News Flash is brought to you by IntelStor. For market intelligence that generates revenue, visit www. IntelStor. com. Excel Energy plans to add 4. 2 gigawatts of clean energy in the upper Midwest by 2030. The plan includes 3200 megawatts of wind, 600 megawatts of battery storage, and 400 megawatts of solar. This could reduce regional emissions by up to 88 percent compared to 2005 levels. The company will extend operations at two nuclear plants and has cut one planned gas plant. The remaining gas plant will be hydrogen capable. Now, Xcel Energy notes that the wind power remains key, but solar deployment is lower than previously considered due to economic factors. Factors. Phil, this is an interesting approach by Xcel Energy that they're really focused on wind. I was at a recent conference where a lot of wind operators said that their focus over the next couple of years will be on solar for a lot of their operations. Philip Totaro: Well, and, and Xcel has been traditionally very solar focused but the fact that they would pivot to wind at this point themselves is reflective of the market dynamics for wind and price stabilization and in the merchant markets, as well as for utility power offtake agreements and the fact that they've Excel has committed to building more transmission in Minnesota North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and, and even out into Michigan, that's going to facilitate some of this capacity build out. So, the fact that they're kind of putting these plans in place and getting approval from the, the various state regulatory bodies to, to be able to build both the transmission and then, this wind solar and battery storage cap Capacity. That's very impressive that, they're, they're going to be able to push forward with it. It doesn't obviously uncork any more than what they've committed to thus far again, because of the, the transmission constraints, but at least they're, they're committing to, starting to fund that process of, building out more transmission and modern transmission that will allow for more renewables to to achieve penetration on their their portion of the grid. Allen Hall: Empire Energy Partners and the Herrick Corporation have formed a joint venture to enhance the US offshore wind supply chain capacity. They will explore manufacturing components for fixed and floating offshore wind projects, including monopiles, transition pieces, secondary steel and towers. The venture combines Herrick's steel production experience with Empire Energy's EPC capabilities. This is fascinating, Phil, because we really haven't seen this sort of partnership in the United States yet. Over in Europe, this happens quite a bit. Will we see more of this sort of de risking, but at least trying to move forward on offshore wind? Philip Totaro: I certainly hope so. And this is actually in direct response to them,

Recorded on August 16, 2024 https://youtu.be/1z8gu8-Iz0g In episode 114 of the PetroNerds podcast, Trisha Curtis, CEO of PetroNerds, is joined by Chris Brown, VP of Policy and Research at the Common Sense Institute, to discuss the recent report Trisha co-authored on Colorado's declining energy competitiveness. Energy is not just a sector of the economy; it is the sector upon which all businesses rely. Colorado, along with the rest of the US, has witnessed a dramatic escalation in electricity and natural gas prices, despite natural gas prices being near all-time lows, below $/mcf, for multiple months this year. In this podcast, Trisha and Chris discuss the main themes of this report, including the rising electricity and natural gas prices in Colorado, which are making the state less competitive from an energy cost standpoint. They also discuss where electricity is coming from in Colorado and the direct correlation between rising electricity costs and the increase of wind power into the grid. Finally, they talk about Colorado's CO2 emissions, which account for less than 0.3 percent of global emissions, and how Colorado shutting down coal-fired power plants is actually enabling higher CO2 emission growth out of China, increasing the cost of electricity and power generation in Colorado, decreasing grid reliability, and reducing the affordability of energy in the state. The data is damning and alarming, and folks in Colorado need to be reaching out to the PUC, Xcel, and their local representatives, demanding a halt to more wind and solar power being added to the grid at the expense of the Colorado consumer, taxpayer, and household. The report, along with all the detailed charts and analysis, can be found here: https://commonsenseinstituteco.