“Our American Israel is masterful and deserves a larger audience.” —Ta-Nehisi CoatesLive from Prime Produce (@PrimeProduce), Shoshana Brown (@shotimelive) moderates a discussion about Amy Kaplan's (z"l) book Our American Israel: The Story of an Entangled Alliance with panelists:Social Activist and Professor Andrew Ross (andrewtross.com)IfNotNow (@ifnotnoworg) co-founder Simone Zimmerman (@simonerzim)Journalist and Professor Moustafa Bayoumi (@mousbay, moustafabayoumi.com)"In 1945, it was not inevitable that a global superpower emerging victorious from World War II would come to identify with a small state for Jewish refugees, refugees who at that time were still being turned away from the United States. How, then, did so many in America come to feel that the bond between it and Israel was historically inevitable, morally right, and a matter of common sense. Our American Israel reveals how Israel's identity has long been entangled with America's belief in its own exceptional nature. Beginning at the end of World War II with debates about the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine and continuing through both the rise of evangelical Christian Zionism and the war on terror, Amy Kaplan challenges the associations underlying this special alliance." - Harvard University PressShow SocialsX @BeyondThePaleFM IG @BeyondThePaleFMFB @BeyondThePaleFMHosts@RafaelShimunov on Twitter@rafaelshimunov.bsky.social on BlueSky@ShoB on Twitter@Rafternoon on IG@shob18 on IGSupport the ShowBecome a BAI Buddy of Beyond The Pale at wbai.allyrafundraising.comLeave us a voicemail, we'll play it on airRecord a question or statement to play on air at ‪(917) 740-8971‬ or via the Spotify app.You can also listen to our show live, every Friday after @DemocracyNow at 9AM on WBAI 99.5 FM NY.Thank you to our radio engineer, Michael G Haskins, and our researcher Margo Flug.

When Armin Samii signed up to deliver food for Uber Eats, his intentions were to explore his city, and help pay off his new bike. He soon realised the app was poorly configured for cyclists, and uncovered glitches including a non-existent branch of McDonald's. But getting support from Uber was frustrating. When he believed they were also underestimating his mileage - and therefore underpaying him - he used his background as a computer coder to create ‘Uber Cheats', a Chrome extension that got the attention of gig workers around the world. In conversation with Olly, he sheds light on life as a gig worker and considers the future of worker's rights. The company has not acknowledged any systemic error in how distances are calculated. An Uber spokesperson told us: "More drivers and couriers are choosing to earn on Uber than ever before and we know that the vast majority are satisfied with their experience. "The Uber app reviews real-time information to provide the best price to appeal to the drivers or couriers in the area, helping to minimise waiting times for customers and maximise earnings. Our matching tools follow a process that balances a number of different factors such as time and distance to provide the best possible experience for everyone using the app." —----- Meanwhile, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart investigates the trend for gourmet sandwiches. Do they really taste better, or are they just for showing off on Instagram? Olly and Ollie head to award-winning London sandwich shop Sandwich Sandwich to taste for themselves…  After studying sandwich influencers Max Halley and Sensational Sandwiches, can Ollie go viral with his own take on a Steak Frites Entrecote sandwich? —----- Elsewhere, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox investigates the legal status of consensual non-monogamy. For example, can a thruple inherit each other's possessions when they die, as married couples can? What paperwork exists to evidence each part of a polycule?  With the help of lawyers Rachel Frost-Smith and Lucy Bluck, and phychotherapist DK Green, Alix has the answers… … and, in light of research from BackMarket about the increasing issue of sex toy e-waste, Alix discovers that ‘Vibrators' are now an official category for ‘Small Electricals' recycling in the UK!  —----- Music this month comes from Mann-favourite Self Esteem. American Jews were interested and involved in Palestinian rights all the way back to 1948. There's this idea that it came about just now or in the 1970s, but actually as long as there's been a Nakba. As long as there's been Palestinian refugees, there's been American Jews concerned with that, too. I would say that a lot of times these American Jews were very well informed and spent time in the region, and they came to these conclusions often not in the United States, but over there where they were talking to the Israeli left and meeting Palestinians and seeing a situation that they don't feel is ethical or sustainable.