stories from both our journeys. Helen truly understands the guilt and shame feelings as well as the challenges that come with an eating disorder and how a peaceful relationship with food can be reclaimed. This is a tough subject, and triggering, so if this is a trigger for you please practice self-care as you listen.Helen shares her personal experience with bulimia, detailing how she started the cycle of binging and purging at the young age of eight and why. It led her to what she calls “a 20-year, nightmarish battle of being caught in this horrific cycle” between restriction, overeating, binge eating, and purging. She calls it an addiction quite deliberately. She eventually found things that helped her fight her way out of the cycle and now she uses her experience to help others get free as well. Helen and I talk about the intense shame and guilt eating disorders bring with them, how hearing somebody else be open about their struggle can be such a lifeline, and we share all the struggles we each experienced in our own journeys. Helen sheds light on exactly what drives disordered eating and what fuels the addiction. We talk about what tools helped her and why they worked. There's so much information, compassion, and understanding in this episode, it moved me and made me realize how useful open communication like this is so we stop feeling isolated in our struggles. I hope you find Helen's story and knowledge as beautiful as I did.__About Helen Bennett:Coach Helen Bennett specializes in helping men and women break free of compulsive overeating. Having secretly battled bulimia for two decades, Helen has first-hand experience of the guilt, shame and frustration that comes with feeling out of control with food. She also understands the unique challenges of reclaiming a peaceful relationship with food and offers practical (and often quirky!) tools to help individuals eliminate compulsion and find lasting food freedom.Helen is a certified Health Coach and Addiction Recovery Coach and is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com__Resources mentioned in this episode:BulimiaFreedom.comSelf-Compassion with Dr. Kristin Neff“Intuitive Eating, 4th Edition: A Revolutionary Anti-Diet Approach” by Evelyn Tribole, MS RD and Elyse Resch, MS RD FADAGabby BernsteinTommy Rosen, Recovery 2.0__Learn more about Helen Bennett:Website: HelenBennett.coInstagramFacebookYouTubeTiktokLearn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and Instagram

But what about hormonal issues, perimenopause, and menopause???!!! This is a question that we are asked all the time, and rightfully so. This week we're joined by Helen Bennett, a qualified UK psychotherapist specializing in supporting people who are dealing with fertility challenges and struggling with the menopause transition. This episode is chock full of excellent information about the experience of menopause and how it can so closely mirror chronic anxiety and the symptoms of an anxiety disorder. We also chat about how these things can and often do overlap, strategies for getting a handle on how or if hormonal changes are impacting your mental health, and ways to approach this natural but often highly challenging part of life. Thanks so much to Helen for taking the time to chat with us about this important issue. We needed some expert help on this one, and Helen was kind enough to come through for us. Following on from last week's episode on drinking culture amongst workforces, we wanted to focus on one of the most problematic of them all - the Armed Forces. Sadly, we are all too aware of the number of ex-vets who struggle with alcohol and drug addictions upon leaving the Army. However, given neither Hame nor Vic know barely anything about this subject - they have had to call in the big guns! Two fascinating women with real first hand experiences of this problem. The first is Helen Bennett who watched her brother Matt struggle with alcoholism for years following a challenging time as a Royal Marine in his early 20s. And Pam Diamond, an addiction nurse specialist with the Royal Marines Charity with over 30 years of experience. This episode is not necessarily a funny one - but it is an important one. We are hugely grateful to both Helen and Pam for sharing their stories with us. Welcome back to One For The Road. This week I am joined by Helen Bennett. If you'd met Helen 10 years ago you would likely have never guessed that she was fighting a two-decade-long battle with bulimia. While she looked like a trim, confident, and successful small business owner on the outside, she was in fact silently trapped inside a daily vicious cycle of losing control of food and then doing whatever it took to get rid of the excess that she'd consumed. Nothing that she'd tried - no diet, no meal plan, no willpower, no therapy - had the power to help her stop.  Fortunately, when her business closed in 2015, she made the decision to focus on her recovery again - but this time more intelligently - which meant doing things totally differently than how she'd been doing them before. And slowly, with many bumps along the way, she began to create a truly nourishing and carefree relationship with food.  Now, Helen is the founder of BulimiaFreedom.com, and works with people all over the world to help them break free of the nightmare that is disordered eating ... and cultivate a deep sense of their own worth and lovability along the way. In this week's episode, we discuss the links between addiction, alcohol, and food.If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice for Helen.http://bulimiafreedom.comhttps://www.instagram.com/bulimiafreedom/www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle/ Learn more about your ad choices. Discover how Helen Bennett inspires our future generation of leaders by bringing together deserving teenagers and business leaders in Bennett's Business Bash. Helen is the founder of Human Reality, a training & human resources consultancy. When Helen got involved with a local school to conduct mock interviews, she realised that for some, their lack of confidence could be attributed to a lack of social skills and aspiration. Determined to change this, Helen organised the first Bennett's Business Bash for a small group of disadvantaged teenagers to sit down for dinner with senior business and organisational leaders in a first class venue. In this show Helen shares the challenges, the lessons, and insights gained. How one teenager banged on the door to be let in. When she realised she needed to do a crash course in handshaking. In the show this week Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue’s been helping business owners to find their inner super hero (no small ask at Breakfast time!) and Sherry’s been checking out where her LinkedIn clients are hiding their lights under bushels!  (01.25 – 08.44) How have you been challenged? This week we chew over an issue commonly faced by senior leaders in organisations, entrepreneurs and small business owners alike…. isolation and loneliness in leadership.  There’s no doubt that leadership can be lonely, and it’s important to have strategies in place to keep you on track, to help you connect & communicate with those around you (and yourself!), and to ensure you stay fully aligned with your purpose – the big Why that led you to this leadership opportunity.  We explore some of those strategies and share our own experience of what we’ve learned so far in our own leadership journeys.  (08.45 – 28.50) So where are you building momentum right now Momentum is critical in getting past the Tipping Point! Sue’s been grasping opportunities with both hands, not just speaking but also accepting an invitation to talk about Team Building on BBC radio.  Sherry gets really honest about an area that’s not gathering momentum….. yet, which prompts a quick discussion on the importance of chunk size in getting things going!  (28.55 – 35.05) How have you been inspired this week? Sue introduces us to her six year old neighbour who knows how to ask for what he wants – with a clarity that can be very helpful to us in business. Sherry’s been inspired and deeply moved by the work of Helen Bennett, who helps teenagers to build self confidence and self esteem through creating the opportunity for them to have dinner and discussion with local business leaders. Inspirational! (35.10 – 40.30) What else or what next? Sue notices that our discussion has prompted her to give some thought to how she adds even more ‘wow’ to her work with clients, and Sherry is looking forward to achieving the right level of balance between family and business during the holidays.
