When you reflect you remind yourself about what was amazing, what you want to do more of, and what you'll let go of. Walk through the exercises in this episode for yourself AND with your team as you plan for 2024. Then, create this as a practice throughout the year to make adjustments and changes as you work towards your organizational goals. What you'll learn: → what is a reflection practice? → how often you should be reflecting. → questions to ask yourself when reflecting. → using what you learn to help you when you aren't hitting your goals. Want to skip ahead? Here are key takeaways: [3:30] Why is reflection important? It helps you understand what worked well and what didn't. As you go through life, you tend to forget what happened in the day-to-day that positively or negatively affects your personal and professional goals. [7:56] As a leader, you need to model the work. Yes, you can lead your team in this exercise. It makes a bigger impact if you do the work yourself and model that for your team. That will help you build a culture of ongoing reflection as you go through the year. [15:17] Create a better breakdown of your fundraising goal to know who to target. If you're looking for a certain amount of donors at a certain average gift then you can track where you're at and which audience you should be targeting. [11:23] Figure out the right cadence for yourself. Julie recommends at a minimum, a quarterly review. Take quick inventory on what you intended to happen and what actually happened. Think about what you will keep doing and be real with yourself about what you'll let go of. [13:53] Start by getting out a piece of paper and asking yourself questions. Some questions include, what are you most proud of? What did you learn that you want to take with you? What milestones did you achieve? Where did I develop a skill that I want to expand on. [20:57] Be real about what you come up with and use it to pick yourself up if you aren't hitting your goals. By reflecting you get a better understand of what isn't working so you can make adjustments and keep the train on the tracks. Resources [quiz] Should You DIY Your Website? Today I sit down with Matthew Bates, professor of Theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois to discuss two of his more recent books, Why the Gospel? Living the Good News of King Jesus with Purpose, and Salvation By Allegiance Alone: Rethinking Faith, Works, and the Gospel of Jesus the King. Bates has argued convincingly that “faith” in the New Testament means much more than “belief,” and that what God calls us to better described as fidelity, faithfulness, and allegiance. He also shares with me the intriguing idea of how God graciously shares his glory with humans–and that our salvation involves spreading God's glory throughout creation. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Matthew Bates of Quincy University about two very important books. The first is his brand-new book entitled Why the Gospel, which explores the nature of the Gospel message and why it matters for the church. The second is his provocative 2017 book Salvation by Allegiance Alone, in which he argues that the term ‘faith' should be understood as allegiance to Jesus as king. We discuss how the Gospel is the announcement of the kingship of Jesus, sealed by his death, resurrection, and ascension, and what it means for Jesus to be king of the world. We then explore how the faith we place in the Gospel should linguistically and historically be understood as allegiance to Jesus as king, which is central to the message of the Gospel, and the practical and theological consequences of this understanding of both ‘Gospel' and ‘faith'. Bryan Christiansen is the Head Coach at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. The University added Men's and Women's swimming in 2021 and '22-'23 was their first season competing. This is the second time that Quincy has started a swimming program. In 2015, they added Women's swimming but cut it in 2017 due to budget issues. Bryan seems confident that won't happen again. Including men this time is a big reason why. The support seems to be in place with scholarships, a full coaching staff, and enough budget for things like power towers and a training trip. But how does a college program start? In this podcast, Bryan takes us through the year of coaching before he started coaching. Most of that year was spent recruiting and building a roster. Luckily, he has some experience with transitioning a program. Bryan came from Frostburg State University in Maryland. During his time there, the program transitioned from DII to DII. That experience gave him some patience in this first season at Quincy. That first season went well for the program. You could almost say it went better than expected. Freshman Wyatt Walsh dropped 6 seconds in his 400 IM and 4 in his 200 IM, down to times that would have qualified for DII NCAAs. The only problem was that the first-year program fell two swimmers short of the required roster number to send an athlete to NCAAs. A tough lesson but in their very first season, it was a sign that things are going in the right direction. The program appears to be in a great place heading into season number two.