- GEOFFREY LEVINIn this episode of the Speaking Out of Place podcast, Professor David Palumbo-Liu talks with Geoffrey Levin, Joel Beinin, Simone Zimmerman about the long tradition of American Jewish critiques of Israel, protests around the world against Israel's attack on Gaza and how they have been suppressed by college administrators and national political leaders alike as being anti-Semitic and harmful to Jewish students. The US House of Congress has just passed a bill endorsing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of anti-Semitism as including criticism of the State of Israel. In this context, there could be no better time to discuss a new book by Professor Geoffrey Levin, Our Palestine Problem. In this fascinating and revealing study, Levin documents longstanding criticisms of the State of Israel, and of Zionism, by both Jewish American individuals and organizations, dating back to the early 20th century. In varying degrees, since the founding of the State of Israel, American Jews have argued for Palestinian rights, for their enfranchisement, for their repatriation, and some for a Palestinian state. Also joining the discussion is the eminent historian Professor Joel Beinin and prominent Jewish American activist Simone Zimmerman, who is co-founder of If Not Now and who appears in the documentary film, Israelism.Joel Beinin is the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History and Professor of Middle East History, Emeritus at Stanford University. His research and teaching have been focused on the history and political economy of modern Egypt, Palestine, and Israel, and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He has written or edited twelve books. In 2001-02 he served as president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America. For many years Joel Beinin was a member of the editorial committee of the Middle East Research and Information Project, which provides critical reporting and analysis of state power, political economy, social hierarchies, and popular struggles in the Middle East and US policy in the region. More recently, he is a non-resident fellow of Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), an American non-profit organization that advocates for democracy and human rights in the Arab world.Geoffrey Levin is assistant professor of Middle Eastern and Jewish Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. His research interests lie at the intersection of Jewish, Arab, and modern US. histories.Prior to joining Emory's faculty, Levin was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University's Center for Jewish Studies. He holds a PhD in Jewish history from New York University. Our Palestine Question, published by Yale University Press last November, is his first book. The book has been discussed media outlets including The Washington Post, The Guardian,+972 Magazine, and Jewish Currents, and it is now available as an audiobook.Simone Zimmerman is an organizer and strategist based in Brooklyn, New York, and the co-founder of the Jewish anti-apartheid organization IfNotNow. Her personal journey is currently featured in the film Israelism, about a younger generation of American Jews who have been transformed by witnessing the reality in the West Bank and connecting with Palestinians.https://history.stanford.edu/people/joel-beininwww.geoffreylevin.comwww.ifnotnowmovement.orgwww.palumbo-liu.comhttps://speakingoutofplace.comhttps://twitter.com/palumboliu?s=20www.instagram.com/speaking_out_of_place

AIPAC, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, is on its way to spending over $100 million this election cycle as it looks to punish candidates critical of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza. Earlier this year a coalition of nearly two dozen progressive groups – including Jewish Voice for Peace, IfNotNow, Justice Democrats, the Democratic Socialists of America, the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights, and the Sunrise Movement – launched Reject AIPAC, an organization aimed at combatting the pro-Israel lobbying group. President Joe Biden has been dogged for months by pro-Palestinian protesters calling him "Genocide Joe" — but some of the groups behind the demonstrations receive financial backing from philanthropists pushing hard for his reelection. The donors include some of the biggest names in Democratic circles: Soros, Rockefeller and Pritzker, according to a POLITICO analysis. Two of the organizers supporting the protests at Columbia University and on other campuses are Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow. Both are supported by the Tides Foundation, which is seeded by Democratic megadonor George Soros and was previously supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It in turn supports numerous small nonprofits that work for social change. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Speaking Out of Place
The Long Tradition of American Jewish Critiques of Israel and Their Suppression

As protests against Israel's geocidal attack on Gaza and increased dispossession and violence on the West Bank grow into encampments that have sprung up across the globe, they have been suppressed by college administrators and national political leaders alike as being anti-Semitic and harmful to Jewish students. In this episode of Speaking Out of Place we discuss the debates and controversies over the decades. We are grateful that Professor Joel Beinin, an eminent historian and participant in many of these debates, is here with us, as well as prominent Jewish American activist Simone Zimmerman, who is co-founder of If Not Now and who appears in the documentary film, “Israelism.”Joel Beinin is the Donald J. His research interests lie at the intersection of Jewish, Arab, and modern US. histories. Prior to joining Emory's faculty, Levin was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University's Center for Jewish Studies. Her personal journey is currently featured in the film Israelism, about a younger generation of American Jews who have been transformed by witnessing the reality in the West Bank and connecting with Palestinians.

