What happens when you let go? Dan Mangan found out when he stopped trying to make the best record of his career — and he ended up with one of the best records of his career. The Juno-winning singer-songwriter says it all goes to show that surrendering control might be the key to making something great. Dan sits down with Tom Power to tell us how a trip into the woods laid the foundation for his new album, “Natural Light,” and why he wrote a song about letting your kids know you love them no matter what they do. If you enjoy this conversation, take a listen to Tom's chat with Max Kerman of Arkells.
The Juno Award-winning musician thought he could write a book, so he did. In Try Hard, Max Kerman gets into the nuts and bolts of building a musical career; from a “Victorian Psycho” to a family of cannibals, Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist Arizona O'Neill shares her favourite horror titles; and three “must-read” historical novels about women artists on this episode of The Next Chapter.
Arkells frontman Max Kerman joins to discuss his book Try Hard: Creative Work in Progress, unpacking the craft behind stage banter, songwriting rule-breaking, and joyful collaboration. He explains why athletes lean on superstition while creatives benefit from breaking routine and planting show tickets around Red Deer with a retired farmer. Plus: Germany elects Merz, but to some of us, Fred Mertz is now Chancellor—and the BBC's schnitzel puns aren't helping. Arkells frontman Max Kerman is taking back the term “try hard” with his first book, “Try Hard: Creative Work in Progress.” It peels back the curtain on the band's creative process, offering a framework for how to bring more creativity into your life, but it's also a defence of striving and wanting to be a better artist. In this conversation with Tom Power, Max dispels some of the myths about what you need to make it in music. He also shares a few stories from the band's history and tells us why Bruce Springsteen is such a big influence on him.
Fans of Canadian rock band Arkells might be wondering to themselves how all those songs came together in the first place. Well, wonder no more. Frontman Max Kerman has written a book all about his band and how they bring those songs to life. It's called "Try Hard: Creative Work in Progress".See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Arkells frontman and now author Max Kerman joins the show to speak about his new book Try Hard: Creative Work in Progress. Jann asks Max about his creative process, the importance of persistence in the arts, and how to navigate the music industry. Max and Jann reflect on true artistic enthusiasm and positivity in creative pursuits, as well as the importance of networking and asking for opportunities. Max also touches on the intricate balance between the creativity and the financial aspects of being an artist, the challenges of navigating social media authentically, and the importance of community engagement. He reflects on the future of music as artists age, the significance of self-reflection, and the impact of their songs on fans. More About Max Kerman and Try Hard: Max Kerman is the frontman of the multiplatinum, award-winning touring band Arkells. Try Hard is his first book. Let's say you see a familiar musician from a globe-trotting, touring band hanging out at your local coffee shop, reading the newspaper and typing away on his laptop. This doesn't look like a musician at work. He seems approachable enough, so you ask him what exactly he does all day. With a grin on his face, he admits the job might not be what you think. So you take a seat, and ask him every question you've ever had about how it all works: the nuts and bolts of writing a song, preparing for a show, marketing a band, and the day-to-day business of a creative life. With each answer—none of it about talent—you realize this musician is a bit of a…try hard. And the mystery of being a creative person isn't actually mysterious at all: it's just exploring ideas with an enthusiastic and determined curiosity. Over and over. Max is that musician in the coffee shop, and this is what reading Try Hard feels like: one-of-a- kind tales from a dynamic frontman, and a companion to your own creative work in progress. With a brick-by-brick attitude, Max explores his own growth in the craft of storytelling and performance, the pleasure to be found in collaboration, and the creative spirit required in sharing your art. *Photo by Nathan Nash* Buy Try Hard: Creative Work in Progress https://www.arkellsmusic.com/ Fountain Tire Sales: Until April 26th, get up to 25% off instantly plus up to $120 off a set of four select Goodyear tires with a mail in rebate. When the Arkells played in St. John's on Friday, Stephanie and Noah were busy getting married, which meant they couldn't make the show. But a friend of theirs reached out to the band. And as luck would have it, the Arkells were staying at the same hotel where the happy couple was celebrating. To get the whole story, the CBC's Amy Feehan spoke with the newlyweds, and with Max Kerman, lead singer of the Arkells.

The Arkells were performing live on stage last month in Quebec City, and it's a scene that is going to be repeated in St. John's tonight. The Morning Show's Jen White reached Arkells frontman Max Kerman on the phone in Toronto late last week to talk about the gig. On today's show, the guys talked a little bit about the Oilers, got vacation recaps from Tyler and Baggedmilk, and welcomed Max Kerman from Arkells to talk about their new album.Kicking off the Thursday episode of the Real Life Podcast, the guys got started with Max Kerman from the Arkells jumping on the podcast to talk about their new album 'Laundry Pile,' how the album came together, life on the road, and whether or not his job ever gets in the way of his love of sports. Needless to say, the guys were pretty damned excited to have a rockstar on the podcast and have him seem like he was having a good time. True story: one of the most ambitious bands on earth hails from Hamilton, Ontario. They're called Arkells and they're here to remind you that rock music can be fun, exhilarating, and colorful. Their latest and sixth album, Blink Once, is full of songs that work both for stadium sing-alongs and those quiet walks home from the bus stop. The architect of these songs is frontman Max Kerman, a musician who isn't shy about the aspirations he has for his friends. On today's podcast, I catch up with Max about what makes that ambition unique, the ways music can uplift us from dark times, and how music has a lot more in common with sports than you'd think. Big ups to Brooklyn Cannery for hosting us for this talk and after you hear this episode, be sure to also check out Max's podcast The Best Hang Podcast with Mike Veerman and Shane Cunningham.