Matt joins the conversation to discuss his new book Why the Gospel? Matthew W. Bates is a father of seven and Professor of Theology at Quincy University. His popular books include the award-winning Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic), The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press), The Gospel Precisely (Renew), and Gospel Allegiance (Brazos). Bates holds a B.S. in physics, an M.C.S. in biblical studies from Regent College, and a PhD in theology (New Testament) from the University of Notre Dame. A Protestant by conviction, he enjoys the privilege and challenge of teaching in a Catholic context. You begin the book with the concept of Jesus as King, why do believe this is important? How do you believe deconstruction has affected our understanding of the gospel both positively and negatively? In chapter 5 you write about a ‘Royal Transformation', how might this benefit those who are hungering for a deeper understanding of discipleship? In chapter 6 ‘Good News for the Nones', on page 141 you mention quality over quantity. Why is this important to the nones? In the cult classic, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, King Arthur has an exchange with a peasant (Dennis) where he learns that those under his rule have a very distorted view of how one actually becomes a king. It's not not from strange women lying in ponds distributing swords. In this captivating episode, Josh sits down with Dr. Matthew Bates to discuss his upcoming book, "Why the Gospel?" which seeks to transform our understanding of the gospel by emphasizing Jesus' role as King. They delve into the implications of recognizing Jesus as an authoritative ruler, rather than merely believing in him. Dr. Bates shares insights on how the King Jesus gospel can attract those disillusioned with the church and help combat hypocrisy. They also explore the challenges of grasping the concept of kingship in today's Western culture and the importance of responding to the gospel with loyalty and allegiance. Join us for this thought-provoking conversation as we uncover the true essence of the gospel and its impact on the church and believers today.Guest Bio:Matthew W. Matthew W. Bates (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame) argues that the Greek word pistis often translated as “faith” is better understood as “allegiance.” Therefore, we are justified by allegiance to Christ alone, not simply by an intellectual assent to the facts about Jesus. This, of course, raises deep theological questions about the role of human action in justification and salvation and whether the Reformers understood things correctly when they talked about justification by faith alone. Matthew is a Professor of Theology at Quincy University. His main teaching area is the Bible and early Christian literature. He also teaches courses in Western Religion, Church History, and Christian Spirituality. Dr. Bates is an award-winning author. His popular and influential books include Gospel Allegiance (Brazos, 2019), Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic, 2017), and The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press, 2015). Current book projects on salvation and christology are underway. Dr. Bates also co-hosts OnScript, a Bible and theology podcast. He enjoys family life, hiking, baseball, and good conversation. In this episode of We Are Vineyard, Jay chats with Matthew Bates about growing up in a forestry family, the quiet faith of his mother, and the people who invested in his early life. Matthew talks about transitioning from a physics degree to theology, how he found himself studying greek simply out of personal interest, and the writers and theologians who shaped his questions and perspective on Jesus and scripture. He gives a summation of the key themes in his writing and shares the components of his books about which he receives positive feedback, and those which receive the most pushback. Finally, Matthew describes some ways a congregation might benefit from reversing the gospel presentation, and why this choice is more than just semantics. Matthew W. What does it mean to have faith in Jesus? If the gospel is more centered on Jesus' kingship (as we've explored on our previous two episodes) perhaps Christian faith looks more like allegiance. Matthew Bates, Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University, joins us to discuss the relationship between the gospel, salvation, faith, obedience, and grace. Most people get married with the intention of spending the rest of their lives together. Unfortunately, many marriages don't make it that far. And when a couple does decide to call it quits, the whole process can be incredibly painful - especially for the kids. In this episode, we'll learn the journey of Brad Stone on how he went through this battle. So watch on and get started!Brad Stone is a professional baseball player (06-13), gym owner, father, and childhood abuse survivor who made it through a divorce. A graduate of CBC HS in 2003 Brad was a multi-sport athlete playingbaseball and basketball. Upon graduation, he went on a baseball scholarship to Quincy University in Illinois where he received all-conference