Today we dive into the big discounts making EVs more affordable than ever. We also talk about New Jersey's move to ban gasoline cars by 2035, as well as the options and soon-to-be real future of digital car keys.Amid increasing US production and surplus inventory, EVs are seeing significant discounts. However, this buyer's market might not last long.OEMs from Ford to Tesla have been cutting EV prices in response to a surplus in the US, with some discounts up to 31%, making them competitively priced against gas powered equivalentsFor instance, the BMW iX, with advanced features like a touch-responsive sunroof and gesture-controlled stereo, is available at a 17% discount for $80,195. For more budget-friendly options, Nissan's Ariya is listed at an 18% discount for $36,690, while the Hyundai Kona Electric is offered in Atlanta at a substantial 31% discount, priced at $29,990.Elaine Buckberg, a former economist at General Motors and a senior fellow at Harvard University says,“The stories being written that it's falling apart are just dead wrong. The aggressive pricing is likely reflective of an inventory imbalance that will regulate as EV sales are up 2.5 times in the last 12 months2035 might just be the new 2030. Joining states like California, New York, and Colorado, New Jersey  is doing what it can to speed up its EV Transition and has announced a ban on manufacturer sales of new gasoline vehicles by 2035.New Jersey adopts California's Advanced Clean Cars II regulation, aiming for 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035.The rule mandates that 43% of cars produced by 2027 be zero-emission, increasing to 68% by 2030.This regulatory shift doesn't impose direct obligations on consumers or dealers, but significantly influences manufacturer production. The New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers criticizes the move, citing concerns over consumer choice and affordability arguing the mandate could significantly disrupt the market, impacting both consumers and car dealersImagine a world where losing your car keys doesn't matter? Some of the brightest minds are doing just that as digital keys are steadily making their way to center stage. While adoption is growing, questions around technology choices, security, and compatibility remain.Daniel Knobloch, vice president and a board member at Car Connectivity Consortium who also worked for over seven years as a wireless systems architect at BMW talks about the emerging tech in an interview on The VergeThere are a variety of standards in play that each have pros, cons, and a chance of making it into your next new vehicleNFC: Near-Field Communication, UWB: Ultra-Wideband and Bluetooth.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

We discuss how this model, built in Tuscaloosa, Ala., compares to the ultra-luxury EQS SUV, the incredible amount of safety features available on this model, and why even the pared-down infotainment screen (compared to the MBUX Hyperscreen) might still be a deal-breaker. EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

It's EV News Briefly for Thursday 9th March. I'll be back as usual at 5pm UK time, that's Midday Eastern, for the full podcast.  Patreon supporters get the episodes as soon as they're ready AND ad free. You can be like them by clicking here. The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV comes with three powertrain options, priced between $79,050 and $90,650, and will be built in Alabama to compete with the BMW iX and Audi E-Tron. It offers features like 10-degree rear-axle steering, fast charging, and adjustable damping, with an optional air suspension. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 120,000 Tesla Model Y vehicles due to reports of steering wheels falling off while driving. Two incidents have been reported due to missing retaining bolts, and a recall could follow pending the investigation's outcome. Nissan is recalling some 2023 Nissan Ariya electric SUVs due to the possibility of the steering wheel detaching. The recall covers 1,063 vehicles, and owners are encouraged to check for loose steering wheels and contact a dealership for a replacement. Volkswagen may prefer to build its first battery cell factory in North America, with potential incentives of up to €10 billion under the US Inflation Reduction Act. The company is awaiting the EU's reaction before deciding to build a plant in Eastern Europe, and other European battery manufacturers may also look to the US for subsidies. The long-wheelbase version of the Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric van will debut in June in the US for the 2024 model year. It offers seven seats as standard, a larger battery pack than other versions, and optional dual-motor all-wheel drive. Pricing and range estimates will be available upon its debut. VinFast's founder established a rental service for electric cars and scooters in Vietnam, offering a fleet of 10,000 electric cars and 100,000 electric scooters, as well as its own all-electric taxi service in Hanoi. The cars will be VinFast vehicles, and the company seeks to promote EVs by offering test drives and other opportunities. Bafang, an electric bicycle giant, has formed a new brand called T&D to expand its influence into the electric motorcycle industry. It has unveiled its first drivetrains, the FE01 Off-Road Drive System and the LI01 City Commuting Drive System, with up to 60 kW of peak power and 125 Nm of torque, aiming for more affordable electric motorcycles. Chalmers University researchers have developed an induction technology capable of