The 1980s was a changing time not only for McDonald's but for the entire fast food industry. Competition had become cutthroat--and that was just for burgers. But now, the Pizza industry, led by the big three; Pizza Hut, Dominoes, and Little Cesasers, has grown at an astonishing rate.  McDonald's had found success with a few new items, but one new burger turned out to be a pretty big flop. They needed something to get back on track, improve their night-time dining, and maybe divert some of that traffic away from the Big Three and back to the Golden Arches. Maybe they could beat Big Pizza at their own game. This set the stage for McDonald's pizza; a huge swing in the late 80s that has origins going back to 1986. But "McPizza" wasn't the success McDonald's had hoped for. This is the story of the rise and fall of McDonald's pizza. Short Circuit Movie Review: Patreon.com/80s

Julio's status as an undocumented, queer artivist has fueled the contents of his visual art, which depict key individuals and moments of the migrant rights movement. Recorded at the end of a long week, these two elder millennials, Brenda and Julio, from the class of 2001, revisit some of the female vocalists of the '90s who shaped Jullio's early experiences living in the US. Through this chat, we'll take you on a nostalgic journey through the sounds of an era when women were taking center stage fronting bands in the 90s and into the early 2000s; and we'll draw some parallels to some of the leading women in music today.  I asked Julio to pick five songs for us to discuss and you can hear what songs we reference through this playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/02bVhKS9ihFMiGIJGEswUc?si=c8b2e64c809c43ff We had such a fun time approaching our convo like some of our favorite podcasts, Las Cultureistas and Vibe Check, we completely lost track of time. From John Leguizamo imitating Jim Carrey's The Mask, to shockingly bad CGI, the two get into the not-so-good, the pretty dang bad, and the stupendously ugly. It's a trip! Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 34-minutes discussing Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Dr. Doom, and playing a trivia game called "Boo or False?" where, after guessing true or false, Pastor Will Rose has to utilize the trivia fact as a sermon illustration. Also, surfing! As is tradition with most Party Pleaser episodes, the movie begins with a lore-dump to make sure the audience knows what's going on.The filmmaking, aesthetic, and basically the whole package feels like a TV-production, not a Hollywood blockbuster. Will & Melvin talk about the shockingly bad CGI, something that precedes the film in a lot of online film spaces. The subtitles for the film were often adult in nature compared to the actual film, leading Melvin to believe the project was made "PG-13" during editing. Will finally realizes why he can't stand John Leguizamo's Clown; he's doing his version of Jim Carrey's The Mask. The final fight scene is incomprehensible. We're also unpacking what has led to them being such private people today. There was a feud with Spencer Pratt (he was on The Hills if you don't remember his name) and they also unsurprisingly fight with each other... such typical twins. Lorenzo is the son of classic era movie-making duo Arlene Dahl and Fernando Lamas. Lorenzo came into his own playing the grandson of Jane Wyman's character on the legendary prime-time soap, Falcon Crest, and then earned lifelong fans in action and martial arts TV and film, including Renegade and Snake Eater. Lorenzo joins us to talk about life lessons learned in military school, on the set and through fatherhood.A child of Hollywood, Lorenzo's parents divorced when he was two and he often felt like a guest in either home. His mother Arlene Dahl was a starlet in the 1940s and 50s, and a businesswoman, who married six times, disrupting Lorenzo's childhood with moves around the world. Lorenzo later learned to appreciate his mother's love for him and her groundbreaking achievements. As a child, he yearned deeply for the attention and validation of his father, larger-than- life film star, Fernando Lamas who married Esther Williams when Lorenzo was 11 and was often either living in another city or away on location. Summers with his dad meant everything. His father died in his sixties but lived to see his son's success and even directed an episode of Falcon Crest!Lorenzo gives us behind the scenes insights that he learned from Burt Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Wyman and Charlton Heston.  He fills us in on the un-aired final episode of Renegade. Randy from the Straight Chilling Podcast joins Caitlin to talk about I Saw the TV Glow, a surreal new A24 movie from director Jane Schoenbrun. We talk about identity, gender, memory, nostalgia, and the importance of media. With its smart direction, melancholic tone, moody aesthetic, both universal and specific themes, and potent symbolism, it's a real accomplishment of a movie, and we have a lot of love for it. Tangents include: Fred Durst, childhood television, a Mia Goth character FMK, cryptids, first movies, pizza toppings, and, of course, edging.

Twenty-five years ago, this high-energy German-language action thriller started to take the world by storm as it was also released in the U.S. becoming an instant cult phenomenon.  The story it quite simple: Manny (Moritz Bliebtreu) is a young drug courier living in Berlin who has just bungled an important money delivery.....he's scared and desperate, so who does his call?? Why his Flaming Red-haired girlfriend...the titular Lola played by Franka Potente.  She hangs up the phone and starts to....you guessed.....RUN to help him out  And run she does....across Berlin running into a variety of different characters whom she may or may already know....and thus kicks off a relatively short adventure which we see play out multiple times over, each version taking off in different directions.  As directed by Tom Tykwer (The International, Cloud Atlas) and with a catchy soundtrack loaded with catchy EDM, what results is is one of the more memorable graduates from the vaunted (cinematic) Class of '99!Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

We're getting nostalgic for the 80s and 90s today! We're looking back and seeing what we got wrong about the final decades of the millennium. Were parachute pants horrible or awesome? The Rachel haircut--is it timeless or was it a fashion no? We discuss the early days of reality tv that Susie misses. We hear why Kato Kaelin still has habits he created to copy with his role in the "trial of the century." We talk about a failed world record attempt involving balloons and Susie explains why Y2K's computer scare was probably not an overreaction despite the lack of world-ending events that happened on that fateful New Year's Eve. We debate whether Pee Wee Herman got a bad deal, why Oprah may have outstayed her welcome in the cultural milieu, and we do not miss the 90s waif-ish model craze. And even thought we think the low fat diet trend was ridiculous, those Snackwell's cookies were delish.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSusie on X: https://www.x.com/susie_meisterSarah on X: https://www.x.com/ImSarahRiceSponsors:Use code WRONG at the link below to get an exclusive 60% off an annual Incogni plan: https://incogni.com/WRONGSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