honors all three years and was First Team All-Region and an All American as a Junior. For almost two decades Brad has been a private pitching instructor in the St. Louis area and a strength coach since 2012, owning his own business since 2015. He has worked with hundreds of athletes from the high school, college, and professional ranks. In the weight room, Brad has over 20 years of experience on both sides of the equation, as a coach and a client. Having been an athlete for most of his life he has had access to some world-class coaching. These opportunities to learn from the best in the business have helped him formulate his personal philosophies and create the foundation for his career as a strength coach. In his free time, he loves playing with my kids and dogs, lifting weights, and traveling.“My unique perspective, having been a client and a coach, allows me to see all sides of the equation. I know what works to be motivated and pushed as an athlete as well as what needs to be done as your coach. Having been a client allows me to understand the day to day struggles real people go through and how to help push through the tougher days!” - Brad Stonewebsite: www.StoneStrengthSystems.com IG: stonestrengthsystems facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Stonestrengthsystems personal: https://voyagestl.com/interview/meet-brad-stone-of-crestwood/ Be sure to check out this episode of the BOF Podcast. We loved this interview with Alyssa. "Passionate and Confident" are two words to describe her. A strong footballer for the U17 OPDL Girls team. A very exciting time in Alyssa's life. A recent scholarship offer and acceptance to Quincy University a D2 school in the USA and finding the right fit and program. Her Coach Nicky McDonald says "Alyssa is an all-around impact player. She offers a physical presence, extremely knowledgeable and is a true leader on and off the pitch. She is a gifted athlete, and it has been an absolute pleasure watching her grow."
In this episode, Ryan offers Landon three approaches to the word that have helped him frame the discussion, from philosopher Kierkegaard's palate-cleansing “virtue of the absurd”, to theologian Tillich's “centered act of personality," and finally biblical scholar Matthew Bates' “allegiance”.Useful references from the discussion: Søren Kierkegaard - was a Danish theologian, philosopher, poet, social critic, and religious author who is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopherPaul Johannes Tillich - was a German-American Christian existentialist philosopher and Lutheran Protestant theologian who is widely regarded as one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth centuryMatthew Bates - is Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University. His main teaching area is the Bible and early Christian literature. To join the discussion, visit us on Instagram @meaninginthemiddlepod and in the Meaning in the Middle Facebook group.Cheers!

“The teachers are not alright.” News accounts and social media pages attest to the fatigue – both mental and physical – America's teachers are experiencing this fall as they continue to adjust to the new normal after the past year of pandemic classrooms. It seems our teachers could use some of the social emotional learning strategies they are sharing with students trying to cope. Hyam Elsaharty knows a lot about that. She used her FFT grant to research in Malaysia how collectivist communities apply SEL skills in homes and schools, then applied her findings at Chicago's Mather High School, where one-third of students were refugees, immigrants and/or English Language Learners. Now, she's sharing her expertise with Seattle Public Schools as its Consulting SEL Teacher for the entire district.Today, we're learning from Hayam Elsaharty, a Fund for Teachers Fellow who also serves on our Educator Advisory Council. Hyam holds an undergraduate degree in criminal justice from the University of Indiana, a master's degree in Resource Development from Northeastern Illinois University, a second master's degree in Education from Quincy University and a certificate in English as a Second Language. With her 2017 Fund for Teachers grant, she and a colleague investigated programs in Malaysia supporting Rohingyan refugees who fled genocide in Myanmar. With new knowledge and insights, Hyam and her teammate expanded the advisory curriculum by creating a series of meaningful units that meet the specific social and emotional needs of refugee and immigrant students. The following year, buoyed by her fellowship experience, she applied for and was awarded a Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms grant to research Social Emotional Learning in Peru. After being named Chicago Public Schools' first Social Emotional Learning Teacher of the Year, she moved to Seattle to help direct a district wide SEL focus on adult education, and supporting educators to develop knowledge, confidence, and agency in teaching students SEL skills. Our conversation began talking about her fellowship and how it changed her life personally and professionally, then migrated to the topic of how teachers can use social emotional learning for themselves.

