"I know this isn't the time or the place, but, could you describe it to me?" A battalion of ghosts, perpetually reliving a moment of their troubled past alongside an acid lake, might not sound hauntingly beautiful. But to Safra, it means the world. Will their stolen moment of appreciation go unnoticed by their assailants? Probably not. Darrell was introduced to Yuri through Darrell's performance connection with the well-known traditional Bon Daiko drummer Isaku Kageyama. YURI KAGEYAMA is a poet, fiction writer, essayist, journalist, filmmaker and songwriter of bilingual and bicultural (Japanese and American) upbringing chats with Darrell Craig Harris on Music Matters. Yuri shares her thoughts on current daily life in Tokyo and shares her keen perspectives on how we all need to be personally responsible if we wish for a collective legacy that offers a positive outcome for our succeeding generations. Yuri talks about her award winning film - “NEWS FROM FUKUSHIMA” which has garnered great support as it's premiered in film festivals around the world. Yuri recites her moving poem about the plight of fukushima accompanied by Darrell on his bass guitar in a moving online live performance for us. This film is a a stark example of lessons we must learn from the under-reported catastrophic failure of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant which suffered major damage from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on March 11, 2011. The chain of events caused radiation releases from Units 1-4 forcing the evacuation of 83,000 residents from towns around the plant. The triple meltdown also caused concerns about contamination of food and water supplies, including the 2011 rice harvest, and also the health effects of radiation on workers at the plant. Scientists estimate that the accident released 18 quadrillion becquerels of caesium-137 into the Pacific Ocean, contaminating 150 square miles of the ocean floor. The current COVID pandemic has taken its toll on performing arts organizations and performing artists. In hopes to support these artists who are critical to our success, we have created TOCA To Go. A way to support local artists and TOCA. Do you know someone who is missing the excitement of a live performance? Got a special occasion that you want to celebrate or need a special gift you want to send to someone? Try TOCA TO GO! With just a few clicks, we will send a performer to your home, place of work or to their email inbox. Laura Ellis is one of the performers you can hire. A singer, actress, and recording artist, Laura Ellis is known for her beautiful voice, her vintage vocal styling, and her sparkling stage presence Laura performs across country in her touring productions. With her retro jazz flair, she has graced cabaret and concert stages including the famed Jazz Alley in Seattle, Feinstein’s at the Nikko in San Francisco, and the Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista, CA. Her broadcast credits include History Channel’s Route 66 and Modern Marvels documentaries, the HBO Carnivale series, and ABC’s Modern Family. In recent years, she has starred as the singing voice of the adventurous, Kat Knight, on the video game Contrast, by Compulsion Games, downloaded more than 1.5 million times. Her most recent recording, Broken, Lovely, was in consideration for a Best Vocal Jazz Grammy in 2016. Additional performers who are a part of TOCA To Go are: Janet Klein Janet is the very definition of an “old soul”. Growing up in a region of Southern California where the last vestiges of the “California Dream” were still barely in tact as strip malls proliferated, she linked historical images she’d seen of early turn-of-the century postcards with bungalows along palm lined streets, orange groves, grand Mission style hotels & onion-domed libraries- the way things were got into her blood, and today she’s the most refreshing anachronism to every materialize from the ether of the Prohibition. Klein doesn’t merely perform songs from “ lost America” –she actually lives them, and transports her audiences along the way. Klein considers herself a “musical archeologist and treasure hunter” digging up compositions by the likes of Wilton Crawley and A.P. Randolf and Robert Cloud, songs of the Victrola and lost Vitaphone films. She and her LA based band the Parlor Boys authentically resuscitate early jazz of the 1920s and 1930s with wild spirit, vigor and grand skill. The taiko drum is one of the endearing symbols of Japan and is one that stretches as far back as 14,000 BC. Traditionaly used in plays or to motivate troops in times of war, the modern taiko performance that we see today is only about 50 years old. On this show I talk to Isaku Kageyama who is two-time National Odaiko (large drum) Champion and is the youngest person to win such honors. He is also the first person to be accepted into a major American music university for playing taiko. I talk to Isaku about the history of taiko, how the Japanese system makes it difficult for younger players to get noticed and how more traditional Japanese music might be headed overseas. I also talk about my recent live interview with the guys at Bad Communication Podcast where I was the one answering questions and I touch on my recent attempts to keep my apartment warm by blocking out the cold Japanese winter air.
The players arrive at Volcano Island to confront Jacob and return home Twenty years ago, we played a game. We recorded that game and shared it over the airwaves of our high school radio station, WKEY AM 1360. People listened. So did other things. Twenty years later, we were invited to play a live reunion show for the hardcore fans. Little did we know, this time the game was real. For our first Dead Ghost production, we are diving into Rowan, Rook and Decard's fantasy horror game: DIE RPG. In DIE RPG you play a group of real-world, deeply-flawed adults who are transported into a fantasy realm via a predatory, sinister roleplaying game. There, they're transformed into Paragons and given strange and frightening powers. In this world, the players are confronted with their truest desires and deepest fears, and only they can decide when the game is over. Players will take on the role of the show's cast and supporters, creating Personas (the real-world person that each player—including the GM—plays) and Paragons (The six types of adventurers a Persona can be transformed into when they enter the world of DIE).
