In this episode of Wake Up, Look Up, Pastor Zach challenges listeners to rethink the role politics plays in their lives, arguing that it should never become an all-consuming identity. Drawing from a Wall Street Journal op-ed and Paul's teaching in 1 Corinthians 13, he emphasizes that being “right” means nothing if it comes at the expense of love. The episode calls Christians to hold political convictions with humility, prioritize relationships and community, and be known first for love rather than party allegiance.Have an article you'd like Pastor Zach to discuss? In this message, we continue our Eden: Why Are We Here? series by exploring Genesis 9:8 to 17, the passage that introduces what Scripture calls the Noahic Covenant. Many of us know the flood narrative, but this text invites us to pause and consider what God was communicating after the flood and why the sign He chose still matters today. When God places His bow in the clouds, He is doing far more than giving the world a beautiful phenomenon. In the ancient world, a bow was a weapon of war. In Genesis 9, God deliberately hangs His bow in the sky as a declaration of mercy. It is a public, universal promise that He will never again judge the earth by flood, not because humanity suddenly became righteous, but because God is gracious, faithful, and committed to sustaining life. This covenant speaks not only to God's restraint after judgment, but also to hearts that wrestle with fear: fear of failure, fear of judgment, and fear that God may be done with them. In this passage, we see how God's mercy meets people personally and how His promises remain firm even when people fall.My prayer is that this teaching helps us see God's faithfulness more clearly and that we never look at the bow in the sky the same way again.Joseph Collier

Tracy breaks down the overfunctioning–underfunctioning cycle, why “I cant do anything right” is a shutdown that blocks connection, and how repair (not perfection) is what keeps love alive especially when screens, stress, and exhaustion turn partners into roommates living parallel lives. You'll walk away with language you can use tonight, boundaries that actually work, simple acknowledgement habits, and a clearer picture of what's in your control to shift the dynamic. This episode also includes a powerful glimpse into postpartum vulnerability and the in-law pressures that can begin to fracture a marriage if you don't protect your “we.” Get your copy of I Didn't Sign Up for This here Learn more about Dr. Tracy and all she has to offer here Learn more about your ad choices. Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

With loneliness off the charts for kids in today's world, we can reasonably conclude that more time looking at screens means less time with others. In her new book “the extinction of experience: being human in a disembodied world”, Christine Rosen writes, “A decade ago, a book about how technology is changing us would offer solutions for a more balanced relationship with our devices, such as take a digital Sabbath, avoid multitasking, and put those phones away at the dinner table! These are no longer enough.” Rosen suggests an Amish approach to technology, where we work to cultivate a robust skepticism about each new device and app, even if most of us will not be as strict as the Amish in rejecting them. She writes, “The Amish asked the right questions before embracing something new: how will this impact our community? Is it good for families? Does it support or undermine our values?” Parents, Are you asking these questions as you think about the role technology will play in your family?

There's something exciting and adventurous about all the potential possibilities. But truth is, it's tough to build a meaningful life with one eye on the horizon and one foot out the door. At some point, you need to settle down somewhere. But you just want everything to be perfect. I get that. But—what if the life you're looking for isn't about moving on, but going deeper right where you are? What would happen if you settled into the soil of your current reality & poured your passion into the people, places & problems sitting right in front of you?

FINE is a 4-Letter Word

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 20, 2025 42:56 Transcription Available

