What would you rather hear at the gates of heaven – “Well done, good and faithful servant”, or “Away from me, you evildoer”? That's a silly question, isn't it? But apparently, there are those among us who assume they will hear the former welcome but will receive the latter rejection. Want to know how to make sure this doesn't happen to you? Pay attention to your fruit! Follow us for more weekly messages from Eastside pastors!

Chances are you've heard someone ask this question or maybe you have asked it yourself. For some, dating, much less finding the one is a frustrating and ultimately defeating experience leading to a sense of hopelessness. There are many reasons we don't connect. In this episode Alvean and Doug talk about the ways in which we can get in our own way by setting unrealistic expectations, looking in the wrong places, or failing to invest sufficient effort in learning about a potential mate. According to the CDC, about 659,000 people in the United States die from heart disease each year. That's 1 in every 4 deaths. A staggering 100 BILLION dollars were spent several years ago on stents and bypasses. But how effective are those dangerous, invasive, and costly procedures in improving the patient's quality of life? Is there an alternative? Today's guest is Dr. Dean Ornish, the founder and president of the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute. He is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and the author of seven books, all national bestsellers. Dr. Dean Ornish has directed revolutionary research proving that lifestyle changes can often reverse or undo the progression of many of the most common and costly chronic diseases and even begin reversing aging at a cellular level. He documented his findings in his landmark book UnDo It! Dr. Dean Ornish studied medicine under Dr. Michael DeBakey, an American vascular surgeon and cardiac surgeon, scientist, and medical educator known for his trailblazing efforts in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Today, Dr. Dean Ornish is helping people regain their health with his program, The Only Program Scientifically Proven to Reverse Heart Disease, which is reimbursed by Medicare from anywhere in the U.S. 'Nuff said! Let's dive into this eye-opening episode and UnDo It! “When I was in medical school, we were taught that the only way to change your genes is to change your parents, meaning you can't do anything about it. But we did a study with Craig Venter, who was the first to decode the human genome, and we found that over 500 genes were changed in just three months. Same lifestyle changes turning on the good genes, turning off the bad genes in simple terms. And there are mechanisms. There is something called methylation, which is a molecule that's like a switch that can turn on or turn off a gene. Technically, the genes are the same, but the expression of the genes—if you can turn off a gene that causes cancer, then it's as though you're changing your genes. Or different proteins, histone, and non-histone proteins, they act as switches, and sirtuins and others that turn on and turn off the genes. And we found that over 500 genes were changed in just three months.” - Dr. Dean Ornish What we discuss in this episode: - Dr. Dean Ornish walks us through that pivotal moment when he met Woodstock Guru Sri Swami Satchidananda and how that encounter changed the direction of his life - How stress increases our predisposition to cardiovascular diseases and the worst thing about being depressed - Is there something wrong with traditional medicine? - Dr. Dean Ornish talks about the joy that his work brings, enabling people to have options vs. undergoing costly medical procedures - How to UnDo It! Eat Well, Move More, Stress Less, Love More - How comprehensive lifestyle changes influence DNA methylation and gene expression - Does eating specific foods (sweet potato meals vs. blueberry vs. cheeseburgers) influence cancer genes? - What hope do we have in getting the message to people about the way we view our health and the overall healthcare system? - Choosing a plant-based diet - What you gain is so much better than what you give up! Record stores are where it's at. This past weekend I was DJing an all vinyl set, and a young kid came up to me, wanted to know about ‘vinyls' and counting to 4, quarter beats per measure- and he said he doesn't really go to record stores. I was gobsmacked. Ralph Cross, a co-founding owner of B-Sides recently passed away, so I play local Madison, Wi. dream pop band Ivory Library…Produced by Butch Vig…and Ralph. Read our book, The Score That Matters - https://amzn.to/4ggpYdW Full shownotes at www.LearningLeader.com The Learning Leader Show With Ryan Hawk We are celebrating episode #600 with Keith Hawk and AJ Hawk Tell a story about an awesome leader you worked with... Ron Ullery – I'm a firm believer that people either live up to or down to your expectations. And most people set their expectations for themselves too low. So it's on you as a leader to raise those expectations for