fWotD Episode 2927: Tesla Model S Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 10 May 2025, is Tesla Model S.The Tesla Model S is a battery-electric, four-door full-size car produced by the American automaker Tesla since 2012. The automaker's second vehicle and longest-produced model, critics have called the Model S one of the most significant and influential electric cars in the industry. It is the recipient of numerous accolades, including the Motor Trend Car of the Year Award in 2013.Tesla started developing the Model S around 2007 under the codename WhiteStar. Initially, Henrik Fisker was appointed as the lead designer for the WhiteStar project; after a dispute with Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, Fisker was replaced by Franz von Holzhausen. By 2008, von Holzhausen had designed what would become the production Model S's exterior. Tesla unveiled a prototype of the vehicle in March 2009 in Hawthorne, California. In 2010, Tesla acquired a facility in Fremont, California, to produce the Model S, which was previously owned by General Motors and Toyota. Series manufacture of the car officially began at what is now known as the Tesla Fremont Factory in June 2012. Tesla carried out the final assembly for European markets at its facilities in Tilburg, the Netherlands, between 2013 and 2021. All versions of the Model S come equipped with a single-speed transmission. The car initially used an alternating current induction motor, which was replaced by a permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor in 2019. Constructed mostly of aluminum, the Model S shares 30 percent of its components with the Model X—a crossover SUV that was introduced in 2015. The Model S has undergone several updates during its production, the most prominent ones occurring in 2016 and 2021. These updates have usually included modifications to the motor, such as changes to power or torque, revised exterior elements, and refreshed interior features. One such change included the introduction of Tesla Autopilot—a partial vehicle automation advanced driver-assistance system—which was released in 2015. To charge the Model S, Tesla operates a network of fast-charging stations. In 2015, the Model S was the world's best-selling plug-in electric vehicle. In 2012, it was included on Time's list of the Best Inventions of the Year, and the magazine later included it on its list of the 10 Best Gadgets of the 2010s in 2019. In 2014, The Daily Telegraph described the Model S as a "car that changed the world". Road & Track argued that, with the introduction of the Model S Plaid—the high-performance version of the vehicle—and features such as the yoke steering wheel, Tesla managed to turn the Model S into "perhaps one of the worst [cars in the world]." Some companies have customized the Model S into limited-edition body styles, including a hearse and a shooting brake. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Saturday, 10 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Tesla Model S on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kimberly.

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1003: Dealers and analysts react to President Trump's tariff order, as the administration considers a tax deduction for auto loan interest paid. Plus, Fisker Oceans have found new life as a rideshare fleet in NYC.Show Notes with links:Trump's sweeping tariff order is shaking the auto world. The new 25% levy hits nearly all foreign-built vehicles and key components.Analysts predict $4K–$10K price hikes, and Cox Automotive warns that 30% of U.S. vehicle production could be disrupted within a week. GM stock fell 9%, hit hardest due to its reliance on Mexico and South Korea, Ford and Stellantis were down around 2%Ferrari responded by is raising prices by 10%, up to $350K on some models. Even Tesla isn't safe—Elon called the impact “significant” due to global parts sourcing.Michael Wood, GM of JLR Virginia Beach on LinkedIn “This will inadvertently heavily impact a brand that never had jobs here in the first place. The outcome could be disastrous for those working at these stores. Volumes go down, staffs are reduced and displaced.”Rob Malanowski, Internet Director at Ancira Nissan said on LinkedIn “If you're a car shopper, you will get to choose between: paying more for a non-US built vehicle, paying more for a US built vehicle, deciding you don't really need a new car right now. Bet we'll see a ton of people in group 3.”President Trump has proposed a tax deduction for interest paid on auto loans—but only for vehicles made in America. The idea, announced alongside 25% tariffs on imported vehicles, has drawn mixed reactions from dealers and analysts alike.Dealers are split—some say it could help consumers, while others doubt its feasibility.Analysts say the deduction could save buyers around $20 a month, but tariffs could add $60–$90 to payments.Used car prices could rise 9-12% due to increased demand for domestic models. The White House and Speaker Johnson's office have yet to confirm details, including whether the deduction applies to standard tax filers.“I think it's Trump's way of trying to regulate interest rates,” said Ford dealer Nick Anderson, calling it a “pipe dream.”Trump argues the policy will “pay for itself” by increasing U.S. auto production. What happens to thousands of Fisker Oceans after the company goes bankrupt? In New York City, they're hitting the streets as Uber and Lyft rides, thanks to a fleet operator with a vision and a Bronx repair shop keeping them roadworthy.American Lease bought 3,000 Fisker Ocean EVs for $42.5M, renting them to rideshare drivers.New York City mandates all Uber & Lyft rides be EV or wheelchair-accessible by 2030.BHP Service Center in the Bronx is now the go-to repair shop for these orphaned EVsShop owner Ronen (“Roni”) is already stockpiling parts, purchasing wrecked vehicles and even making molds for body panels.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

The Unnamed Automotive Podcast gets some second opinions this week. Today's show starts with Sami's review of the 2025 Toyota Crown, a car than Benjamin drove a few years ago. However, Sami's experience with the Crown has been changed by recent tests of the Camry and Accord, both of which were spacious, well equipped, efficient and responsive. Does the more expensive Crown have anything to offer that they don't? Then Benjamin finally gets his chance to drive the 2025 Honda Pilot TrailSport. A three-row crossover with some off-roading capabilities, the Pilot feels like it should be more interesting to drive and live with than other three-rows like the Highlander, Telluride and Palisade, but Benjamin points out that there are a few things that stop it from being a standout. Finally, the show closes up on checkup on Fisker, and an interesting law that means that Chase is sending Fisker Ocean buyers to Rivian dealerships. Thanks for listening!