Christopher Bylone grew up on a New Jersey family farm where no one was above mucking stalls, and lending a hand wasn't optional. His grandfather, decades ahead of his time, taught him that inclusion wasn't a corporate policy; it was just what decent people did. Those lessons stuck. They carried Christopher from agriculture to analytics to becoming a respected voice in diversity, equity, and inclusion. When his company's diversity metrics stalled, he spoke up, “We have no strategy.” That bold truth redirected his entire career toward DEI leadership. He went on to build a team from zero headcount and zero budget into a million-dollar operation. On paper, he was thriving. But inside? He was the four letter “fine.”Working at Krispy Kreme, he loved the mission but dreaded the grind. Seventy-five percent of his time was spent executing instead of shaping strategy. Then came the layoff. And with it, the uncomfortable truth that “fine” had become his hiding place. That pattern didn't stop at work. After years of insisting he could lose weight on his own, Christopher realized grit wasn't enough. Well-meaning people told him to “just diet harder,” but he made a different choice and underwent bariatric surgery. It was a turning point that forced him to evaluate not only his habits but his relationships as well. Now, 90 pounds lighter with 30 left to go, he's learned that accepting help isn't weakness: it's wisdom. The people you surround yourself with can either hold space for your growth or keep you stuck in the old story. As a lifelong gardener, he'll tell you not everything that looks like a weed needs to be pulled. Sometimes, it just needs to be moved.Through therapy, reflection, and better boundaries, Christopher discovered that true friends don't have to agree with your decisions but they do have to respect them enough not to stand in your way.Christopher's hype song is “Proud” by Heather Small. Smart leaders know trust is the backbone of a thriving workplace, and in today's hybrid whirlwind, it doesn't grow from quarterly updates or the occasional Slack ping. It grows from steady, human communication. Plenty of companies think they're doing great because they host all-staff meetings, keep “open door” policies, and throw the occasional team-building event. Meanwhile, leaders who truly care about culture are choosing better tools. That's where I come in. Forward-thinking organizations bring me in to create internal podcasts that connect people through real stories, honest conversations, and genuine community—your old printed newsletter reinvented for the way people actually work now. If you run, work for, or know a company ready to upgrade communication and strengthen culture, reach out at Lori@ZenRabbit dot com. Because when people feel heard, they engage. When they engage, they perform. And when they perform, the business succeeds beyond projections.

There's heartbreak among former staff of a Whangarei lion park at news that the seven surviving big cats are due to be put down this week. Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary operator Janette Vallance says the park owners, Bolton Equities, made the difficult decision to euthanise the seven lions, saying there was no options left for them. The park is now closed to the public and the property listed for sale. Northland reporter Peter de Graaf has more.

Welcome to Don't Cut Your Own Bangs — the podcast that makes big feelings feel less scary and approaching them feel possible. I'm Danielle Ireland, LCSW, and today's episode is your Stress Reset: Holiday Boundaries and Presence — your one-stop, low-stress recap of my five-part series Put Down the Panic: A Kinder Guide to Stress. Think of this episode like a cozy audio love note — equal parts humor, heart, and a gentle nudge to slow down before the chaos of the season pulls you under. I'm walking you through: - Why exhaustion isn't laziness (it's a signal, not a flaw). - What burnout really looks like — and how to catch it before it pulls you under. - The power of saying "no" kindly (and why that's a gift to everyone). - How to turn down the volume on stress when life gets too loud. - And why your body's signals are the wisest holiday planner you have. Together we'll laugh, breathe deeper, and hopefully feel seen — because no, you're not the only one who's almost cried during family photos or used caffeine as a coping mechanism.

Send us a textStop scrolling past the fight you were born into. We're calling believers to get off the bench, stop chasing empty distractions, and reenter the real war—light against darkness, truth against lies, grace against self-glory. With clear, Scripture-soaked conviction, we tackle the tough claims many avoid: God's absolute sovereignty, the order of grace, mercy, and peace, and the hard news that a stony heart cannot choose Christ until God makes it new. That doesn't kill urgency; it creates it. If the Father elects, the Son redeems, and the Spirit regenerates, then our witness rests on God's power, not our polish, and courage replaces our fear of popularity. We draw a bold line between the trivia that numbs us and the weighty things that transform us. Sports debates, celebrity worship, and status games fade against the cross where Christ died and the empty tomb where He rose. We talk about Romans 9 and Pharaoh's hardened heart, Ezekiel's promise of a new heart, and the comfort of knowing salvation is not a coin toss but a decree of love. We get practical about unity too: correct without condemning, love like a verb, and align on the mission to call sinners to repentance. The church isn't a bunker waiting out headlines; it's the battering ram Jesus promised would topple the gates of hell.We also reframe end-times anxiety with a simpler lens: the true temple is Christ and His body, the Spirit indwells believers now, and tribulation means today's pressure to stay faithful amid temptation and scorn. Life is short, the stakes are high, and the victory is already won. Let that certainty move you to pray for revival, speak the gospel with clarity, and act in love with urgency. If you're ready to trade spectatorship for service, lean in, share this with someone who needs courage, and leave a review so others can find the message. Saying No with Kindness and Calm