“I was definitely raised to be a Jewish leader of some kind.”With college campuses all over the US gripped by intense battles around free speech, antisemitism and Palestinian rights - the voices of young Jewish Americans have led the way. One of the boldest and most prominent voices is that of Simone Zimmerman.Zimmerman was raised in a conservative Zionist household, taught to idolise and support Israel as the highest aspiration of all young Jewish Americans like her.But as she got older, she began to question whether there was another side to Israel she was being sheltered from - and when she sought answers, she was shocked at what she discovered.Prompted by conversations with Palestinians under occupation and Jewish activists, she went home and began to organise in an attempt to stop her government's military support for Israel, and as she puts it, “live out the values of justice I was raised on”.On the frontlines of protests in campuses and halls of power, she suddenly found herself a target of accusations by pro-Israeli groups, who now called her “antisemitic” and a “jew hater” and threatening her online. After October 7, she became more determined than ever to challenge the beliefs in her community about Israel, and the reluctance by many to see the horrific reality of what's happening in Gaza. This week on The Big Picture, we sit down with Simone Zimmerman to talk about her story, which has been documented in a provocative new documentary called ‘Israelism', and whether we're witnessing a turning point in how young Jewish-Americans see Israel, and how young Americans see their government's support for the occupation.Check out the trailer for Israelism here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bondvm3hvGM&ab_channel=TikkunOlamFilmsCheck out Simone Zimmerman's work with If Not Now here: https://www.ifnotnowmovement.org/We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, and any guests you'd like us to have on our show. It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Dave Weigel, author of the "Americana" newsletter at Semafor, to break down the results from Super Tuesday. Then, they're joined by Joe Mizrahi, secretary treasurer of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Local 3000, to discuss the union's efforts to lead the "Uncommitted" vote in the Washington state primary, coming up next Tuesday March 12th. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Super Tuesday, McConnell's endorsement of Donald Trump, the race for Senate Majority Leader, a government shutdown, Israel's offensive in Rafah, SpaceX's attack on the NLRB, and Menendez's newest charge, before parsing through IfNotNow's action at Adam Schiff's victory speech last night. Dave Weigel then joins, diving right into what he saw as the major stories coming out of Super Tuesday, including Haley's choice to drop out without endorsing Trump and the growing momentum around the “Uncommitted” protest vote, walking through the limited undermining of Donald Trump during the GOP Primary for the former, and assessing the productive engagement (and what impact it could have) for the latter. Next, Weigel dives into AIPAC's major primary and general election races to look forward to, exploring the prospects of their attack on progressive Democrats and what (if anything) could be seen as a “loss” by the pro-Israel lobby, before wrapping up with a quick assessment of the results coming out of North Carolina and Texas, and whether far-right primary victories means more pickups for Democrats come November. Joe Mizrahi then quickly runs through the major role UFCW Local-3000 plays across the Pacific Northwest, and the central role solidarity and activism play in organizing the 55,000-strong union. Mizrahi walks through the union's decision to first endorse a ceasefire, and now to endorse voting “uncommitted,” including the process that led to the unanimous decision on the latter, and why the union saw this protest vote as an opportunity to push Biden towards a more viable candidacy. After briefly running through the pushback to the union's most recent endorsement, Mizrahi wraps up the interview by walking through Local-3000's organizing around the issue, and what they hope to achieve. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma explore Tim Walz's response to the incredible showing of the “uncommitted” vote in yesterday's Minnesota Primary, assess the impact of Nikki Haley dropping out on the general, and parse through the exile of Brett Weinstein from the public square (he got blocked by Elon Musk). Amy Klobuchar stands up for anti-trust, Snyder in Salem and Michael in Miami respectively explore the future of the US Left and left media, and Fox's The Five salutes the senatorship of Kyrsten Sinema. And so I'm very clear-eyed about that. And I'm furious with President Biden, who seems to be willing to risk that scenario by insisting on sending unconditional aid and unconditional diplomatic support for this assault on the Palestinian people in Gaza led by Netanyahu's rightwing government.Eva BorgwardtThere's a key concept that's happening—especially among young people—which is that you can't manufacture consent with a population that has social media and direct access to what Palestinians are experiencing…And the immediacy of that horrific situation is very, very clear for a much wider swath of the American public than has had access to that type of information before. Eva BorgwardtInvestors do not create corporations, they finance them. All corporations are created by the state. And that's often missed by