Carnival is bacchanal and the PNM is in full canaval mode. After a week of no signatures and rumours of big divides, all MPs came out of Balisier House in Godfather mode kissing the rings of Stuart Young. And after the PNM defenders and apologists attacked the media for reporting that Amery Browne  was replacing Dr. Rowley in Diego Martin West, the roll out of this exact plan is now in place.Kamla Persad Bissessar & Gary Griffith's responses to Stuart Young being announced as the Prime Minister are on opposite ends of the spectrum as one is playing pretty mad while the other plays blue devil. The carnival bacchanal ain't gonna be left behind either as Trinidad Killa jumped on Full Blown's Big Links Riddim and is left tout int he cold as no approvals seem to be forthcoming. We haven't heard a peep from Machel Montano or Yung Bredda or any of the Full Blown team but Killa has heard from their lawyers. We must take some time to celebrate Rachel Montano on NPR Tiny Desk and congratulate him for pulling together an all star band featuring the likes of Ettienne Charles and Kyle Peters and delivering a stellar performance. NPR Tiny Desk is 15 years old and arguably stronger than ever. It helped Usher perform at the Super Bowl. It helped Tank and the Bangas break through to a Grammy nomination. And it elevated the perception of artists like T-Pain and Mac Miller. But how does Tiny Desk maintain its influence? Any company can host a stripped-down acoustic series for artists to perform in their office. But even if they did, it wouldn't hit the same.In this episode, we break down the dynamics that make Tiny Desk work, the tradeoffs that the show balances, how it maintains its status over time, and what the future may hold.Listen to me and Tati Cirisano from MIDiA Research break it all down.Make sure you listen to our Chartmetric stat of the episode.

Connecticut-born, Austin-launched, and Brooklyn-based indie folk/rock singer/songwriter Rachel Rose, known for her rich, nostalgic sound blending soul, folk, rock, and pop. Her debut EP "100/10/1" dropped in 2020, followed by the second EP "And One More Thing," produced by Charles Myers. Collaborations with industry heavyweights like John Alagia and Tyler Chester underscore her rising prominence. With sold-out shows at Rockwood Music Hall and Babys All Right, Rachel's career soared when she opened the Hootenanny Sessions at Cafe Wha? post a 50-year hiatus. A recent 3-month residency at The Bitter End and a slot as a featured artist at SXSW 2024 cement her status. She's shared stages with Juliet Ivy, Theo Kandel, and more, even gracing The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Her original track "Back To The Beginning" made waves, landing in NPR Tiny Desk's Top Shelf Segment. Rachel's brand partnerships, including AEA Microphones and Virgin Hotels, showcase her versatility, while her performance of the national anthem at a Rangers MSG game underscored her impact beyond music. We will get to hear about one of the biggest risks--quitting her full-time job to pursue a full-time career in music. She will be performing at the Brooklyn Bowl on May 9th.

Supreme Court to hear a case that could change homeless encampment sweeps. Also, the PPIC discusses retail theft and robbery rates. Finally, Black American folk musician Jake Blount to perform at The Sofia. SCOTUS Homelessness Camping Case Last Friday, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a case that could change existing restrictions on criminalizing homelessness and sweeping encampments in western states - including California.  CalMatters Homelessness Reporter Marisa Kendall breaks down both the new case and current precedent, and what the high court's ruling could mean for both cities and people who are unhoused across the state. CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that is a content sharing partner with public media stations across the state. PPIC on Retail Theft and Robbery Rates in California Since the pandemic, California's crime rate has dominated news headlines– from a reported increase in violent crime, retail theft and robberies in many of the state's largest counties. But when you look at the data, gauging that increase – or whether there is even an increase at all – largely depends on what year you use as a comparison. Overall, although violent crime has trended upward in recent years, it still remains drastically below the peak in the 1990s. And there is a similar caveat with retail thefts and robberies. Shoplifting, commercial burglaries and robberies in California have jumped since 2020. But when you narrow in on the 15 largest counties, some have actually experienced a drop during the same time period. So it's complicated. Magnus Lofstrom is the Policy Director of Criminal Justice as well as a Senior Fellow at the PPIC, and joins us with more about the nuance within crime data. Black American Folk Musician Jake Blount at The Sofia is an Afrofuturist folk musician and ethnomusicology PhD student who is a scholar of Black American folk with a focus on the profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined roots music and Americana. Jake will be performing at The Sofia on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. You can watch his NPR “Tiny Desk” performance here.