The holiday season is here, and with it comes an avalanche of invitations, requests, and expectations. Parties, bake sales, family gatherings, end-of-year deadlines—it's the season of “yes.” And before I know it, my energy tank starts flashing empty. In this final episode of Put Down the Panic: A Kinder Guide to Stress, I wanted to end on one of the most important themes of the entire series: boundaries—and how to say no kindly, clearly, and without guilt. If the word no gets caught in your throat or you find yourself agreeing to things you never actually wanted to do, you're not alone. I've been there too. Saying no can feel like disappointing people or breaking some invisible rule about being “nice.” But I've learned that boundaries aren't about rejection—they're about clarity. They're not a way of shutting people out; they're a way of keeping myself grounded and connected. In this episode, I share why it's so hard to say no, what our early attachment patterns have to do with it, and how we can begin to change that story. Many of us—especially women —were conditioned to be accommodating, pleasing, and available. But constantly saying yes doesn't make us generous; it makes us exhausted. I'll walk you through a few of my favorite tools and gentle language swaps to make “no” feel a little lighter, including: “Thank you for thinking of me, but I can't commit right now.” “I don't have the capacity, but here's another option.” “No, thank you.” (Yes, that's a full sentence!) I also talk about one of my favorite practices: treating boundaries as an act of self-partnership. I imagine my past and future self as teammates. The version of me from three days ago who blocked out time on the calendar, made lunch plans at home, or said no to something that would've drained me—she was taking care of me. And the me right now? I'm doing the same for the future version who'll thank me later. Boundaries aren't punishment; they're protection. And when I honor my energy first, I can show up more fully for the things and people that truly matter. If you've ever felt the pressure to do it all, to say yes to every request, or to overexplain your “no,” I hope this episode feels like permission to breathe again. Saying no with kindness and calm is one of the most loving things we can do—for ourselves and for everyone around us. Stress symptoms you've been brushing off aren't flaws—they're messages. In this Don't Cut Your Own Bangs mini-series - Put Down the Panic: A Kinder Guide to Stress, therapist Danielle Ireland, walks through the quiet ways stress shows up (jaw clenching, gut flutters, broken sleep) and how a few gentle shifts can keep those whispers from turning into burnout—perfect timing as the holidays approach. Here's the heart of it: your body is a messenger, not a problem. “The way your body is responding to stress is not failure—it is information.” You also can't outrun stress—“Suppressed stress doesn't vanish.” High thresholds only delay the crash. The good news? Tiny things work. A one-minute body-scan, a short walk or stretch, and a slow, deep breath can reset more than you think when you do them consistently. Want ideas you can try today? Do a quick head-to-toe scan to notice tension, add a few minutes of gentle movement, and breathe slowly—simple box breathing (4-4-4-4) if that helps. These aren't grand gestures; they're steady, doable practices that add up. Too Loud to Think: Turn Down Burnout Volume

Don't Cut Your Own Bangs

Burnout doesn't just wear you out physically—it scrambles your thoughts, blurs your focus, and leaves you feeling lost in life. Even on days when “nothing big” happened, you can still feel completely drained, overstimulated, and like you're drowning emotionally. In this solo episode of Don't Cut Your Own Bangs, I share a personal story of navigating one of those days when the noise of burnout got way too loud—and the small but powerful shifts that helped me reclaim clarity and calm. This conversation is part of my Put Down the Panic: A Kinder Guide to Stress mini-series, created to help you lower the volume on burnout, quiet the noise, and make space to hear your own voice again. Three Key Takeaways 1. Overstimulation fuels burnout more than we realize. “It's so easy for overstimulation to fuel the burnout we're trying to avoid.” Our brains weren't built for nonstop notifications, interruptions, and mental multitasking. Recognizing overstimulation is the first step toward recovery. 2. Tiny resets create big clarity. “One little notch down in the volume makes it that much easier for you to hear yourself—the truth of your own experience." Even a one-minute pause or a few minutes of “sensory white space” without screens can help you reset and reconnect. 3. Rest and repair are not weaknesses. “The break I gave myself didn't reinvigorate me—it repaired me. And that was exactly what I needed.” Repair days protect you from deeper burnout. They're just as valuable as days when you feel fully energized.
