In this episode, Paul Kirby, author of The FUSE Pathway: How to Find and Lead a Fulfilling Life, shares how to identify your core passions, combine them into a unique vision, and build a realistic, evolving plan to pursue them. Drawing from his own experience of designing a robot that paints, Paul explains the FUSE framework—Find, Upgrade, Start, Evolve—and how it can guide anyone toward a life filled with purpose and creativity. In this conversation, we explore:The Concept of Fusion: Paul introduces the idea of “fusion”—combining multiple passions into a single, compelling life vision that lights a fire inside you.The FUSE Framework: We walk through the four-step FUSE process—Find your passion, Upgrade your skills, Start (gradually or boldly), and Evolve as you grow.Self-Discovery Through Journaling: Paul shares a powerful exercise involving “yellow verbs” to uncover consistent, lifelong themes in your behavior and interests.Pursuing Autotelic Goals: We discuss the importance of doing things for internal fulfillment rather than external approval—and how this mindset unlocks deeper purpose.Examples from His Life and Book: Paul tells stories from his journey of building a painting robot and weaving together interests in art, technology, design, and mechanics into one integrated vision.Paul's FUSE model is an encouraging and actionable guide for anyone feeling stuck, scattered, or uncertain about how to bring their passions together into a life that truly fits.Connect with Erik:LinkedIn ThreadsFacebook BlueskyThis Podcast is Powered By:DescriptDescript 101CastmagicEcammPodpageRodecaster ProTop Productivity Books ListMake sure to grab Shortcasts from Beyond The To-Do List by Blinkist. Our show today is looking at how happiness is best shared with those who love us, and how striving for success can lead to a life alone. Catching up on LinkedIn this morning, I discovered a couple of posts that jumped out at me. One was particularly poignant; a tale of a man pouring his life into his business for over 30 years, only to find that his most cherished relationship had dissolved in the process. It's shocking how our relentless pursuit of success can blindside us, leading to an empty seat in life's treasured events. In the entrepreneurial sphere, there is a lot of pressure to succeed, and it can become an incessant drive to create the monumental, something that might bring wealth and recognition. But at what cost? Do you see the point of chasing a six-figure dream if it means losing sight of the people who matter most? The notion of happiness being somewhere 'out there' is all too familiar. Yet, real contentment often blooms from within us, nurtured by gratitude and cherished moments with loved ones. This week, I've taken a breather with family visiting from afar, enjoying shared memories and crafting new ones. It's a reminder that on our deathbeds, no one wishes they'd spent more time working. We need to find balance in life—a core concept in coaching. It's about making time for the meaningful connections in our lives. The renowned Stephen Covey speaks of "sharpening the saw," a metaphor for nurturing our relationships. Just like maintaining a sharp tool, we need to put effort into our connections to ensure they flourish. So, let's make time for those who matter—family, friends, significant others—and create memories that outlast any business triumph. If left unchecked, our work-driven habits can lead to personal and health setbacks. That's why it's crucial to address imbalances and, if needed, seek help. Whether it's through life planning or coaching, the goal is to cherish life and the people around us. Dr. Zorana Ivcevic Pringle is a leading researcher in creativity psychology and author of The Creativity Choice: The Science of Making Decisions to Turn Ideas into Action. In this episode, she unpacks how creativity isn't just a moment of inspiration—it's a series of choices. Whether you think you're creative or not, Zorana shares how motivation, attention, risk tolerance, and constraint shape the process of turning ideas into reality. In this episode, we cover:Creativity Is More Than Ideas: Zorana explains how we've culturally over-glorified the spark of inspiration and ignored the decision-making and execution behind it.The Myth of the “Creative Type”: Creativity isn't just for artists—it's about original, effective solutions in any domain. Why Constraints Boost Creativity: Contrary to popular belief, creativity often increases when we have guardrails that focus and challenge our thinking. The Role of Risk in Creative Work: Zorana breaks down intellectual, emotional, and social risks—and how to increase your tolerance over time. The Two Engines of Creativity: Motivation provides energy, while attention directs it. You need both to make progress on creative projects.Problem Finding vs. Problem Solving: Zorana introduces this lesser-known concept as a key to identifying where creativity can be applied. The Goldilocks Zone of Challenge: Learn how to find the sweet spot between too easy and too hard so your ideas actually move forward. How Social Conditioning Kills Creativity: Early messaging about what counts as “creative” can cause many to opt out before