the public in the description of private enterprise. It's viewed like it's sui generis—someone figures out a thing to produce or a service and goes around raising capital and starts a corporation. And what Ralph Estes is saying is the essence of the corporation—the reason why it's allowed to have limited liability for its shareholders, the reason why it has so many privileges and immunities—is because it was originally supposed to fulfill public purposes.Ralph NaderDr. Ralph Estes is Emeritus professor of business and accounting at American University in Washington, D.C., organizer of the Stakeholder Alliance, co-founder and vice president of The Center for Advancement of Public Policy, and Emeritus Trustee at the Institute for Policy Studies. Looking for a dose of motivation to break through your own perceived limitations? In this episode, Erik Cabral sits down with Erin Bradley, founder of Pursuing Freedom, a platform dedicated to helping others unlock their potential for success and happiness.  Erin's unconventional journey from waiting tables to building a thriving business and retiring early is proof that you have no idea what you're truly capable of until you start chasing your limitless potential. Tune in to hear Erin share her hard-won lessons on transforming mindset, embracing failure, and living life to the absolute fullest through bold risk-taking and relentless passion for personal growth. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: From teaching English abroad to starting her mortgage career How a major financial setback led Erin to hire her first business coach Transforming your relationship with money Strategies for cultivating limitless thinking in yourself and your kids Episode Highlights: [01:57] If Not Now, When? Erin chose to experience the world after college rather than immediately pursuing a "real job". This led her to take a job waiting tables to save money for travels, where she had adventures like kayaking in Mexico and teaching English in Barcelona. This pivot launched her journey of self-discovery, risk-taking, and a philosophy of living by "why not?" and "if not now, when?" that has shaped her success ever since. [12:12] Transform Your Relationship with Money People with a tangible relationship view money emotionally - when they have more money they feel safer and happier, and when savings decrease they feel debilitated. Those with an intangible relationship don't feel as strong of emotions about money and can say things like "I could always make more" or see it as just a means to an end. Erin says understanding where you fall on the spectrum is important, because it impacts how you should set goals. Those more intangible may not feel motivated by income goals alone, while tangible types need goals tied to experiences money can provide. [32:33] From “I Can't” to “How Can I?” Erin discusses an important lesson she teaches her children about changing their language from "I can't" to "How can I?". She explains that saying "I can't" closes the valve to possibilities, while asking "How can I?" opens the valve by shifting to a problem-solving mindset. Erin emphasizes that "can't" is actually a decision that limits ourselves, whereas exploring "How can I?" gets us thinking creatively about solutions instead of roadblocks. This mindset teaching resonates with Erin's overall message of cultivating a growth mindset that believes in limitless potential. The so-called "humanitarian pause" in Israel's assault on Gaza ended just days ago, and already nearly 1,000 Palestinians have been killed. The Israeli military released a map dividing Gaza into over 2,000 small sections. They say they will notify Palestinians in each of these sections when they plan to bomb or invade it so that the Palestinians can move to a different section. People have compared this to the Hunger Games or similar dystopian stories. As a result, Palestinians in Gaza continue to be squeezed into smaller and smaller spaces with nowhere to go and not nearly enough food, medicine, and fuel entering the area to sustain human life. The international community continues to wring its hands without doing anything to stop Israel. In fact, led by the Biden administration in the United States, most of the Western nations continue to stand firmly behind Israel. Biden wants to lift the few small restrictions on arms transfers that do exist between the United States and Israel so that, presumably, the Israeli military can increase its attacks on Gaza. Because of his blanket support for Israel's military campaign in Gaza, Joe Biden's approval ratings continue to sink lower with the exact voting blocks he will need in the upcoming presidential election, an election, we are told, that will determine whether U.S. democracy will even exist anymore. However dark this moment may seem, we can take heart that the mass protests sparked by Israel's brutality are continuing unabated across the United States and the world. The past two months have seen people mobilizing for Palestine in huge numbers. Jewish Americans, in particular, have turned out in larger numbers than ever before and in far more militant ways. Jewish Voice for Peace and If Not Now have carried out dozens of nonviolent direct actions across the country, shutting down highways, bridges, train stations, and institutions like colleges and even Congressional office buildings. George Santos, R-N.Y., from Congress after the release of a damning report into the embattled Long Island Republican. "Chairman Guest feels that the evidence uncovered in the Committee’s investigation is