Shoot us a Text.On this Thursday, we're covering how EV/hydrogen truck maker Nikola is filing for bankruptcy, how West Herr Auto Group gifted Slick Rick from the Buffalo Bills mailroom a car, and how kids meals are becoming something everyone orders.Electric truck startup Nikola, once a Wall Street darling valued higher than Ford, has filed for bankruptcy, joining other EV-makers like Fisker, Lordstown Motors and Electric Last Mile Solutions.Founded in 2015, Nikola promised a hydrogen-fueled revolution for trucking, securing billions in investments from GM, Bosch, and others. In 2020, short-seller Hindenburg Research accused Nikola of faking its truck technology, revealing a promotional video showing a truck rolling downhill with no powertrain.Founder Trevor Milton resigned amid fraud allegations and was later convicted in 2022, receiving a four-year prison sentence.Despite shifting focus to hydrogen fuel cell trucks, Nikola produced only 235 vehicles, amidst supply chain issues, rising costs, and an underdeveloped hydrogen fueling network.CEO Steve Girsky blamed economic conditions, stating, “Our very best efforts have not been enough to overcome these significant challenges.”When quarterback Josh Allen gave his MVP acceptance speech last week, he made sure to shout out someone who rarely gets the spotlight—Roderick “Slick Rick” Morrow, a beloved mailroom employee at One Bills Drive. After Allen's speech, Buffalo fans quickly fell in love with Slick Rick. One detail caught everyone's attention: despite working for the Bills for over a decade, Rick had been taking the bus to work every day.West Herr Automotive Group knew they couldn't just stand by on the sidelines, and on Valentine's Day, they surprised Slick Rick with a Chevy Traverse—his very own set of wheels after years of relying on public transportation.“It feels like I'm living the dream, and I am!” Rick said, soaking in all the love from the Buffalo community. As fast-food prices continue to skyrocket, some savvy consumers have found a way to save money—by ordering kids' meals. The trend has surged in popularity, with many adults opting for smaller portions at lower prices, sometimes even enjoying the bonus of a toy.Data from Circana shows a 28% increase in adults ordering kids' meals in 2024 compared to 2019.Fast-food prices have surged by 39%-100% over the past decade, outpacing inflation (31%), with McDonald's, Popeyes, and Taco Bell leading the way.Social media influencers, such as TikTok's “kids' meal connoisseur” Ashley Garrett, have fueled the trend by reviewing and rating kids' meals.Restaurant investor Dan Rowe suggests the issue isn't adults ordering kids' meals but rather, “If people are ordering off of your kids' menu, you have other issues.”The rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which reduce appetite, could also be contributing to the demand for smaller portion sizes.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
This Day in Legal History: Executive Order 9066On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, authorizing the forced relocation and internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Issued in the wake of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, the order empowered the military to designate "exclusion zones" from which individuals could be removed. Although the order did not explicitly mention Japanese Americans, it led to the incarceration of over 120,000 people of Japanese descent, two-thirds of whom were U.S. citizens. Families were uprooted from their homes and businesses, sent to remote camps under harsh conditions, and held without due process. The Supreme Court upheld the internment in Korematsu v. United States (1944), ruling that national security concerns justified the action. Decades later, the decision was widely condemned, and in 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act, formally apologizing and granting reparations to surviving internees. The internment remains a stark example of how fear and prejudice can lead to grave violations of constitutional rights. The Department of Government Efficiency (DGE), spearheaded by Elon Musk, claims to have saved $55 billion in federal spending, but publicly available data only supports about $8.6 billion in verified savings. A major accounting error inflated a single contract cancellation from $8 million to $8 billion, significantly distorting the numbers. Despite promising "maximum transparency," DGE operates outside traditional oversight, raising concerns about its accountability. Musk, whose companies receive billions in federal contracts, is supposedly self-policing conflicts of interest. Meanwhile, a federal judge has allowed DGE to continue slashing jobs and contracts, handing Trump a legal win. The administration touts these efforts as transformative, with Trump and Musk claiming they'll eventually cut $1 trillion in waste. However, with major entitlement programs off-limits and nearly half of discretionary spending tied to defense, the math is fuzzy at best. Who knew the efficiency agency run by the guy who wildly guessed about Twitter bots might struggle with basic accounting?DOGE Says It's Saved $55 Billion, Itemized Data Show Far LessBradley Weinsheimer, the Justice Department's top ethics official, resigned after being reassigned by Trump administration officials to a new working group on sanctuary cities. A 34-year DOJ veteran, Weinsheimer opted for deferred resignation rather than accept the move, joining a wave of career officials who have left amid concerns over the politicization of the department. His ethics duties were transferred to two political appointees—one of whom helped defend Trump in his New York hush-money case, and the other a 2021 law school graduate. Critics, including former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance, argue this shift undermines the DOJ's independence. The Trump administration has aggressively reshaped the department, firing or reassigning