they begin.Building Creative Momentum in Small Steps: Zorana shares her own journey from writing blog posts to eventually publishing her book—and how each step built risk tolerance. Why Total Freedom Can Backfire: New research shows that creativity thrives not in total freedom, but with a balance of structure and autonomy.Whether you're stuck at the idea stage or afraid to start, this episode will help you reframe creativity as a process anyone can engage with—and show you how to make progress one decision at a time.Learn more about Zorana's work at ZoranaPringle.com and find The Creativity Choice wherever books are sold.Connect with Erik:LinkedIn ThreadsFacebook BlueskyThis Podcast is Powered By:DescriptDescript 101CastmagicEcammPodpageRodecaster ProTop Productivity Books ListMake sure to grab Shortcasts from Beyond The To-Do List by Blinkist. In this shortcast edition of Beyond the To-Do List, Jeffrey and Jamie Downs, creators of the Streaking method and authors behind streakingmastery.com explore how laughably simple daily habits can help you build momentum, boost confidence, and turn goals into long-term identity shifts. Why Simplicity Wins: Simple actions are doable even on your hardest days, ensuring consistency over time. How Streaking Builds Self-Credibility: Each completed action is a commitment kept—with yourself.Patience as a Superpower: Daily repetition teaches you to stop expecting overnight change and instead trust the slow, steady build. The “Cal Ripken Effect”: Consistency becomes inspiring—when others notice, celebration fuels even more momentum.Examples in Action: From running streaks to walking daily, small actions lead to transformation when stacked. Why You Shouldn't Skip the Walk: When life gets busy, a one-mile walk still counts—and builds your streak. If you've ever struggled to maintain momentum or felt overwhelmed by ambitious goals, this episode will give you a new lens for creating daily progress that sticks.Find more Shortcasts like this one on Blinkist here. James Kimmel, author of The Science of Revenge, joins the show to unpack one of the most overlooked forms of distraction and emotional hijacking: revenge. Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, and decades of legal and public health research, James reveals how revenge isn't just an emotional reaction—it's an addictive cycle that can derail our focus, well-being, and relationships. If you've ever ruminated about a workplace slight, stewed in a sense of injustice, or mentally put someone “on trial,” this episode offers a powerful, science-backed path forward. In this episode, we cover:What Makes Revenge So Addictive: How grievances activate the same reward centers in the brain as drugs, gambling, and other addictive behaviors.Revenge as a Productivity Killer: Why revenge always focuses on the past—and how it hijacks our mental and emotional bandwidth in the present. The Courtroom in Your Head: James explains the mental trial many of us run daily, casting ourselves in all the roles—prosecutor, judge, jury, and warden.Grievance vs. Reality: The neuroscience behind how imagined slights are often just as powerful as real ones.Workplace Revenge Culture: How toxic tit-for-tat behavior spreads through teams and how leaders can disrupt it before it takes root.Rewiring the Feedback Loop: How revenge follows the same cue-craving-reward cycle as other habits—and how to break it.The Science of Forgiveness: Why forgiveness isn't “soft,” but rather a neurological off-ramp from pain and rumination that reactivates the decision-making part of the brain. The Wonder Drug in Your Brain: How practicing internal forgiveness shuts down pain networks and reduces stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels.Practical Tools for Release: James shares how his free app helps users safely process their grievances through guided mental courtroom exercises.Healing as Productivity: Why letting go doesn't just make you feel better—it frees up your energy for purpose-driven work and emotional clarity.Connect with James and his work at jameskimmel.com and find The Science of Revenge wherever books are sold.Connect with Erik:LinkedIn ThreadsFacebook BlueskyThis Podcast is Powered By:DescriptDescript 101CastmagicEcammPodpageRodecaster ProTop Productivity Books ListMake sure to grab Shortcasts from Beyond The To-Do List by Blinkist. This week was pretty special for me; I had the absolute joy and delight of attending my son's graduation ceremony. Watching him receive his BA honours in computer games development was not just a proud parent moment, but a celebration of dedication and achievement. You could feel the excitement and emotions in the air, alongside the bittersweet farewells, as all these budding talents prepare to embrace new beginnings. This episode delves deeply into the theme of choice and how it shapes our lives at every turn. Just like my son, who's stepping into the unpredictable yet thrilling world of the games industry—where networking and perseverance are key—we all reach points where the path ahead requires us to make choices. Whether transitioning from university or facing midlife changes, the necessity of deciding our own directions becomes