charging at 500 kW with nearly 100% efficiency, nearing commercialization. It is made possible with high-power semiconductors, such as silicon carbide components, and works with four times higher frequencies than previous wireless charging systems. House Republicans have introduced legislation to restrict California's ability to ban gas-powered cars, protecting consumer choice and preventing higher costs. The 2035 rule would affect over 40% of total US car purchases, and the legislation aims to prevent California from implementing stricter emissions standards than the federal government. Lightship, a new company founded by two Tesla veterans, has created an electric-assisted camping trailer called the L1 that can be towed without affecting an EV's range. It has an 80 kWh battery and up to 3 kW of solar power, priced at $125,000, with production starting in late 2024. New York City is banning the sale of electric bicycles, scooters, and other mobility devices that are not UL-certified, reducing the risk of lithium-ion battery fires. The new law requires devices to be certified to the UL 2849 standard, and while lithium-ion battery fires are rare, they can result in significant property damage and fatalities. Electric vehicle transmissions have fewer components and a simpler powertrain than those used in standard combustion engine vehicles. There are different types of EV transmissions, including single-speed, multi-speed, and continuously variable options. Bosch and Inmotive have developed advanced transmission technologies that offer significant advantages over single-speed transmissions, such as energy savings and improved range and performance. Wyclef Jean Launches the ‘Lightest Electric Supercar' That Can Go 0 to 60 in 2.3 Sec - Haitian rapper and musician, Wyclef Jean, has launched the Attucks Apex APO electric supercar, the lightest-ever electric supercar on the market, with an ultralow weight of 1200 kg, a top speed of 190 mph, and acceleration from 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds. The APO electric supercar will start at around $350,000 and is set for its official release next year.

Ford has just announced details of the Tremor package for its popular Ford Maverick pickup truck, and it promises to be an interesting new entry in the ever-growing list of new off-roaders. The new Tremor equipment is available on XLT and Lariat series trucks. It includes a 1-inch lift for greater ground clearance, exclusive Trail Control off-road “cruise control,” unique off-road-oriented front and rear suspension, advanced all-wheel drive with four-wheel-drive lock, and a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Of course, there are appearance items as well — blacked-out Ford logos, headlamps and taillamps, “Tremor Orange “tow hooks, an updated fender vent, and a new grille. We'll also talk about two other Ford trucks, the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Ford F-150 Lightning. In this episode, we'll talk more about the Ford Maverick Tremor and also discuss the new BMW i4 eDrive35, the latest addition to the BMW i4 lineup. With a starting price of $51,400, the new i4 eDrive35 is driven by the same Gen5 eDrive powertrain technology found in the BMW iX and the other i4 models. The single “electrically-excited” synchronous motor sends 281 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels, resulting in an estimated 0-60 mph time of just 5.8 seconds. Our special guest this week is Cayley Hill. She is manager of the EV Ecosystem at General Motors, and she will tell us about a fascinating new service General Motors is offering called EV Live. If you have questions about EVs that's a place to get answers. In the road test segment, Co-Host Chris Teague and Host Jack Nerad will look at two very exciting variants of the bestselling vehicle in America, the 2022 Ford F-150 full-size pickup. Chris Teague will give us his report on his weeklong experience driving the 2022 Ford F-150 Raptor. And Jack Nerad will offer his impressions after driving the battery-electric 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning for a week. He calls it the first EV that didn't prompt constant worry about range restraints. Both vehicles are among the most exciting on the market. Ford has made the Lightning the object of an unprecedented launch as it moves to head off other battery-electric entries that could challenge its longtime status as king of the full-size pickup truck hill. And when it comes to corporate profits, that hill is actually much more like a mountain.

This week on the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, the duo jump into action to discuss the 2023 BMW iX M60, a combination of BMW's M, i and X brands that looks... frumpy. Besides the exterior design, the M60 sports a ton of power and performance, especially in a straight line. But everyone knows that a BMW M product has to sound cool too, so be sure to hear Sami explain how the iX M60 achieves its signature soundtrack. Then Benjamin dives in to talk about the 2022 Acura MDX Type S, which leverages Acura's once sexy sport trim for a new (nefarious?) purpose. With a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, is the MDX Type S hot enough to be worthy of that name? Where else does its performance shine? Will Benjamin end up begging listeners to help him understand where Acura is going with this Type S branding? Finally, Benjamin shares an update on his Datsun woes, and how he hopes to resolve his issues to get back on the track again. Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe and review!

