What, exactly, is mastering? Is it a potion? A spell? A hoax? The truth is, it's a subtle and precise art, and a key element of quality music production. It is music's "x-factor", its "special sauce". Despite often being perceived as some kind of magic, mastering is, in fact, very real, as are the people who do it for a living. Case in point, Grammy-nominated and Juno Award-winning mastering engineer João Carvalho. João is the founder of João Carvalho Mastering, and co-owner of Revolution Recording in Toronto, Canada. Designed by Martin Pilchner, João's mastering studio has been labelled "...the most acoustically perfect mastering room in Canada". Since the early 2000s, João has built a massive client list, working with much-loved artists such as Sloan, Rose Cousins, Skydiggers, City and Colour, Tanya Tagaq, Donovan Woods, Hayden, Monique Barry, Blue Rodeo, Metric, Serena Ryder, The Tragically Hip, Damhnait Doyle, and Rush...the list goes on and on... In this episode, João explains his craft, the building of his world class studio, working with the likes of Rose Cousins and Sloan, the utility of a great Weezer track, and why "Claire" by Rheostatics is one of the greatest songs of all time. Joining the conversation is Music Buddy co-producer Tim Vesely (Rheostatics, The Violet Archers), who has known João since the 90s, and worked with him on many projects over the years. Music in this episode:"Music is The Message" - Rheostatics (Here Come the Wolves, 2019)"Claire" - Rheostatics (Introducing Happiness, 1995)"Chains" - Rose Cousins (Natural Conclusion, 2017)"Beverly Hills" - Weezer (Make Believe, 2005)"The Lines You Amend" - Sloan (One Chord to Another, Deluxe Reissue, 2016)Support the showPlease help us keep the pod rocking and rolling with a donation. Jenna Loren, a Northern BC based independent artist, has been rocking out on her guitar since age 13 when she strummed a poem to an Alanis song on her old Yamaha. Her music style was inspired by her Mother Michelle Prins and many influential female singers from Tracy Chapman to Jewel. Having grown up in Ontario, Jenna attended Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School's unique Integrated Arts Program with fellow Canadian musicians (such as Serena Ryder, Kelly McMichael, Brock Stonefish, Daniel Fortin, Benj Rowland, Caylie Staples, Jonah Cristall-Clarke, and Director Jared Raab). Since becoming active on TikTok in late February 2022, Jenna's attracted over 6000 followers, and goes live often, especially during 'Saturday Sessions' where she co-hosts a live music train alongside New Zealand's Crystal Starr. Last summer Jenna was humbled to perform in the women's festival Wild Women Grow and the Moose FM Block Party. In 2022 her single "You Can't Give Up" was featured in CBC Music's Toyota Searchlight contest, where Jenna was interviewed by several radio stations. Jenna has enjoyed recent performances such as Canada Day at Burleigh Falls Inn in Ontario, Bright Nights for the North Peace Cultural Centre and Moose FM, as well as Energetic County Fair's Rising Star competition at the Pub in Charlie Lake. She is also looking forward to being Stage Crew for the Bear Creek Folk Fest again this summer, featuring Sarah McLachlan and Blue Rodeo. When Jenna was 18, she moved to the west coast, where she busked Victoria's inner harbour and street markets, and held a weekly spot at Bastion Square. Jenna's performance venues ranged from Ocean Island Inn to the world renowned Butchart Gardens, and was an open mic regular at Darcy's Pub and Felicita's at UVic. Busking one day, a $20 bill was casually dropped into her case. It was from singer songwriter Kevin Woodward. He made Jenna a deal – that he'd help her record her first album if she vowed to pay-it-forward one day. That's the story of how Jenna's 2005 Overabundantly album came to fruition, and she fully intends on keeping her promise. Jenna's discography continued with her 2011 EP “It's Perfect Timing,” recorded at Infinity Studios with producer Jason Cook, featuring lead guitarist Christian Down. It exerts a raw soulful quality, and many of its songs are environmentally inspired. Jenna's single You Can't Give Up was released to radio across Canada and chosen for the Rock'in the Peace Compilation and showcase at the North Peace Cultural Centre in 