more than sufficient to warrant punishment, and that the most appropriate punishment is expulsion," Republican Mississippi Rep. Michael Guest's personal office told Fox News Digital on Thursday. "So, separate from the Committee process and his role as Chairman, he plans to file an expulsion resolution during tomorrow’s 9:00 am pro forma session." The ethics committee released a damning report that accused Santos of having "used campaign funds for personal purposes" and "engaged in fraudulent conduct," among other allegations. Guest filing the resolution on Friday tees up an expected vote on whether to boot Santos from the House sometime after lawmakers return from the Thanksgiving break on Nov. 28. A 56-page deep dive into the allegations against Santos by the panel's Investigative subcommittee detailed campaign funds being spent at spas and luxury stores, among other questionable places. The bipartisan subcommittee unanimously agreed that Santos "knowingly caused his campaign committee to file false or incomplete reports with the Federal Election Commission; used campaign funds for personal purposes; engaged in fraudulent conduct in connection with RedStone Strategies LLC; and engaged in knowing and willful violations of the Ethics in Government Act as it relates to his Financial Disclosure (FD) Statements filed with the House." That includes $50,000 in campaign donations that were wired to Santos' personal account on Oct. 21, 2022, and allegedly used to, among other things, "pay down personal credit card bills and other debt; make a $4,127.80 purchase at Hermes; and for smaller purchases at OnlyFans; Sephora; and for meals and for parking." Santos also spent more than $2,200 at resorts in Atlantic City, New Jersey, from July 23, 2022, to July 24, 2022, according to the report, despite a staffer telling the subcommittee that "he was not aware of any events in Atlantic City and did not attend any campaign events in Atlantic City." Santos posted a lengthy response to the report on X, in which he announced he would not seek re-election in 2024 and accused the House Ethics Committee of bias. "If there was a single ounce of ETHICS in the ‘Ethics committee’, they would have not released this biased report. The Committee went to extraordinary lengths to smear myself and my legal team about me not being forthcoming (My legal bills suggest otherwise)," Santos wrote. "It is a disgusting politicized smear that shows the depths of how low our federal government has sunk. Everyone who participated in this grave miscarriage of Justice should all be ashamed of themselves." GOP lawmakers from New York previously moved to expel Santos earlier this month, but the effort failed along bipartisan lines. Most Democrats who said they voted to punt the measure explained they were waiting for the findings of the ethics committee report. https://dailycaller.com/2023/11/16/chinas-xi-receives-standing-ovation-american-business-leaders/ China’s Xi Receives Standing Ovation From American Business Leaders Chinese President Xi Jinping received a standing ovation from American business leaders during an exclusive dinner in San Francisco on Wednesday. Xi met with President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in San Francisco Wednesday and had talks on a broad range of issues, including military communications, fentanyl trafficking and Taiwan. During a private dinner in the city’s downtown Hyatt Regency hours later, Xi gave a speech about the need for China-U.S. cooperation and received praise from hundreds of high-level American business executives. “China is pursuing high-quality development, and the United States is revitalizing its economy,” Xi said during his speech. “There is plenty of room for our cooperation.” Among the leaders at the reception and dinner were Apple CEO Tim Cook, Blackrock CEO Larry Fink, Tesla and X CEO Elon Musk and a number of executives from FedEx, Qualcomm, KKR, Blackstone and Boeing, according to The Wall Street Journal. Tickets to attend the dinner started at $2,000 per person, up to $40,000 for a chance to dine with Xi at his table. “I think it’s important Americans and Chinese are meeting again face to face,” said managing director for China of McLarty Associates John L. Holden, who attended the dinner, according to The New York Times. “This is not a magic bullet, but it is something that can provide possibilities that wouldn’t exist otherwise.” “All of you here this evening remain keenly interested to do business in China, and to find ways to advance our bilateral economic relationship,” Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told the audience at the dinner, CNBC reported. “I know that, because half of you have come to see me to tell me that.” During his speech, Xi claimed that China is “ready to be partners and friends” rather than adversaries with the U.S, according to the Times. He also evoked China’s history with the U.S., recalling American and Chinese cooperation to defeat the Japanese during World War II. