Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the poet George Herbert (1593-1633) who, according to the French philosopher Simone Weil, wrote ‘the most beautiful poem in the world'. Herbert gave his poems on his relationship with God to a friend, to be published after his death if they offered comfort to any 'dejected pour soul' but otherwise be burned. They became so popular across the range of Christians in the 17th Century that they were printed several times, somehow uniting those who disliked each other but found a common admiration for Herbert; Charles I read them before his execution, as did his enemies. Herbert also wrote poems prolifically and brilliantly in Latin and these he shared during his lifetime both when he worked as orator at Cambridge University and as a parish priest in Bemerton near Salisbury. He went on to influence poets from Coleridge to Heaney and, in parish churches today, congregations regularly sing his poems set to music as hymns. In part 2 of 2 of this conversation, John Drury shares about the importance of retreats and sacred time for rest and rejuvenation. John shares his personal experiences with different forms of retreats, emphasizing the value of eliminating distractions and under-stimulation to foster deeper self-reflection and mindfulness. He introduces practical techniques such as "desert days," quarterly overnight retreats, and shorter, regular practices to incorporate these into the business and personal life of busy individuals. Erik and John also discuss the distinctions between vacations, visitations, and vocations and how expectation of each affects personal energy and relationships. John offers a variety of suggestions for integrating restful practices into everyday life, such as journaling, spiritual friendship, and practicing an "hour on, hour off" method during retreats. They underscore the importance of approaching these practices with an open mind, ready for unexpected insights and personal growth. In part 1 of a 2 part conversation I am thrilled to bring my longtime friend of 25 years Dr. John Drury. John and I share an interest in productivity and the Enneagram, particularly the unique insights of Enneagram fives. In this episode, John and I talk about the profound impact the pandemic has had on our routines and spiritual practices, introducing the concept of a "rule of life" as a way to anchor ourselves with orienting values and stabilizing practices. We explore the balance between over stimulation and under stimulation, drawing rich parallels to ancient desert monasticism and how these dynamics influence our modern lives. John also shares his personal Sabbath practices, revealing how a 24-hour period of rest from work illuminates a path to increased productivity and deeper connections with family. We'll discuss the fluid nature of identifying and living by our values, the importance of intentional under stimulation, and the need for holistic time management that integrates both work and life harmoniously. Have you ever been unsure what your calling is? This week, with special host John Drury and guest Mick Veach, have a conversation about Mick's calling to ministry. They discuss how we don't have to always know where we are going but as we move with God, God will direct us. Whether smuggling Bibles, feeding lepers or planting a church among an unreached Islamic nation, Mick Veach's commitment to share the love of God with the lost has taken him to the ends of the earth. Now as a mission-minded pastor and Forge speaker, Mick desires to see God's truth compel others to Great Commission action and to foster healthy local churches that engage in evangelism and discipleship. Transatlantic data sharing is back. The European Union has approved an agreement that restores the ability for businesses to transfer personal information of citizens across the Atlantic easily. Roben Farzad, host of public radio's "Full Disclosure," joins us. And, there's been a recent trend of fans heaving bottles, phones and even cremated remains of their loved ones at artists performing on stage. Social psychology professor John Drury explains why this has been happening more and how it may change how we experience concerts. Then, a fledgling political party in the U.S. called Forward is trying to get candidates on the ballot for the 2024 election. The party was started by former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang and former Republican governor of New Jersey, Christine Todd Whitman. They tell us about the party.

This week on Fresh Text we have something special for Holy Week. We're sharing an interview that John did with the crew over at The Modern Parables Podcast. Regular listeners might recall that back In February of this year John was joined by Isaac Steiner for a fresh look at Matthew 4:1-11. This week Isaac has invited John to his podcast, Modern Parables along with his co-hosts Noah Yearout, and Tyler Sanders. The Modern Parables Podcast is part of The Called Collect network of podcasts presented by students, and professors at Indiana Wesleyan University. You can check out all their shows at thecalledcollective.org (https://www.thecalledcollective.org/) Modern Parables focuses on the ways we can bridge random cultural topics with spiritual insights. Through humor, a degree of seriousness, and the depth of God's Word, this podcast hopes to provide two things for the listener: skills for developing sermon illustrations and free-use sermon illustrations created live on the air. So we hope you enjoy this laid-back conversation and also want to pass along our joy and thanksgiving to each of you as we enter into this Holy Week of 2023. Click here to support the show!
