For some it may be confusing when Jesus tells us that he is the light of the world, but then also says that we are the light of the world. It makes us wonder how both can be true. Both theologically, and practically, it is actually quite easy to explain when you look at it through a Catholic lens.

March 16         "I Am the Light of the World" John 8: 12-19            Without light, we have trouble knowing where we are and what is around us.  By calling himself the "light of the world," Jesus reveals that He illuminates this world like no other.  His light reveals where we are and leads us to where we need to be. "I Am"Lent is the season of preparation for Easter, a time to reflect deeply on Jesus- his identity, teachings, and death on the cross—so we can fully understand and celebrate His resurrection. This year, we will focus on the "I am" statements in the Gospel of John. While all four Gospels include instances where Jesus uses the Greek phrase "ego eimi," meaning "I am," John's Gospel records Jesus doing so over 30 times, more than twice the other Gospels combined. Jesus says I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD. Join me in considering that today.First, we have got to just stand in awe that He invented it. The third verse in the whole Bible says so. We'll skip some of the science, but what a feat to design it, to implement it, and then to sustain it for all these years. I am amazed at the thought of it.Then Light separates days and seasons and years. (Gen 1:14-18) Essentially, it gives us our way to understand TIME.Then it provides. Every thing we put in our mouths to eat first came from LIGHT. Light powers photosynthesis which harvests light to make sugars. That is stored and passed from plants to animals. We are eating light, whether it is a piece of lettuce, a nice steak, or a milk dud. We are literally EATING LIGHT. Then it gives beauty. Think of sunrises and fall trees, and watercolor paintings and the patterns on a White Tiger's face. Light gives us all these wonderful things.Then there is energy and current light and heat. Oil, Gas and all the fossil fuels are from light. So is wind and solar for that matter.Then there is information and especially protection. He will use this as He explains Himself using this creation and this metaphor. We will get to that tomorrow. But for today, just enjoy and appreciate as you EAT LIGHT.

Thunder crashed loudly, and Raya gasped as the lights blinked once and then everything went black. "Oh no!" Garrett exclaimed. "The storm knocked out our power. What dowe do now, Dad?" "Don't move," Dad told them. "I'll go find some candles." "I'll come too." Garrett jumped up, took one step, and stumbled over something. "Ow!" he howled as he got up and sank back into his seat. Soon Dad returned with a lighted candle in each hand. "There--how's that?" Dad carefully set the candles down on the coffee table. "Now we can see again." "This is nice," said Mom, leaning back in her chair. "I like candlelight." "Well, it's not very bright," said Garrett, "but it's better than the dark." He rubbed his foot. "Now I see what I tripped over--a book that fell on the floor." Raya, who had been reading before the power went out, leaned toward the candles to see better, but then put down her book. "It's still pretty dark for reading. I'm glad we don't have to use candlelight all the time, like they did hundreds of years ago." "I am too," Dad agreed. "But even today people live in the dark." "They do?" Garrett asked. "You mean, like blind people?" "Actually, I was thinking of people living in the darkness of sin. That's much worse than physical blindness," said Dad. "If we've never seen the light of Jesus in our lives, we often think everything is just fine. But it really isn't. The darkness keeps us from seeing clearly." "Like I couldn't see anything on the floor tonight," said Garrett. "I thought I could walk out of here, but I tripped as soon as I took a step." Mom nodded. "The good news is that no one has to stay in the dark. Jesus is the light of the world, and He offers His light to anyone who will trust in Him. His light is much more powerful than this candlelight." As she spoke, the lights suddenly came back on and lit up the room. "All right!" exclaimed Raya. "No more darkness here tonight!" LYNNE M. The world's message is "do what feels right." As a church, we often counter that with lots of rules. But as we find wrong in others, we can forget about the grace given to us. Jesus says, "I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD." He didn't come to condemn us, but to give us light. Finding your way is always a matter of finding the Light.