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/CSI-Report-CO-Energy-Competitiveness.pdf. Recorded on March 15, 2024 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlDrxbUnaJg Episode 104 of the PetroNerds podcast is a PetroNerds special focussing on the proposed bill and ban on oil and gas permits in Colorado by 2030, an effective ban on all new oil and gas drilling. Trisha Curtis is joined by guest Chris Brown, VP of Policy and Research at the Common Sense Institute (CSI). Trisha just joined CSI as an Energy Fellow and helped contribute to a very recent and timely report authored by Chris on Senate Bill 24-159 in Colorado. Trisha and Chris talk about the bill, the impact to jobs in Colorado, the severe impact to tax revenue in Colorado, the detrimental impact to the economy, the knock on impacts that cannot easily be captured through modeling, the fact that it will increase not decrease CO2 emissions, and broader policies and costs being paid for by Coloradans and Americans from poor energy policies. While this podcast is focussed on this proposed bill to ban oil and gas drilling and completion permits in Colorado in the name of reducing CO2 emissions, the discussion goes beyond Colorado and is a lesson for all states. Oil production in California declines steadily, thousands of barrels per day each and every month, due to onerous regulations and anti oil and gas policies in California, directly contributing to rising energy costs, brown outs, higher costs of living, higher gasoline and diesel prices, higher electricity prices, and severe energy insecurity. This is the same route and path Colorado is on. Colorado citizens, businesses, business leaders, and those in and outside of the oil and gas industry need to appreciate that the war on oil and gas is a war on energy security and energy reliability and it is not reducing Colorado or global CO2 emissions. Xcel is proposing another rate hike on natural gas despite natural gas prices being well below $2/mcf. Consumers are not reaping the benefits of low domestic US energy prices in their electricity bills because utility companies are passing along the expensive cost of unreliable so called renewables to their consumers. Electricity bills have risen dramatically in the past few years, directly contributing to rising and sticky inflation and higher costs for consumers. Xcel is directly asking for the rate hike to pay for more expensive renewables. Folks need to push back and demand fairer prices and greater consumption of natural gas and reliable energy in the utility pool. It's time to get specific. In the power industry “long-duration energy storage” could mean anything from 4 to 10 to 100 hours of energy. But Form Energy's Mateo Jaramillo argues that batteries in the ballpark of 100 hours hit a sweet spot, and that sweet spot deserves its own term: multi-day storage. In the 15 minute to 12 hour range, lithium-ion batteries shine, effectively displacing natural gas peaker plants that run less than 5% of the year. But they don't displace higher-capacity generation. Nor do they meet the needs of the grid during significant weather events, like heat domes, Nor'easters and freak Texas winter storms that can last upwards of 75 hours. And for that, Mateo says we need multi-day storage.  Form Energy's iron-air batteries made headlines back in 2021 for promising to deliver tens of hours of storage at a low cost per kilowatt hour. (Energy Impact Partners, where Shayle is a partner, invests in Form Energy.) So what role could multi-day storage play on the grid? In this episode, Shayle talks to Mateo about real-world examples from Form's experience with utilities like Xcel and Georgia Power. They also cover topics like: The strengths and limitations of lithium-ion batteries on the grid today, and why Mateo thinks lithium-ion is here to stay. The competitive landscape for mulit-day storage, including iron-air, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and transmission. What role multi-day storage plays for utilities beyond balancing renewables, such as meeting load growth and resilience goals. Plus: Shayle's idea for bitcoin mining on a barge. Are drivers more aggressive in Denver than they used to be? Has it become the norm to speed on neighborhood streets? And most important: Why do people keep crashing their cars into stuff? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi dig into the bad driving problem, plus a new study that shows traffic downtown is back to pre-pandemic levels. Is there life downtown again? Then, we share listener voicemails about your favorite neighborhood rec centers and a Lowry resident wonders why we aren't showing more appreciation for local liquor stores.  Paul mentioned Xcel's new back-to-the-office policy. Bree mentioned friend of the show, reporter John Moore's post about someone crashing into a Lakeside Amusement park building. Paul and Bree also discussed “Welcome to My Office” a new addition to DIA's massive — and kinda weird — art collection.  What should we actually call DIA's new bronze business man?
