Before commencing her career as a filmmaker, Jane Larkin was an Australian representative sprinter, pushing her body to the limits on the track. In the moments of preparation, cooldowns, and every minute in between, Jane was building friendships, learning from fellow athletes, and seeing a world of sports that we rarely get to see in cinema. After shifting over to acting in 2018, Jane embraced roles in films like Ron Howard's Thirteen Lives and the Netflix series Boy Swallows Universe, before commencing on her biggest creative project yet: The Edge. Jane wears multiple hats on her feature film debut, embracing the role of director, writer, producer, and co-lead actor, as she plays the role of Annie Murphy.Like Jane, Annie is a sprinter, and it's her performance, alongside fellow athletes-turned-actors, Lily Riley a powerlifter who plays Sylvia, and paralympic swimmer Mei Ichinose who plays Yui, that gives The Edge a docu-drama feeling. This is ultimately a film about the world of sport, and to get that holistic perspective, Jane consciously brings us into the lives of Annie, Sylvia, and Yui, with each given their chance to explore their lived perspectives of women in the world of athletics.Jane's script comfortably gives space for each actor to explore the realities of sports: the visceral nature of vomiting during training, the prevalence of sexual abuse, the continued harassment and criticism which leads to complex relationships with body images. But, while these are heavy subjects to present on screen, Jane consciously gives them space to breath by imbuing each character with another aspect that is rarely seen on screen from a woman's perspective: friendship in competitive spaces. As Annie, Sylvia, and Yui don't directly compete with one another on a sports level, a lesser film might find space to have them compete with each other outside of the sporting arena. It's then comforting to see The Edge delve into supportive relationships, with each character given the other the space to be nurtured, heard, and guided through whatever challenges they're facing. The Edge's levity and warmth comes from these core relationships, allowing the film to resonate long after its finished. These aspects are also elevated by scenes that carry immense visual weight, whether it be a closing shot of the women on a beach, or the overwhelming in tone underwater shots of Yui. In the following interview, Jane refers to one of cinemas great sporting films - Chariots of Fire - as an inspiration for her creative work as a filmmaker, and it's in these moments of invigoration, captured brilliantly by cinematographer Ben Knibb, that The Edge makes its mark as an impressive entry in the Australian sports genre. This is an expansive interview which ranges from Jane discussing her decision to shift from athletics to acting, how she managed that docu-drama vibe, and finally, talking about the films upcoming world premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival on Friday 2 May 2025. The Edge will also have an encore screening on Tuesday 6 May 2025. For all ticketing details, visit GCFF.com.au. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Astrology forecast for September 14-20 Chris and Almie discuss the upcoming lunar eclipse that will be exact at 7:34pm on Tuesday, September 17th. Eclipses tend to speed things up, so we could see new people or situations either entering our lives, or quickly disappearing from them. Because the eclipse is happening in the sign of Pisces, this could be an especially emotional eclipse, and also an opportunity for healing and forgiveness. They also discuss the Venus-Jupiter trine taking place this weekend, the Sun-Uranus trine on Thursday, September 19th, and they give listeners the heads up that Libra Season is just around the corner, beginning on September 22nd! In "Ask a Scorpio," Chris asks Almie for her thoughts about the TV show “Kevin Can F**k Himself,” starring Annie Murphy of “Schitt's Creek.” --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/almie/support

Anthology television shows have been quite popular over the years. With the TWILIGHT ZONE, ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, and THE OUTER LIMITS, the genre has been around for years. HBO's MASTERS OF HORROR was one that pushed the limits. An unlikely successor to these shows was BLACK MIRROR. It eventually was picked up by Netflix after British television ended its run. Now on Season 6, the show has picked up right where it left off.Season 6 includes the episodes JOAN IS AWFUL, LOCH HENRY, BEYOND THE SEA, MAZEY DAY, and DEMON 79. Each is completely different than the prior and have a mix of comedy, horror, darkness, and sadness. One even if a throwback to grindhouse cinema from the 1970's.Actors include Salma Hayek, Annie Murphy, John Hannah, Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett, and Kate Mara. Show creator and co-showrunner Charlie Brooker is the primary writer of the episodes. You co-hosts take a look at this five episode season of television and give their thoughts.

I wasn't especially familiar with Liza Koshy's work on Vine, YouTube, and other social media platforms the first time I covered one of her feature films, but that certainly changed after our brief chat for her summer 2020 release, Work It. A big ball of infectious energy and positivity, it was immediately clear that Koshy's star was going to continue to soar, and also that she'd be an ideal guest on Collider Ladies Night. Three years later, the time has finally come, and not only did she not disappoint, she far exceeded Ladies Night expectations.Koshy voices Margot in DreamWorks Animation's Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, the human best friend of the title character voiced by Lana Condor. When Ruby discovers she can transform into a gigantic kraken, she does what far too many high school students do with a quality that makes them different; she goes to great lengths to keep it a secret, even from her very understanding and supportive BFFs. However, when the new girl at school, Chelsea (voiced by Annie Murphy), turns out to be an evil mermaid with the power to destroy her hometown, Ruby knows exactly what she needs to do to keep her friends and family safe — fully unleash the kraken. With Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken now playing in theaters nationwide, Koshy joined me for a Ladies Night chat to recap her journey from becoming a Vine powerhouse to a full-blown movie star, amassing a considerable filmography a mere 10 years into her time in Los Angeles. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Black Mirror: Season 6: Joan is Awful Ending Explained Breakdown & Spoilers #blackmirror #joanisawful CHECK OUT MERCH! https://cultureelixir.myshopify.com/ An average woman is stunned to discover a global streaming platform has launched a prestige TV drama adaptation of her life - in which she is portrayed by Hollywood A-lister Salma Hayek. Joan, a tech CEO, finds that the events of her life are being retold in near-real time by streaming app Streamberry, which has produced a show titled Joan Is Awful starring Salma Hayek. Joan learns from her lawyer that she technically consented to Streamberry's usage of her personal data upon signing the app's terms and conditions, and that the company is using a quantum computer to produce the entire show in CGI based on data collected from their personal devices. Blaming Hayek, Joan rebelliously decides to defecate in a church; Hayek visits her after the act is captured in the show and reveals that she too inadvertently signed the rights over her own image to Streamberry. The two decide to break into Streamberry's offices to destroy the computer, only to learn that they themselves are in a simulated reality, with "Joan" being played by actress Annie Murphy. Joan nevertheless destroys the computer, reverting reality to its source level, where the real Joan is a young coffee shop owner who, alongside Murphy, is placed on house arrest for breaking into Streamberry's offices.
