Join Corey and Jeff as they discuss what Jeff does at the helm of Microsoft’s developer relations group, how Microsoft defines “developer relations,” the critical role docs play in developer success, how Microsoft was able to seamlessly transition Build into a fully remote event during the COVID-19 pandemic, how successful documentation is more of a lifestyle than an initiative, how Microsoft writes docs before they write code, the one thing that makes Microsoft tick, and more.
Jeff Sandquist really needs no introduction to the Live Immediately family, as this is the third time I have had the privilege to interview Jeff. Jeff has become a close friend and he was the host of the brilliant Intentionally Wandering Podcast that literally changed my life. But over the past year, Jeff has been going through some changes in his own life, assessing what is improving his life, what isn’t, and what things in his life have simply run their course. This has lead Jeff to do something that many people might think about, but struggle to make the final decision. Jeff has deleted all of his social media accounts. He has also stopped his podcast and blog. In this episode I really dive deep into why Jeff felt the need to pull back from the digital world and how he feels about not being as connected anymore. And his answers might surprise you. This isn’t an episode about social media bashing, it is about knowing yourself, knowing when to quit, knowing when things in your life stop benefitting you, and the importance of experimenting in your life. Jeff allows his curiosity to lead his life. Sometimes it is through the unknown, and sometimes it is back to the beginning. I hope you enjoy x www.liveimmediately.com
Sitting in sunny Perth, Western Australia, makes cold weather or illness seem far from Amanda's mind, but they still happen to us on our travels and we still get through it! In Episode 50 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast, Amanda chats with three guests about experiences of adverse weather and health on their travels and it turns out that these generally make for some good stories. First up, Amanda chats with fellow Aussie Brooke McAlary about what they’ve learnt about experiencing really cold weather over the years. When you grow up in a warm country, you’ve got a lot to learn! Jeff Sandquist had a somewhat scary health issue in a plane on the way to Iceland, but they chat about how he made the most of that and about other travels in Scandinavia, too. Martin Bailey was visiting the very other end of the world when he began to have symptoms of what turned out to be a brain tumour on an Antarctic expedition, and they chat about how he dealt with this issue and his recommendations for other travellers. I am mixing it up a little bit in this episode as my good friend, Jeff Sandquist, is taking on the hosting duties. I interviewed Jeff for the Live Immediately Podcast way back in episode one, and I first met Jeff when my family and I were on our year adventure through North America. I was on a Skype call with Jeff the other day and he suggested that he guest host an episode of my podcast and interview me. I had no idea what questions he was going to ask and it is quite free flowing. Jeff starts off with a fast 20-question game to get to know me a little, and then he dives into this notion of FUN. Fun is a big component of my life and my personality, and it is something that Jeff and I have been discussing a lot lately with each other. Even though fun has been part of my DNA for a long time, it was Jeff who raised it with me and really got me thinking about fun in a different way. Some key takeaways from this episode would be, to start things with no expectations so whatever happens is going to be great and surprising, and to intentionally look for fun in everything that you do. This was a fun episode to record and I am so thankful to have people like Jeff in my life that try to pull the best out of me and get me thinking about things in a different way. I am sure you’re going to learn some new things about me, and I hope you look for and create a bunch of fun in your day today. I hope you enjoy x www.liveimmediately.com
Amanda is always looking for great reasons to persuade others to travel more and Episode 40 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast provides quite a few of those. Amanda chats with three guests who each have had interesting experiences teaching them something important on their travels Jeff Ryan, who in previous episodes has taught us the dangers of porcupines eating the rubber parts of your car, returns to chat about how travel can teach us a much more open mindset. Following Jeff, Amanda chats with Chris Christensen who has already learnt that anything bad that happens on your travels is just a good story and not worth otherwise remembering, and he shares a great story about having trouble finding room at the inn when his children were young. Finally, Amanda gets very philosophical with Jeff Sandquist who went on a road trip and figured out some enormous changes he needed to make to his life. Jeff Sandquist is someone who took my family and I into a stormwater drain in Minneapolis when I first met him. He is also the host of the Intentionally Wandering Podcast, and someone who has been quite influential in my life over the past 18 months. In today’s episode, Jeff shares the key dots in his life and the lessons learnt along the way. We discuss dealing with death from an early age, how curiosity creates change, having a flexible focus on life, letting go of control, living with less, and so much more. I have learnt so much from Jeff, and when you listen to our conversation, you will understand why. I hope you enjoy x