Dr. Matthew Bates is Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University. He recalls how, having majored in physics as an undergraduate, he learned beginning Greek independently before jumping into second-year Greek in seminary. In this episode he reveals how Paul's choice of verbiage in an important summary of the gospel indicates his conceptions of Christ's nature and history, especially both his divine pre-existence and his exaltation.

When taking over Quincy University's under performing offense in 2019, Keith Barefield made two key decisions. First, he simplified progressions to what he called "either-or" decisions. Next, he made high tempo the default for the offense. In this Quickcast, Barefield, now an analyst for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, explains the steps they took to make Quincy the fastest tempo offense in NCAA Division 2 as well as breaking 14 school records and jumping into the top 25 offensive rankings. -Key decision on passing game progression -Why be uptempo? -How to make it measrusable -Results The Hawks were the #1 team in NCAA D2 in tempo, running a play every 18.9 seconds. In the process, the pace at which they played accomplished the following on offense: -Broke 14 School records -Points per game: +14.6 points per game over 2018, #30 nationally, a 121 spot jump nationally -Passing yards +152 ypg over 2018, 9th nationally, +132 spot jump -Total yards 445ypg, +128 ypg 23rd nationally, +100 spot jump Get his course, "Turnaround an Offense with Tempo" on CoachTube: https://coachtube.com/course/football/turnaround-an-offense-with-tempo-keith-barefield/11947179?ambassador=325306f59bb543b6883ff4baa Get our free digital magazine: coachandcoordinator.com/magazine

Sign Up To Receive Our FFA Stories Newsletter! Email address: SHOW NOTES INTRODUCING CODY COLLINS! In today's world, is there really any person we would describe as a "non-traditional" FFA student. Perhaps not, but at one point in time a student who did not come from a farm might have been considered "non-traditional". Cody did not have any prior connections to agriculture or the FFA except for his older sister being an FFA member. She pushed Cody to join, and he has not looked back. Cody describes himself as going "all out" for four years in the FFA and having a wonderful time. Cody had no knowledge of agriculture when he began, but today he has developed a passion for agriculture. He described himself as being welcomed with open arms by everyone in the FFA and agriculture. Cody tried every career development event that he could, excelling in public speaking. Cody followed in his sister's footsteps going into the FFA and his brother's footsteps working at McDonald's. In Illinois there is a state proficiency award for food service, and he won that award. Because of Cody's time in the FFA, he is able to connect the different aspects of agriculture to what he was doing working the food service industry. Cody is a musician, and his instrument is the trumpet. He also sang in his school's choir. Today he is studying music education at Quincy University. He hopes to be a music teacher in the future. Cody always knew that he wanted to be a teacher, and at the end of high school he found himself choosing between teaching agriculture, history and music. REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA: Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world. FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food. Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation. The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth. Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store: “The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”. What is the gospel of Jesus? What does it mean to have faith? The answers to these questions intricately shape what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus. For as much time as Christians spend emphasizing having faith in this good news, it is worthwhile to make sure we've understood it correctly.Matthew Bates is a theology professor at Quincy University, and has written several books connected to the themes of gospel and faith.Links from the episode:Matthew Bates' recently released book Gospel Allegiance. Also connected to that is his previous work Salvation by Allegiance Alone.Scot McKnight's The King Jesus Gospel.NT Wright's Simply Jesus and How God Became King.If you enjoyed this episode be sure to check out a recent episode from The Bible Project podcast, with Tim Mackie and NT Wright discussing what the word gospel means.Called Out is hosted by Tyler Braun. Is faith in Jesus enough for salvation? Perhaps, says Matthew Bates, but we're missing pieces of the