On this seasons finale I am joined by Ash who is a 30-year-old musician whose journey from chaos to clarity is nothing short of inspiring.Introduced to drugs and alcohol at just 12 years old, he used them as an escape from a turbulent family life and undiagnosed ADHD. The underground London rave scene became his refuge, a place where he could feel free, yet where his struggles quietly deepened.By 17, Ash had formed a band that saw early success and international recognition. But behind the scenes, fame magnified his addictions to sex, drugs, and alcohol. Immersed in the darker side of the music industry, he found himself unprepared for the emotional and spiritual toll it would take.At the start of this year, the loss of a close friend to cancer became a turning point. After a two-day bender, Ash broke down in his room and instinctively turned to prayer: “Lord, please help me get sober because I can't do it on my own.”Though he had grown up in the church, Ash had drifted away from faith, until his sister invited him to a conference at her church that same week. There, he was prayed over and made a powerful commitment to change.Since that day, Ash hasn't looked back. He has been sober ever since, and his life has transformed in every way, spiritually, mentally, and creatively. His story is one of redemption, resilience, and renewed purpose. If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. On this weeks episode of One For The Road I am joined by Alexi Kruiz, a UK emotional being born to two different cultures, family split between love being expressed in chaos or avoidance. Using alcohol as a coping mechanism to feel more confident, feeling like the odd one out with sensory sensitivity. As time went on, gravitation towards chaos kept reappearing as it felt so familiar, though there were stints of sobriety throughout teens and twenties. Events such as having her mother become terminally ill, losing her first love, and being attacked abroad kept the dysregulation in motion, and without the right tools, alcohol and escape felt like the easiest way to cope. The grief became part of the addiction cycle, and it took lockdown, living alone, and a big awakening to moving into a guardianship of 40 people to bring up all the unprocessed feelings and emotions through all sorts of triggers. Once opening their own low-sensory hair business, which led to being headhunted to be a lead stylist, Alexi moved into their own home. The sudden loss of her stepmother to a long relationship with alcohol caused the family home to be lost, and Alexi's flat was filled with everything from the past. Overwhelmed, drinking came back as a coping mechanism — it all got too much. Waking up on the floor of the bathroom, two black eyes and a blackout, she knew that could have been her last day earth-side. Enough was enough. The victim of all things leading to that point had to be fully accepted with love. A late diagnosis of ADHD, self-work, and support from work, family, and friends — community really is key.Love is and can be peaceful. The search for chaos or comfort doesn't need to be the constant switch anymore. Chaos is now just an amazing tool and can be something powerfully productive. Being the love she needed will always be a reminder that we are our own remedy. On this weeks episode of One For The Road I am joined by Alex Leigh, a former 90s international fashion model who once lived a life of excess, glamour, and indulgence. But it wasn't the runways or wild nights that finally brought her down — it was the “mummy needs wine” culture that quietly stole her peace. Now over two and a half years sober, Alex has reclaimed her life and uses her social media platforms to inspire mid-forties mums who feel they've lost themselves. Drawing on her own journey of transformation, she trained as a certified sleep coach — after years of missed sleep herself — and now helps others unlock rest, resilience, and the best version of themselves.https://www.instagram.com/alex.leigh2.0/If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. On this weeks episode of One For The Road I am joined by Justin Bone, a recovering alcoholic who has been sober for more than 3,000 days. Once one of the fastest young athletes in England, setting a county sprint record that still stands, his early life was full of promise, discipline, and success. But when his athletic career ended, he filled the void with drink, drugs, and the nightlife industry, spending 25 years running bars, clubs, and restaurants while slowly losing control. At his lowest point, Justin was homeless, living in a garage with no water or electricity, drinking multiple bottles of wine a day. That's where his recovery began, attending 135 AA meetings in 100 days, starting each morning at the gym, and gradually rebuilding his self-respect. In that garage, he rebuilt not just his body but his life.Today, Justin is over seven years sober, vegan, and passionate about