crucial. I've been there too, shifting from marketing into something completely different during COVID, embracing new choices that align more with my passions. It got me pondering, how often do we consciously make choices about our current place in life? Are we in jobs, relationships, or routines by choice, or by lack of choosing? It's interesting because not choosing is also a choice, isn't it? We explore this idea in today's podcast. We consider what success means and how to become intentional with our choices. Choices can be daunting, right? Even selecting from a menu at a restaurant can be a struggle, let alone making life-altering decisions! However, with a little introspection and the right tools, we can navigate more effectively and align our choices with our true desires. Join me as we discuss making choices, big and small, and ponder where those choices might lead us. And hey, remember, the key to any great journey is movement—whether you choose to choose, or choose not to choose, the power is in your hands. In this Shortcast edition, John Jantsch, author of The Self-Reliant Entrepreneur, draws wisdom from great American writers like Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, and William Wells Brown to explore three essential traits for thriving in life and business: perseverance, perspective, and resilience. Rather than chasing productivity hacks, John invites us to dig deeper—into reflection, discomfort, and slow growth. In this Shortcast, we explore:Perseverance Through Practice: Inspired by Thoreau, John explains why repeated effort—like walking a mountain trail—is not wasted energy but the very process that builds mastery and meaning. The Danger of Indestructible Contentment: Borrowing from Twain, John challenges the idea of being too comfortable, encouraging us to embrace discomfort as a path to perspective and growth.Redefining Resilience: With a reading from William Wells Brown, John reframes procrastination not as laziness, but as strategic patience born of experience—knowing when to act, and when to wait.Growth Beyond Hustle: John reminds us that true self-reliance isn't about grinding harder—it's about trusting yourself, honoring the process, and staying open to what life is teaching you through repetition and challenge. This episode is a refreshing reset—a deeper look at what it really takes to keep going, stay grounded, and lead with presence.Find more Shortcasts like this one on Blinkist here. Today, I want to dive into something that's been close to my heart—community and connection. We live in a time where social media connects us globally, yet many of us feel more alone than ever. I know you get what I mean. But here's the kicker, genuine face-to-face interactions have never been more crucial, don't you agree? Recently, I got to spend a fabulous weekend with my running club in Ballater, nestled in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. There's something magical about sharing physical activities—be it running through the royal estates or hiking up steep hills. The shared struggle, the victory over nature, the picturesque landscapes—all add up to a bonding experience that's hard to describe. It's like, “Hey, we did that, together!” Have you ever felt that rush? On a different note, I found myself drawn back to the Findhorn community for some soulful Tazie singing. It's a beautiful practice that brings together sacred songs from various traditions. The harmony and shared spiritual quest filled the room with warmth and acceptance. It's moments like these that remind me of what it truly means to be human. Singing in a group not only uplifts the spirit but also deepens our bond with each other. The shared activities—be it strenuous hiking, running marathons with friends, or even singing in harmony—offer a profound sense of belonging. Dr. Lisa Miller's study even suggests that a spiritual connection, whether through organised religion or communal activities, can keep the blues at bay. And honestly, isn't it amazing to explore stories and passions with others? If you haven't found your tribe yet, it's never too late. Step out, get involved, and be open to receiving and giving support. It's incredible how much you can achieve when a supportive community surrounds you. So, let's cherish those connections that make life so much more vibrant. Remember to treasure and nurture them. And if you found this chat relatable or know someone who might, feel free to share! Until next time, take care! For more information of LB&B, check out the links below, and if you found this useful, consider buying me a coffee below. Levi breaks down the myths about memory and introduces powerful tools like visual mnemonics, speed reading, and memory palaces that can transform how we learn and retain information. In this Shortcast, we explore:Memory Is a Trainable Skill: Jonathan debunks the idea of a “bad memory,” explaining that most memory issues are due to poor technique, not inability.Visual Mnemonics: He introduces simple strategies for encoding new information using silly or striking mental imagery—making recall faster and easier.Speed Reading That Actually Works: Jonathan outlines how scientifically supported speed reading (600–750 words per minute) is achievable with the right eye movement training and comprehension techniques. The Memory Palace Technique: Borrowed from ancient Greece, this method helps store and organize large quantities of information with near-perfect recall.Building Cognitive Infrastructure: Jonathan emphasizes the power of mental systems—like categorizing words in a new language—to enhance retention and recall over time.Find more Shortcasts like this one on Blinkist here. In this Shortcast edition, Mamie Kanfer Stewart, co-author of Momentum: Creating Effective, Engaging and Enjoyable Meetings, explains why meetings are one of the biggest productivity drains—and how to fix them. From clarifying desired outcomes to optimizing who's in the room, Mamie shares practical, people-focused strategies to make meetings more effective, purposeful, and energizing. In this Shortcast, we explore: Start With the Outcome: Don't ask, “What's the purpose of the meeting?” Ask, “What do we want to achieve?” This mindset shift transforms how meetings are planned and executed. Alternatives to Meeting: Mamie highlights when meetings aren't needed—and how tools like email or asynchronous comments can often deliver the same outcome with less time. Before, During, and After: She outlines a full meeting workflow—from designing the agenda around outcomes, to assigning timekeepers and capturing key decisions and next steps. Fixing Meeting FOMO: We dive into how a culture of over-inviting people to meetings can waste time and lead to disengagement—and what to do instead. Reframing Meetings as Real Work: When done right, meetings are collaborative work, not interruptions. Mamie encourages giving them the same intentionality as solo tasks. Mamie's insights help shift meetings from draining distractions to meaningful, productive moments that move work forward. Find more Shortcasts like this one on Blinkist here. There can be no success without some failure, so why are we so resistant to or even shamed by failure. On this podcast, we are exploring our failiure feelings. For example, when exactly does something become a failure, and when is it time to give up? It's such a tricky question, isn't it? Society often paints failure as a badge of shame, something to be hidden away. But honestly, isn't life without failure a myth? Our journeys are filled with plans that go awry, yet they shape and define us in ways we never expect. In this episode, we delve into the concept of failure and its role in our broader life goals. We've all been there - striving for something just out of reach, and feeling crushed when it slips away. But here's a different take: failure is simply a part of the process, not the end of it. Goals are just signposts on our path, guiding us toward our greater intentions. Have you ever considered that the timeframe of achieving something often dictates the notion of failure? Whether it's in the business world or personal projects, the pressure to succeed quickly can be overwhelming. But what if we reframe the failure narrative and see it as an opportunity to learn and grow? Just like SpaceX on its fearless journey, each setback is a lesson. They're breaking things and making incredible strides by learning fast. It's all about embracing the journey and having fun along the way. So, when was the last time you enjoyed your process? If you're pondering over what success really means, it's time to look at it from a new angle. Is success a defined destination, or is it the enjoyment of the steps we take along the way? Let's discuss it and see if we can discover something new together! For more information of LB&B, check out the links below, and if you found this useful, consider buying me a coffee below. In this Shortcast edition, Donald Miller, author of Building a StoryBrand, shares how applying storytelling principles can bring clarity, purpose, and momentum to your personal and professional life. Drawing from narrative theory, Donald explains how to see your life as a story—complete with a clear goal, supporting characters, and an inciting incident—and how productivity begins with the power of focus and finish. In this Shortcast, we explore: The Life-as-Story Framework: Donald outlines the classic storytelling structure and how it applies to real life: a character with a problem, a guide, a plan, and a call to action that leads to either success or failure. The Power of an Inciting Incident: We discuss how deliberately creating an inciting incident—like signing up for a marathon or making a public commitment—can push you into meaningful action. Designing the Ideal Workday: After battling writer's block, Donald took a road trip and absorbed every productivity audiobook he could, using what he learned to build a personalized, high-focus day planner. Focus and Finish: Donald explains how the two most important productivity principles are narrowing your focus and completing what you start—because only finished work makes an impact. Clearing the Clutter of Life's Script: By eliminating unnecessary “characters” and distractions from your life story, you can make space for the plot that actually matters. Donald's insights offer a unique, narrative-driven approach to