Brace yourself for one of the wildest musician stories you've ever heard. Amarillo, Texas' Hayden Pedigo makes gorgeous fingerstyle guitar music inspired by the likes of Will Ackerman and John Fahey. But Hayden has broken every mold imaginable when it comes to his career in music.  The son of a truck stop preacher, Hayden worked at local Amarillo banks, recording music after-hours and aggressively reaching out to his music heroes to see if they wanted to collaborate (they often did). He finally ditched the life of a bank teller, got signed to indie label Mexican Summer, and - thanks to a quirky internet video - found himself running for Amarillo city council (he came in second). As if that wasn't unique enough, at some point, Gucci spotted him and recruited him to be in a fashion show.  Stranger still, here's a working musician with a guitar and string endorsement deal (Yamaha and D'Addario) and an NPR Tiny Desk concert under his belt whose only touring to date has been opening for big indie acts like Jenny Lewis and Devendra Banhardt. We talk about growing up in Amarillo, his Opus acoustic guitar, his recent signing to Yamaha, and so much more. You'll love it and you'll love Hayden's unique approach towards his art. We had the pleasure of interviewing NIKI over Zoom video!Jakarta-born, LA-based singer-songwriter, and producer NIKI releases the visual for her track “The Apartment We Won't Share.”Directed by Isaac Ravishankara, the new visual for “The Apartment We Won't Share” compliments the nostalgic track that reflects on what could have been with a past relationship. NIKI is contemplative as she strolls through her apartment alone before picking up her guitar to craft the introspective song. Most recently, NIKI made her NPR Tiny Desk debut where she delivered a carefully crafted & stripped-back performance of a handful of songs from her sophomore album Nicole, before closing with her hit single “Every Summertime."Following her sold-out North American headlining tour last fall, NIKI will be bringing her live show to cities across the globe with her 2023 world tour which will span across North America, Asia, Europe, and Australia. The run also includes performances at festivals including Head in the Clouds NYC & LA, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands. The full list of dates is below; please visit https://nikizefanya.com/ for more information.Previously, NIKI released the music video for her track “Backburner.” The video is deliberate and intimate, taking viewers into her world as she watches old footage recorded on her camcorder and re-lives fond memories of a past relationship.Last summer, NIKI released her sophomore album Nicole, a project that sees her where she shines, returning to her singer-songwriter roots in a carefully crafted coming-of-age juncture that sees present-day NIKI meet with her teenage self. The album was released to critical acclaim by the likes of NPR, Billboard, Vanity Fair, and V Magazine, who hailed Nicole as “NIKI's piece-de-resistance that kicks off an exceptional new chapter for the burgeoning songstress.” NIKI also released her live album Live at the Wiltern last month, which features live recordings performed at the final show of NIKI's sold-out headlining tour at the Los Angeles venue last October.NIKI has had an impressive career thus far, amassing over 2.1 billion streams worldwide and opening for Taylor Swift on tour when she was just 15. In addition to performing at Coachella and embarking on her headlining North American tour last fall, she has also headlined at 88rising's Head in the Clouds Festival in Los Angeles, New York, Manila, and Jakarta.ABOUT NIKISince breaking through with her 2018 EP Zephyr, NIKI has made a powerful imprint on the pop scene, amassing a devoted global fanbase with over 2.1 billion streams to date and making history as the first Indonesian artist ever to perform at Coachella. But after delivering her critically acclaimed debut album MOONCHILD, the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter felt compelled to completely reexamine her artistic process—a move that found her revisiting the vast catalog of unfiltered and indie-folk-leaning songs she'd created in high school. As she returned to the stream-of-consciousness approach to songwriting that defined her earliest material, the 23-year-old musician soon arrived at her sophomore album Nicole: a boldly self-possessed body of work written entirely by NIKI, spotlighting her finespun storytelling