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom gifted Xi a Golden State Warriors Basketball jersey during the dinner, according to a Chinese Foreign Affairs spokesperson in attendance. In his meeting with Biden hours prior, Xi agreed to reestablish military-to-military communication lines with the U.S., which had been cut off in February. Xi also agreed to take steps to “dramatically curtail” the creation of fentanyl precursors created in China, which often end up in Mexico to be made into completed products and are subsequently trafficked into the U.S. Biden praised his Wednesday meeting with Xi and then called him a “dictator” minutes later. “Well, look, he is,” Biden said during a press conference Wednesday. Biden again calls Xi ‘dictator’ after Chinese prez warns against ‘turning back’ on Beijing-Play Clip The White House and China’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. https://www.foxnews.com/us/pro-palestinian-protesters-block-bridges-boston-san-francisco-rush-hour Pro-Palestinian protesters block bridges in Boston, San Francisco during rush hour Pro-Palestinian protesters blocked traffic on bridges in Boston and San Francisco during rush hour Thursday morning to call for a cease-fire in Gaza as Israel continues to target Hamas leadership more than a month after the militant group’s deadly incursion into Israel. On the Boston University bridge, the group IfNotNow, which says it represents members of Boston’s Jewish community, chanted "Cease-fire now!" and demanded that Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., support an immediate cease-fire and use her influence to stop the Israeli government’s military action in Gaza. The protest slowed traffic to a trickle on the bridge, which connects Boston and Cambridge, as the group held signs that said, "Let Gaza Live," and unfurled a banner across the roadway that read, "Jews say: Ceasefire now." "We care about Palestinian lives, we only want to hurt Hamas," one protester on the bridge told NBC Boston, while another said, "There can’t be peace for Jews unless there is peace for Palestinians." Meanwhile, Pro-Palestinian protesters also shut down the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, where President Biden was courting world leaders at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The Arab Resource and Organizing Center planned the demonstration, in which protesters were heard shouting, "Free Palestine" and "We want justice." Others chained themselves to the bridge or lay in the road covered with sheets smeared with fake blood, FOX2 KTVU reported. Authorities had closed one lane on the bridge as a preventative measure during the summit, the station reported, citing the California Highway Patrol. Israel vowed to wipe out Hamas after the militant group launched its Oct. 7 surprise attack, in which at least 1,200 people died in Israel and around 240 were taken captive by militants back to Gaza. More than 11,200 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-run Gaza. The protest came as Israeli forces dropped leaflets warning Palestinians to flee parts of southern Gaza, residents said Thursday, signaling a possible expansion of their offensive. https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2023/11/15/nolte-miserable-chicagoans-drop-mayor-brandon-johnsons-approval-rating-to-28/ Miserable Chicagoans Drop Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Approval Rating to 28% In Wednesday’s glorious edition of Democrats Getting What They Voted For, newly elected Democrat Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has an approval rating of just 28 percent. Echelon Insights polled 800 registered voters in Chicago between October 18 and 22. So how is it possible that Johnson, who won a majority just seven short months ago, is now sitting with a dismal 28 percent approval rating, which is only one point higher than Lori Lightfoot (the sitting mayor he defeated) had in February 2023, which was only one month before she lost her reelection campaign? I think the answer to this disconnect is obvious. In Chicago, dead people can vote, but dead people cannot be polled over the telephone. When asked about Chicago’s worst issues, 69 percent of those polled said crime. That’s only a two-point decrease since February. Then came high taxes (31 percent) and homelessness (20 percent). Everything else was under 15 percent. When asked how Mayor Johnson is doing on those top three issues, only 21 percent approved of the job he’s doing on crime, while 66 percent disapproved. On economic development, only 32 percent approved, while 43 percent disapproved. On housing and homelessness, only 18 percent approved, while 63 percent disapproved. On the specific issue of “management of immigrants transported to the city,” only 23 percent approved, while 64 percent disapproved. This question relates directly to His Fraudulency, Joe Biden, throwing the southern border wide open to millions of unvetted, third-world illegal aliens. On that same question, living Chicago voters were asked, “How do you feel about Mayor Brandon Johnson’s proposed plan to house migrants in ‘base camps’ made up of large, heated tents in various parts of Chicago?” Only 28 percent approved, while 63 percent disapproved. Those who said they “strongly oppose” on this question made up nearly half, 46 percent. When asked if they supported or opposed Chicago’s status as a sanctuary city, a majority of 52 percent opposed, while 42 percent supported. In February 2023, the month before Chicago voted Lightfoot out, 28 percent said the city was headed in the right direction. That number has now dropped to just 20 percent, while 65 percent say things are headed in the wrong direction. Now that cash bail has been eliminated statewide, it hurts Chicago more than any other city. Only 35 percent of Chicagoans support that policy, but the Democrat governor who instituted that suicide pact won around 80 percent of the vote in Cook County, which is where Chicago sits. This poll tells us that Chicagoans are getting exactly what they voted for and are quite upset over it, which tells you just how damaged Democrats are.