But of those interested in the Lyriq, 70% are new to Cadillac and 68% are of the younger generation, bringing down the average age of the brand's customer. - "With the launch of the 2023 Lyriq Debut Edition, we offered a special price for our first EV customers of $59,990," Tatulli said. "As we move into the regular life cycle of the vehicle, we've adjusted pricing to reflect the content of the vehicle." - BMW iX is $85,000, according to Kelley Blue Book. Show #1407 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Thursday 17th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. FORD F-150 LIGHTNING EPA RANGE NUMBERS EMERGE: UP TO 320 MILES - The long-awaited EPA range and efficiency numbers for the upcoming Ford F-150 Lightning all-electric pickup finally emerged, but not yet on the EPA's website, but via Monroney Stickers, shared on f150gen14.com forum. - According to four Monroney Stickers, shown for Pro (SR and ER), Lariat (ER) and Platinum (ER) versions, Ford achieved the 230-mile target for the SR and beat the ER target by 20 miles, achieving 320 miles. - Pro 18"(SR): 230 miles (370 km)(ER - fleets): 320 miles (515 km) - Lariat 20"(SR): N/A (potentially the same as Pro SR)(ER): 320 miles (515 km) - Platinum 22"(ER): 300 miles (483 km) - An interesting thing is that the ER battery versions (aside from Platinum) get 320 miles, compared to 314 miles of Rivian R1T. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/574208/ford-f150-lightning-epa-range/ FORD CEO FARLEY SAYS AUTOMAKER SOLD OUT OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES - As soon as CEO Jim Farley said the words, they hit the Twittersphere: "We are sold out for a couple years now," he said. On stage for a CERAWeek energy conference discussion streamed live March 10 from Texas - The moderator asked: How are things going with the Mustang Mach-E? - "It's totally sold out. We're just completely overwhelmed. I mean, we have the chip supply thing, that makes it worse. But we're completely oversubscribed," he said. "Actually, in all of our electric vehicles, we are sold out for a couple years now. So we're very fortunate that we made that choice to go into those passion products." - "We were lucky. We got to watch from a distance what happened at Tesla and the first generation of leaders like BMW and GM. They went first, and Nissan, and Tesla won and the generic products didn't," Farley said. - "What we learned from that as a management team, which was actually not popular in the company, was that early adopters of zero emission wanted the good stuff," he said. "They don't want generic homogeneous small cars that are unremarkable. They want great vehicles. They want aspirational vehicles ... And so we said, 'let's electrify the icons.' " - The automaker has been so overwhelmed by orders for its award-winning Mach-E that it has had to stop taking orders for the 2022 model because many are sold out.Not all versions, but many. - When the 2023 Mach-E order bank opens, deliveries are scheduled to begin as soon as late 2022. While Ford expects 2022 Mach-Es to be delivered to customers before the new model year begins shipping, global supply chain and semiconductor chip issues could continue to disrupt the delivery schedules - In January, Ford announced it would nearly double production capacity to 150,000 Lightning pickups per year at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn to meet "soaring customer demand," - Within 24 months, Ford will have the global capacity to produce 600,000 battery electric vehicles annually with plans to move toward annual production of more than 2 million EVs by 2026." - Van Conway, president of the Young Conway Group, a turnaround consultancy for businesses based in Detroit, said executives routinely get consumers excited when products are so popular they're in limited supply."Ferrari sells out every year, too," Conway told the Free Press. "When you say you're sold out, you actually get people more interested in getting one. Maybe they're not sold out tomorrow, but they are sold out today." There's a view from every angle when the driver pulls the vehicle off the street to turn around. - All of the production panels appear to be on the body, so the covering is the only thing hiding the vehicle's design. - In front, the Spectre has split headlights that include LED strips on the upper section. Because EVs don't need the same airflow as combustion-powered vehicles, it's not clear whether the large grille is actually functional. - There are vertically oriented taillights on each corner of the rear. - A recent rumour suggests it would share components with the BMW iX M60 electric crossover. If this is accurate, then a coupe could make as much as 610 bhp - In the iX M60, this setup gets the crossover to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometres per hour) in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (250 kph). Its 111.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack gives the BMW a WLTP-estimated range of 352 miles (566 kilometres). Show #1406 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Wednesday 16th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. TESLA HALTS WORK AT SHANGHAI FACTORY FOR TWO DAYS AMID CHINA COVID CURBS - Tesla (TSLA.O) is suspending production at its Shanghai factory for two days, according to a notice sent internally and to suppliers, as China tightens COVID restrictions to curb the country's latest outbreak. - The Shanghai factory runs around the clock, and suppliers and Tesla staff were told on Wednesday in the notice, reviewed by Reuters, that production would be suspended for Wednesday and Thursday. - Many cities across China, including Shanghai, have been rolling out strict movement controls to stem the country's largest COVID-19 outbreak in two years. The measures have also caused factory shutdowns in parts of the country, putting pressure on supply chains. Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/exclusive-tesla-stops-work-shanghai-factory-two-days-amid-china-covid-curbs-2022-03-16/ - "We are actively cooperating with the government's requirements for nucleic acid testing and other epidemic prevention requirements, and at the same time are doing our best to ensure production, overcoming difficulties together," the company said in a statement sent to Reuters. Teslarati confirmed this by recovering several documents from the EPA, which confirmed that Tesla had applied for certification of the new Model Y variant on February 2, receiving a Certificate of Conformity from the EPA on February 16 - the new Model Y's range rating had Tesla enthusiasts stumped at whether the vehicle would equip the 4680 cells that Tesla confirmed would be in Austin-made vehicles. The low range rating seemed to indicate that Tesla could be rolling out a Standard Range vehicle using LFP cells - While the range ratings and batteries used in the Model Y are not present in the internal reference, green said the model name, Standard Range+, and location of manufacture, Gigafactory Texas, are included. Often, these people are diehard fans, keen to promote the company's prowess and show off its new driver assist features. Sometimes, though, they overshare — posting videos that show exactly when and how Tesla's software gets it wrong. - John Bernal, a former Tesla employee who reviewed the company's FSD Beta software on his YouTube channel AI Addict says he was fired by the company last month after posting a video that showed his Tesla hitting a bollard. - Bernal says that prior to his dismissal he was told verbally by his managers that he “broke Tesla policy” and that his YouTube channel was a “conflict of interest” (though his written separation notice did not specify a reason for his dismissal). Bernal said he'd previously been approached by managers after posting a video in March 2021 that showed a number of close calls with pedestrians and cyclists while using the FSD beta software. - A number of FSD Beta testers post reviews of the company's software on YouTube, and Bernal says he intends to maintain his channel (though he now needs to borrow friends' cars to test FSD Beta). As Bernal told CNBC: “I still care about Tesla, vehicle safety and finding and fixing bugs.” Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2022/3/16/22980580/tesla-fired-employee-john-bernal-ai-addict-youtube-full-self-driving-beta-reviews 2022 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR'S THREE FINALISTS ARE ALL ELECTRIC CROSSOVERS - Crossovers of all shapes and sizes are in high demand right now and it seems the very best ones are electric. The three finalists for the World Car of the year competition have been announced and they're all sporty electric high riders - Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. - The latter has already been crowned (European) Car of the Year for 2022, so its presence among the top three is not surprising. Hyundai Ioniq 5 is equally talented and geared more towards comfort, but its polarizing design is not as unanimously appreciated as the Kia's. - The winners in all six categories will be announced live at the 2022 New York Auto Show on April 13. Out on the open road, electric energy consumption is an impressive 3.68 miles/kWh - 1.6-litre T-GDi engine that works in tandem with a 66.9kW permanent magnet traction electric motor and a 13.8kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The high-voltage battery sits centrally between the two axles under the body of the SUV - t on-board charger (OBC) system is rated at 7.2kW, making it the fastest-charging Kia PHEV to-date. The battery can complete a full charge in just 1hr 45m. Initially, this refers primarily to the growing range of electric vehicle models, but electric sales are expected to increase further “rapidly”. - As the Group announced in the context of its business figures for 2021, it will already have 15 fully electric models in production this year, covering around 90 per cent of the current segments. However, BMW also included pre-production vehicles in the figure. Presumably, vehicles such as the i4 eDrive 40 and i4 M50 will also count as two models. - The big technology shift is scheduled for 2025 with the ‘New Class' debut, but the New Class will play only a minor role in cumulative sales by the end of 2025. “With the BMW iX and BMW i4, we have launched what are probably the best e-cars of the present day – at least the test results and the high demand from our customers speak for themselves,” says BMW CEO Oliver Zipse. “And with the BMW i7, we're going one better this year.” - BMW is pinning high hopes on the New Class, on which models from the size of a 1 Series to the 7 Series are to be based in perspective as a “cluster architecture” – and “uncompromisingly” designed for electric drives. A “completely new electric drive” reduces consumption and increases range. BMW does not provide details on this; the current fifth-generation involves current-excited synchronous motors. - If the new, more optimistic scenario materializes, annual sales of fully electric vehicles by the BMW Group could exceed 1.5 million units as early as 2030. - Just a few days ago, BMW called for political support in expanding the hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. - Instead of a 700-bar refuelling station every 150 kilometres by 2027, BMW called for intervals to be reduced to 100 kilometres to support hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