fitness, yoga, and plant-based living. Alongside his partner Natalie, he founded Vetomeato, a plant-based food brand, and Super Sober Life, an initiative to inspire others to choose health, self-care, and purpose over addiction. Welcome back to this weeks episode of One For The Road. I am starting the season off with the lovely Nina. Nina grew up between Hong Kong and London in what felt like a happy family life. It wasn't until she returned to Hong Kong after boarding school that she became aware of her mother's drinking, which had started to escalate. Her teenage years were turbulent, marked by her parents' divorce and the beginning of her own drinking journey. Boarding school offered comfort and structure, but being away from home also gave her greater freedom to drink. After travelling, Nina went on to university before living and working in London, where the workplace drinking culture was strong. Following a breakup at 29, she found herself living alone, and her drinking increased significantly.Life took a turn when she met her husband, who lived abroad, and together they eventually settled in London. Motherhood brought both joy and deep challenges — including the heartbreak of losing a child and the isolation of COVID — all against the backdrop of “mummy wine time” culture. When perimenopause began last year, Nina noticed how alcohol was worsening her hangovers and fuelling crippling anxiety. In January, she decided to stop drinking, and since then her life has transformed. Today, she describes herself as calmer, more joyful, open to new experiences, and truly in love with her sober life.https://www.instagram.com/wonderfullysober/If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. This week on One For The Road I am joined by Annie Knowles who is a certified sobriety, confidence, and life coach who helps busy women, especially those in healthcare and public services, rethink their relationship with alcohol, without pressure or shame. After more than 33 years working in the NHS, Annie experienced post-pandemic burnout and decided in 2021 to step away from alcohol. That decision changed everything. Her coaching brand, Sober Rainbow Rider, was inspired by the pandemic rainbows and the spirit of cheering each other on from our doorsteps. That same spirit runs through her work today, encouraging clients to find their own ‘pot of gold' on the other side of alcohol. Now alcohol-free for over three years, Annie supports others through the ups and downs of midlife, burnout recovery, and navigating stress without relying on a glass to unwind. She co-hosts the Blue Light Emergency Services and NHS Live Alcohol Experiment, and she collaborates with the NHS drug and alcohol services to deliver alcohol awareness talks to medical professionals, introducing grey area drinking. She works one-on-one and in groups to guide clients toward greater balance, calm, and clarity.Instagram: @af_rainbowriderEmail: annie@soberrainbowrider.comReclaim Balance - Life Coaching with Annie KnowlesIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. On this weeks episode of One For The Road I am joined by Kate Annetts who is a journalist, disability rights advocate and community engagement facilitator who lives in Brighton. In her early 20s Kate was partying hard every weekend and some weeknights when her physical health began to decline. She appeared drunk even when she wasn't (although she admits that wasn't often). It took seven years for her to be diagnosed with friedreich's ataxia, by which time her mental health was much worse and as a result she was self-medicating daily with alcohol. Kate is just coming up to two years sober and in that time she has completed a masters degree in journalism. On this weeks episode of One For The Road we are joined by Alison Calder. Alison shares her journey to sobriety from walking into AA at the age of 24, to finally stopping drinking at the age of 39, and everything in-between. Alison talks about how working in the wine industry, and then owning her own wine company impacted her own drinking, and how she finally managed to remove alcohol completely. She puts her sobriety down to finding acceptance, creating a life she doesn't want to escape from, bringing in strong daily non-negotiables, finding joy in the little things and living in alignment with her values. Alison has re-trained as a positive psychology coach, specialising in helping people to stop drinking, and to re-discover themselves. This involves the deep exploratory work around the reasons that people drink, how to deal with cravings and triggers, and uncovering and working through any ambivalence that people may have around alcohol. She then works to guide clients to rediscover themselves, answering the bigger questions around who they really are, what they really want, what their values are, and what brings them joy. She does this through 1-1 coaching, group coaching, group programmes and workshops. She also