Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 22nd September. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new member of the Patreon family, and a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JACOB KUEHNE Todays is world car free day - so will you be riding your e-bike or e-scooter today? COLORADO EV INCENTIVES "Excel Energy's new roster of electric vehicle rebates are winning praise from environmental groups, with Colorado's dominant utility expanding incentives to include used vehicles, speeding up the all-important charging network and working with landlords to install apartment chargers." "Xcel will credit $50 a year on your bill if you agree to do most of your charging during off-peak times they have set aside. They say this allows them to plan demands on the power grid, and also allows you to use more renewable energy in the evening, instead of peak power that may be drawing on coal-fired power plants. If you need to charge at home outside your chosen time, you can override the system." “Used was a big win for us,” said Xcel electric vehicle program director Alisa Sobczak, who was showcasing Xcel's new incentives at a vehicle and charging station showcase set up for last weekend's Denver Auto Show.  “For instance, in the Denver Metro area, a family of four with household income under $85,000 qualifies,” for the rebates, Sobczak said. “We tried to make as many people eligible as possible, because we want everybody to have the opportunity to drive electric. So we've got $5,500 off a new EV purchase or lease, and $3,000 off of used." "The Xcel-offered rebates for new or used EV purchases and leases are income-qualified on a sliding scale, to target the greatest amount of help to those with the least resources for a big purchase. The price tag for the car can't go over $50,000, eliminating many models of Tesla or the high-end pickup trucks arriving this year." https://coloradosun.com/2021/09/21/new-xcel-electric-vehicle-charging-rebates CONSUMER REPORTS HATE TESLA'S YOKE "Testers at Consumer Reports recently got their hands on the Tesla Model S steering yoke, and first impressions aren't good. The publication, which purchases all of its test vehicles, recently received a new Model S equipped with the yoke which, in addition to its unusual shape, replaces conventional controls for the turn signals, windshield wipers, and horn with touch-sensitive buttons." writes Green Car Reports: "Over the course of a week, ten Consumer Reports testers reported numerous issues with the yolk. It slipped out of drivers' hands, doesn't allow for hand-over-hand shuffling when maneuvering in tight spaces, and drivers had trouble figuring out which button to press to activate the turn signals." Jake Fisher, senior director of Consumer Reports' Auto Test Center: "Swerving to avoid road debris or a stopped vehicle may be more difficult. I am concerned if I would be able to control the vehicle well in an emergency situation." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1133605_tesla-model-s-steering-yoke-is-a-pain-and-possible-safety-concern-says-consumer-reports 2022 BMW I3: ELECTRIC 3 SERIES SPIED "The 2022 BMW i3 has been caught by an amateur photographer in China. Images have been posted to website Sohu showing the first fully-electric 3 Series, with the new BMW expected to slot in below the i4 – but believed to instead share a similar powertrain to the iX3 SUV." says Whichcar.com.au: "Rumours suggest the new model will offer an entry-level variant initially – possibly called the i3 eDrive30 – with a single electric motor sending 210kW and 400Nm to the rear wheels. it's more likely the i3 shares the larger 84kWh battery pack with its i4 sibling, meaning the sedan should easily reach 600km of driving range on a single charge" https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/2022-bmw-i3-electric-3-series-spied ELECTRAMECCANICA TO BEGIN CUSTOMER DELIVERIES "ElectraMeccanica Vehicles will begin customer deliveries of its single-occupant, three-wheeled, electric vehicle, the SOLO.  The company will officially begin delivering keys to customers at a special launch event scheduled for 4 October in Los Angeles with a select group of early reservation holders along with the company's first fleet owners." reports Green Car Congress: "The SOLO is a purpose-built, three-wheeled, all-electric solution for the urban environment. Engineered for a single occupant.  The SOLO features front and rear crumple zones, side impact protection, roll bar, torque-limiting control, as well as power steering, power brakes, air conditioning and a Bluetooth entertainment system. It blends a modern look with safety features at an accessible price point of $18,500." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/09/electrameccanica-to-begin-customer-deliveries-of-three-wheeled-solo-ev.html DRIIVZ AND HUBJECT FOCUS ON PLUG & CHARGE Driivz, the leading end-to-end EV charging and smart energy management software platform, today announced a cooperation with Hubject, the world's largest eRoaming provider, to deliver a seamless Plug & Charge EV experience based on ISO 15118. The impetus for this collaboration came from Mer, a leading European EV charging company providing innovative and sustainable solutions, who recently chose Driivz to power its global EV charging infrastructure and will be the first to benefit from this collaboration. Hubject will serve as the Certificate Authority, providing private/public key pairs to secure and validate the digital communication underlying the instant authorization, payment and charging transaction. https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2021/09/21/2300235/0/en/Driivz-and-Hubject-Join-Forces-to-Deliver-Seamless-Plug-Charge-EV-Experience.html 5-SEAT TESLA MODEL Y APPROVED FOR AUSTRALIA "Tesla's Model Y is now approved as per the Road Vehicle Type Approvals. This is one step closer to the all-electric SUV hitting the roads in Australia. With SUVs representing the largest vehicle category for new car sales, the Model Y is expected to easily outsell the sedan equivalent (Model 3) that has proven to be Australia's favourite EV." says TechAU: "By way of battery capacity, the data is provided in Ah for each models. To get to the size of the pack we need to multiply this by the voltage." Model Y battery pack has a nominal voltage of around 350v.  Standard Range: 173Ah x 350 = 60.5kWh Long Range & Perf: 230Ah x 350 = 80.5kWh https://techau.com.au/tesla-model-y-approved-for-australia-sr-lr-and-perf-all-confirmed-with-5-seats/ TESLA EXPANDS VIRTUAL POWER PLANT "Tesla announced today that it is expanding its biggest virtual power plant in Australia to Victoria through its new “Tesla Energy Plan.”" says electrek: "Earlier this year, the company expanded the program by launching what it calls the “Tesla Energy Plan on the Tesla Virtual Power Plant,” which is basically a time of use energy plan specifically made for Powerwall owners in South Australia. Today, Tesla announced that it is expanding its Tesla Energy Plan and Tesla Virtual Power Plant to Victoria" Tesla: "Tesla's Virtual Power Plant allows you to maximise your energy savings through flexible Time of Use rates. The unique smarts of Tesla's world leading technology will monitor and manage your Powerwall, assessing usage patterns to help ensure your home is powered by the most efficient source. Reducing your energy bill and benefiting your community at the same time.” https://electrek.co/2021/09/21/tesla-expansion-biggest-virtual-power-plant-australia TESLA TO REVERSE SOLAR PRICE HIKE  "Tesla is trying to placate some solar customers who say they faced sudden price hikes earlier this year, according to new filings with the U.S. district court in San Jose, California. In a Thursday filing, customers' attorneys wrote, “Tesla informed counsel for Plaintiffs that Tesla had recently launched a program for customers who signed Solar Roof contracts before the April 2021 price changes to return those customers to their original pricing (if they were subject to a price increase in April 2021).”" writes CNBC.com: "Filings in three separate lawsuits alleged that Tesla solar customers had already signed contracts with Elon Musk's electric vehicle and renewable energy venture, and even prepared to have solar photovoltaics installed at their homes, when they were surprised by sudden price hikes that required additional payments to move ahead with their installations. The price hikes were not trivial. For example, plaintiff Matthew Amans' solar roof price shot up from around $72,000 per his original contract to around $146,000," https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/17/tesla-to-reverse-solar-price-hike-for-some-customers-legal-filing.html LARGE TAXI COMPANY GOES ELECTRIC "Today, we're announcing that our passenger car fleet will become fully electric by 2023, two years ahead of any other large PHV operator in London, and an investment of £160 million We begin that journey with a partnership with Volkswagen and the roll out of their ID.4s" say Addison Lee on a blog post: "– This will eventually mean 20 000 zero emissions journeys each day in London. In fact, our journey towards becoming fully electric has already started – following our purchase of leading black taxi platform ComCab earlier this year, we already have over 650 zero-emission taxis on our fleet. As well as helping the capital's environment, we know our new electric fleet and fund will be popular with drivers and business customers. In a recent survey 86% of drivers said they would be keen to shift to an electric vehicle this year and 82% of drivers considered improving the environment as the most significant benefit of shifting to EV. Show #852   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 29th July 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   BMW 3 SERIES ELECTRIC SPIED UNABLE TO HIDE ITS MISSING TAILPIPES "BMW’s continued push of electric vehicles isn’t slowing down. It’s all part of the company’s plan to launch 12 fully electric models over the next few years. It’s ambitious, led by the iX3 SUV the automaker revealed earlier this month. The plan includes an all-electric 3 Series, and new spy photos show development continues on the sedan." says Motor1.com: "If it looks longer than a regular 3 Series, that’s because it is. BMW is building the all-electric sedan on top of the model’s long-wheelbase version. That means this could be a China-only model as BMW only sells the LWB version in the Asian country. The extended platform likely allows the automaker to install bigger batteries, helping extend the range and power while being mindful of the packaging. If that’s the case, then the electric 3 Series could arrive in the US and Europe."   