Send us a textEpisode 173Takeji Asano, born in 1900 in Kyoto, Japan, was a masterful woodblock print artist whose works continue to captivate art enthusiasts worldwide. His journey into the world of art began at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts, from which he graduated in 1919. Eager to refine his skills, he furthered his studies at the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting, completing his education in 1923. During this period, Asano was mentored by Tsuchida Bakusen, a distinguished artist and printmaker, who profoundly influenced his artistic development. In 1929, Asano co-founded the Kyoto Creative Print Society (Kyoto Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai), marking his commitment to the sōsaku-hanga movement. This movement emphasized the artist's direct involvement in every stage of printmaking—designing, carving, and printing—allowing for greater personal expression. Asano's dedication to this philosophy set him apart from many of his contemporaries. The 1930s saw Asano contributing to the "Creative Prints of Twelve Months in New Kyoto" (Sosaku-hanga shin Kyoto junikagetsu), a series that celebrated the city's evolving landscape. Collaborating with fellow artists Benji Asada and Tomikichiro Tokuriki, Asano's prints from this series showcased his keen eye for detail and his ability to capture the essence of Kyoto's transformation. As the 1950s approached, Asano began designing landscape prints for the publisher Unsodo. These works, characterized by their serene beauty and meticulous craftsmanship, remain highly sought after by collectors. Original Unsodo prints bear the Japanese date in the margin, distinguishing them from modern reprints. Throughout his career, Asano exhibited a remarkable versatility. While he initially embraced the sōsaku-hanga approach, handling all aspects of print production himself, he later collaborated with carvers, printers, and publishers in the shin-hanga tradition. This adaptability not only broadened his artistic repertoire but also enriched the Japanese printmaking landscape. Asano's legacy is a testament to his unwavering passion and dedication to his craft. His prints, often depicting tranquil landscapes and traditional scenes, offer a window into Japan's rich cultural heritage. Today, his works are celebrated for their artistic merit and historical significance, solidifying Takeji Asano's place as a luminary in the world of Japanese woodblock printing.Support the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.com

When we last spoke with Doug Asano, he talked about how our notions of success were a little skewed in the early days and it took a little time—and the help of friends—to figure out what a good life really looks like. In this Roads Taken Revisited, Doug reflects—as his daughters fledge and leave him with an empty nest—on words of wisdom dispensed as he was making his own full leap into the world. Realizing how special his friendships were and taking the time to nurture them has been a lifelong process and one that continues to pay dividends. In this episode, find out from Doug how keeping up connections and tapping in can make even the quietest moments joyful…on Roads Taken with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestDoug Asano continues to serve as Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing at Roseburg Forest Products. He lives in an empty though still really fun nest in North Carolina with his wife, with room for his daughters to come in and out from time to time. For Doug's first appearance on Roads Taken, listen to our episode Redefining Success. Todd joins Maddy and Ryan for the series finale of the Wolverine anime, which might be worse than any previous episode because it's so unfulfilling. Sure, all the plot points get wrapped up; Yukio even confesses to killing Asano. But the ending is no less frustrating, since it involves Hideki blowing up the entire Dragon Palace while it's full of his own wedding guests (why???). Then, everybody else dies too, except for Logan and Kikyo, who make out in the post-credits scene. What even was this show? Yukio and Logan still haven't made it inside the Dragon Palace, even though we're all the way up to episode 10 of the Wolverine anime. This episode is called "Shingen," even though it's not about Shingen, and he doesn't even appear in the episode. That makes no sense, but neither does the episode, which features a lengthy fight scene with Vadhaka and the shocking, pointless death of one of the series' characters. At the end of this week's podcast, Maddy gets frustrated enough by the Wolverine anime that she decides to look up who killed Asano, as well as who is (and isn't) responsible for working on this anime. Skip synopsis @ 6:00   Email: WeAppreciateManga@Gmail.com   078: Downfall By Inio Asano Translation by Jocelyne Allen Lettering by Joanna Estep   Synopsis: Ten years after breaking off a relationship, the Mangaka Kaoru Fukuzawa experiences his series coming to an end. On the night of celebration his wife and fellow manga editor Nozomi Machida, messages him that their home is occupied by a drunken friend. She advises him to kill time elsewhere so Kaoru spends the night crying into the lap of a sex worker. He is disenfranchised with his work; he dislikes manga that sells well, even if it is his own, and is saddened that his wife spends more time with what