Joni Mitchell's rich, colorful altered-tuning chord voicings have set her work apart in its own musical universe, where the rest of us guitarists either scratch our heads in wonder or have to do dissertation-level research to unpack just how she gets her sound. Dawes guitarist and songwriter Taylor Goldsmith gained firsthand experience with Mitchell's songs when he joined her on stage—just check out 2022's “Joni Jam” from the Newport Folk Festival, which also included Brandi Carlile, Blake Mills, Jon Batiste, and others.Goldsmith joins us on this episode of the 100 Guitarists podcast. Together, we talk about Mitchell's chord voicings and progressions, her tunings, what it's like to share a stage with her, and Goldsmith wonders: Was Bob Dylan's “Tangled Up in Blue” a nod to the songwriter's 1971 album? When we wrap up our conversation, we cover a new release of energetic, forward-leaning guitar cumbia by Los Pirañas and an album of Bach Partitas for Telecaster by guitarist Noel Johnston.Check out the L.R. I hope you've been enjoying the last few weeks of the Talkhouse feed as we've been throwing some new shows your way. If you haven't checked out Summer Album/Winter Album yet, please do, and look out for new episodes of Nobody's Ever Asked Me That, featuring my esteemed colleague Nick Dawson, in the coming months, too. Today's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast features a pair of incredible songwriters in a lovely chat about the thing they love to do the most: make music. We've got Benmont Tench and Taylor Goldsmith. Tench, in case you don't recognize the name, is a founding member of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and a guy who helped shape rock music for decades with the distinctive sound and feel of his piano, organ, and much more. Tench made music with Petty from the time they were 11 years old until Petty's death in 2017, but he's also contributed to songs and albums by a dizzying array of other artists, too, from Roy Orbison to Fiona Apple to U2. As you'll hear in this conversation, Tench is always playing music because he loves it so damn much. He recently released his second-ever solo album, The Melancholy Season, and it includes some playing from his friend Taylor Goldsmith. Check out the title track from The Melancholy Season right here. Goldsmith is best known as the singer of the band Dawes, whose Laurel Canyon-inspired folk-rock has been caressing our ears for the past 15 years or so. Dawes has gone through some personnel changes in the past couple of years, paring back to Goldsmith and his brother Griffin and releasing a new album, the fittingly titled Oh Brother just last year. Both Goldsmith brothers were hit hard by the Los Angeles fires, losing their homes and the majority of their beloved instruments. But Goldsmith, as you'll hear, is taking it in stride. In this conversation, Tench and Goldsmith talk about, again, their love of music: Tench even recalls telling his daughter that he loves her more than he loves music—the highest compliment he can pay. Both of these guys are pretty recent fathers, too, which comes up. And of course they can't get around talking about the genius of Tom Petty—and the accidental genius of Heartbreakers' guitarist Mike Campbell's shirt. Listen and you'll understand. Enjoy. Chapters: 0:00 – Intro 2:24 – Start of the chat Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Benmont Tench and Taylor Goldsmith for chatting. On April 18, 1775, a Boston-based silversmith, engraver, and staunch anti-British political operative named Paul Revere set out on the most famous horse ride in American history. A century later it inspired the poem and legend of "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere." But the story is deeper and richer than we've all assumed. Acclaimed writer and editor Kostya Kennedy, through extraordinary and extensive research, has uncovered new and enlightening information on that amazing - including the women who were involved and African Americans in Boston - event presented now in his new book, THE RIDE: Paul Revere and the Night That Saved America (St. Martin's Press, On Sale Date 3/25/25, $30.00). Revere was not the only rider on the night of April 18, 1775, but he was by far the most critical. The Patriots best and most trusted "express rider" he had already completed at least 18 previous rides throughout New England, disseminating intelligence about British movements. But this ride was like no other, and its consequences in the months and years following - as the American Revolution transitioned from isolated skirmishes to a full-fledged war - became one of our founding tales. In THE RIDE, Kostya Kennedy presents a dramatic new narrative of the events of Revere's ride, informed by fresh primary and secondary research into archives, family letters and diaries, contemporary accounts, and more. What he found are never before, or rarely, discussed events, before and after the ride, including: *On the night of the ride, Paul Revere was already the go-to rider for the revolution, called upon to make the most critical rides: in December 1773 he rode hundreds of miles south to New York and Philadelphia to deliver news of The Boston Tea Party.*Revere never said, "The British are coming!" during the ride.*On the night of the ride, Revere rode on a borrowed horse that was then taken from him by British officers; Revere never saw the horse again.*The "sea," in "one if by land, two if by sea," refers to the Charles River.