Dr. Amy Peeler joined us to share about her upcoming class, "Gender and the New Testament" (June 30-July 4). Dr. Peeler is a New Testament scholar who brings years of thoughtful study and personal questions to the conversation around the value of femaleness in Scripture and theology. Starting with an exploration of the role of Mary in Christianity, Amy provides an insightful perspective on God's inclusion of women, an aspect of our faith often forgotten or diminished in Protestant Christianity. We also discussed the maleness of Jesus and the Fatherhood of God and Paul's perspective on women in 1 Timothy 2 and 1 Corinthians 11. Amy's winsome approach to these divisive and charged issues was truly encouraging and inspiring.BioDr. Amy L. Peeler is the Kenneth T. Wessner Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College in Illinois. She earned her MDiv and PhD in Biblical Studies from Princeton Theological Seminary. In addition to her academic role, Dr. Peeler serves as an Associate Priest at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Geneva, Illinois. Her research interests include the Epistle to the Hebrews, ancient rhetoric, the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, Israel's sacrificial system, atonement, and familial language in the New Testament. She has written several books, including Women and the Gender of God (Eerdmans, 2022).Regent College Podcast Thanks for listening. In “Got (Raw) Milk? The Small Family Dairy Farms Behind a Big Controversy,” Gravy producer Bianca Garcia takes listeners to Milky Way Farm, the last dairy in Anderson County, South Carolina, where raw milk sales are keeping the Peeler family afloat. Their neighbors have succumbed to the pressures that have defined a generation of farmers. Between 2003 and 2022, South Carolina—where the state beverage is a glass of cold milk—lost 75 percent of licensed dairy operations. They have found their market in a niche constituency, though the wider public might disapprove. Raw milk is a risky product, often considered a public health risk. Raw milk is unpasteurized, meaning it hasn't been through a sanitizing kill step. Scientists worry that it can make consumers vulnerable to bacterial or viral infection, but raw milk lovers can't get enough of the creamy taste and allegedly healthful properties. This debate is situated in what seems to be a public health emergency. Reports of bird flu infecting dairy cattle leave public health officials worried that drinking raw milk can spread disease. Under the Trump presidency, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has vowed to increase public access to raw milk as a part of his Make America Healthy Again agenda. Raw influencers and “tradwives” promote it endlessly on social media. Through all this noise, it's easy to lose sense of the fact that this is an issue that starts on the farm. In this episode, you will hear from L.D. Peeler, acting patriarch of Milky Way Farm, his daughter, Iris, and son, Davis. Each plays a role on their small family farm, which raises 120 Jersey cows: Davis works on the farm, L.D. manages the finances, and Iris does the public relations. They each have different, but entangled, stories to tell. At Milky Way Farm, we are reminded that, just like any other food, raw milk starts with the land, the animals, and the people that make it possible. Guided by the community's desire for a tasty and safe product, the Peelers have shaped their business to meet this need. Thus, in the face of economic pressures of the dairy industry and cultural pressures around the product, they have risen above—like the cream beneath the lid of their bottled pints. Jim Peeler lives in Hickory, a small city in the foothills of North Carolina. He and his wife Diana have two adult children who live in the western NC mountains and one grandson. Jim is a financial controller for a logistics company. Jim has just passed his first fasting anniversary on February 1, 2025. This year has resulted in a loss of 73 pounds so far, and he plans to start maintaining soon within a range of 140 to 145 pounds. Now 64 years old, Jim has struggled with weight issues at least since the 5th grade of elementary school, at the age of ten. He has lost hundreds of pounds over the years, using various methods, but always gained back to an even higher level once the diet ended. The hope is that intermittent fasting will hold the key to finally losing significant amounts of weight for the last time.Looking back, Jim realizes that over his life, he had reached a tipping point roughly every 10 years, which prompted him tostart a serious weight loss attempt, with numerous attempts in between that never lasted very long. Jim successfully lost in these serious attempts, shedding more and more pounds each time, but the diet rollercoaster led him to heavier weights with each try until he hit