https://www.motor1.com/news/436256/bmw-3-series-electric-spied/   VW SAYS THAT THE PANDEMIC HAS MADE EVS "MORE INEVITABLE" "The full impact of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic remains to be seen, Volkswagen is already predicting that it will be good for electric cars. The pandemic has made electric cars "more inevitable," declared the headline for an in-house interview with Volkswagen Group of America senior VP of strategy Reinhard Fischer posted Friday." according to Green Car Reports: "While sharing services were heavily promoted before the pandemic, fear of virus transmission could cause more people to return to personal cars, Fischer said. In this scenario, electric cars have the added advantage of home charging, allowing drivers to avoid possible infection at gas stations, he said. The dramatic decrease in exhaust emissions during the early days of the pandemic, when most countries enforced strict stay-at-home orders, also showed the potential environmental benefit of electric cars. Municipalities will want to "hold on" to that cleaner air by enacting stricter emissions rules, Fischer said."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129001_vw-says-that-the-pandemic-has-made-evs-more-inevitable   FIRST GERMAN BUYERS OF ID.3 EV ARE YOUNG ‘TECHIE’ MALES "The Volkswagen ID.3 EV briefly became VW’s top-selling retail car in Germany last week when customers began placing orders at dealerships. The orders came more than a year after Volkswagen started taking deposits for its first purpose-built electric car. The company revealed who is buying the EV: mostly young “techie” men who had not previously purchased a VW." says Bradley at Electrek": "The company has received 37,000 pre-orders. About 85% of those deposit-holders have not bought a VW before the ID.3. That’s a dramatically different buyer than the loyal repeat buyers of the VW Golf hatchback. (About 85% of Golf buyers previously purchased a Golf.). The VW sales chief shared demographics about ID.3 buyers. They are predominantly: urban and suburban (not rural). Male self-described “techies”. Buying the ID.3 as a second car for a household"   Jürgen Stackmann, VW’s sales chief, told the Financial Times: "The ID.3 is igniting with a population that is about 10 years younger than the average profile [of our customers], which is around 58 in Europe."   https://electrek.co/2020/07/27/first-german-buyers-of-id-3-ev-are-young-techie-males-and-first-time-vw-owners/   TESLA MODEL Y REVIEW BY MARQUES BROWNLEE "A recent Tesla Model Y review from prolific YouTube tech reviewer Marques Brownlee has explained why the all-electric crossover is the company’s most important vehicle yet. In his segment with the Model Y, the MKBHD noted that the vehicle could very well tick most of the boxes for consumers looking into buying an EV. That being said, the Model Y still has its room for improvement. " picks up TEsmanian: "One thing that should be noted with the Model Y, particularly its Performance trim, is that its ride is quite firm thanks to its coil suspension. Despite this, the Model Y drives very well, and it behaves a lot like a sports car regardless of its size. And being a Tesla, the vehicle is also loaded to the brim with tech, from its Autopilot suite to its Full Self-Driving system.  The YouTube tech reviewer remarked that rear visibility is quite limited due to the crossover’s sloping roofline, and early production units such as the Model Y Performance given for the review still had build quality issues. "   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-model-y-review-mkbhd-video   CHINA NOW ACCOUNTS FOR NEARLY ONE-QUARTER OF TESLA REVENUE "Tesla  has been counting on China to maintain its sales momentum, and it seems to be on track with the plan. In the three months ended June 30, the automaker’s revenue in China climbed 102.9% year-over-year to $1.4 billion, according to its latest SEC filing. That means China now makes up 23.3% of Tesla’s total revenues of $6 billion in the quarter, compared to just about 11% in the same period a year before." says TechCrunch: "While shipment in China jumped in the second quarter, Tesla delivered 4.8% fewer vehicles overall in the period due to challenges prompted by COVID-19, including suspended production. The period marked the fourth straight quarter of profitability for the automaker."   