The term “faith” in our English Bibles could often better be translated as allegiance—or so argues Matthew Bates. The term “allegiance” better captures both the authentic relational import of faith and its relationship to the royal gospel of Jesus, who is Christ the King. Taking seriously both the nature of the Gospel as a proclamation of kingship, and faith as a response of trusting loyalty, is a step toward the Christian unity for which Jesus prays.Matthew W. Bates (PhD, Notre Dame) is Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary with expertise on the gospel and salvation.Matthew Bates' books on salvation themes:Salvation by Allegiance Alone (2017) Gospel Allegiance (2019) The Gospel Precisely (2021) Why the Gospel (2023) Beyond the Salvation Wars (2025) Also referenced: Caesar and the Sacrament by Alan Streett This is the 272nd episode of Anabaptist Perspectives, a podcast, blog, and YouTube channel that examines various aspects of conservative Anabaptist life and thought.Sign-up for our monthly email newsletter which contains new and featured content!Join us on Patreon or become a website partner to enjoy bonus content!Visit our YouTube channel or connect on Facebook.Read essays from our blog or listen to them on our podcast, Essays for King JesusSubscribe on your podcast provider of choiceSupport us or learn more at anabaptistperspectives.org.The views expressed by our guests are solely their own and do not necessarily reflect the views of Anabaptist Perspectives or Wellspring Mennonite Church.

Al Mohler, Thomas Schreiner, and other SBC scholars are not having it. Why? Because Bates challenges the sacred cow of their Calvinistic system, daring to suggest that "faith" might actually involve something more than passive intellectual assent. In this video, we break down their most absurd objections—ranging from semantic gymnastics to straw man arguments—and show why Bates' proposal isn't just biblical, it's necessary. We'll explore: Why the word "pistis" can't be reduced to mental agreement How Calvinist categories often force Scripture into a philosophical grid Why "allegiance" offers a richer, more robust vision of saving faith And why the SBC gatekeepers feel so threatened by this If you're tired of theological ivory towers and want to dig into a gospel that demands real, embodied loyalty to King Jesus, this one's for you.
In this episode, Ronn & Mike welcome Dr. Matthew Bates back to the podcast to discuss his recently released book, Beyond the Salvation Wars. They discuss what the NT Greek word family of pistis indicates for how all peoples are to respond to the Gospel of King Jesus. They dive into the rifts between Protestants and Catholics, and the tensions amongst various different Protestant denominations and alliances regarding how we understand 'grace', 'faith', and 'works.' They conclude with their hope of the potential for greater Christian unity, not just amongst Protestants, but of the Western and Eastern arms of the Church and the way forward as we all grow in our understanding and appreciation of loyalty laid down before King Jesus.

Matthew Bates joins us today to work out salvation. What is it? What have we got wrong? In our contemporary moment, we find ourselves wrestling with a profound misunderstanding of the gospel - a narrative that has been truncated, individualized, and stripped of its royal, communal essence. The gospel is not merely a personal transaction about individual salvation, but a comprehensive royal announcement about Jesus the Christ. For too long, both Protestant and Catholic traditions have inadvertently narrowed the expansive biblical vision of salvation. We've reduced faith to mental assent or ritualistic practice, when in reality, faith is fundamentally about allegiance - a comprehensive, embodied loyalty to King Jesus that transforms not just individuals, but entire communities and, ultimately, all of creation. Matthew seeks to recover a more holistic understanding. We are saved not just from something, but for something: the full restoration of our image-bearing capacity, the renewal of God's glory in and through us. This isn't about personal spiritual escapism, but about participating in a cosmic restoration project. In our conversation today, we'll explore how reimagining salvation as allegiance can bridge denominational divides, challenge our narcissistic cultural assumptions, and invite us into a more profound understanding of discipleship. We're not just talking about theological abstractions, but about a transformative way of being in the world. Prepare to have your understanding of the gospel radically expanded. Matthew W. Bates is Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. His books have won top honors from Christianity Today, Outreach Magazine, Jesus Creed, and Englewood Review. When he isn't hiking, baseballing, or chasing his seven children, he co-hosts the OnScript podcast. The gospel is that God is in the process of restoring glory through Jesus the rescuing King, who: preexisted as God the Son, was sent by the Father, took on human flesh in fulfillment of God's promises to David, died for our sins in accordance with Scripture, was buried, was raised on the third day in accordance with Scripture, appeared to many witnesses, is enthroned at the right hand of God as the ruling Christ, has sent the Holy Spirit to his people to effect his rule, and will come again as final judge to rule. —Matthew Bates