a maximum weight of 245 pounds in late 2018. And at only 5 feet, 4 inches he was seriously morbidly obese. Through 2019 and 2020, he successfully reached150 pounds through calorie reduction and walking, but by 2024, he had once again risen to 215 pounds following a job change and the loss of his mother, among other stressful situations. He had heard of intermittent fasting sometimebefore but never seriously considered it until he decided to try it in February 2024. Since then, he has been fasting and is on the path to long-term maintenance thanks to intermittent fasting. What does it mean to experience true freedom in prayer? Drawing from their upbringing and years of ministry experience, Keith and Megan Peeler share how inner healing prayer can unlock freedom that many long for but don't know how to access. In this episode of Called Beyond, Tim connects with The Peelers—former Novo staff members who followed God's call to focus on helping people discover freedom through inner healing prayer. "I was raised in a very conservative Christian home, and I didn't know my identity. I honestly didn't even know I had authority in Jesus' name to address spiritual warfare. And so when I started reading some books that were showing me that the enemy is real and I have the permission by God to deal with it and address it, it changed my life." - Megan Peeler We hope this episode inspires you to pursue deeper freedom in your own life through prayer and encourages you to create welcoming, vulnerable spaces where others can encounter God's presence. ----more---- To learn more about the Peeler's ministry through Everfree or to access the prayer resources on their website, visit https://www.everfree.us/.
KA HANCOCK, a highly successful author from Utah - and a former psychiatric nurse - will join us to discuss her books, including "Dancing On Broken Glass" and "The Duzy House of Mourning", as well as her upcoming release, "Ivy In Stills". FROM HER WEBSITE: "Ka Hancock is the author of the beloved novel DANCING ON BROKEN GLASS and newly released THE DUZY HOUSE OF MOURNING. Always intrigued by the human experience and how people navigate their unique challenges, Hancock began writing stories as a child, and never stopped. She discovered early that humanity is a tangled mystery, and that to understand our fellow travelers, and to thrive in difficult relationships, it helps to acknowledge truth, and then proceed accordingly. To support her writing habit, she became a nurse and settled in the realm of addiction and psychiatric medicine. She finds people-in all their complex and varied lifeforms-completely fascinating. She lives in Utah with her husband. Her four children, who have multiplied at an impressive rate, keep her happily engaged with a whole new generation. So, fun fact about me: I'm a messy writer and I like it that way. I'm super tidy everywhere else in my life, but my office is exactly how I like it. I don't like interruptions or noise, but I have a noisy hubs...who interrupts...a lot. Sigh. I love him. Fun fact number two: I was ten when I wrote my first story. It was about a 4th grade substitute teacher I had while my beloved Mrs. Peeler went off and had a baby. (How could she!) I shocked myself with the degree of bottled up dislike I had for this poor guy, but in all fairness I can still, lo these many moons later, recall his effect on me. I wrote a story about him wherein he ended up dead. Dead! I know! What was wrong with me? And it filled me with such consuming turmoil that my pure little conscience could not take it. I'm not kidding, I could not erase fast enough. When I recovered, I gave the old meany a full-body rash and no fingernails which was infinitely easier to live with (for me, not him). But, oh the power! I was utterly addicted. At ten, I held life (and tormenting skin conditions) on the end of my trusty #2 pencil. I never looked back. I was a writer. A little twisted, obviously, but a writer. Have you ever gone all in on something? Something that means the world to you, but not all that much to anyone else? It's a tricky place to be—that jumping off place into whatever-happens-it's-on-me. I've always found it much easier to hand responsibility to someone else, and blame them when it fails. At least where my books are concerned. That's my comfort zone. My job was writing. It was definitely not the mechanics of publishing, marketing, hustling, and selling myself. I've been quite happy to leave that to agents and editors and publishers and publicists and live my life as the semi-introvert that I imagine myself to be. And that worked out fine until my great agent left for an unturndownable opportunity, and my amazing editor abruptly left Simon & Schuster and Simon & Schuster didn't know what to do with me because I had no editor. So...my novel and I became casualties of an industry peopled by people with bigger fish to fry. What was I going to do. Well… Here's the deal: The Duzy House of Mourning is my fish. So, I got myself to that tricky place... And lived to tell about it. If anyone is interested in my self-publishing journey, I am happy to share. Email me. www.kahancock.com

