In Episode 2 of the CEMMT Sales Series, Fred Copestake and James Michael challenge one of the most persistent stereotypes in sales: that success comes from being loud, charismatic, and constantly talking. Focusing on technical and specialist industries such as construction, engineering, manufacturing, and logistics, this episode explores why many highly capable professionals feel uncomfortable with selling — and why that discomfort is often rooted in outdated assumptions about what sales really is. In this episode, we explore: Where the "gift of the gab" stereotype comes from — and why it no longer applies Why technical experts are often pushed into sales roles without the right preparation How sales gained a reputation for manipulation and performance What thousands of psychometric assessments reveal about top B2B sales performers Why extroverts are not automatically better at selling The rise of the ambivert in modern, complex sales environments The role of listening, silence, and thoughtful questioning in buyer-led conversations Key insight Modern sales doesn't reward the loudest voice in the room. The most effective salespeople today are those who can switch modes — talking when it adds value, listening when it matters more, and creating space for buyers to think clearly. The "gift of the gab" isn't a strength in complex B2B sales. Balance is. Why this matters today Buyers now arrive informed, cautious, and often overwhelmed by choice and internal complexity. What they need isn't persuasion. They need someone who can help them make sense of decisions, navigate stakeholders, and move forward with confidence. That requires empathy, restraint, and adaptability - not performance. About the guests Fred Copestake Founder of Brindis and author of Selling Through Partnering Skills, Hybrid Selling, and Ethical Selling. Fred has worked with over 10,000 salespeople across 38 countries, helping organisations move away from outdated sales behaviours and towards collaborative, ethical selling. James Michael Founder of Justified Talent, James specialises in recruiting and assessing first-time sales hires. With a background in behavioural psychology, he uses data-led psychometric assessment to identify what truly predicts success in modern B2B sales — beyond stereotypes and assumptions. In this opening episode of a 5 part mini series of Sales Today, we do things a little differently. Instead of the usual host-led interview, Fred Copestake is in the hot seat as James Michael turns the tables and leads the conversation. Chatting from opposite sides of the world – Fred in the UK and James in Australia – the discussion reflects a wider theme of this episode: sales has been turned upside down. Together, they explore how selling has evolved from persuasion, pressure, and performance theatre into something far more human, ethical, and buyer-led. In this episode, they cover: Why traditional, manipulative sales tactics no longer work in modern B2B selling How sales used to be treated as a "dark art" – and why that thinking causes problems today Fred's accidental route into sales and what 25 years across 38 countries has taught him The shift from "telling and pitching" to sense-making and clarity-building Why today's buyers often know more than the salesperson before the first meeting What it really means to sell collaboratively rather than persuasively How ethics, integrity, and conscience now play a critical role in long-term sales success Key takeaway Modern sales is no longer about control, clever techniques, or forcing outcomes. It's about helping buyers make sense of complexity, supporting better decisions, and creating value through conversation – not pressure. When selling is done well today, everyone wins: the buyer, the business, and the salesperson themselves. About the guests Fred Copestake is the founder of Brindis, a sales training consultancy. With over 25 years' experience, he has worked in 38 countries, supported more than 10,000 salespeople, and authored three books: Selling Through Partnering Skills Hybrid Selling Ethical Selling James Michael is the founder of Justified Talent, a recruitment business specialising in helping small businesses make their first sales hire. With a background in behavioural psychology, James takes a radically different approach to recruitment – focusing on assessment and behaviour rather than CVs and interviews. Music Studio Startup: Helping music teachers thrive as entrepreneurs
If you've ever wondered whether the music you compose or arrange for your students could become more than a creative outlet—maybe even a second income stream—this episode is for you. My guest, James Michael Stevens, is a composer and college music dean who has steadily built something quite remarkable: a catalog of thousands of piano and organ pieces, all self-published online, that reaches players around the world. What I love most about his story isn't just the scale of what he's created—it's how he's done it. His process is simple, consistent, and completely self-driven, and it offers a model for any creative teacher who wants to turn small, steady efforts into something substantial. In our conversation, James shares how he got started, what keeps him motivated, and the systems he uses to sustain that level of creative output year after year. Whether you write music, design resources, or just have an idea you've been meaning to follow through on, this episode is full of practical wisdom for anyone building something one step at a time. Here's my conversation with James. A full transcript and resources from this episode can be found at MusicStudioStartup.com/episode174. In this episode, Therese Markow and Dr. James Michael Thomas discuss Critical Race Theory (CRT). Dr. Thomas explains CRT as a framework for understanding persistent racism post-Civil Rights Era, emphasizing its structural presence in law, education, and urban planning. He highlights the misconceptions around CRT, noting it's often misrepresented in legislative efforts to ban it. Dr. Thomas also discusses systemic racism, implicit vs. explicit racism, and the concept of white privilege. He shares personal anecdotes and research on white Southerners' awareness of racial advantages, and critiques legislative attempts to control education and maintain inequality. Key Takeaways: Critical Race Theory is a framework for understanding how racism persisted and continues to persist in the post-Civil Rights Era. We distinguish systemic racism from personal acts of prejudice, racist attitudes, or racist actions because those individual attitudes and actions do not have the same effect on the distribution of power, resources, and opportunity. Many who object to teaching American history, good and bad, often are in power and do not want to discuss the unequal arrangements that have resulted from the racism and inequality that have shaped this country and present-day