them. Demand more because you know they can do more. Tyler Cowen – The high return activity of raising others' aspirations. Encouraged someone who was going for an MBA to get a Phd. At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they might have in mind. It costs you relatively little to do this, but the benefit to them, and to the broader world, may be enormous. What helps you give a great speech? How do you prepare? Ask, "What do I want my audience to do after seeing my speech?" Interview members of their team. Learn their terminology, challenges, what's going well, what's not, what are their goals, etc... Practice, practice, practice. Say it out loud. Rehearse so that once you're on stage, you can let it rip. What did the best teams you've been on do differently than the average teams? The best players on the best teams always practiced the hardest. They set the tone for the work ethic of the team. They chose extra work. They set high standards and they demanded others raise their level of performance. The best teams hung out together outside of work. AJ was a Captain of the Green Bay Packers Super Bowl-winning team in 2010-2011... That team regularly hung out together outside of working hours, shared lots of meals, and knew each other extremely well. They trusted each other. Tell a story about how you've shown resilience… Failed and what did you do next? The Miami/Ben Roethlisberger story - The world doesn't care what you think you deserve. The primary goal is focused on adding value to others' lives. AJ shared a story from his sophomore year at Ohio State. His defensive coordinator, Coach Mark Dantonio sat with him 1 on 1 watching each play of the Michigan game. A day he'll never forget for how hard it was, how upset he was, and how determined he was to respond. AJ never lost to Michigan again in his career after that. Pistol shared a story about the time when the new CEO wanted to bring in his own head of sales (which was Pistol's job). Instead of complaining and leaving the company, he got creative and offered a new idea and a great way to leverage all the skills and knowledge he developed from being at the company for so long. It is amazingly rare for the head of sales to stay at a company after he's been replaced. But he thrived in the role and made the company better. Front line obsession – Pistol's story of the legendary Mert McGill going to the Supreme Court to demo LexisNexis and earning the most important sale in the company's history. I love stories about leaders proactively taking action and not being afraid to do the work. Update since Episode #500: Built the Learning Leader Team -- Officially working full-time with Sherri Coale, Brook Cupps, Geron Stokes, and Eli Leiker. We are working with leaders from a wide variety of companies throughout the U.S. The magic of the Pat McAfee Show -- They are unafraid. They say what others are thinking but are too afraid to say. They are authentic and fully themselves. They have great role clarity. Everyone knows and embraces their roles and excels at them. The End of the Podcast Draft – You're stranded on a deserted island. You have one iPad. On that iPad has 5 TV shows (and nothing else). Which shows do you choose? This is a competition with a clear winner and losers. The object is to win the draft.

After ragging on people who surely don't deserve the veneration they receive from faithful Christians around the world, for their questionable morality, or even dubious historicity, it's time for us to look at a heptad of saints who are genuinely good role models--at least on the surface....For these saints (as opposed to Teresa of Calcutta), poverty was an obstacle to be overcome, rather than a virtue to perpetuate. We preach power through education, and so did these seven reasonably good saints.Angela Merici was a Venecian with no recorded miracles, but people insisted that she was a saint because of the work she did to support the public education of young people.Elizabeth Seton was a big fan of public education, and used her great fortune to support young people in their pursuit to better their lives. Seton was the first American Saint.Vincent de Paul has a wild story of slavery and alchemy, and he went on to do everything he could to raise people out of poverty, and support young people to get vocational training.Father Damien (Jozef de Veuster) was a servant of the people in a Hawaiian leper colony, where he gave his life in service of his fellow men.Katharine Drexel, the second American Saint, spent her fortune setting up schools for BIPOC students all over the United States of America.Elizabeth of Hungary was a princess with some wild and dubious miracles, but she spent her short life in her own hospital where she cared for the poor and the sick.John Bosco wrote an awful lot, but he also worked with young men to help get them reliable and profitable work. All this and more.... Support us on Patreon or you can get our merch at Spreadshop.Join the Community on Discord.Learn more great religion factoids on Facebook and Instagram.