gospel. The biblical gospel can never change. Yet our understanding of the gospel must change. The church needs an allegiance shift.Popular pastoral resources on the gospel are causing widespread confusion. Bates shows that the biblical gospel is different, fuller, and more beautiful than we have been led to believe. He explains that saving faith doesn't come through trust in Jesus's death on the cross alone but through allegiance to Christ the king. There is only one true gospel and one required response: allegiance.Bates ignited conversation with his successful and influential book Salvation by Allegiance Alone. Here he goes deeper while making his acclaimed teaching on salvation more accessible and experiential for believers who want to better understand and share the gospel. You've spoken. We've listened. You've asked for more episodes giving a window into the secret lives of OnScript co-hosts. Or at least, you've asked us to allow more time for chat between hosts. So we'll try to do a bit more of that. In this episode, Matt Lynch and Matt Bates, the co-founders of OnScript, ask each other questions about Paul, hell, life, violence, divine-human appearances in the OT, faith as allegiance, Matt B.'s new book, books we've read, and more. Enjoy, and share the word!
What is the relationship between the individual Christian and the community of faith? How do we navigate the pendulum swings between an overemphasis on the individual at the expense of community and an overemphasis on community at the expense of the individual? In this episode, OnScript host Amy Brown Hughes talks with her colleague Sharon Ketcham about her new book Reciprocal Church: Becoming a Community Where Faith Flourishes Beyond High School, how often we talk about faith as a "product," what theological anthropology must undergird our ecclesiology, and where hope lies in the future of the church.
For this episode I have a great conversation with Jake Zammit, the Director of Coaching for Legends FC in Brighton, MI. As a youth soccer player, Jake was a member of several Michigan State Championship Teams. In high school, Jake was a 4-time Varsity player at the University of Detroit Jesuit; winning a State Championship in 2001 and receiving All State honors. After High School, he accepted a full ride athletic scholarship to attend Quincy University in Illinois. US Soccer honored Jake as the 2018 Girls National Competitive Coach of the Year. Questions to Consider: What is your child's goal for their current season? What is their end goal for their youth sport? Is to play varsity in high school? Is it to play in college? Jake says, “Parents and athletes have to be honest with each other about what they want to get out of the game.” Are you having honest conversations to make sure you're on the same page? If you haven't already done so, sit down with your child to plot a course to get to the end game he or she really wants. Jake says, “If you push your player too hard, you'll eventually end up losing them.” How are you tempted to push your young athlete in ways that might not ultimately be helpful? What aspect of your character or spiritual development do you want to focus on this season? Jake suggests “patience” or “conflict management” as a place to begin. Follow BSD on Facebook today! Matthew W. Bates (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame) is Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. He is pressing the church towards a new precision: we are saved solely by allegiance to Jesus the king. Instead of faith alone, Christians must speak about salvation by allegiance alone. About the Book: We are saved by faith when we trust that Jesus died for our sins. This is the gospel, or so we are taught. But what is faith? And does this accurately summarize the gospel? Because faith is frequently misunderstood and the climax of the gospel misidentified, the gospel's full power remains untapped. While offering a fresh proposal for what faith means within a biblical theology of salvation, Matthew Bates presses the church toward a new precision: we are saved solely by allegiance to Jesus the king. Instead of faith alone, Christians must speak about salvation by allegiance alone. The book includes discussion questions for students, pastors, and church groups and a foreword by Scot McKnight. About the Author: Matthew W. Bates (PhD, University of Notre Dame) is assistant professor of theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. He is the author of The Hermeneutics of the Apostolic Proclamation and The Birth of the Trinity. Bates holds a Ph.D. from The University of Notre Dame in theology with a specialization is New Testament and early Christianity.