https://techcrunch.com/2020/07/28/tesla-china-revenue/   ELON MUSK’S NEW FAVOURITE COLOUR FOR TESLA CARS REVEALED "A snap of what is believed to be Tesla CEO and co-founder Elon Musk’s own personal vehicle has revealed the first peek at his new favourite car colour: deep crimson. Tesla’s range of electric vehicles are currently available in only five colours: pearl white, black, dark silver metallic, blue metallic and red multi-coat." according to The Driven: "The image, which was used with permission by McCaffrey, shows a sublime dark reddish purple Model S that Musk confirmed is a “prototype of the colour”."   https://thedriven.io/2020/07/29/elon-musks-new-favourite-colour-for-tesla-cars-revealed/   TWO-SPEED GEARBOXES IN ELECTRIC SPORTS CARS ARE STUPID "Mate Rimac: the founder of Rimac Automobili and the man behind the modern electric supercar. Rimac talks about the long and tortuous path to its single-speed gearbox, beginning with a startling admission - he hated the two-speed double-clutch gearbox that was in his first electric supercar, the Concept_One." says Domenick at InsidEVs: "Specifically, he says it was immensely complex, heavy, and inefficient. That's everything you don't want in a high-performance vehicle powered by already-heavy batteries. It makes sense, then, that when starting the C-Two clean-sheet design, they opted for single speed gearboxes. However, when it first debuted, that's not what was in the car. As Rimac tells it, they were just a few months away from the vehicle's Geneva Motor Show reveal when Tesla surprised the world with its upcoming Roadster (which, we should mention, has a single-speed gearbox), boasting acceleration of 0-to-60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds. That was substantially quicker than the soon-to-be-unveiled C_Two. This development sent the team back to the drawing board and after, no doubt, many late-nights of work, it had revised the design and added a two-speed gearbox so as not to be outdone acceleration-wise. Still, Rimac wasn't satisfied. So, they redesigned the gearbox, motors, and inverter. After the changes, the motor's speed increased from 12,000 RPM to 17,700 RPM, while torque was juiced from 700 newton-meters (516 pound-feet) to 900 newton-meters (664 lb-ft). The change led to a lighting of the rear axle by a significant 60 kilograms (132.27 pounds)."   https://insideevs.com/features/436049/rimac-two-speed-gearbox-stupid-video/   ARAL TO SET UP 100+ CHARGING POINTS AT GAS STATIONS IN GERMANY "The mineral oil company Aral has announced that it intends to set up more than 100 fast-charging points at its German filling stations within the next twelve months. The expansion is to continue as the oil giant’s long-term planning envisages “several hundred locations”." says electrive: "In February, Aral completed its pilot project for high power charging with the opening of the fifth charging park. These charging points are operated independently, supply pure green electricity and have a charging capacity of up to 350 kW. Up to now, Aral has relied on charging points that each offer a CCS and CHAdeMO connection. This is exactly what is planned for the 100 new charging points."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/07/27/aral-to-set-up-100-charging-points-at-gas-stations-in-germany/     You can listen to all 851 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRIGHTSMITHGROUP.COM – FOR CLEANTECH TALENT (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NEW! Tuesday 13th March 2018.   INSIDE EVS WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG The original story was based on a strong, reliable source, but still when we first heard it reported plenty of people doubted it. However now Tesla has confirmed production did indeed shut down on the Model 3 line from February 20-24, in order to tweak the synchronisation of the robots. Tesla said: “Our Model 3 production plan includes periods of planned downtime in both Fremont and Gigafactory 1. These periods are used to improve automation and systematically address bottlenecks in order to increase production rates.” The battery pack assembley still seems to be causing headaches, the Panasonic cell production doesn’t seem to be the issue. Once that bottleneck is sorted I would expect to see a very rapid increase in production. By the end of June they want to be making 5,000 a week.   