Discovering new cultural norms and comparing them to our own is one of the most fascinating parts of travel and the three guests on Episode 18 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast have all given this issue a great deal of thought as well. First up, Annalicia Lynn describes the cultural confusion she felt when she first moved to Taiwan to speak English. The assumptions she made about the culture based on her own experiences back in the States led her to some uncomfortable moments in her early days in Taiwan. Jeff Sandquist talks about cultural fusion and his experience of Scandinavian heritage as he grew up with in Minnesota, and what he found when he visited Norway and saw Scandinavian culture up close. In another case of cultural confusion, Glenn Shiell describes the issues facing the Japanese ski resort of Niseko with the growing numbers of Australians coming to ski during the Australian summer - and what happens when these Aussies don’t necessarily show quite enough cultural sensitivity. Gaining confidence from your travels is just one more great reason to get out there and travel often. In Episode 15 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast Amanda talks to three guests who all agree that travelling has increased their confidence substantially and helped them out in all kinds of ways, including life beyond travel. First up, Amanda chats with Jeff Sandquist of Intentionally Wandering, who only started travelling relatively recently and learnt so much from it - travelling gave him a brand new kind of confidence. After that she speaks with Annalicia Lynn who spent a year living and working in Taiwan and was particularly able to notice how much her confidence had grown when her family came to visit. Amanda's final guest is Candace Rardon, and when they spoke, Candace was spending a couple of months in Norway writing a book about a trip she took to India, which was the kind of trip which pushed her far outside her comfort zone and therefore boosted her confidence significantly. Episode 7 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast is all about making unexpected friendships when you travel. Getting to know local people is one of my favourite parts of travelling, and my two guests have had some great experiences doing just that in various parts of the world. First up is Bethaney Davies from Flashpacker Family, who has two really interesting stories to tell about friendships she established with local people in Vietnam and Myanmar. Her tale of meeting the monk in Myanmar (who, yes, is on Facebook) is one of my favourite stories ever! My second guest is Jeff Sandquist of the Intentionally Wandering podcast. He tells of how his experiences couchsurfing on his solo road trip around the United States helped him make two new friends who he’s still in touch with. Whether good or bad, facing surprises is usually part of travel. In Episode 6 of The Thoughtful Travel Podcast I’m talking to two other travellers about the surprises they’ve encountered on their travels. First up is Candace Rardon, someone I was super-excited to interview and have known online for some years. Candace is a sketch artist, writer, photographer and all-round travel genius and a deep thinker on travel as well. She shares several stories of surprises she’s had when her expectations have been shattered on her travels - and how this always turns out for the best. Next I talk to Jeff Sandquist of the Intentionally Wandering podcast. He philosophically talks about how surprised he has been by the impact of travel on his life and how the lessons from travel have been drawn back into this everyday life at home, too. Welcome to Vibrant Potential. I’m your host, Dr Chris Frykman. Today’s guest is Dr Jeff Sandquist. I like this dude. He’s a chiropractor, a nutritional expert, and a self proclaimed multipotentialite. This is a killer show for you if you’re constantly being drawn in another direction. I’ve listed tons of resources for you on the the show notes for today’s show at www.drchrisfrykman.com/intentionallywandering. Intentionally Wandering is the name of Jeff’s show too. I love Intentionally wandering because Jeff gives us permission to not know. I don’t know if that’s how Jeff would put it, but for me that’s a significant concept. Jeff encourages us to be flexibly focused on life journey, not the destination. He just released an episode on his show in which he interviews me. You can find that at www.intentionallywandering.com/32. My intention with this podcast is to help your achieve YOUR Vibrant Potential. Around minute 45 of this podcast Jeff says that he’s said “no” to more things than he’s said “yes” to in the past year. It’s in the context of simple living. I really want to draw your attention to this concept because the more clear I get about what I’m choosing to be up to in this life, the more I can say no to invites, even if they are amazing invites, but if they aren’t congruent with what I’m up to, then it’s a no for right now. Somewhere along the way, I decided it was important to be open minded. I still believe that but more and more I find it important to temper that open mindedness with a construct from which to work from for your life. If you want to create your life, you have to behave in a way that promotes that vision. In last week’s episode, James Butler says we are the sum of all of our choices. So true. Do you know what you’re up to? If you have an inkling that you have something great to give but you’re not quite sure what it is, I highly recommend having a conversation with James. He graciously opened up 3 premium coaching sessions to the Vibrant Potential tribe and I genuinely hope you are one of the lucky 3 people that will take him up on that. I recently did a session with him myself and I am on FIRE now. I’m constantly redefining who I am and in my session with James I had a huge break through and I’m excited to share that with you soon. For now, if you want to experience that for yourself, check out last week’s show notes at drchrisfrykman.com/peakobjectives and you can find James’ email. Just shoot him an email with the subject line, “Vibrant Potential” and let him know you’d like to take him up on his free coaching session if he still has one open. This episode is a great compliment to last weeks as there are a lot of concepts that overlap. Today Jeff and I talk about creating yourself too. So let’s just get to it. Enjoy the show! http://www.slowyourhome.com/18 How does a comic book collector (and I’m talking serious collector with thousands of comics, DVDs and action figures) become a minimalist? And what causes such a big change? Today I chat with Jeff Sandquist, ex-chiropractor and comic book collector, and present-day writer, speaker and wanderer, about the journey he’s taken over the past 2 years. Jeff used to be a legitimate collector. He had thousands of comic books, DVDs and action figures, which he’d been collecting and keeping in mint condition since his teens. In today’s episode we talk about his snap decision to not only stop collecting, but to let go of it all. What caused the change? How hard was it to let go? Does he regret it? What does he think caused him to collect in the first place? We also dig in to the wider changes Jeff has made in his life over the past couple of years, and the impact minimalism has had on his work, his world view and the things he values. Enjoy listening to Jeff’s story (and maybe a little nerding out over The Walking Dead). Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/slow See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
