On today's episode we had the privilege of being joined by friend to many Rob Ackerman. Rob, his wife Shannon and their children have been a part of Desert Springs for over 15 years. Rob was raised in rural Minnesota and put his faith in Jesus in elementary school when a friend invited him to AWANA. He attended the University of North Dakota where he met his wife, Shannon. It was fun to hear Rob's side of the story as we got to hear Shannon share back in June (we've linked her story below). It was also in college where Rob began to really observe and learn from other's faith journeys. This became something important to Rob as he entered the different phases of his life. Rob and Shannon married and began Rob's army career with seven years of active duty. He couldn't get away from his love for flying and he still flies helicopters to this day. As Rob grew older, he began to recognize the importance of consistency with Christ and cultivating a steady faith. This is where most of Rob and Sarah's conversation stays, talking through that steadiness and consistency in walking with Christ. Whether it's marriage, raising kids, a mid-life crisis or relationship with God, it's always worth it to just show up and try with a genuine spirit. Rob has so much wisdom to share and we would encourage you to take this as a free advice session!Shannon Ackerman's story - https://open.spotify.com/episode/4AUrp22G810TpCtxrY4AEV?si=49565d2ee6cf418fMen in Midlife Crisis by Jim Conway - https://www.amazon.com/Men-Midlife-Crisis-Jim-Conway/dp/1564766985/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3NVYN1JRE79GK&keywords=men+in+midlife+crisis&qid=1699379773&sprefix=men+i%2Caps%2C3193&sr=8-1If you're interested, you can read about Chris McCandless aka Alexander Supertramp - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_McCandlessWould you please subscribe and leave us a review? Homer G Phillips Hospital, belongs to the Ville neighborhood and to the African American community, its history and its culture in StLouis mo. It was my privilege and perhaps even my duty ,to have this discussion with the leadership of the Homer G Phillips Nurses Alumni Association, concerning their lawsuit against developer Paul McKee, for copyright infringement. ——— I was joined in studio by Yvonne Jones, President of HGP Nurses Association and Zenobia Thompson, Vice Chairman and a long time healthcare activist l, in the StLouis metro area. ——— Our conversation focused on McKee's misappropriation, of the historic black hospital's name, from the African American community for his, for profit 3 bed healthcare facility located near downtown StLouis. ——— It was hard for me to be the objective host, for this discussion, given my history with Homer G Phillis Hospital. ——— I was born there, my son Christian Thompson ,was born there, my late mother, Mrs Emma Lou Thompson, a LPN worked there for some 40 years and was dedicated to Homer G Phillips and her many healthcare colleagues, while working the 11p to 7am shift for over 4 decades. ——— Homer G Phillips Hospital, was opened in 1937 on Whittier ave. in the Ville neighborhood, around the corner from the Sumner High School, Antioch Baptist Church and the iconic Annie Malone Children's Home. —— The hospital gained national recognition for its excellent training of black physicians, nurses and surgeons, who were denied access to interning at hospitals, throughout the south during that time period. ——— Homer G Phillips Hospital, was ranked in the top ten public hospitals, across the nation, while training medical students, from across the globe. Homer G Phillips was closed in 1979, by former mayor Jim Conway an unforgivable act, that caused him to be a one term mayor, as Congressman Bill Clay Sr., had promised him he would be, if he indeed closed Homer G Phillips Hospital.------ The copyright lawsuit, brought by the Homer G Phillips Nurses Alumni Association, against Paul McKee, was filed in 2022 and is scheduled to be heard, in January 2024. —— Ours is a passionate conversation that you need to hear, it's our black history, our culture and legacy that's once again being threatened. ——— The Homer G Phillips Nurses Association, needs our support. A GoFundMe account has been established, to support this lawsuit. Please visit Fundraiser by the Change The Name Coalition. ———