First up, Dov Waxman, director of UCLA's Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies and the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation Chair in Israel Studies, joins the show to discuss the American Jewish community's response to 9/11, defining antisemitism (and why he argues that anti-Zionism is not antisemitism; Waxman was part of the Nexus Task Force that sought to combat antisemitism while arguably having a less broad and potentially politicized definition of antisemitism than the IHRA), his book Trouble in the Tribe: The American Jewish Conflict Over Israel, the idea of exiling anti-Zionist Jewish groups like Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow and why disagrees with it, the debate over the value of the settler-colonial discourse, the different types of Zionism, his feelings on Palestinian anti-Zionist attitudes, and much, much more! In the second segment of the show Ron Kampeas, longtime reporter of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, discuss a number of the topics discussed with Prof. Waxman, but also the March for Israel rally, right-wing antisemitism and criticism of John Hagee's participation in the rally, the involvement of a "peace bloc" at the rally, the Jonathan Pollard spy case, Ron's reporting on the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooting, remaining objective in reporting on news that oftn hits close to home emotionally, Rashida Tlaib's use of the pro-Palestinian "from the rive to the sea", the murder of Chicago-based Jewish-American community leader Samantha Woll and the rush to assume it was a hate crime (since ruled out by police), differences between Jewish media outlets in both America and Israel, sentiments against Benjamin Netanyahu in the U.S. and Israel, and much, much, more!

Andrew Marantz, who has reported extensively on the far right and far left of American politics, recently wrote a piece about how the different wings of the Democratic Party have responded to Hamas's terror attack and to Israel's war on Gaza. Whereas the majority of Congress joined on to a resolution to support Israel with no preconditions, members of the left-wing Squad introduced a bill demanding a ceasefire. The White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, called its advocates “repugnant” and “disgraceful,” and, after the recording of this podcast, Representative Rashida Tlaib was censured by the House for her rhetoric about Palestine. Still, Marantz argues that it's a testament to the pressures exerted by progressives—and by groups like Jewish Voice for Peace and IfNotNow—that the Biden Administration has asked for a humanitarian pause in Gaza. He joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss the state of the Democratic coalition, and how political norms change.

And, Jacob has a special announcement! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the FTC's case against Amazon, more Eric Adams drama, Trump's fraud case, the EPA, and the US economy, before discussing the Democratic fear-of-ceasefire when doing any messaging – and the importance of that starting to shift Jacob Silverman then joins, diving right into the collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried, the former face of Crypto, beginning one year ago today with the leaking of an FTX balance sheet exposing the first strands of massive conspiracy and fraud between SBF's companies FTX and Alameda, leading up to this week's conviction of him and multiple co-conspirators. After walking through the economic exposé, Silverman parses through the uncovering of the farce of SBF's philosophy of “effective altruism,” and the expansive ties of FTX's funds, before wrapping up with why this disaster hasn't tainted the crypto industry as much as would be expected. Sam and Emma also look at the incredible cold-hearted coverage of Palestinians by the mainstream media, and touch on Ta-Nehisi Coates' comments on the hypocrisy of zionist “democracy.” And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Jewish Voice for Peace, the Philly Palestine Coalition, and If Not Now swarm Philadelphia's 30th Street Station, discuss the influence of the war on terror on Netanyahu's regime, and the potential economic influence of the Ben Gurion Canal on Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine. The GOP turns on Tommy Tuberville, the Las Vegas culinary union plans a strike, and Donald Trump launches Trump University 2.0. The MR Crew remembers Ady Barkan, plus, your IMs! After last weeks “Ask an Anti-Zionist,” the Dorx return to Ask a Zionist, Rabbi Jonathan Greenberg. What is a Zionist? Answer: “A person who believes that the Jews have a right to self-determination and self-protection in the ancient land of Israel,” which he says is the historical, original, biblical, literal Jewish homeland. Greenberg does not suffer discomfort with power and moral complexity. He reminds us every conceivable solution to “one of the most intractable conflicts on earth” has already been argued, and there is nothing new under the sun. “In every generation, they rise against us to destroy us.” Greenberg says Jews should