Liz and Ryan (@the.fourth.option) were both raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Neither of them realized they were gay until they accidentally fell in love as roommates at Brigham Young University, a church-sponsored school. Both returned missionaries with strong testimonies of Jesus Christ, Liz and Ryan struggled to figure out how their faith of origin intersected with their queerness. Over time, they felt guided to embrace both integral parts of themselves--and each other. They have now been married for two and a half years, have two dogs, and are preparing to become foster parents. Liz is a certified teacher who currently runs an outdoor education program, and Ryan is an EMT and will be starting occupational therapy school this fall. In their spare time, they love playing board games, doing puzzles, watching movies, and rock climbing. They also run an Instagram account where they share their experiences as a queer couple continuing to participate in church. We hope you follow along in their journey and join the growing community of LGBTQIA+ folks and allies who are trying to reclaim space at their church communities. Looking at our purpose can help us get back to what we CAN control and what OUR values are so we can live our lives intentionally and make choices around our values (not our employer's values, our parents' or siblings' values, or anyone else's values). When we look at our lives in the long-term, or get altitude as career coach Liz Ryan calls it, we can work toward detaching from current toxicity and making choices that serve US. In this episode, I talk about six ways we can look at life purpose. If you've been abused at work and would like to share your story anonymously, email info@dignitytogether.org. If we took passive approaches to our careers and lives, we'd look at job postings and see what we fit into. But if we took assertive approaches, we'd ask ourselves what we want to accomplish in life, where we want to be, what we want work to look like for us, and what first step we can take to get there. In her book Reinvention Roadmap, author Liz Ryan calls this step "getting altitude" — and it's a key step in taking back your life. The more you reach out…the more you tell your story…the more you share…the more will come back to you. -Liz Ryan In this episode, we hear the story of a mom whose son has a rare, incurable and potentially deadly disease. Meet Liz Ryan, wife, mother of two, career woman and first generation American. What started as flu-like symptoms in January 2018 turned out to be Juvenile Myositis. For nearly 4 months, Liz and her husband watched their once laughing, curious, active 4 year old boy turn into a child who couldn't walk, sit up, or even lift his head off the pillow. Liam's diagnosis requires regular plasma transfusions, steroids and a low dose chemotherapy drug. Now 5, Liam is often tired, but always joyful. Born to Vietnam refugees who fled their country through Cambodia's infamous “killing fields”, Liz shares her parent's powerful work ethic as the impetus for her own determination to save her son's life. She and her husband Luke have joined forces with a non-profit called The Cure JM Foundation whose mission is to spread awareness about the disease. Their website is www.CureJM4Liam.com. The chances of being hit by lightening are 1 in 500,000 and that is the same chance a child has of getting JM. By sharing their son Liam's story, Liz and Luke are determined to support and offer encouragement to kids with JM and their families with love, hope and care. @Boston25 @bostonwomeninmediaandentertainment #storybehindhersuccess #16LifeLessons #mydoveproductions

When I suggested the idea #apodadayinmay in the podcast's closed Facebook group and asked what people wanted to hear, questions and requests for shows about how to deal with office politics, corporate culture and workplace issues made up about 60% of the comments. So in this episode I want to address the topic as a whole, offers some resources but also use it as a place to say that this definitely a subject we are going to explore in much more detail with the help of experts and contributors who can add value to the conversation. In the meantime, here are the links referenced in the show:How to Survive a Cutthroat Corporate Culture by Liz Ryan on Forbes.comThe Moment I Realised I was Working for an Idiot by Liz Ryan on Forbes.comWhat I Learned about Office Politics that Changed my Career by Bonnie Marcus on Forbes.com5 Tips for Dealing with Office Politics when you're a Nice Person on cnbc.comOffice Politics: How to Thrive in a World of Lying, Backstabbing and Dirty Tricks by Oliver James.Be Bulletproof: How to achieve success in tough times at work by James Brooke and Simon Brooke. To join the closed Facebook group for the podcast click here >> The Emma Guns Show Forum. To follow me on social media >> Twitter | Instagram. I am Kathy Klotz-Guest, founder of Keeping it Human. This show airs Thursdays at 3:30 PM PDT. Keeping it Human is about human speak, not marketing speak, that gets results. We focus on great tips and fun guests without the marketing BS. If you're looking for jargon-monoxide poisoning, we recommend our competition. Every workplace must be 'human' Corporate structures of the early 20 century don't work today. While some workplaces are innovative; others stifle innovation and human ingenuity. Employees want meaningful work, they want to be respect, they want flexibility, and they want human workplaces. If employees aren't treated well, they can't take care of customers well. It is that simple. So what does it mean to be a human workplace and how do we get there? Join me and my guest, The awesome Liz Ryan, Nov 14th at 3:30PM PDT for a kick-ass conversation!