Welcome back to our podcast! This Advent season, we've been delving into the profound mystery of the incarnation—the incredible truth that Jesus chose to come to us in the flesh. This exploration has been deeply influenced by my studies with the Franciscans, prompting me to reflect on the idea that Jesus would have chosen this path even without the fall. What does this mean for us? We're also taking a closer look at a fascinating intersection of science and faith. Recently, we came across a compelling article on microchimerism—an astonishing phenomenon where cells from a fetus can move across the placenta, creating a lasting connection between mother and child. This discovery opens the door to a theological conversation that resonates with our celebration of the incarnation: What does it imply about the relationships we form and the depth of God's presence with us? To explore these questions, we are excited to welcome the Rev. Dr. Amy Peeler, an Associate Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College and an Associate Rector at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. With her expertise and insights, we'll unpack the implications of being intimately connected through the miracle of life and consider what it means to have a God who desires to walk among us. So, sit back and join us as we journey through these ideas, celebrating the incredible closeness of God with us during this special season.Links: Connect with Rev. Wayne, Sherry, and Mitch Peeler embarked on a unique ministry journey at a Job Corps campus. Job Corps, a program by the Department of Labor, helps young people gain education and vocational training. The Peeler family served students from diverse backgrounds, offering spiritual support and guidance. Their ministry began with small steps but grew through perseverance and faith, impacting not only the students but also the staff and guards. Stories of transformation, like that of a student named Joe, highlight the profound impact of their ministry. The Peeler family's journey challenges us to embrace ministry opportunities, build genuine relationships, and involve our families in serving others.
In this episode of Within the Mist, Gary and GoldieAnn venture into the dense forests of North Carolina to explore the legend of Knobby, the region's most famous Bigfoot. Known for its towering size and elusive nature, Knobby has captivated locals for decades. We'll recount the chilling 2010 encounter of Tim Peeler, a Cleveland County resident, who claims to have come face-to-face with the creature. Armed with only a stick, Peeler describes a creature "9 feet tall, with beautiful yellowish hair" that he frightened away from his property. Heather continues her deep dive into the realm of spiritual warfare with guests Keith and Megan Peeler of Everfree. They explore the profound realities of spiritual oppression, particularly relating to body image and identity issues. Heather emphasizes this isn't about fear, but about empowering truth—through Jesus, that we have authority over these spiritual challenges. Megan Peeler shares personal revelations and the dangers of disassociating from our bodies, a coping mechanism often encouraged by cultural conditioning. Keith Peeler highlights the importance of identity and how the enemy aims to undermine it by sowing lies that weaken our ability to fulfill God-given assignments. The episode also tackles the essence of true identity and our spiritual authority as co-heirs with Christ. Megan reflects on discovering her authority in spiritual warfare, which transformed how she confronts negative thoughts. Heather and the Peelers underscore that intimacy with God isn't just theoretical; it's an experiential journey that reshapes our identity in Him. Expect to dive into a discussion on the profound impact of identity attacks in spiritual warfare, how experiences shape our understanding of God, and ways to invite Jesus into our healing process. The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics sparked outrage when drag queens assembled into a scene reminiscent of the Last Supper. Are Christians right to be offended? Oklahoma is requiring public schools to teach the Bible, but some teachers are resisting. Is this really about education or indoctrination? And Kaitlyn's latest article explains why this election is important, but maybe not an “existential threat.” New Testament scholars, Esau McCaulley and Amy Peeler, discuss their new multi-ethnic Bible commentary “The New Testament in Color” and why we should read Scripture with friends from diverse backgrounds.