works with community alcohol services which has given her even more insight into alcohol, and the impact that it has on people's lives. www.instagram.com/alisoncalderalcoholcoachwww.facebook.com/alisoncaldercoaching www.alisoncalder.comIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Lee Anderson, an experienced Mindset and Wellbeing Coach, he was brought up in and around pubs where drinking was an expectation, having his first drink at 11 years old. Growing up in an environment without a dad meant he was expected to be responsible at an early age and throughout his teens and early twenties alcohol helped suppress his feelings, mask his emotions but also to make him feel more socially confident and accepted. Lee struggled with his sexuality, eventually coming out as gay in his mid twenties, got into a relationship where alcohol was a way of coping with the emotional abuse and toxic behaviour from his then partner. The breakdown of that relationship led to him losing everything he worked hard for and having to move back in with mum. He stopped drinking for a 18 months, met his now husband and outwardly life was good. Drugs and alcohol started to filter back in and life began to unravel, leading to two suicide attempts and eventually a mental breakdown. After relocated to France to start a new life his drinking became heavier and his behaviour was starting to impact his relationship and that was when he decided to go sober and repair his relationship with alcohol, he's been sober for 4 years now and life couldn't be better. He uses his personal and professional experience to coach, educate and support others mentally and emotionally to unlearn learnt behaviours to achieve better for themselves. Lee also hosts his own podcast called The Struggling Mind podcast where he chats to everyday people who have overcome adversity. He's an ambassador for The Lighthouse Charity where he travels the whole of the country delivering talks to people within the construction industry about the free support available from the charity and sharing his story to inspire others to reach out for support.https://www.instagram.com/leeandersoncoaching/https://www.leeandersoncoaching.com/https://open.spotify.com/show/13Hx2VN9L62ta3nMto5NmH?si=d809bf1d488f45f6&nd=1&dlsi=d2719481e12a4154If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Abigail Burrows, a professional flute player, admits that she's never had a healthy relationship with alcohol and started drinking at a very young age. She was an exceptionally talented child and was offered a place at a specialist music school aged 8. She had a busy international performing career throughout her childhood but in her late teens, she was drinking very heavily to cope with burn-out and guilt, unable to play the flute anymore and dropping out of the Royal College of Music. Later in life she returned to music and even managed to stop drinking for 5 ½ years. Celebrating this achievement with a glass of champagne, she believed her bad drinking habits had been due to being young and stupid, but after that drink, her life unravelled almost immediately, and it took her 10 years to get sober again. Her drinking took a particularly dark turn after her father died of alcoholism. Abbie is now over 1 year sober and she's never been happier. She owes her recovery to an amazing charity called Music Support who help people working in the music and live events industry. https://www.instagram.com/abbiefluteswww.abigailburrows.comMusic Support is a registered charity that helps anyone who works in the UK music industry experiencing substance use, addiction and/or mental health challenges. Find out more about their work at www.musicsupport.org. The charity is hosting “Understanding Addiction and Embracing Recovery: The Classical Edition,” a webinar in partnership with the Royal Society of Musicians on Blue Monday, 20th January, from 6pm – 730pm. It will feature Abbie and Music Support Trustee and cellist, Rachael Lander (a previous guest on my podcast). This special session that will also include a workshop on the neuroscience of addiction and pathways to recovery is suitable for anyone who works in the UK music industry (and their family and friends). Happy New Year and welcome back to One For The Road. We are kicking off 2025 with Donna Francis who is an award-winning British Beauty Editor living in Florida with her family. Growing up in Islington, North London, Donna's happiest memories were at her family friends' pub, where she would celebrate new year's eve and birthdays. She wasn't a heavy drinker in her teens or twenties, but continued the family tradition of making sure everyone's 'glass was full' - it was how she expressed her love. Drinking became a problem during perimenopause which hit during the pandemic. The stresses of family issues and freelance life encouraged Donna to drink more, even though she knew that couldn't tolerate it. After experiencing too many intoxicated