Episode highlights Joe and Liz provide a recap of topics covered at the Dec. 5 Parent Engage 360 event held at Coon Rapids High School. Joe talks about the importance of human connection and the addictive nature of cell phones and social media targeting today's youth. Joe shared resources, including two helpful exercises families can engage with their children at home to help create healthy habits with technology. The Parent Engage 360 Podcast aims to provide parents and guardians with knowledge from experts in chemical health, mental health, internet safety and more, as well as the tools needed to support their children. Joe Beckman is a school speaker on a mission to reclaim human connection from our increasingly tech-consumed world. He's spoken at over 1000 schools and developed resources to help students, teachers and parents rediscover the lost, vital component of human connection. His infectious enthusiasm, storytelling ability and vulnerability has positively impacted over 1 million people worldwide. He's also one of the best speakers I've ever seen (I finished a distant runner-up to Joe at a speaking contest once). He's written a book called “Just Look Up - 5 life-saving phrases every human needs to hear” for educators, teachers, parents and administrators. He's on The YES Effect show to talk about his optimism that our screen-obsessed world can indeed be encouraged to remember the importance of human connection for growth, prosperity and health. In this episode, you'll learn: How Joe gets kids to smile, laugh and engage at his school speaking engagements How he developed a “Netflix for social-emotional learning” video resource Why human connection is so important for students to have in their lives The devastating problems that result without human connection How Joe parlayed a theatre background into helping students and teachers Why we should be talking openly about the times we screw up Why the health implications of screen time mirror those of smoking Why Joe is so hopeful that the world might slowly wean itself off screens in the future Quotables: “It's imperative we remind ourselves where the juice in life is and that's in relationships.” “Any experience you get looking down at a screen vs looking up and being with and around people that you love and help you grow…that can only be done without a screen and in real time with human beings.” “Continue to pursue the things that fire you up and give passion in your heart. When you can, it makes you a better person, parent, spouse, partner and human.” Links mentioned in this episode: “Just Look Up” book Till360 Consulting Castle Learning for Teachers Join The YES Effect Inner Circle Facebook Group for a behind the scenes experience about what it means to Believe, Belong and Become! Reclaiming human connection. That’s the mission of today’s guest, Joe Beckman, who visits educational settings around the world. It's Joe’s feeling that our schools are experiencing an unprecedented shift and that student loneliness is at an all-time high while self-worth and feelings of belonging are at all-time lows. Joe feels the culprit is lack of human connection, and I'm pretty sure I agree with him. And I would say, not just connection with each other, but with ourselves. Among the things that really stood out to me from this conversation with Joe were: Energy vs. talent. Joe tells a really interesting story about where he was first introduced to the idea of how important energy is, how people want to be around others with good energy. The trap of trying to talk your way to a solution (instead of just listening). “Go big with this moment.” When Joe described the moment when he said, “5-year-old Joe met 18-year-old Joe,” I immediately reflected back on times when I felt like I had rediscovered and reconnected with an authentic part of myself that I had perhaps forgotten or lost sight of. It is an electric, visceral experience when you reconnect with who you really are. I hope Joe’s story helps you recall times when that’s happened for you, as it did for me. © 2018 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises

Hello 2016! Re-entry from vacation is always a little bumpy. I will admit, I got quite used to busting into appetizers and a bottle of wine at about 4pm (ok, 3) each day - so I'm doubling down on my smoothie/green intake this week hoping to neutralize pretty much everything. Ha! I'm still not quite done with reflecting and revisiting 2015. I couldn't help but to do one more round-up of 2015 - my favorite part of the show each week: the This Moved Me Moments! I have a hard time picking "favorites" of most anything. But, I wanted to recognize some of the most memorable This Moved Me Moments from 2015. I edited together some of the best audio stories that were shared on the show - highlights from Lindsey O'Connor's episode, Kate O'Reilly's episode, and Joe Beckman's episode - among a few others (you can listen here). But I also wanted to gather together some of the other memorable pieces here on the blog, that are not easily shared by audio. Check the blog (www.thismovedme.com) for the complete round-up!
Today on the show I have with me a long-time friend of mine, Joe Beckman. Joe is a “youth motivator” - a speaker to kids, helping them live out the greatness that exists within each of them. I’ve had the privilege of working with Joe for the last 10 years - working alongside him, coaching him, laughing with him, learning from him. He has a HUGE heart for kids, is so passionate about connecting with them and making a difference in their lives… so I’m thrilled he could join us on the show to talk about his approach as a speaker.