In this episode of the Divine Council Worldview Podcast, Ronn and Mike interview Dr. Matthew Bates, author of Why the Gospel? Living the Good News of King Jesus with Purpose (Christianity Today's 2024 book award winner in the category of Popular Theology). Their conversation surveys the narrative nature of the gospel story, the meaning of divine kingship in the first century, and the modern implications of living under Jesus' sovereignty. In the end, Bates sees the gospel as much more than the forgiveness of sins. He believes that being a Christian includes both an intentional confession of Jesus as King and a commitment of allegiance to this King. Get the book here: Why the Gospel? Earlier this year, John MacArthur said that Martin Luther King Jr. was “a nonbeliever who misrepresented everything about Christ and the gospel.” Last week, Justin Giboney responded with an article in CT explaining why MacArthur was wrong about MLK. This leads Phil, Kaitlyn, and Skye to ask when is it appropriate to define who is, and who is not, a true Christian, and what criteria should we use? Theologian Matthew Bates is back to discuss his new book, “Why the Gospel?” He defines six popular “malformed” gospels, and why bypassing the importance of Jesus' kingship is dangerous for the church. Today I sit down with Matthew Bates, professor of Theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois to discuss two of his more recent books, Why the Gospel? Living the Good News of King Jesus with Purpose, and Salvation By Allegiance Alone: Rethinking Faith, Works, and the Gospel of Jesus the King. Bates has argued convincingly that “faith” in the New Testament means much more than “belief,” and that what God calls us to better described as fidelity, faithfulness, and allegiance. He also shares with me the intriguing idea of how God graciously shares his glory with humans–and that our salvation involves spreading God's glory throughout creation. In this episode, I analyze an article published by Dr. Matthew Bates entitled ‘Conscience Uncoupling from the Church is the New Temptation, about why many people are leaving the church, how to know if someone might be willing to stay, and how we can tell if someone has an authentic faith. Bates makes a lot of very important points, and I supplement his review with comments based on my own experience as a Christian and in ministry as well as explore some of the reasons why I think people are leaving the church and what we can do to bring them back. There are a lot of really important issues that I touch on in this episode, and I hope to follow some of these threads in the future! Something is wrong with the American church. Is it too woke? Too aligned with Christian nationalism? Or is the problem deeper and more theological? Matthew Bates, author of Why the Gospel, believes so, arguing that today's American church possesses a fundamental misunderstanding of the Gospel itself. Today, he explains more in his conversation with Patrick, answering: What is the true Gospel message? Why is it “Good News,” even for the “nones” and “dones” of today's age? What are the malformed Gospel messages that we've fallen for? How would our lives change if we adapted this true interpretation of the Gospel? Plus, he shares why a correct understanding of the Gospel helps to reclaim a Christian's active role in social and political action. Listen now! Ok, truth time... Did you like this episode? In this episode, I talk with Dr. Matthew Bates of Quincy University about two very important books. The first is his brand-new book entitled Why the Gospel, which explores the nature of the Gospel message and why it matters for the church. The second is his provocative 2017 book Salvation by Allegiance Alone, in which he argues that the term ‘faith' should be understood as allegiance to Jesus as king. We discuss how the Gospel is the announcement of the kingship of Jesus, sealed by his death, resurrection, and ascension, and what it means for Jesus to be king of the world. We then explore how the faith we place in the Gospel should linguistically and historically be understood as allegiance to Jesus as king, which is central to the message of the Gospel, and the practical and theological consequences of this understanding of both ‘Gospel' and ‘faith'. Program Director Adam Borneman speaks with Dr. Matthew Bates (Quincy University) about the prevalence of tepid versions of the "good news", what it means to call Jesus "King", and his latest book.
This is a republished interview with Matthew Bates on his book “Gospel Allegiance: What Faith in Jesus Misses for Salvation in Christ” (Brazos Press, 2019). Bates recently published a new book called “Why the Gospel? Living the Good News of King Jesus with Purpose” (Eerdmans, 2023). Whereas Bates new book focuses on *why* the gospel was given, this present conversation is a helpful precursor as it focuses on *what* the gospel is. We discuss some of the central arguments made in “Gospel Allegiance”, including Bates' understanding of the pistis ('faith/faithfulness') word group, euangelion ('gospel'), and the relationship between these concepts and others in the Bible, especially the New Testament.