nights that finished with vomiting and blackouts she had enough. Donna is now 6 months sober and loves sharing her sober stories and advice to her community on social media.https://www.instagram.com/thebeautyed/?hl=enhttps://www.tiktok.com/@thebeautyed?lang=enhttps://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/smiling-gives-you-wrinkles/id1725957283If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. On this weeks epsiode of One For The Road i am joined by Will Gordon and below he shares his story.Hey there, I'm Will, I grew up in the suburbs of Boston, youngest of four brothers in a pretty normal family. We were all athletic and fiercely competitive, which shaped a lot of who I am today. But beneath that seemingly perfect exterior, I was fighting a battle that started way too early. At just 14, I found myself grappling with crippling anxiety and an overwhelming desire to fit in. That's when I first turned to alcohol. It became my crutch, my liquid courage that allowed me to express the person I wanted to be without the overthinking that came with being sober. Little did I know, this "solution" would nearly cost me everything. As the years went by, my drinking got worse and worse. I lost all my close friends, my job, and my life was spiraling out of control. It all came to a head when doctors gave me the ultimate wake-up call: I had just two weeks left to live.In what I can only describe as a miracle, I received a life-saving liver and kidney transplant. Followed by what felt like endless medical complications. When I woke up, I made a solemn vow to my wife and myself – alcohol would never again control my life. But here's the thing: just because my body got fixed doesn't mean my brain and soul were magically healed. The pull to drink is all-encompassing, and staying sober is a daily practice. That's why I've dedicated my life to sharing my story and helping others avoid the same pitfalls. Now that you've seen my episode, I enthusiastically encourage you to follow my brand new YouTube channel "TheWillpowerPodcast," I'm opening up about my ongoing journey. I share the mindfulness routines, healthy habits, and goal-setting strategies that help me maintain my sobriety every single day. As a grey area drinker, who could never moderate, she found her drinking habits escalating after some deep personal losses. As the pandemic rolled on so did her drinking. On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Phil Briggs who is a 54 year old make-up artist living in London who stopped drinking alcohol in April 2024. Phil was born and raised in Liverpool during the 70s and 80s and moved to live amongst the bright lights of London when he was 21 years old. Phil, like many, discovered alcohol at a young age of 15 and it soon became part of all social life both in Liverpool and following the move to London. He remembers being frequently drunk from the age of 16 when he left school and began working for a large bank. Socialising with the Liverpool banking colleagues whilst at the same time regularly having nights out on Liverpool's gay scene, alcohol featured heavily several times per week. This continued following the move to London with new banking colleagues and a busy London gay nightlife. Social drinking continued for many years and in his 30s, Phil found drinking wine with meals indoors became an additional regular time to imbibe. In 2012, Phil was hit with a series of life-changing events including job loss, divorce, financial difficulties and bereavement. While not directly responsible for these incidents, alcohol, which had previously been reserved for socialising and enjoying with a meal, became the go to coping mechanism for difficult life events. By the time the pandemic hit in 2020, Phil was already drinking every night in increasing amounts and being alone during the pandemic it escalated to whole new levels of drinking. When a very close friend of 30 years died of Covid, Phil found dealing with the grief without being able to see anyone else, cemented very heavy, nightly drinking in place. Phil knew something had to change and after months of procrastination decided on a three month break from alcohol which turned into a realisation that the only option for him was to stop completely. It hasn't been a simple path, with extra health problems coming to the surface and dealing with living alone where most of the heavy drinking had taken place. But research on the subject and connection with others going through the same has enabled Phil to remain alcohol free. Phil now uses his make-up skills to help those with skin conditions which cause them a loss of confidence, to use specialist skin creams to cover the conditions. Now, more than six months alcohol free, he is beginning to notice subtle but vital changes in his life and for the first time in many years is very excited about the future and finding out what he is capable of.Phil's