and warmly expressive vocals more fully than ever before. With the album's first half comprised of new or never-before-heard songs and its latter half featuring her favorite tracks from her widely beloved YouTube channel, NIKI imbues her songs with the kind of lived-in specificity that immediately reconnects the listener with the rush and devastation of their own first love.We want to hear from you! It's 2018. I'm working with a Syrian-born American filmmaker named Sam to get him ready to hit the TEDx stage. We're forming the foundation of his Talk--his idea worth spreading--when I ask him, “Why was making this particular film so important to you?” And he responds, “It's imperative to amplify the voices of what Syrians are going through. Their voices are muted right now and giving voice to the voiceless should be an obligation. That's why people literally risked their lives to make this film.” With that, we have his idea worth spreading: For society to survive, the voices of repressed people must be revived.  By the way, Sam's film, Little Gandhi, becomes the first official Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film and goes on to win several awards. And most importantly of all, Sam's willingness to stand up for and speak on what he believes has changed individual and collective stories around the world...which leads me to my special guest today! Lynn Andrews is a versatile artist who has been standing up for what she believes, literally. As a singer, actress, and writer, she has a stake in bringing stories to life as part of her life's work and is fresh off the picket line protesting as part of the SAG-AFTRA strike. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, listen in as she and I dive into the idea of using your story to stand up and speak up, whether your voice matters at all, and how to influence the stories that are told. You'll also discover the answer to questions such as: What's it like participating in a community of storytellers standing up for themselves? What's one thing you need to be mindful of as you speak up for your cause during a protest or strike? What opportunity can you choose to take with an Improv performance, beyond the humor? And why does your profession not matter when it comes to storytelling? And along the way, you'll hear about trimmed trees, strongly-worded umbrellas, memorable theater moments, and more! What you will learn in this episode: Why your voice matters in changing an unfolding story Why people sometimes hesitate to speak up with their story How to get an audience to love a villainous character Who is Lynn? Lynn Andrews, an artist excelling as an actor, singer, and writer, was born in Denver, Colorado. Her passion for the arts led her to pursue training at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in New York City. Lynn won the coveted role of Miss Hannigan in the national tour of Annie. The New York Times praised her, saying she "has a wonderful way with a shimmy." During her time in New York, Lynn showcased her singer-songwriter abilities as one-third of the girl group The Shirtwaist Sisters, highlighted by the NPR Tiny Desk competition. In 2017, Lynn made her way to Los Angeles, where she appeared in popular television shows like The Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and Dead To Me, as well as the critically acclaimed film The Dark and the Wicked. Her recent appearances on The Resident and American Auto continue to solidify her status as an accomplished and skillful performer. This week, we're talking about KeKe Palmer's baby daddy tweet that had everyone in their feelings. He tweeted his disapproval in response to a viral video of Usher serenading Palmer, who sported a stylish black bodysuit underneath a sheer, patterned dress at the singer's concert. “It's the outfit tho… you a mom,” he replied to the clip on Twitter. What do we think of his comment? Was he out of line or just keeping it real? We'll break it down and share our thoughts on this controversial topic. We're also celebrating Lil Wayne's classic album “Tha Carter” that turned 20 years old this week. We'll revisit some of our favorite tracks, memories and moments from this iconic project that changed the game and influenced a whole generation of rappers. We'll also discuss Juvenile's lit performance on NPR Tiny Desk, where he brought back some of his hits like “Back That Azz Up” and “Slow Motion”. How did he do? Did he represent the culture well? Next, we'll talk about NBA off-season