In the cult classic, Monty Python and The Holy Grail, King Arthur has an exchange with a peasant (Dennis) where he learns that those under his rule have a very distorted view of how one actually becomes a king. It's not not from strange women lying in ponds distributing swords. In this captivating episode, Josh sits down with Dr. Matthew Bates to discuss his upcoming book, "Why the Gospel?" which seeks to transform our understanding of the gospel by emphasizing Jesus' role as King. They delve into the implications of recognizing Jesus as an authoritative ruler, rather than merely believing in him. Dr. Bates shares insights on how the King Jesus gospel can attract those disillusioned with the church and help combat hypocrisy. They also explore the challenges of grasping the concept of kingship in today's Western culture and the importance of responding to the gospel with loyalty and allegiance. Join us for this thought-provoking conversation as we uncover the true essence of the gospel and its impact on the church and believers today.Guest Bio:Matthew W. Matthew W. Bates (Ph.D., University of Notre Dame) argues that the Greek word pistis often translated as “faith” is better understood as “allegiance.” Therefore, we are justified by allegiance to Christ alone, not simply by an intellectual assent to the facts about Jesus. This, of course, raises deep theological questions about the role of human action in justification and salvation and whether the Reformers understood things correctly when they talked about justification by faith alone. Matthew is a Professor of Theology at Quincy University. His main teaching area is the Bible and early Christian literature. He also teaches courses in Western Religion, Church History, and Christian Spirituality. Dr. Bates is an award-winning author. His popular and influential books include Gospel Allegiance (Brazos, 2019), Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic, 2017), and The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press, 2015). Current book projects on salvation and christology are underway. Dr. Bates also co-hosts OnScript, a Bible and theology podcast. He enjoys family life, hiking, baseball, and good conversation. Where does the gospel lead? What does the gospel create? What develops as a result of the gospel? Can you imagine an advertisement to be “free from weight loss” where the before and after picture looked the same? In the New Testament, the gospel that frees, the gospel that saves, the gospel that redeems leads to freed, saved, redeemed people living free, saved, redeemed lives. It means recognizing not just what we were saved from, but also what we were saved for.The sermon today is titled "The Demands of the Gospel." It is the final installment in our "What Is The Gospel" Series. The Scripture reading is from Ephesians 2:10 & Titus 3:8. Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on February 5, 2023. All lessons fit under one of 5 broad categories: Begin, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. This sermon is filed under Begin: A Gracious Gospel.Click here if you would like to watch the sermon or read a transcript.Footnotes (Sources and References Used In Today's Podcast):I am greatly indebted to Dr. Timothy Keller for the personal dimension of the gospel in this sermon series, and some of the illustrations used here come from him. Taking note from the classic movie "The Princess Bride," Ryan and Brian are looking at words that may not mean what you think they mean.In this opening episode, they look at the word "faith" and how it is used in the Bible. They look at the original Greek of the New Testament and discuss how we might be missing some of the intended meaning of faith.Book referenced: Salvation by Allegiance Alone by Matthew Bates - https://a.co/d/7AN9D2kLinks:Support Ryan and Brian's Bible BistroPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/thebiblebistroFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/thebiblebistroInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebiblebistro/Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3H7qRmgSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3I7Gw6AWebsite: https://www.thebiblebistro.comRyan and Brian's Bible Bistro is a podcast all about the Bible, theology, and all things related to the Christian faith.
In this episode of We Are Vineyard, Jay chats with Matthew Bates about growing up in a forestry family, the quiet faith of his mother, and the people who invested in his early life. Matthew talks about transitioning from a physics degree to theology, how he found himself studying greek simply out of personal interest, and the writers and theologians who shaped his questions and perspective on Jesus and scripture. He gives a summation of the key themes in his writing and shares the components of his books about which he receives positive feedback, and those which receive the most pushback. Finally, Matthew describes some ways a congregation might benefit from reversing the gospel presentation, and why this choice is more than just semantics. Matthew W. Bates (Ph.D., Notre Dame) is Professor of Theology at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. Bates is a Protestant who enjoys the challenge of teaching in a Catholic context. His books include Gospel Allegiance (Brazos, 2019) the award-winning Salvation by Allegiance Alone (Baker Academic, 2017), The Birth of the Trinity (Oxford University Press, 2015), and The Hermeneutics of the Apostolic Proclamation (Baylor University Press, 2012). He also co-founded and co-hosts the popular OnScript podcast. After completing a B.S. in physics from Whitworth University (1999), Bates began a career in electrical engineering. His life took a swerve when he enrolled in a biblical studies program at Regent College in Vancouver, B.C. (M.C.S., 2004, The Biblical Studies Prize). In 2005 Bates began PhD studies in theology at the University of Notre Dame, specializing in Christianity and Judaism in Antiquity (CJA). Upon graduation (2010) he was named the winner of the Shaheen Award in the humanities, the top graduation prize at Notre Dame, competitive across all disciplines. In 2011 Bates accepted his current academic post. Bates enjoys hiking, baseball, and chasing around his seven children. What does it mean to have faith in Jesus? If the gospel is more centered on Jesus' kingship (as we've explored on our previous two episodes) perhaps Christian faith looks more like allegiance. Matthew Bates, Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University, joins us to discuss the relationship between the gospel, salvation, faith, obedience, and grace. In this episode, Ryan offers Landon three approaches to the word that have helped him frame the discussion, from philosopher Kierkegaard's palate-cleansing “virtue of the absurd”, to theologian Tillich's “centered act of personality," and finally biblical scholar Matthew Bates' “allegiance”.Useful references from the discussion: Søren Kierkegaard - was a Danish theologian, philosopher, poet, social critic, and religious author who is widely considered to be the first existentialist philosopherPaul Johannes Tillich - was a German-American Christian existentialist philosopher and Lutheran Protestant theologian who is widely regarded as one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth centuryMatthew Bates - is Associate Professor of Theology at Quincy University.