Jim Conway joins me on episode 55.Jim is an Australian harmonica player who rose to fame at the age of 19 in the jug band: The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, with the first two albums from the band receiving gold record status. But it wasn't long before he felt the music calling him again and he joined The Backsliders, a blues band which he was a member of for seventeen years. He then went on to form a band under his own name, Jim Conway's Big Wheel. As well as some notable recordings as a session musician, including some film work, Jim also enjoyed the the great honour of touring Australia with Brownie McGhee in the late 1980s. In a trench in Marseille the loyalty of three Indian soldiers is tested when the legendary Madame Cama asks them to surrender for the good of the motherland. Will carrying on the fight really prove their loyalty to the crown? Or is the battle for Indian independence the real fight that should be had? This podcast is one of five short plays produced in response to documents held at The National Archives relating to the experiences of people from South Asia at the time of the First World War. Three Indian soldiers recover at the iconic Brighton Pavilion hospital. Every detail is provided for but something isn't quite right. The soldiers question why the plentiful food and high quality care is served in the shadow of guards and bars across windows. Will they be honoured as heroes as the British had led them to believe, or are they merely prisoners being readied again for war? This podcast is one of five short plays produced in response to documents held at The National Archives relating to the experiences of people from South Asia at the time of the First World War. In Memoriam: James Michael Conway, Funeral Service Auckland, New Zealand, Sept. 20, 2017 This video was posted by the family of Jim Conway, my dear cousin who died too early in life. An amazing man, husband, father, friend, cousin, we miss him dearly. (some is in the local language of Jim's home, the island of Tuvalu in the South Pacific, most is in English)
STEREO AUDIO ORIGINAL mp3 "I MET MY SWEETIE ON TAHITI" is an original song & recording by "Loose Bruce" Kerr. It's an homage to his parents who taught him his first instrument (ukelele, by his Dad, Ken), songs from their youth in the 1920's (Ken & Opal, both), and, re his Dad's love for both dixieland jazz and barbershop quartet which he passed on to Bruce. This is Bruce playing out his Tin Pan Alley songwriter wish. Bruce sings each harmony and plays each instrument one at a time (a digital unit allows him to affect horns & strings he can't play). It's a 1-man band (across time). ;) Bruce took 20 years off from his legal career to write & perform music, sometimes solo, sometimes in a duo or the band, "Spud City-Music With a Peel" (Mass., VT) with his hometown buddy, Steve Hoeft. As a solo, he opened for "Weird Al" Yankovic. Then he resumed being an attorney, now working for Oracle in Northern California's Silicon Valley. Bruce dedicates this song to his cousin, Jim Conway, who moved to the South Pacific island of Tuvalu and eventually met his sweetie, Nese Ituaso, and married her up real good. email: BKerrLaw@aol.com
WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: April 7, 2011 Featuring: James Conway, MS, FACHE, Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement; Adjunct Faculty, Harvard School of Public Health Anthony A. Armada, FACHE, President, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Advocate Lutheran General Children’s Hospital Michael A. Fisher, President and CEO, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) Uma R. Kotagal, MD, MBBS, MSc, Senior Vice President, Quality, Safety and Transformation, CCHMC; Executive Director, James M. Anderson Center for Health Systems Excellence Michelle Hoppes, RN, MS, President, American Society for Healthcare Risk Management; Senior Vice President and National Director for Healthcare Risk Management and Patient Safety, Sedgwick Claims Management Services When IHI published a white paper last year written by Jim Conway and three colleagues, there was little doubt that health care organizations were seeking guidance on the best and most transparent ways to prepare for and respond to serious medical crises. However, the September 2010 publication of Respectful Management of Serious Clinical Adverse Events, hit a nerve (in the best sense) that even the authors couldn’t have predicted: there have been thousands of downloads of the white paper from IHI.org, and dozens of organizations and health care providers have been eager to spread its guiding content far and wide. Not only that, the compilation of tools and best practices — from having a plan ready to be implemented, to enacting the plan, to ensuring that everyone affected has what they need, when they need it — wound up serving as a resource for several hospitals facing unfortunate clinical occurrences. Leaders from two of the affected hospitals — Michael Fisher and Uma Kotagal from Cincinnati Children’s and Tony Armada from Advocate Lutheran — join Jim Conway to discuss what they learned, in real time, about the critical importance of making crisis management a part of every organization’s culture of quality and safety. Among other things, patient- and family-centeredness must anticipate those moments “when things go wrong.” Michelle Hoppes also joins the program to offer her perspective and that of the changing world of hospital risk management to align with a respectful response to serious adverse events.
