This week's Chit Chat Wednesday is a comedy deep dive with the hilarious and well-traveled Turner Sparks! Before becoming a full-time comedian, Turner spent over a decade in China, where he not only performed stand-up but also ran his own Mister Softee ice cream business in Suzhou. (Yes, really—stand-up and soft serve!) He shares how selling ice cream in China prepared him for the comedy hustle and the unexpected lessons he learned from running a business abroad.Jared, fresh off his own trip to Australia and New Zealand, picks Turner's brain on what it's really like to perform for international audiences—how American comedy translates abroad, the wild misconceptions people have, and the surprising moments that come with being a comedian on the road. They also reminisce about the early days of podcasting (remember downloading episodes in chunks?), the unique connection between podcasters and their listeners, and why certain shows feel like comfort food for the brain. Plus, Turner shares his experience as a regular guest on an Auckland radio show, explaining American culture to Kiwis, and launching his own podcast, Black and White Advice. It's a fun, globetrotting conversation filled with laughs, insights, and some unexpected detours—including how an ice cream truck in China led Turner to a career in comedy.

The Toby Gribben Show

Melanie Anne Safka-Schekeryk, professionally known as Melanie or Melanie Safka, is an American singer-songwriter. She is best known for the 1971–72 global hit "Brand New Key", her cover of "Ruby Tuesday", her composition "What Have They Done to My Song Ma", and her 1970 international breakthrough hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" (inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival). In the 1960s, Melanie started performing at The Inkwell, a coffee house in the West End section of Long Branch, New Jersey. After high school, her parents insisted that she go to college, so she studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, where she began singing in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village, such as The Bitter End and signed her first recording contract.Initially signed to Columbia Records in the United States, Melanie released two singles on the label. Subsequently, she signed with Buddah Records and first found chart success in Europe in 1969 with "Bobo's Party" which reached No. 1 in France. Melanie's popularity in Europe resulted in performances on European television programs, such as Beat-Club in West Germany. Her debut album received positive reviews from Billboard, which heralded her voice as "wise beyond her years. Her non-conformist approach to the selections on this LP make her a new talent to be reckoned with."Later in 1969, Melanie had a hit in the Netherlands with "Beautiful People". She was one of only three solo women who performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the inspiration for her first hit song, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", apparently arose from the Woodstock audience lighting candles during her set (although most of the "candles" were actually matches or lighters). The recording became a hit in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States in 1970. The B-side of the single featured Melanie's spoken-word track "Candles in the Rain". "Lay Down" became Melanie's first top ten hit in America, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard singles chart and achieving worldwide success. Later hits included "Peace Will Come (According To Plan)" and a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday".In 1970, Melanie was the only artist to ignore the court injunction banning the Powder Ridge Rock Festival scheduled to be held on July 31, August 1 and 2, 1970. She played for the crowd on a homemade stage powered by Mister Softee trucks. Shortly following this performance, she played at the Strawberry Fields Festival held from August 7 to 9, 1970, at Mosport Park, Ontario. She also performed at the Isle of Wight Festival held between August 26 and 30, 1970, at Afton Down, where she was introduced by Keith Moon and received four standing ovations (she also appeared at the 2010 Isle of Wight festival). She was also the artist who sang to herald in the summer solstice at Glastonbury Fayre (later the Glastonbury Festival) in England, in June 1971. She performed again at Glastonbury in 2011, the 40th anniversary of the original festival.Melanie left Buddah Records when they insisted that she produce albums on demand. In 1971, she formed her own label, Neighborhood Records, with Peter Schekeryk who was also her producer and husband. She had her biggest American hit on the Neighborhood label, the novelty-sounding 1972 number one "Brand New Key" (often referred to as "The Roller Skate Song"). "Brand New Key" sold over three million copies worldwide and was featured in the 1997 movie Boogie Nights. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Phil and Jake are joined by returning guest "Million Dollar" Matt Hock (from Space Cadet & The Explosion) to rank ice cream trucks and the New York City borough of Brooklyn on the List of Every Damn Thing.Get Space Cadet's record “Lion On A Leash” on Wiretap Records, listen to them on Spotify, and follow them on Instagram (@space_cadet_band). Maybe even see them play live.If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Here's the classic Eddie Murphy ice cream truck bit that taught us everything we know. Mister Softee is a soft-serve truck that drives around in the mid-Atlantic states. While trying to explain the business benefits of soft-serve, Phil refers to the movie The Founder, which is about McDonalds. One of the central issues in the movie is the original founders of McDonalds want to have real ice cream shakes but storing ice cream is very expensive due to the refrigeration. Soft serve ice cream is much cheaper because it doesn't need to be refrigerated while in transit or storage. A meager amount of research leads us to the stance that trucks (aka lorries) are different from vans. The racist version of “Turkey in the Straw” that Phil refers to was recorded in 1916, just a few years before Harry Burt created the first ice cream truck. So it follows that this version may be the one people knew in the early days of ice cream truckin'. Does sound travel further in warmer weather? There are scientists who will say it travels faster in the summer heat and humidity, but that it travels further in the winter. We think it's mostly due to having windows open in the summer. Does ice cream sell better on rainy days? This is some purely anecdotal BS that Phil heard in grade school from a guy who worked at an ice cream shop, and has accepted as the truth. He has no documented proof for this. He looked online but has found nothing that backs it up. When Jake talks about the melody from “Ice Cream Man” by Dru Down (featuring Luniz), he's talking about the main part of the song, not the intro featuring “Pop Goes the Weasel”. A few years after this song came out, Master P released a song by the same name (with a similar intro), but it's not nearly as catchy. Another song by a Bay Area rapper apparently played by some ice cream trucks is “Ice Cream” by Andre Nikatina, which is pretty much just a “Turkey In the Straw” remix. Here's the scene from Friday where the ice cream truck is used as a front for a drug dealer. Western Beef is a mid-Atlantic supermarket chain whose mascot is a cactus in a cowboy hat. Their old CEO had mafia ties. The location Phil was thinking about is at 44 Empire Blvd by the park. Fud is a brand of hot dogs from Mexico. Fuddhism is a restaurant with a goofy name in Truckee, CA. Junior's Cheesecake is a place where Matt likes to urinate. Christie's Jamaican Patties is now closed. It's described as beloved in the linked article so you know it wasn't just Phil that liked it. Taqueria Diana in Williamsburg is an outstanding place to get Mexican food (and mezcal). If you're hungry and in Brooklyn, go there. In fact, if you're anywhere in New York City, go there. The Williamsburg location is the best. Here's the EDT episode featuring Efrem Schulz where he helped us rank “Weird Al” Yankovic over Bruce Springsteen. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