2012. With awesome reviews, she was asked to open for Juno award-winning Russell DeCarle at the Lido Theatre. Jenna has performed on TV shows The New Canoe song writing episode with Kinnie Starr and Art Napoleon in 2007 and MYTV with Niska Napoleon in 2009. She's played live on Victoria's CFUV Radio and Peterborough's Trent Radio, and has been aired on many stations from Moose FM to CBC Radio One All Points West. In May 2010, Jenna's "Andrew" song was included on Feed the Soul vol.2 Compilation, a food bank fundraiser organized by musicians. In fall of 2017, Jenna opened two sold out shows for the Twin Peaks (Lindsay Pratt & Naomi Shore) Aussie Tour Kickoff Show at Whole Wheat 'n Honey in Fort St John. In early 2018, she performed original songs and acted in the Vagina Monologues, a Women's Resource Society fundraiser. In April 2019, Jenna was a main headliner for the Women Song concert at the Lido Theatre. #jennaloren #independentartist #musician #songwriter #chrispomay #livewithcdp #barrycullenchevrolet #wellingtonbrewery https://www.jennaloren.ca/home https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomay https://www.cameo.com/chrispomay Want to create live streams like this? Sean Barrette is an author who has since written a book "Heartstrings - First Guitars" Heartstrings – First Guitars, is a collection of memories from a variety of musicians, famous, semi-famous, up and coming, anonymous, or otherwise, about the guitar they learned on, the first guitar they bought with their own money, the first “good” guitar they owned, or the beloved first-line guitar that accompanied them on first songs, first shows, first tours, or first recordings. These short, narrative pieces, tied together with first-time author Sean Barrette's memories of a life and career spent immersed in music, tell a story that demonstrates that, no matter the guitar player, they all have this first guitar story and love to tell it. It's the thread that ties all guitar players together, but these stories also provide insight into the very beginnings of many of the musical artists we love. It may even provide insight into the guitar player who lives with you. Or encourage someone to pick up a guitar and get playing themselves. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Serena Ryder was born on December 8, 1983 in Millbrook, Ontario, Canada. A strikingly pretty brunette with a remarkably deep, soulful and powerful three-octave voice, Serena stems from strong musical roots: Her Canadian mother was a go-go dancer and touring back-up singer while her Trinidadian father was a guitarist and percussionist with the Carribean folk group the Tradewinds. Ryder began singing publicly when she was just a little girl and got her first guitar from her dad at age thirteen. She attended the Integrated Arts Program at Peterborough Collegiate and Vocational Institute and took music lessons from Terry Finn at Finn's House of Music. Serena started out performing solo as a teenager plus performed with the Christian rock band Thousand Foot Krutch and the hard rock alternative group Three Days Grace. Ryder released her first album "Falling Out" on the indie label Mime Radio in 1999. In 2002 she recorded a demo album which led to her playing on the air on CBC Radio. Fellow Canadian musician Hawksley Workman heard the broadcast and was sufficiently impressed enough to ask Serena to record an album on his Isadora record label. The album "Unlikely Emergency" was released in 2005 and received favorable reviews from music critics. Moreover, the poignant song "Just Another Day" got considerable airplay on various Canadian radio stations. Ryder's follow-up album "If Your Memory Serves You Well," a terrific collection of mostly inspired covers of notable songs by Canadian music artists that includes Leonard Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy," Galt MacDermot's "Good Morning Starshine," and Percy Faith's "My Heart Cries for You" as well as three excellent original compositions, was released in November, 2006 and once again garnered highly positive reviews from critics. Serena won the 2008 Juno Award for New Artist of the Year and released the EP CD "Told You in a Whispered Song" on June 19, 2007. This was followed by both the EP CD "Sweeping the Ashes" and the album "Is It O.K." in 2008.
