So, this is it, Mike Raine's last episode as host of the Canadian Musician Podcast. Mike kicks off the show by introducing you to Manus Hopkins, one of the editors at Canadian Musician who you'll be hearing on the podcast from now on. And then, Mike shares his last interview for the Canadian Musician Podcast, and it's a prime example of the type of conversation he's loved having here. It is with Menno Versteeg, founder of Royal Mountain Records and former frontman of the band Hollerado. Menno – in his typical funny, honest, and self-deprecating way – tells the story of Royal Mountain's creation and how it almost accidently grew into Canada's best indie label, with an all-star roster that includes Alvvays, Mac Demarco, Orville Peck, PUP, and so many more outstanding artists.

Today, we’re happy to share the very last interview from the Winterruption Festival that took place in Edmonton at the end of January. Graham Wright, known for his work as the keyboard player in Tokyo Police Club, was bringing his new project Girlfriend Material through town on their first tour to celebrate the release of their album Cool Car in 2019. Girlfriend Material features members of Tokyo Police Club and Hollerado, and Sean and Graham talked about what it was like coming up alongside so many great bands in Toronto and how unquestionably weird it is to earn a living making music that people are excited to hear. They also touch on a shared love of Jeff Tweedy, and what it’s like to get hired to play gigs for “Big Vodka”.Recorded January 23rd, 2020.Track used with full permission from Girlfriend Material. Background Music:Atlantis Jazz Ensemble - UndercurrentsUsed with permission from Atlantis Jazz Ensemble and Marlow Recordshttp://www.marlowrecords.com
If you're in and around the Hamilton area tonight, make sure to head on over to Mills Hardware to check out Girlfriend Material and their special guest for the evening, PONY! Their description should say enough about them...Composed of members from Tokyo Police Club and Hollerado, Girlfriend Material is the most anticipated supergroup since the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles teamed up with the Power Rangers From Space, only featuring more Canadians with electric guitars.Hosted by Anthony 'Long Hair' Leclair & Marla 'The Mouse' McHardyGirlfriend Material

Earlier this year, Toronto-based indie label Royal Mountain Records (PUP, Mac DeMarco, Alvvays, U.S. Girls) created a first-of-its-kind fund to support its artists’ mental health. Each act on the label now has access to $1,500 each – completely confidential and non-recoupable – to use on mental health wellness and addiction treatment. The label is run by Hollerado frontman Menno Versteeg, who joins us this week to talk about the fund’s creation and, more generally, mental health in the music community. Menno is open and honest about how his own history as a touring musician inspired the fund, and why labels, managers, agents, and others who earn their living off of musicians need to do more to support artists’ well-being. And since Hollerado just released their final album and will soon embark on their last tour, we also fit in a quick chat about the band.

Flashback to a Hollerado show where Clara Legault bought an auctioned off guitar from the renowned and beloved band (who also played Riverfest!) and going to the AMT alone at night didn't seem like a healthy choice - so Clara asked another woman to go with her. This was Emily. Along the way, they chatted about music and both had similar interests in the genre and playing live. They decided to do a show together. A short while later Clara was headed into the karaoke bar she had been working at (as a bartender) and met Maya, her bartending replacement. Clara was there to pick up her last paycheque, Maya had just started work and noticed Clara's ukelele. The two struck up a conversation about it and Clara thought Maya would be a good third for the band. She was. The band Motel Raphael, named after the infamous derelict motel of the same name in downtown Montreal's seedy underbelly, was born shortly thereafter and we are all thankful for the kismet and foresight of these incredibly talented women. They have built an amazing sound together and are being lauded as "the most exciting band to come out of Montreal since Arcade Fire" by such aficionados as GQ Magazine UK. That is really saying something. And these women, Clara, Emily and Maya have much to say and sing. Please check them out, they are brilliant and talented and make me want to join a band immediately. www.motelraphael.com FB/motelraphael Twitter: @motelraphael One of my favourite quotes from the interview: Hello Kitty Nightmares.

Host Louise Burns talks to Said the Whale about their new album and gives you her picks for all the new Canadian indie songs you need to hear this month.
I met up with Dean Baxter and Jake Boyd (the band's rhythm section) one sunny summer day in Banff, Alberta. Dean and Jake had just had some "snacks" and were ready to enjoy the day. Ottawa's power pop quartet Hollerado are known just as much for their creative marketing stunts as their music. Their 2009 debut full length, Record in a Bag, came in a plastic bag full of confetti. The first print run of their 2013 release, White Paint, was hand-painted by the band and their friends at a Warhol-esque, weekend-long, painting party. Hollerado also offered to write a custom song for the first 200 fans who pre-ordered White Paint. The band then released all those custom songs on their 2015 record 111 Songs. Dean and Jake were definitely in a vacation state of mind when we hung out, but I got them to talk about craft beer, board games, badminton, going from being a club band to a stadium band, and what to do when band life gets really really hard. Hollerado are working on their next record so I also try to get them to tell me what their next marketing stunt could be. Listen to our fun chat! Listen to our fun chat! Tracks played on the show... 1) Hollerado, White Paint (2013) "Pick Me Up" 2) Hollerado, 111 Songs (2015) "Firefly" 3) Hollerado, Record in a Bag (2009) "Riverside" 4) Hollerado, White Paint (2013) "So It Goes" ALL songs are CANCON
Mike and Max discuss Arkells playing The Kee To Bala, their rowdy friend and skinny dipping. Menno Versteeg (Hollerado) and wife Annie Murphy ("Schitt's Creek," "The Plateaus") tell Mike about TV auditions, successes and failures in their respective fields, the band working with Dave Foley, how they met, and a devastating condo fire. In the feature interview, Menno and Annie talk about being married while working in the arts, success and failure in their respective fields, and a devastating condo fire. For dessert, Shane describes an expensive date with a Tinder match.

Mike was out at the CASBY Awards in mid-October thanks to our pals at 102.1 The Edge and Corus Radio, so in addition to seeing performances by acts like Hollerado, Mother Mother, and Serena Ryder, he also had the chance to catch up with Said the Whale and Walk Off The Earth, both of whom have been enjoying a ton of on-air success of late.