*Revere intentionally did not carry his pistol on the night of the ride, which may have saved his life.*At the start of the ride, Revere was rowed quietly over the Charles River from Boston to Charlestown, along the way eluding lookouts stationed on a British warship.*Other riders galloped through the countryside that night carrying the alarm and nearly all of them were set in motion by Revere's alarm.*Only one other rider departed from Boston, William Dawes, who left over land across Boston Neck; as Dawes got past British guards he pretended he was a drunk country bumpkin. Kennedy's work shows the Revere ride to be vastly more complex than is usually portrayed. It was a coordinated ride of some 40 men that included near-disasters, capture by British forces, and ultimately success. While Paul Revere was central to the ride and its plotting, the author reveals the myriad other men - and women! - who proved crucial to the events that helped set in motion what would lead to America's independence. Thrillingly written in a dramatic heart-stopping narrative, THE RIDE re-tells the essential American story of our nation's awakening for a new generation of readers. Money doesn't make you happy. But it does give you control over your life. And it turns out, that makes you happy. A century ago, in March 1925, Charles G. Dawes was sworn in as vice president of the United States. Being elected vice president of the United States — as Dawes was, alongside Calvin Coolidge, in a landslide — is usually a career pinnacle for an American politician, but Dawes' vice presidency turned out to be more of a footnote in his eventful life. In the second part of this two-part podcast series — presented by nCino — Dawes biographer Annette Dunlap explores Dawes' service as head of logistics for the American Expeditionary Force in World War I (an organizational feat never before pulled off in American military history), his work in international diplomacy during the 1920s, his vice presidency under Calvin Coolidge and how he engineered a bailout for his troubled bank in the throes of the Great Depression.
On this episode, Jennifer is joined by friend and singer-songwriter, Taylor Goldsmith, lead singer of the band Dawes. Brought together by their mutual love of our book of the month, "Pay As you Go", the two have the opportunity to discuss the novel with author Eskor David Johnson. A rollercoaster of an epic, the story follows Slide on his tumultuous journey to find an apartment in the fictional city of Polis. Eskor, Jennifer and Taylor share their creative influences on bringing worlds to life whether it be through writing, film or song.

In the first part of this two-part podcast series — presented by R&T Deposit Solutions — Dawes biographer Annette Dunlap walks listeners through Dawes' early life, his big ideas in banking and his service as comptroller of the currency, and how he built up Chicago as a regional banking center. At this centennial moment, and in this 150th anniversary year for ABA, it's worth reflecting on the fascinating and complex life of Charley Dawes.

Send us a textArthur J Bressan Jr. was of the few iconic filmmakers in the history of gay erotic cinema that saw the importance of weaving and capturing our history while at the same time making it okay to watch educational stuff with your porn. Arthur J. Bressan's gay erotic feature film, Passing Strangers, was a departure from the gay erotic film genre and is one of the first notable examples of his unique tendency to integrate erotic sequences into conventional queer narratives. The fresh-faced gay adult film star Johnny Dawes became an accidental porn star and managed to work for many of the biggest studios of the golden age. Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes joins us to talk about the evolution of humor in his songwriting, why he's transparent with his fans, and maybe the most Bob Dylan of Bob Dylan stories we've ever heard. PART ONE:Paul and Scott address the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area, and encourage people to help make a difference by considering a donation through one of four organizations: Fire Aid (fireaidla.org)The Red Cross (redcross.org)MusiCares (musicares.org)World Central Kitchen (wck.org) PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Taylor Goldsmith of DawesABOUT TAYLOR GOLDSMITH:Taylor Goldsmith is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter for the folk-influenced rock band Dawes. The group, which also includes Taylor's brother, Griffin, has released nine full-length studio albums, six of which have hit the Top 5 on Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums chart, and four of which have hit the Top 10 on Billboard's rock chart. In addition to his work with Dawes, he has been a member of the band Middle Brother with Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit and John McCauley of Deer Tick. Taylor also contributed to T Bone Burnett's New Basement Tapes project—which completed unfinished Bob Dylan songs—alongside Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Rhiannon Giddens, and Elvis Costello. As a songwriter outside the band, Taylor has collaborated with The Killers, Conor Oberst, Brandon Flowers, Robert Ellis, Demi Lovato, and his wife Mandy Moore. The most recent Dawes album, released in October of 2024, is called Oh Brother. Sadly, not long after our conversation, both Taylor and his brother Griffin became victims of the massive Southern California wildfires that devastated portions of the Los Angeles area and severely damaged or destroyed their homes.