arm up; culture matters; the rules of war are outdated; nobody actually cares about the Palestinians; media coverage is biased; history tells you what, philosophy tells you why; and Israel is not a colonial project, it's a coming home. Nina asks: How will this end? Answer: ??? Eva Borgwardt with the progressive Jewish group IfNotNow joins us to talk about their push for peace and solidarity with Palestinians. And in headlines: a federal judge ordered Georgia to draw up new legislative maps ahead of the 2024 election, the U.S. economy grew at a blistering rate last quarter, and the inaugural Florida Man games are coming to the Sunshine State next year.Show Notes:IfNotNowMovement – https://www.ifnotnowmovement.org/Jewish Voice for Peace – https://www.jewishvoiceforpeace.org/What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastCrooked Coffee is officially here. Support the show by becoming a patron:Benjamin Netanyahu is widely criticized for empowering Hamas militants by strategically dividing policies between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, coupled with his passive stance towards Hamas's military actions post-2014 and his facilitation of substantial financial inflows to Gaza. This has fueled the belief among many Israelis that Netanyahu has directly bolstered the Hamas militant faction. In 2015, Netanyahu's controversial comments linking a Muslim leader to Hitler's genocide revealed a deeply entrenched suspicion, if not vilification, of Muslims. This mindset, which borders on dehumanization, provides a disturbing context to understand his decisions in the 2023 conflict, where excessive violence led to the tragic death of over 1,000 Palestinian children. Such rhetoric, underlining distrust and hostility, can dangerously rationalize aggressive actions in political leaders' minds.Netanyahu's controversial Supreme Court reforms, which he attacks by calling the court "elitist and liberal," have led to tens of thousands of Israelis protesting for over 36 weeks. These citizens voice their dissent and concerns about an encroachment on democracy, with one poignant remark capturing the sentiment: "democracy dies in a series of small steps." This significant and enduring public outcry highlights Netanyahu's waning popularity and might suggest a motive for seeking distractions from these substantive issues.Benjamin Netanyahu is embroiled in accusations involving bribery, fraud, and breach of trust with allegations that include receiving gifts worth $195,000, such as expensive cigars, champagne, and jewelry. As of June 2023, his trial, which began in May 2020, remains unresolved. In a striking parallel, Donald Trump is also currently facing his own fraud trial. For both leaders, these severe allegations present situations where they might seek external distractions to divert public scrutiny and overshadow their respective legal predicaments.Opposition leaders in Israel have accused Benjamin Netanyahu of being complicit in the assassination of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, suggesting his and others' opposition played a role in the incendiary political climate that led up to Rabin's murder. In the lead-up to Rabin's assassination, Netanyahu, then the opposition leader, attended right-wing rallies where Rabin was branded a "traitor" for signing the Oslo Accords, a peace agreement with the Palestinians. While Netanyahu has consistently denied direct involvement in inciting Rabin's murder, he has been vocal about his opposition to the Oslo Accords, expressing his belief that it was an error to make such a peace agreement with the Palestinians.Jewish American activists, led by groups such as IfNotNow and Jewish Voice for Peace, staged significant demonstrations against the aggressive policies of Prime Minister Netanyahu's right-wing Israeli government towards Hamas. In a profound act of dissent, these demonstrators blocked multiple entrances to the White House, underscoring that not all Jewish people support or align with the actions and ideologies of Netanyahu's administration. The Government of Israel is not synonymous with all Jewish people.Netanyahu is wildly unpopular in Israel86% of polled Israeli Jews fault Israel's government for the surprise attack from Gaza.94% believe the government was responsible for the security breach that facilitated the Hamas infiltration.56% of Israelis feel Netanyahu should resign post-conflict, but only 28% of coalition supporters concur.8. An Egyptian intelligence official alleged that Israel, under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, disregarded repeated warnings about a major operation by Hamas. While Netanyahu refuted these claims as "fake news," it's noteworthy to consider that Israeli intelligence agencies, such as Mossad, have been historically renowned for their extensive surveillance and information-gathering in areas like Gaza. Given this extensive intelligence infrastructure, it prompts the question: did Netanyahu intentionally overlook the intelligence, and if so, was it for strategic, political, or other reasons, especially when considering Mossad's reputed omnipresence in the region?