drama: where will Dame Dolla end up? The Portland Trail Blazers star has been rumored to be unhappy with his team and looking for a trade. Where do we think he should go? What team would be the best fit for him? We'll debate and analyze the possible scenarios and outcomes for one of the best players in the league. Finally, we'll touch on SCOTUS overturning affirmative action, a decision that could have major implications for education, employment and diversity in America. What do we think of this ruling? How will it affect us as black people? We'll share our opinions, concerns and hopes for the future of our community. In this Roots Radio episode, co-hosts Lisa Bonta Sumii and Richie Nuñez feature singer/songwriter, Fantastic Negrito.Fantastic Negrito takes you on a journey, portraying a narrative of triumph over adversity. His journey is a representation of a musician from Oakland who experienced the zenith of securing a million-dollar record contract, plummeted into the abyss after a life-threatening car accident that resulted in a coma, and is now witnessing a resurgence that has brought him from the alleys of Oakland to international fame. This man's life story is as compelling as his music because his experiences shape his sound. The music, inspired by a life full of trials, is an expression of black roots music, woven with elements of slide guitar, drums, and piano. The tunes convey an atmosphere of urgency, desperation, and tension.Negrito earned nationwide recognition when he clinched the first NPR Tiny Desk contest in 2015. He followed up this success with Grammy wins for all three of his albums: The Last Days of Oakland (2017), Please Don't Be Dead (2019), and Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? (2021). The most recent album includes collaborations with fellow Tiny Desk winner Tank (Tank and the Bangas) and the Bay Area icon E-40.Negrito's journey has been full of exciting turns in recent years. His independent record label, Storefront Records in West Oakland, launched his two newest projects. White Jesus Black Problems (2022) and Grandfather Courage (2023) explore the forbidden love story of his ancestors — a white Scottish indentured servant and an enslaved African man on a Virginia tobacco plantation in the 1750s. White Jesus Black Problems is accompanied by a 42-minute video available for viewing on YouTube.Additionally, Negrito has initiated The Storefront Market, an outdoor community market located at Storefront Records. The tenth iteration of this market recently partnered with Thrive City at The Chase Center, home to The Golden State Warriors in San Francisco. This partnership offered a platform for various Bay Area artists and vendors to showcase their work in the city.Lisa Bonta Sumii, LCSW, CSW | Athlete Mindset podcast host:Lisa is a psychotherapist and mental performance consultant to high-performing athletes at the youth, collegiate, Olympic-hopeful, and professional levels. Today's guest is NPR Tiny Desk, punk-folk musician, Sunny War.   She is an amazing, largely self-taught guitarist who played and developed her songwriting chops to literally survive homelessness and addiction as a teen in LA.  Like the other two released through Hen House Studios, her most recent LP, Simple Syrup is gathering amazing reviews throughout the world.  It's been called "delectable,"  "significant and fluent,"  and a "perfect album for  dreary morning." (Atthebarrier.com, Americanhighways.org, BCTV.org).  Forbes review of the album was equally positive and they call Sunny a "poet with a downcast gaze and virtuosic mastery of an instrument."  And believe us, this only scratches the surface.  Kites and Strings had a wonderful time interviewing Sunny who came off a European tour with George Benson in early July and and who is back on the road, criss-crossing North American with stops in Canada and on both coasts.  We catch up with her while she is in Portland and about a week before she makes her way through the Midwest and an August 26th date at the Wexler Group Trail Mix Acoustic Concert Series that Steve founded and directs.  We had some delays in getting Sunny War on and we wanted to air this episode before the August 26th date, so Steve is joined by a guest co-host in the person of Anastasia Robieson because Catherine is in Zimbabwe til the end of the month.  What is learned in this episode is that Sunny War, despite her lived life, is a joy.  As is clear in her songs, she is very honest and tells it like it is.  