Does the combination of your kids' squabbling, the repeated clinking of your spouse's cereal spoon, and the Mister Softee jingle send you into a rage-panic? You are not alone. Farrah had this to say on Facebook: Someone talk to me about PARENTAL sensory overload. We have 6 kiddos ages 5-12. I have found that the older I get (or maybe the older they get?) the noise level is less and less tolerable to me. I want to enjoy being around my kids they way I used to, but I find myself simply overwhelmed with the noise. Has anyone else dealt with this or something similar? Any suggestions on dealing with this sensory overload so I can get back to enjoying the company of my kids/ family? Some people really are more sensitive to noise. Dr. Elaine Aron describes "highly sensitive people" and their reactions to auditory input this way: "Highly sensitive persons process information more thoroughly, are more easily stimulated, are more aware of subtle stimuli, are more empathic, and have higher emotional reactivity." In other words, we don't habituate to noise exposure like other people do. Our highly attuned senses are more affected by our environments. And when our nervous systems are already amped up for other reasons— can you think of anything you might have been feeling anxious about over the last year?!– the auditory information on the way to the brain becomes augmented, and it can feel like too much to bear. Amy's a fellow noise-intolerant, and in this episode she goes through the three-step process of control the noise if you can't do that, control your location if you can't do that... time for an intentional reset. This week we're continuing our exploration of the 1950s in both literature and popular culture. And you can't talk about the 50s without talking about science fiction. We checked out three stories by Isaac Asimov--including one, "The Last Question"--that he would later describe as his favorite. Regular listeners know that Mike tends to not like science fiction all that much, so this week provides a good test: can he be swayed by one of its best practitioners? In the second half of the show, we move on from science fiction to tell the story of Grace Metalious, author of the best-selling--and scandalous!--novel Peyton Place, which came out in 1956, sold tons of copies, and angered nearly everyone in Metalious's small New Hampshire town. We talk about the critical response to her book, and why it might be getting a reappraisal, all these years later. Plus, all kinds of other 1956 goodness, including: Mister Softee! Jello shots! Ant farms! And rock and roll!

This week on Bag Ladiez we’re talking about the police shooting of a white woman in Minneapolis, gentrifiers strike again with their petty BS this time trying to come for Mister Softee in Harlem, how the GoT creators got sooo much time to fantasize about a US where slavery still exists in the south, and the Tennessee court offering those incarcerated there a “credit” if they agree to sterilization/ birth control (which is illegal ya’ll). For what’s your baggage we get into procrastination and the paralysis from wanting to be perfect at everything (#trustheprocess). We’re putting in our bag the delightful sounds of Beautiful Chorus and a Sony camera for all your photography needs. Finally, we close out with This week in Self-care and reflect on the recent suicide of Chester Bennington and what we’re doing to take care of ourselves. Thank you for listening and hope to see you on August 5th! https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bag-ladiez-meet-greet-at-harlem-nights-tickets-36275340520?aff=es2 Shooting in Minneapolis: http://bit.ly/2uuKqBv Gentrifiers in Harlem hate joy: http://bit.ly/2v1GoDB GoT Creators have a lot of time on their hands: http://bit.ly/2txeOKc TN judge offers time served for sterilization: http://bit.ly/2v1HTBK Paralysis/Perfection/Procrastination: http://bit.ly/2eJolv6 Beautiful Chorus: https://beautifulchorus.bandcamp.com/ Sony a5100: http://amzn.to/2vUiPJb RIP Chester Bennington: http://bit.ly/2uRR9rB Check out my youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQAK8mICaD0V1ZHKfmgL5YA

Turner Sparks met me at my new New York apartment during his visit from Shanghai. We talked about the unique challenge he's faced opening up a Mister Softee franchise in China. It's kind of crazy how much different business is there than here.
