La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Delivered by Vocationist Sisters and Father Peter Tukan, SDB from the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Daniel 7: 13-14; Rs psalm 93: 1ab.1c-2.5; Revelation 1: 5-8; John 18: 33b-37 THE POWER OF GOD IS ETERNAL-FOREVER AND EVER The theme for our meditation on this 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time is: The Power of God is Eternal- Forever and Ever. This last Sunday of the liturgical year B we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. The focus of our attention is the person of Jesus Christ, our true king. What we see in Jesus as the king certainly His power as the Lord and the Son of God. The proof is obvious, that His teachings and miracles really reveal a powerful being which is beyond all human and natural powers in the world. The power in Jesus is so different from all kinds of the power in the world. For example, with regard to political rulers like the Pontius Pilate, what makes different is the fact that the ruler Pilate had reigned in the world and had finished, whereas Jesus Christ continuous to reign all times. With religious authorities such as the Pharisees and Scribes, Jesus continuous to present the power of the almighty God who saves mankind, while they had testified about a God who punished and always frightened people. The distinctive factor in the power of Jesus Christ lies in its characteristic which is eternal- forever and ever. Jesus as the eternal king who reigns forever and ever shows us his basic characteristics. The first one is referring to the power that comes from the very source which is from eternity to eternity. That source is the Almighty God Himself, the ruler of heavens and earth, the creator of the universe. The book of the prophet Daniel in the first reading mentions that the Son of Man was given power, honour, and authority as king. We should understand it in this way: that the almighty Father had given this power to His Son who became flesh, namely Jesus Christ. The system of democracy, monarchy, kingdom, united nations do not possess this kind of power. They are totally different from the Kingdom of the Lord. Another characteristic would be about the power that transcends space and time. The book of Revelation in the second reading describes a power which is the alpha and the omega, namely the power works in all times and will remain for ever. This power does not depend on physical structure, territory, race, culture, language, tenure, and political development. This is really a spiritual kingdom, therefore, the book of Revelation says that every member of the kingdom is a priest for God. The hallmark of the power of God's kingdom is the substance or content and mission carried out by Jesus our king. To the Pontius Pilate who wanted to know the substance and mission of Jesus, the answer he got was the truth. In democracy, monarchy, kingdom, fascism, communism, even Pilate himself there can be truth for their legitimacy. But such truth will be lost after the leader dies. What is eternal and to remain forever is the truth of God's love that we believe in until now. Let's pray. In the name of the Father… O Lord, may this celebration of Sunday strengthen our obedience to Jesus Christ our king, and we continue to participate in His kingdom. Our Father... In the name of the Father...

In this episode of We Are Vineyard, Jay chats with Matthew Bates about growing up in a forestry family, the quiet faith of his mother, and the people who invested in his early life. Matthew talks about transitioning from a physics degree to theology, how he found himself studying greek simply out of personal interest, and the writers and theologians who shaped his questions and perspective on Jesus and scripture. He gives a summation of the key themes in his writing and shares the components of his books about which he receives positive feedback, and those which receive the most pushback. Finally, Matthew describes some ways a congregation might benefit from reversing the gospel presentation, and why this choice is more than just semantics. Matthew W. Bates (Ph.D., Notre Dame) is Professor of Theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. Bates is a Protestant who enjoys the challenge of teaching in a Catholic context. His books include Gospel Allegiance (Brazos, 2019) the award-winning Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic, 2017), The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press, 2015), and The Hermeneutics of the Apostolic Proclamation (Baylor University Press, 2012). He also co-founded and co-hosts the popular OnScript podcast. After completing a B.S. in physics from Whitworth University (1999), Bates began a career in electrical engineering. His life took a swerve when he enrolled in a biblical studies program at Regent College in Vancouver, B.C. (M.C.S., 2004, The Biblical Studies Prize). In 2005 Bates began PhD studies in theology at the University of Notre Dame, specializing in Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity (CJA). Upon graduation (2010) he was named the winner of the Shaheen Award in the humanities, the top graduation prize at Notre Dame, competitive across all disciplines. In 2011 Bates accepted his current academic post. Bates enjoys hiking, baseball, and chasing around his seven children. (November 20, 2022) In preparation for this Advent season, we need to stand back and examine our conscience, with a question: Am I ready to stand before God? Father Charles Persing, pastor of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton parish, invites us to prepare for that moment by repentance and the Sacrament of Confession. God's mercy is boundless.

Why does Christ save and use sinners- 1Timothy 1-12-17 looks forward to the second serial reading in morning public worship on the coming Lord's Day. In these six verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that the glorious God saves and uses sinners precisely to show that His alone is all the glory and goodness.