productivity that helps you clarify your goals, trim the distractions, and finish what matters most. In this Shortcast edition, Cal Newport, author of Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World, shares how we can reclaim our time and attention by taking control of our relationship with digital technology. Rather than rejecting tech entirely, Cal proposes a minimalist approach—using technology with intention and only when it supports what truly matters. In this Shortcast, we explore: Digital Minimalism Defined: Cal explains how minimalism isn't about abandoning tech, but using it selectively and purposefully to maximize benefit and minimize distraction. The 30-Day Digital Declutter: A key process in Cal's philosophy—taking a 30-day break from optional digital tools to reflect, reset habits, and rediscover values. Clearing the Slate and Starting Fresh: Cal encourages removing all non-essential apps and tools, then rebuilding your digital life from the ground up based on what serves your goals. Embracing Analog Life: Real-world activities like solitude, deep conversation, and hands-on tasks are vital for human well-being—and often lost in a screen-saturated culture. Mental Health and Focus: Cal highlights how overuse of screens increases anxiety and fragments focus, while digital minimalism promotes clarity, calm, and purpose. Cal's insights are a powerful reminder that the goal isn't to use less tech, but to use it better—with clarity, intention, and aligned values. No, it was not mine, but this did happen to another Paul. In a whirlwind twist of fate back in 2006, this renowned songwriter stumbled upon an unexpected moment of perplexity: his own obituary echoing through the airwaves. It turns out, a man named Paul Van Valkenburg had spun a crafty tale decades prior, claiming the catchy tune "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" as his youthful triumph. Fast forward to his actual passing, and an honest blunder led the newspapers to mistakenly bid farewell to Paul Vance, the still-living original composer. But wait! This story doesn't just wander down a path of misunderstanding. Instead, it blossoms into a tale of connections rekindled and love realised. From a barrage of concerned queries to heartfelt messages, this twist of events showered Paul with an unexpected gift—an outpouring of love and appreciation from those he hadn't heard from in years. While embarrassing for Van Valkenburg's family, it granted Paul's family a beautiful realisation of just how beloved he was. This anecdote unfolds into a broader reflection, encouraging you to ponder: How are you impacting those around you, and how will you be remembered? Drawing inspiration from such an unusual yet illuminating episode, the narrative nudges each of us to explore our own legacies. Engage in writing your own story—your eulogy—crafting the legacy you wish to leave behind. So join me on this introspective journey. It's a reminder that life, albeit fleeting, is our canvas. Splash it with love, generosity, and kindness. After all, the echoes of our actions today shape the memories of tomorrow. Let's embark on this journey of legacy and love together! Have you ever paused to think about the areas of your life that might be slipping through the cracks? It's a common journey we all go through as we navigate this world, reprioritising and adjusting as things evolve. In the sphere of life coaching, it's often emphasised that we need to pay attention to various parts of our lives to truly thrive. From finances and relationships to health, joy, and family, each aspect contributes to crafting a well-rounded existence. Let's face it, it's all too easy to become hyper-focused on one area, sacrificing others along the way. Decisions about what we prioritise sculpt our life journey and outcomes. But how do we achieve balance, ensuring no part of our life is left neglected? That's the personal expedition each of us must embark on, deciding where to channel our life force and energy, understanding fully that every component impacts our future success and happiness. One insightful analogy, inspired by Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Successful People, is about "sharpening the saw." It's about maintaining readiness and support networks, so we're prepared for any situation, much like keeping a saw sharp to effectively cut wood. This rings especially true for workaholics who might overlook personal relationships, only realising their importance later on when those connections have faded. Today, I'm highlighting the importance of conducting a personal review of all aspects of life. Are your relationships flourishing, is your career on track, and are your finances aligned with your professional missions? Without regular introspection and attention, change won't come. And remember, "energy flows where attention goes." Neglect breeds stagnation, while attention fosters growth. Interestingly, I've observed how crucial it is to reignite our sense of play and fun, an element sometimes forgotten in adulthood. Watching children, their capacity for joy is infectious, reminding us that fun isn't just for kids. Regularly revisiting and enhancing this aspect can add