INVESTING IN EVs “DUMB” Elon Musk made a surprise appearance at SXSW Interactive Sunday panel in Austin with a few choice words of advice for any budding entrepreneurs. Elon said investing in rockets and electric vehicles was “the dumbest things to do”. Musk also said he hunts for "things that don’t seem to be working that are important for our life and for the future to be good. If you were to do a risk-adjusted rate of return estimate on various industry opportunities, I would put building rockets and cars pretty much at the bottom of the list." Musk said he "gave basically both SpaceX and Tesla from the beginning probably less than 10% of (being) likely to succeed.” In the early days, he wouldn’t even let friends invest in SpaceX because he figured they would lose their money. SpaceX is alive by the skin of its teeth. So is Tesla. If things had just gone a little bit the other way, both companies would be dead.” https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2018/03/12/elon-musk-sxsw-rockets-and-electric-cars-dumbest-possible-business-ventures/416670002   CLEANING UP EV MILES Today here in the UK the diesel lobby grasped on a single stat, that of pure BEVs having a bad month of sales, so say it was the start of the end for electric cars. Truth is electrified vehicles are up 15% because plug in hybrids took up the slack. Monthly figures go up and down. As commentators and newspapers latched onto an easy story they started peddling the myth that EVs are dirty because they charge from the grid – this was a coordinated attack on electric cars from those feeding stories to the media. So let’s take a look at that claim because I spent a lot of time on Twitter correcting people. Most of that was about the energy people use to charge their cars. The most common error reported today was to compare emission at the tailpipe vs the lifetime emissions of an EV based on grid carbon and the battery production. But as an EV podcast listener you probably know the nuance anyway – where the battery is made is probably China or Asia which can have dirtier grids. Most places are decarbonising quickly though so it’s a moving target. Many of those who compare the carbon emission of EVs charged on gas and coal take the worldwide average, but an EV in the UK doesn’t pop over to coal heavy Australia to charge. Finally a common trick is to take a small city car and compare it to an EV knows like a Tesla Model S, again skewing results. The truth is, and the general consensus, is that EVs are 50-60% cleaner than fossil fuel cars when charged from the grid. Layer in those who charge at home from solar and it’s a no brainer, but remember what films like An Inconvenient Truth point out, the aim of those fighting for diesel and denying climate change isn’t to win the truth, it’s to create just enough uncertainty in the wider public to make them question it. https://www.euractiv.com/section/electric-cars/opinion/are-electric-vehicles-cleaner-the-evidence-points-firmly-in-one-direction   HONDA URBAN EV DESIGNER Pistonheads.com talked to Iwaki-san, designer of the super cute Honda Urban EV which will enter production in 2019. Read the article I’ve linked to for more, but highlights are when he said: "With a battery EV, people typically expect that they're going to see something new, something unconventional. So it was difficult for us to kind of break through that mental barrier." "So far as the autonomous driving technologies are concerned, these technologies will not really have so much influence on interior design. However, the connectivity will have a larger influence because we are planning on using AI technology which means that the system can take over many of the operations. So the interior design will be much more simple, because we don't need all of those switches." "The importance of design holds for battery EVs, hybrids and combustion engined cars - it's always a priority. But the challenge was in the expectations people have of battery EVs: 'Ah, this is an EV, so it must look like this.' I wanted really to put it aside, so that's why we had a more rational approach to the battery EV design." https://www.pistonheads.com/news/features/hondas-urban-ev-designer-ph-meets/37690   BMW M BOSS SAYS IT’S A NOISY FUTURE With the newly announced BMW i4 joining the i3 and i8, plus the iX3 SUV coming, electrification is coming to the BMW fleet. The BMW M CEO Frank Van Meel told BMW Blog: “There have been so many changes regarding engine sound, with the change from naturally aspirated to turbocharged where you lose the air intake. Suddenly you had backfire and things like that. It just changed.” “And now these cars (EVs) have a completely different sound than current cars.” But like all new technologies, there are refinement levels involved that simply take some time. Take oil burners, for example. “Diesel cars first sounded like tractors and then they were improved and later you have Le Mans racing cars running on diesel that sounded pretty nice. Le Mans diesel later came into series production cars. So you can see there are always solutions.” “If you look at ‘Stars Wars’ pod races, that was completely artificial, and yet all the kids who watch the movie say that’s exactly how a pod should sound. That’s accepted. So with electric cars there will be sound also. I don’t know exactly what it will sound like, but we will find a solution as always. There will be artificial, or enhanced sounds. They will come to the mind as completely natural one day.” http://www.bmwblog.com/2018/03/12/bmw-m-boss-says-future-electric-vehicles-will-not-be-totally-silent/   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