Three authors, three books, three ways to enjoy your summer reading!I invited three of my returning authors to tell us about their new books, all coming out during June, 2024. There's something for everyone here, to wit:Fork Social Media! (And the algorithm it rode in on). Sudi “Rick” Karatas returns for his third visit to Type. Tune. Tint. with stories of social media users who ended up booted, suspended, tossed because the algorithms can't take a joke. We agree that it's necessary to guard against hate speech and posts/comments that advocate violence and crime. Bravo! Unfortunate, the policing is done by little pieces of AI programming, algorithms, that don't know that misinterpret you and a friend “shooting the breeze” as advocating violence. Or the guy who needed to “bomb” his basement for fleas. Or the Dolly Parton impersonator, legit and approved by Dolly herself, who is frequently banned for impersonating someone. Maybe you have a story of being tossed into Facebook jail!I Like Black People...The Good Ones! Author Marklyn “Mr. Direct” Johnson prides himself of speaking plainly and honestly about everything from gender to race. As a 50-ish Black man, he's lived a life of well-meaning and not-so-well-meaning people saying things he calls “microagressions,” little things that marginalize or insult people of color. “You're one of the good ones,” is a classic, along with “You're a credit to your race,” and “You speak so well” are just a few. He also has a modern and sobering take on Black history.Island Serenade. Charles Wiedenmann's first foray into fiction is a light and airy romance novel that pairs a sweet hotel housekeeper with a high-powered rock star at a luxury resort on a tropical island. The story has no sharp edges, a perfect beach read designed to be pure escapist fare for summer. Charles unleashes his imagination to all of our benefit resulting in an easy story to fall in love with.I brought all three authors on board for this special summer episode.Whadya think of this episode>TK Books LLC Contemporary fiction and science fiction; ebooks, softcover, hardcover and audiobooks.Support the Show.

For episode 195, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with fellow co-host Steve Prusakowski continuing to handle the behind the scenes Emmy coverage, which we've just wrapped Phase One on. This one, believe it or not, involves some chatter about Madame Web. That leads into a larger discussion of bad movies. Plus, Myles and I both continue to be very taken by Thelma (my review is here). There's your questions as well, plus a quick version of the IMDb game. It's not a long episode, but it's a rock solid one... As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 195th one to date (here's to many more). Emily Landis is here with us this week on Stories Behind the Songs! It was so good to have her onstage with us. Emily is killing it right now after being in Nashville for 12 years - she has recent cuts with artists like Tiera Kennedy, Dylan Scott and Gabby Barrett. She got her first #1 hit with Gabby Barrett's “The Good Ones” written back in 2018 which ended up getting multiple CMA noms for Song and Single of the Year. You'll hear how this song started with just a title and was almost trashed - we're very glad she didn't do that! We also go over “Stuck In My Ways” - one she wrote for Lauren Watkins who is the current opener for Morgan Wallen. This song's writing process began similarly to “The Good Ones” and has an awesome story behind it. While sitting together this week, we also discussed Emily losing her first pub deal with Big Machine which motivated her to make more contacts, play more rounds and get her name around Music Row. We cover the story behind “Chasin' Tornados” - written with Jamie Moore and Lainey Wilson, and Emily answered the question - melody or lyric first when she's writing songs? And, as always, Emily performs a couple of her songs for us - “The Good Ones” and “Chasin' Tornados.” If you enjoyed this episode, make sure to share it with your friends and give us a follow. It is our mission to bring you the Stories Behind the Songs from the songwriters themselves and it's because of YOU that we get to keep going. Let's jump in - here's Emily Landis. In this practical episode of "Practical Stoicism," I delve into the critical art of forming good habits, a cornerstone of personal growth and self-improvement. Starting with a deep dive into the nature of bad habits—those that are not chemical addictions or compulsions but rather result from habituated choices—I draw