websites:www.camouflageconsultations.comwww.philbriggsmakeup.comIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. Im joined on One For The Road this week by Barbara Williams who ditched alcohol in February 2021.She grew up in the UK in the university city of Cambridge, with her parents and four sisters. Remembering that alcohol was mostly used happily at family celebrations. Barbara remembers thinking ‘I can't wait to go out, like my older sisters', who were going out at the weekends dancing enjoying themselves. The first time she was drunk was at 14 years old, throwing up in the street, blacking out and feeling embarrassed, being out of control drunk was not part of her teens after that incident. She recalls going to pubs in the 80s without ID ordering a malibu and coke and cycling to the pub every Friday with friends for the pub disco. After becoming a young mum shifting Barbara's priorities meant that alcohol wasn't prevalent during the rest of her teens. Barbara found the rave scene in the 90s, followed by noughties ‘Sex and the City' and ‘Ladette' culture where her drinking consumption increased from going out at the weekend binge drink to drinking at home during the week. Barbara sprinkles sober inspiration sharing her colourful posts and stories on IG @sober_in_colour She is soon to be launching a Facebook group exclusive to women of colour www.facebook.com/groups/soberincolourViva Coaching with Barbara, where she is helping people who have already made the decision to quit alcohol or are thinking about it https://vivacoaching.co.uk/bookings/https://www.instagram.com/sober_in_colour/ If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. This week on One For The Road i am joined by Andy Stone. After an early ADHD diagnosis in his teens Andy struggled greatly through 2 school expulsions and thus had an early introduction to drugs and alcohol. Through his 20's and early 30's unable to hold down a long-term job or to succeed in the classroom the shame of failure and the guilt of under achieving caused prolonged bouts of victim mindset and poor mental health. Being unable to cope Andy sought help from both private and NHS mental health workers and was prescribed Ritalin, Valium and SSRI's in conjunction with an ever increasing drinking tolerance and cocaine habit. Until, at the age of 34, Andy's health reached the point that serious steps needed to be taken! Once through residential rehab and into the fellowships of AA, NA and OA Andy was then able to make a drastic recovery! On his new trajectory not only has Andy been able to educate himself as to the reasons why his neurodiversity caused him to become addicted to drugs and alcohol, but to utilize that same condition to propel him into the record books. Andy has elevated his health and fitness to the level of setting a Guinness World Record in endurance triathlons, swim with 23 species of shark without a cage and he now training to swim the English Channel later this year with plans to go on and become the first person to ‘officially' swim the Atlantic! With a documentary of his story due out later this year, a budding career in pro speaking and mentoring neurodiverse teens in alternative education Andy is out help others to educate themselves so as no to fall into the same traps he did.If you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. This week i am joined on One For The Road by Allie Bailey who is an ultrarunner, coach, speaker and podcaster who has run in some of the most extreme places in the world. In 2024 she released her first book “There is No Wall”, a brutally honest, sometimes shocking account of alcoholism, depression and severe mental breakdowns that almost cost her her life. She would like it to be known that despite this doom worthy introduction, she is “super good fun.” Allie tends to swear quite a lot. Allie was the first woman to run 100 miles across frozen Lake Khövsgöl in Mongolia and to run the full length of the Panama Canal. She has crossed the inhospitable Namib Desert three times, run the length of the Outer Hebrides and completed a 1,000-mile off-road version of the classic Land's End to John o'Groats route in just thirty days. Allie has finished over 200 marathons and ultramarathons all over the world, but the most remarkable thing about all of these achievements is that she accomplished most of them while battling depression and alcoholism. Although running ultimately became the vehicle that helped buy Allie the time to recover from a number of severe mental health breakdowns, it did not save her. In fact, there were times when it made her battle all the more difficult. After a seismic mental health crisis in 2021, Allie finally admitted to herself and those around her that she was an alcoholic and started her recovery. She left behind a dream career with major record labels and adventure companies and now works as a coach with a broad range of runners and endurance athletes, helping them unlock their full potential.
