"Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story" is the second season of the American biographical crime drama anthology television series Monster, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. The season centers on the 1989 parricides of José (Javier Bardem) and Kitty Menendez (Chloë Sevigny), who were killed by their sons, Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch). It uses the Rashomon effect as a narrative device by presenting key events through multiple perspectives and unreliable narrators, leaving the "truth" open to interpretation. The season achieved global commercial success, debuting as the number-one series on Netflix worldwide, the most-viewed streaming content on the Nielsen Streaming Chart, and the third most-watched Netflix series in the second half of 2024. At the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, it earned 11 nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Koch and Sevigny, respectively. Koch and Sevigny were both kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work and experiences on the limited series, which you can listen to below. This program ventures into corners of Africa we rarely hear from, guided by adventurous field recordists and crate diggers. The Zomba Prison Project is a set of recordings by inmates at a maximum security prison in Malawi, one of the poorest nations on earth. The project's debut CD was nominated for a Grammy Award. Here, we speak with the producer, Ian Brennan, and hear tracks from a volume of soulful, even heartbreaking, songs from the prison. We then go back to the 1960s and ‘70s in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso (then Upper Volta) to sample a gorgeous set recordings by Volta Jazz, Dafra Star, Les Imbattables Leopards and more. We hear from Florent Mazzoleni, the author and intrepid vinyl collector behind the new box set, Bobo Yéyé: Belle Époque in Upper Volta. Produced by Banning Eyre APWW #738

Experts have called Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's new Netflix show, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, murder porn. Does it seem like we are seeing more and more anger and rage lately? Do you or someone you know have issues with anger or managing emotions? Whether through road rage, yelling, political divide, or even outward violence, people seem more upset than ever. What's underneath it all? According to today's guest, Ian Brennan, anger masks fear, frustration, and sadness. As an author and expert in conflict resolution, today he discusses ways to help cool anger. He has been involved with the Betty Ford Center as well as other addiction treatment places and also talks about how drug use and alcohol can compound the rage. Ian describes how some people are willing to injure themselves and others, or even willing to die, because of their unresolved anger. They may feel threatened. They may also be in denial. Many angry people deny that they are mad at all. Anger can cover up any type of fear. One way to begin to resolve the situation is to ask people how they feel. The more specific they can be, the better. An angry person tends to be more controlling, or even a perfectionist, as they want assurances. Those expectations can lead to tremendous disappointments. They may light up quickly. Surrender is a way to help – it's an acceptance of where things are. Frequent and brief conversations about emotions can help also to avoid outbreaks of rage. You can start by asking “What” questions, rather than “Why.” Begin by asking the angry person, “What happened?” then lead into “What do you feel?” When you intervene, these questions interrupt patterns. This can lead to constructive conversation and communication. It may help them to feel empowered and less controlled so they can offer information. You can also ask questions starting with “How,” such as “How can I help?” By using needs-based communication people can begin to feel heard. This can then lead to more solution-oriented conversations and help to diffuse the anger. Ian has taught classes on anger management for several decades and has brought his patented high-energy, lightning-speed delivery presentations to more than 100,000 people across the USA. During his many years on staff in locked emergency-psychiatric facilities in Oakland, CA (the job rated as the most dangerous in CA for assault), his teachings spread by word-of-mouth until he was soon regarded as an expert on the topics of anger management, conflict resolution, solution-oriented communication, and violence prevention. In 2011 he published his first book, “Anger Antidotes: How Not to Lose Your S#&!.” Info: https://violenceprevention.us

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ian Brennan Zoom video!GRAMMY Award-winning music producer and lauded field-recording trailblazer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Zomba Prison Project, Ustad Saami) continues his acclaimed recording career of over 50 releases with the first album ever made featuring the wisdom and voices of those over 100 years old. The Oldest Voice in the World (Azerbaijan) "Thank you for bringing me back to the sky" takes Brennan and his wife, Italian-Rwandan filmmaker and photographer Marilena Umuhoza Delli to the remote villages of the "long-livers" just miles from the Iran border. 22 pieces comprise the album with five bonus tracks featuring artists that Brennan has collaborated with over his acclaimed career: The Kronos Quartet, Tinariwen, Malawi Mouse Boys, Yuka Honda, and The Good Ones (Rwanda). In late 2021, Brennan and Delli traveled to the southern mountains of Azerbaijan, where legend has it that the world's oldest man hailed from there -- having survived to age 168. Brennan and Delli made the ambitious excursion amid a coincidental deluge of social media trends going public on the best practices for "staying young." Visiting rural villages to capture the heart of the under-represented population of the oldest people on earth, the centenarians' stories eloquently came to life and serve as an anti-ageism antidote.Upon their arrival in Azerbaijan, villagers had been ravaged by COVID-19 and most residents over 100 had sadly died in recent months, including the oldest known woman in the country. Traversing from village to village, they came to discover centenarian after centenarian living without indoor plumbing, sleeping on floor-bound mattresses, and what seemed to Brennan, that they were almost anticipating their arrival with such a warm reception by the Talysh people.Brennan is renowned for scouring the far stretches of the globe to document singers in an uninhibited, authentic fashion. From recordings in regions such as Rwanda, Malawi, South Sudan, Karachi, Comoros, Palestine, Ukerewe Island, Cambodia, and Romania, this latest project brings him to a region where no outsiders ever wander. The villages were so remote, Brennan's Azerbaijani speaking companion from the city advised that the locals' words were completely unintelligible. And even the Talysh speaker from the valley below could only make out less than 80% of what was being said in the remote mountain villages. As they began meeting the centenarians, one theme was ever-present once they sang. Most would sing of their mother, and their secret to life was simple, "I was loved." Voices were recorded in their natural living environments. For instrumentation along with their voices, Brennan used the wood-burning furnace providing heat for the house, a walker, their own footsteps, a broken bedroom door, or the farm flour grinder.Brennan and Delli experienced raw emotion from the centenarians. A former shepherd was singing and became overcome and shakily stood up to leave the room after having sung a song that his mother used to sing.We want to hear from you! TW: Includes Discussion of Netflix's Dahmer Series DAHMER-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story just joined Stranger Things Season 4 and Squid Games in surpassing the billion-hour mark in viewing time, making it one of the most watched series on Netflix. The first installment of the anthology series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan is only the third title to hit that milestone in just 60 days, and the second-ever English-language series. Starring Peters as the notorious serial killer, DAHMER weaves a compelling narrative exploring the institutional failures, systemic racism and pervasive homophobia that enabled Jeffrey Dahmer to murder 17 young men over the course of 13 years. The chilling series also focuses on his many victims, and gives voice to long-overlooked figures in the story such as Glenda Cleveland (Niecy Nash), who repeatedly tried to warn the authorities about her suspicious neighbor.