officials and dropping criminal cases against Trump under the rationale that sitting presidents shouldn't be prosecuted. The Justice Department, now led by Attorney General Pam Bondi—another former Trump defense lawyer—has also launched a “weaponization working group” to scrutinize past investigations into Trump. The White House, for its part, insists the DOJ was previously weaponized against Trump and is now being restored.Senior Justice Department ethics official resigns over sidelining by Trump appointees, source says | ReutersA federal judge is set to hear arguments on whether to dismiss corruption charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams, following a controversial request from Trump administration prosecutors. The Justice Department, under orders from Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove—a former Trump defense lawyer—asked to drop the case, claiming Adams is needed to help enforce the president's immigration policies. The move has sparked outrage, with several prosecutors, including the lead attorney, resigning in protest. Critics argue the dismissal is politically motivated, especially after reports that Adams' team suggested the mayor would support Trump's policies if the charges disappeared. The DOJ insists the decision isn't about the case's merits, but Adams' political future. The charges, filed under Biden's administration, accused Adams of accepting bribes from Turkish nationals, which he denies. The dismissal would be *without prejudice*, meaning the case could be reopened after the November mayoral election—something critics see as a pressure tactic. With Adams' political future in question and New York Democrats calling for his resignation, the legal and political stakes are high.Judge to weigh Trump administration bid to drop NY mayor Eric Adams' case | ReutersElectric-truck maker Nikola has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing cash shortages and difficulties securing funding. The company, which once promised to revolutionize the EV industry, struggled with leadership instability, weak sales, and a plummeting stock price. Like other pandemic-era EV startups such as Fisker and Lordstown Motors, Nikola found itself unable to sustain its capital-intensive operations as high interest rates and low demand dried up investor support. The company plans to sell off most or all of its assets while maintaining limited truck and hydrogen-fueling operations through March. Nikola, which went public in 2020 via a SPAC deal, has cycled through four CEOs in four years, with industry veteran Stephen Girsky currently at the helm. Despite ramping up production of hydrogen-powered trucks in 2024, the company bled money, losing hundreds of thousands of dollars per vehicle. Fleet operators' reluctance to invest in EV infrastructure further compounded its struggles. The bankruptcy marks the end of a turbulent journey for a firm that once positioned itself as Tesla's trucking rival.Struggling e-truck maker Nikola files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection | Reuters This is a public episode. The company once attracted robust interest and hype, marketing itself as the Apple of vehicles, but it struggled to run as a public company and was stuck with thousands of EVs that it did not sell, according to The Wall Street Journal. Fisker raised about $1 billion from various investors, but it ran through most of its cash before defaulting on a debt payment to one of its leading investors, according to the WSJ. The company saw key executives head for the exits as it struggled to roll out its first model, the Ocean SUV, which was plagued by complaints about quality, including problems with the brakes. Source: dailycaller.com Pizza Hut Closes 15 Locations Amid Major Franchisee Dispute — 129 More at Risk of Closing A significant number of Pizza Hut restaurants face closure due to an ongoing financial dispute with one of its major franchisees. As reported by Daily Mail, a total of 150 restaurants are set to close, with an additional 129 across Illinois, Georgia, South Carolina, and Wisconsin on the brink of shutting down as part of the dispute. The closure wave began unexpectedly in Northwest Indiana, where several Pizza Hut outlets ceased operations. Signs on the doors read “location closed” or “We apologize for any inconvenience. We are temporarily closed,” NWI.com first reported. The root of the issue lies in the contractual disagreements and financial strain between Pizza Hut and Texas-based EYM Group, which operates multiple restaurant brands nationwide. According to court records, the franchisee defaulted on its payments to Pizza Hut, failing to pay 3 million owed in late 2022 and 2.6 million owed in 2023. EYM Group has been seeking to sell its Pizza Hut restaurants, citing inflation, labor costs, a lack of innovation, and other factors as contributing to its financial struggles. Episode 2765: Jacob Lund Fisker addresses the vanishing middle class, emphasizing personal financial responsibility. He argues that the middle class suffers due to poor choices in spending versus saving, highlighting that those who adopt a saver/producer mindset thrive even in tough economic times. Fisker underscores the importance of financial education and prudent resource management to prevent future economic hardships. Read along with the original article(s) here: http://earlyretirementextreme.com/the-disapperance-of-the-middle-class.html Quotes to ponder: "The middle class needs to start by taking a very serious look at itself, because all the problems that the middle class is undergoing could have been prevented by making different choices." "It's curious to me how people don't want to ‘sacrifice' yet are perfectly happy to ‘struggle'. My goal is tranquility. Not instant gratification." "We have a long way to go, but until we actually go, this problem will keep repeating itself over and over getting increasingly worse as long as people are blaming everyone but themselves."