he deems to be inferior mangaka than himself. Struggling to find meaning in creating manga that sells well. Soon he meets another sex worker, one with cat like eyes similar to his first love, ten years ago. She calls herself Chifuyu but when she is off the clock, he finds out that her name is really Yui. And Yui finds out that Kaoru is a Mangaka. On his way back home after spending the night as a legitimate couple he has a vision of being a family man, having a kid with Yui. But that night would end up being the last time He would see Yui. She doesn't respond to his messages and it's not long that he sees her listed as a sex worker again, trying to make some money. Kaoru is basically ghosted! Battling loneliness by messaging fans on social media and paying for women's time is when tensions reach boiling point. Nozomi's cat gets cancer, Kaoru's ex-assistant, the young lady Tomita, confronts kaoru on his behaviour and Kaoru forces himself on Nozomi. Months go by when the divorced Kaoru is at his new book signing, he meets a young woman called Akari who confesses her gratitude for his manga and admits that it saved her life. The story ends with the lonely Kaoru still haunted by memories of that cat eyed girl. Topics: How Kaoru's beliefs are formed? E.g. the superiority complex as a mangaka Inio Asano's depiction of women and his commendable nature of not sticking to the usual moe inspired glamour. Kaoru's sexuality, what is he doing wrong in his relationships? Depression and the love of Manga (How we relate to it, our thoughts and the idea of artist's block being a form of depression)   Other references: Golden Week is a set of Japanese public holidays that run through the first week of May. It is considered the peak of travel season for the Japanese. Hence why Yui spends it by visiting Italy. You maybe mistaken in believing that Kaoru is attending brothels but in reality, this is not possible. As with most places around the world, selling your body for sex is illegal. The legal loophole in Japan is that you can pay for an escort, which is a contract for the time spent with someone, sex is done consensually between two adults as a by-product of escort services. Japan does have the very common practice of “Love Hotels”. Rooms that are rented out for “rest” between one-to-three-hour time periods. These rooms are specially designed for lovers, one nights stands and sadly extra-marital affairs. Privacy is also a thing that Love Hotels sell, so you may never see the staff at such places or you may only see one member of staff through your time there. Supernova get all the press, but Nova and Micronova are still pretty powerful. White dwarf stars are normally pretty inactive, unless some hydrogen ends up kickstarting them again. Enough helium leeched from a nearby star can ignite the entire surface of a white dwarf. Nova may not destroy the star, but they can create immensely powerful explosions and particles. The right combination of White Dwarf and Red Giant can create powerful particles near the speed of light. Micronova sound small but they are still colossal and brief explosions on white dwarf stars. Not powerful enough to ignite the whole surface of a star, but definitely enough to destroy a planet, micronova are quite deadly. As reality unfolded, the two guys had problems in coordinating their schedules and being available at the same time. And as a result, you get this episode. But it's an extra-long episode, one that includes discussions of not two but three recent manga releases. They begin with the first volume in a the latest series from one of their favorites, Inio Asano. Dead Dead Demon's De De De De Destruction (VIZ Media) is an unusual work that, in many ways, reminds the guys of Goodnight Punpun they reviewed in March 2016, a title that they especially loved. And they appreciate this new work at least as much. This new book begins as a realistic narrative of Tokyo schoolgirls and their everyday interactions at school. Soon, though, the reader discover that this is not a normal environment, but one where the city is, literally, living under the shadow of a giant mysterious spaceship that visited them three years previously. Next they turn to a notable new release from Retrofit/Big Planet Comics, Baron Yoshimoto's The Troublemakers. Translated and edited by Ryan Holmberg, this is a collection of six short works of gekiga that vary in narrative approach, theme, and (to a lesser degree) style. All of these pieces were originally released between 1966 and 1974, and in a variety of publications. The volume ends with a magnificent essay, providing history and context, by the book's editor. This book marks the first translation of Yoshimoto's into English. The guys conclude with a completely different kind of book, Fujita's Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku, Vol. 1(Kodansha Comics). The title is a series of episodes -- think of a sitcom -- of a small group of young workers, all of whom are otaku (those with obsessive interests in very specific, especially fan-based, media and culture) and interact in everyday scenarios, at work and otherwise. The guys aren't near as enthusiastic about this work as they are with the others reviewed in this episode. However, Derek is more open to Wotakoithan Shea. In fact, Shea even wonders if the emphases in this series may not even be counterproductive, if not harmful, to consumer health.