It's easy to think of the people in your ad as characters that exist in those 15 seconds alone. But you can create a stronger bond with your brand by focusing on what those characters are like outside those fifteen seconds. But creating multi-dimensional characters is easier said than done. This week, we're taking a page out of “Schitt's Creek.” We're exploring the roles of relationships, flaws, and real-life experiences in relatable character building for your B2B marketing.About “Schitt's Creek”“Schitt's Creek” is a Canadian TV sitcom created, written and executive produced by Dan Levy and his father Eugene Levy. The show aired from 2015 - 2020 and starred Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Annie Murphy and Dan Levy. The story follows the wealthy and privileged Rose family, who suddenly find themselves broke after their business manager was convicted of fraud. The IRS stripped the Rose family of all of their assets, except one: the small town of Schitt's Creek, which they had only purchased as a joke years earlier. What B2B Companies Can Learn From “Schitt's Creek”: Find inspiration from real-life experiences. “Relatability” is a subjective term – some people might relate to certain things, while others might shudder at them. But there's no better shortcut to capturing your audience's attention than drawing from actual experiences. Schitt's Creek was inspired by the lives of the ultra rich, particularly families like the Kardashians. They even drew inspiration from actress Kim Basinger, who once bought a small town in Georgia – only to go bankrupt. But the emotional core of “Schitt's Creek” was something very personal to Dan Levy: his own personal experience of coming out. When describing writing the show, Dan puts it better than we ever could: “I just wanted to write something that I had experienced, and that people could relate to.”Reveal your characters' flaws. Don't make them too perfect. Exposing the full spectrum of human traits makes it that much easier for your audience to say, “Oh, I've done that before,” or “I've felt that way before.” Like how self-absorbed the Roses are, the sibling bickering between David and Alexis, and Moira's detachment from those around her. But it's also balanced by authentic emotional journeys for each one of them through the six seasons. So by the end of the show, they're all much closer, much more likable human beings. A complex, real person includes the good, the bad, and the ugly. Develop relationships between characters. Give them depth by exploring the dynamics with other cast members. Close characters may have nicknames for each other while others may have unsettled drama. By giving them a past and a future, you're extending their believability past the ad itself. From David and Stevie being frenemies to Alexis and Mutt's romance, the ever-shifting interpersonal ties explore universal themes like love and friendship that anyone can relate to. Look at how Zendesk highlighted their customer relationships through this ad styled like the couples interviews in When Harry Met Sally. Or at how Adobe showed the relationships among people in their supply chain. By doing so, the characters and world they exist in feel a lot more realistic and multi-dimensional.Key Quotes*”[The Roses] exaggerate and accentuate some of the traits that we can find in ourselves. Like some of the things they say are the things we do. We're like, ‘Ooh, I've done this before.' In a way they're very human. And I think you see all their flaws and how they interact with each other, like the brother-sister relationship, the mom-son relationship. I think we can relate a lot to those moments and it makes it funny.” - Gwen Lafage*”When David Rose becomes friends with Stevie and they have this frenemy relationship, you're just like, ‘We have all been there,' where you're a stranger in a new place and you need to make a friend, and there's one other person who, it turns out, is kind of like you, and maybe you don't like him at first, and then you grow to be friends together. And I feel like it's just such a part of the human condition to be an outsider. And they've never been outsiders in their entire life. And so when you are an outsider and you just get that first friend, it matters so much. Eric Petersen recently joined host Elias in the cave! You can see Eric as Kevin on the second and final Season of "Kevin Can F**k Himself" which premiered August 22 on AMC. At the end of season one, Neil found out about Allison's plan to kill Kevin. If you haven't seen the show, it is a hilarious dark comedy about the secret life of a type of woman we all grew up believing we knew: the sitcom wife. Alternating between single-camera realism and multi-camera comedy, we see what happens when the sitcom wife escapes her confines and takes the lead in her own life. Kevin Can F**k Himself - is an American dark comedy television series created by Valerie Armstrong, who also serves as an executive producer. Set in Worcester, Massachusetts, the show explores the life of Allison McRoberts (played by Annie Murphy), a woman struggling to redefine her life amid an unhappy marriage to her husband Kevin, an insensitive, unambitious man-child. The show presents contrasting perspectives of her experience: as a stereotypical sitcom wife when Allison is with her husband Kevin, shown with a multiple-camera setup and canned laughter, and as a woman navigating a difficult personal path, filmed in the single-camera setup more common to television dramas.