conditions, nor do they want to have their source of power questioned. Race has no basis in biology; race is a social construction. "When Critical Race theorists consider the idea of racial progress, what they're trying to do is make distinctions between changes in law and then how that law is enforced or not enforced, and if it is enforced, often unevenly and with very mixed results." — Dr. James Michael Thomas Episode References: ‘It's a complicated time to be a white Southerner' - and their views on race reflect that: https://theconversation.com/its-a-complicated-time-to-be-a-white-southerner-and-their-views-on-race-reflect-that-261454 Connect with Dr. James Michael Thomas: Professional Bio: https://olemiss.edu/profiles/jmthoma4.php Books: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B00SJPHVD2/allbooks LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/james-thomas-63952728 Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. In 1982, the Jane Fonda Workout became the best-selling home video of all time. Over decades, it and its 22 follow ups would spawn a fitness empire, sell more than 17 million copies, and transform Fonda into a leg-warmer-clad exercise guru. And 40 years after its initial release, when the COVID pandemic hit, the workout had a moment yet again. People began doing it alone and on Zoom, tweeting about it, writing about it. So when Jane Fonda agreed to talk to us, we set out to do an episode about it—but it did not go as planned. On Part 1 of a special two-part Decoder Ring, originally released in 2020, we explore the decades-long relationship of Jane Fonda and Leni Cazden, a fraught friendship that birthed the VHS workout that changed the world. It's a story of creation, fame, forgiveness, trauma, betrayal, survival, politics, and exercise. You'll hear from Jane Fonda and Leni Cazden, the brain behind the workout, and Shelly McKenzie, author of Getting Physical: The Rise of Fitness Culture in America. In two weeks we'll return with Part 2: the nitty gritty story of the bestselling VHS tape of all time. This episode was written by Willa Paskin. It was edited and produced by Benjamin Frisch. We had research assistance from Cleo Levin. Decoder Ring is produced by Katie Shepherd, Max Freedman, and Evan Chung, our supervising producer. Merritt Jacob is Senior Technical Director. California's 1849 gold rush triggered creation of the “instant city” of San Francisco as a to base exploit the rich natural resources of the American West. City of Wood: San Francisco and the Architecture of the Redwood Lumber Industry (University of Texas Press, 2024) examines how capitalists and workers logged the state's vast redwood forests to create the financial capital and construction materials needed to build the regional metropolis of San Francisco. Architectural historian Dr. James Michael Buckley investigates the remote forest and its urban core as two poles of a regional “city.” This city consisted of a far-reaching network of spaces, produced as company owners and workers arrayed men and machines to extract resources and create human commodities from the region's rich natural environment. Combining labor, urban, industrial, and social history, City of Wood employs a variety of sources—including contemporary newspaper articles, novels, and photographs—to explore the architectural landscape of lumber, from backwoods logging camps and company towns in the woods to busy lumber docks and the homes of workers and owners in San Francisco. By imagining the redwood lumber industry as a single community spread across multiple sites—a “City of Wood”—Dr. Buckley demonstrates how capitalist resource extraction links different places along the production value chain. The result is a paradigm shift in architectural history that focuses not just on the evolution of individual building design across time, but also on economic connections that link the center and periphery across space. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Area/TopicExploration, Whales, Indigenous CommunitiesJames Michael DorseyAuthor & ExplorerJames Michael Dorsey is an award-winning author, explorer, and lecturer who has spent three decades researching remote tribal cultures in fifty-nine countries. His personal narratives give a small voice to those who otherwise would vanish from the earth with few people ever knowing they existed. His separate passion is working as a cetacean naturalist on whale boats in California and Mexico, a parallel career he has pursued for three decades. These combined journeys have resulted in over 800 published essays and articles and four books. He returns annually to lecture about gray whales in the sanctuary lagoon of San Ignacio in Baja, Mexico, where he was the resident naturalist for twenty-two seasons. His latest book “The Lagoon,”is a definitive study of gray whales and the indigenous peoples of Baja where he was resident naturalist for 22 years. He is a former contributing editor at Transitions Abroad and has written for United Airlines, The Christian Science Monitor, Lonely Planet, Perceptive Travel, California Literary Review, Colliers, Los Angeles Times, BBC Wildlife, BBC Travel, Geo Ex, Wanderlust, and Natural History, plus several African magazines. He is a member of the American Cetacean Society, a fellow of the Explorer's Club, and member emeritus of the Adventurer's Club.https://www.jamesmichaeldorsey.com/summaryIn this episode of the Big World Made Small podcast, Jason Elkins interviews renowned explorer and author James Michael Dorsey. They discuss Dorsey's journey from a mail carrier to an adventure traveler, his experiences with indigenous cultures, and the unique relationship between humans and whales in Baja. Dorsey shares captivating stories from his travels, including a harrowing encounter with a baboon in Tanzania and the challenges of leading group tours. The conversation also touches on the impact of tourism on indigenous communities and the importance of cultural preservation.takeawaysJames Dorsey's journey into exploration began with a kayaking trip in British Columbia.Dorsey has spent decades documenting vanishing tribal cultures in Africa and Asia. The connection between whales and indigenous cultures is profound and intertwined.Traveling with a partner can enhance the adventure experience, but it also presents challenges.Dorsey's experiences in Ethiopia included a dangerous volcano expedition that resulted in a broken leg.Whale watching in Baja is unique because the whales actively seek human contact. The ethics of whale watching are complex, with differing opinions on human interaction with wildlife.Dorsey leads tours to Baja, but prefers to engage with participants rather than manage logistics.Cultural immersion is key to understanding and respecting indigenous societies.Dorsey is concerned about the over-reliance of indigenous communities on tourism for survival.