Her sharing about a mean uncle, frustrations with loosing youthful omnipotence, voting, corporations, and even feeling bored of her own music after long a career is surprisingly refreshing.  Thanks for joining us and we hope you enjoy this episode of Kites and Strings:Sunny's Website - http://www.sunnywar.com/Instagram - @sunnywarmusicTwitter - @sunnywarFacebook - @sunnywarmusicYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbkvZUD6w-3QWR4qjJQpP-wFor tickets to the Wexler Group Trail Mix Acoustic Concert Series featuring Sunny War:https://www.trailmixmusic.org/reservations-donations-merch Here's how you can find Kites and Strings out there in the interwebs.Kites and Strings Website: https://www.kitesandstrings.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kitesandstringspodcastTwitter:   @KitesandstringsInstagram:  @Kites_and_stringsemail: Kitesandstringspodcast@gmail.comKites and String's is produced and edited by Steve Ploum at Turning Stones Counseling, Inc.Our theme music is by Harrison Amer, and  this episode's music breaks featured tracks performed by Sunny War.  Our logo-design is by Cole Monroe at Blue Stag Creative. The Enthusiasm ProjectDeep dives exploring the world of what it means to be an independent creator.Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify We Should Talk About ThatWe get the conversation started on uncomfortable topics, b/c we SHOULD talk about that!Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ninet Tayeb over Zoom video.Rock ‘n' roll singer-songwriter Ninet Tayeb shows off her guitar-driven riffs and soaring vocals as a landscape for her captivating, reflective new single “Who Is Us.” The Israeli superstar songstress accompanies the track alongside a cinematic music video designed to tell the spiritual lyrical story of forgiveness, patience, presence, and bravery while facing life's unknowns.Los Angeles-based, Israel-native, alternative rock ‘n' roll musician Ninet Tayeb is more than a household name in her home country. From her winning “Israeli Idol” to starring in a long-running tv show about her life, the acclaimed singer, songwriter, and actress is arguably the biggest entertainment figure in the country. These days, her celebrity status knows no boundaries as she is showing America what real music is all about. In 2012 she took a pause from releasing music in Hebrew to make her debut album in English, “Sympathetic Nervous System.” It was produced by Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, Wolf Alice.) and recorded at Motor Museum Studios in Liverpool. The positive response to her music in English led to the release of “Paper Parachute” in 2017, which continues to receive glowing reviews and sparked more singles throughout 2018 and 2019.These songs reveal an artist with deep resilience, fierce determination, and disarming vulnerability. Along with an unflinching vision of her own path, those are traits that have allowed Ninet to emerge as the wild and free voice you hear on her records.Ninet is an artist who stands her ground and has made her way on her own terms. Her favorite way to connect to her audience is through her visceral, dynamic, and potentially messy live performances. Ninet's musicianship draws hints of inspiration from PJ Harvey, Chris Cornell, Foo Fighters, Portishead, Bob Dylan, and more. Her unyielding, inspiring energy and artistic brilliance has attracted interest from Rolling Stone, Billboard, NPR Tiny Desk, NYLON, and more. Ninet continues to shake up the American alt-rock scene with new music and more live performances on the way in 2022.We want to hear from you! PJ Morton is one of the hardest-working musicians on the scene today. Maybe you've seen him playing keys with Maroon 5, or fronting a full string section in his NPR “Tiny Desk” concert. Maybe you've immersed yourself in his Grammy-award winning albums. On all of these projects, Morton evinces his mastery for taking classic soul and R&B and updating it with modern sounds. Other musical legends have taken notice. On his latest release, Watch The Sun, Morton is joined by some of his own sources of inspiration, singer Stevie Wonder and rapper Nas. The three combined forces on Morton's track "Be Like Water," which recites an uplifting mantra over unsettled harmonies. The effect is hypnotizing. Morton spoke with Switched On Pop about what it was like to work with his heroes, and to share overlooked modern classics from Wonder's and Nas's catalogs. Learn more about your ad choices.