from the profound insights of Epictetus on the realms of choice and control. I emphasize that our actions and behaviors are within our grasp, aiming to guide you through the transformative process of becoming your best self by making deliberate choices. By clearly distinguishing between what is within our control and what is not, I set the stage for overcoming undesirable habits. With wisdom from Chrysippus and practical strategies for reshaping our behavior, this episode offers a Stoic roadmap to replace chronic behaviors with virtuous habits, guiding you on a transformative journey towards self-discipline and enlightened character development. -- Become a Patron: https://stoicismpod.com/members Plant some trees: https://stoicismpod.com/trees Download Stoicism260: https://stoicismpod.com/app Subscribe to the newsletter: https://practicalstoicism.net/subscribe Pre-order my book: https://stoicismpod.com/book Podcast Artwork by Randy Johnson: https://originalrandy.com Learn more about your ad choices. Do you have a habit that you find increasingly difficult to break? Or is there a good habit that you wish to incorporate into your daily routines but you can't seem to make it stick?Very often we resolve to stop a certain obsessive behavior - overeating, biting our nails, being attached to our phone etc., or to begin a new commitment - spending more time with family, going to the gym, starting a new project etc. Armed with determination and enthusiasm, we set out on our way with gusto and a positive mindset, ready to tackle the challenge. And yet, despite our good intentions, after a little while we tend to gravitate right back to our old ways, playing out past patterns, stuck in a groove -- which describes the very nature of a habit. It feels like the habit is wired into our very beings, seemingly impossible to break free from. Why indeed is it so difficult to break habits? Is there anything that we can do about it? And at the same time, how do we go about building good habits? Please join Rabbi Simon Jacobson for an important discussion that affects virtually every aspect of our lives. Are we creatures of habit? Are our lives predetermined? Can we truly change our habits and structures? Discover that you have two parts to you -- one that is indeed hard wired, making it difficult to break old habits. But we also have a side to us, our souls, which is in some ways indeterministic. And by accessing our souls we have the power to transcend our defined conventions and proclivities, helping us break bad habits while also building good ones and scaling new heights in actualizing our enormous potential.
Multifactor Authentication | Active Directory | Access Brokers If one takes a cursory look at cybersecurity, one may conclude that Multifactor Authentication (MFA) may be the answer to cyber woes. That might have been true a couple of years ago, but malicious actors are adapting to every blockade put in their path. Today, we sat down with several identity management experts to get updated on current threats and best practices for reducing the attack surface for federal technology. MFA has a proven weak point. Researchers have discovered that when an individual leaves an MFA session the session can remain open, leaving opportunities for attackers. Even if MFA is performing flawlessly, we live in a dynamic world. People are changing constantly; systems must be designed to adapt to today's rapid changes. MFA just isn't robust enough to counter today's threats. Deeper authentication must be considered. Active Directory is all pervasive in the commercial world as well as in government. Some estimates give it a 90% market share. Jay Bonci from the Air Force observes that systems architects must design systems to eliminate weaknesses of Active Directory. Andre Murphy from CrowdStrike describes a new concept called, “access brokers.” One can purchase identities much like shoes. This leads to attackers walking in the front door with no need to break any locks. In other words, there is no need for malicious code when you have the keys to the front door.

History has an abundance of cases that point out that "great" ideas in practice have a 99% tendency to fail exponentially. Be it investing in a pyramid scheme, getting hammered on a Sunday night, gambling, playing the lottery, or investing in crypto. In a world of complex problems it's understandable why people reach for ideas that sound like easy solutions. But why do people keep repeating dumb ideas? In this episode, I discuss why bad ideas sound better than good ones.