a joyful spark to daily life—ask yourself daily: "Where did I have fun today, and how can I create more of it tomorrow?" When it comes to more structured areas, such as finances or relationships, thoughtful planning is required, but each can improve significantly with dedicated focus. So, here's my simple suggestion today: take a moment to assess where you stand across life's many dimensions. If you identify areas that need improvement, provide them with the necessary attention and time to flourish. And if you need any help with that, you know who to call. Always be well on the journey. Have you ever stopped to really celebrate your achievements and reflect on what recognition truly means? In this podcast, we're diving into the crucial role of acknowledgement and celebration in our lives. You know, all too often, we hit a goal or reach a milestone but then just move on without soaking in the joy of what we've accomplished. Last weekend, I got to experience a truly inspiring event—a degree show at Abertay University. It was beautiful to watch students, including my own son, share their journey with family, friends, and industry insiders. The evening show was all about creative awards in fields like development, design, art, game art, and coding. It really hit me then, how rare those opportunities are to be publicly celebrated for our achievements. Our modern lives seem to lack those moments of appreciation, yet historically, festivals and celebrations have always brought communities together. Today, in our fast-paced world, we often miss out on true efforts to celebrate and recognize not just big milestones like weddings or birthdays but also little victories. The competitive business world often tries to mimic this with award events. However, these can sometimes feel like 'bought' recognitions rather than genuine celebrations. Yet, whatever the method, there's a shared joy in acknowledging success, one that's missing in many of our endeavours today, where the work seems endless and without tangible endpoints. So, what's the solution? We need to find ways to bring celebrations into our everyday lives, to break the routine and appreciate the journey. This is more than just about public adoration—it's about feeling good internally when we acknowledge ourselves and others. Why not try a little experiment? Pick a task, maybe cleaning out that cluttered drawer or tidying up your wardrobe. Once done, take a step back, appreciate the difference, and relish that sense of achievement. It'll empower you more than you might expect! Every little acknowledgement can be a powerful motivation booster, driving us to pursue even bigger goals. The creative industries know this; that's why they so elegantly celebrate success to propel people forward to achieve even greater heights. So let's tap into this powerful resource by valuing achievements more. Remember, this isn't just about work or big life events. It's about appreciating every stride we make on our life's journey. So, go ahead, try recognizing something you've achieved today, and see how uplifting it feels. If this chat has resonated with you, share it with a friend and spread the positivity. In this special Shortcast edition, Baratunde Thurston, shares his experience of unplugging from social media for 25 days—and what he learned about stress, productivity, and the importance of being present. Baratunde reveals how stepping away from constant digital interaction can lead to more meaningful real-world connections and less burnout. In this Shortcast, we explore: The Cost of Constant Connectivity: Baratunde explains how being “always on” took a toll on his mental health, productivity, and relationships, and why unplugging was the antidote. The Value of Presence: By exploring neighborhoods in New York without his phone, Baratunde rediscovered the value of shared experiences, analog socializing, and being grounded in the real world. Social Media as a Second Job: Baratunde highlights how social media transforms everyone into an amateur content creator, adding stress and metrics to everyday life. Challenges of Disconnecting: We discuss why platforms make it difficult to unplug—emotionally and logistically—and how Baratunde navigated the manipulation tactics of social media companies. Reclaiming Leisure and Focus: Baratunde shows how unplugging helped him be more present with others, less distracted, and ultimately more productive. Have you ever paused to think about what you truly believe in? Is it the wonders of science, the beauty of nature, or perhaps a higher power guiding you along life's path? Whatever it is, belief and faith are intricately woven into the fabric of our lives. They are the building blocks of society. Join us on this journey as we delve deep into the realms of belief and faith, those invisible forces that shape our world and influence our actions. In this episode, we explore how belief has been at the core of human societies for centuries, from religious convictions that move mountains to the shifting sands of political ideologies. We'll even take a playful jab at those quirky Jedi beliefs some choose to tick on census forms! While this is a personal reflection, there is no doubt we are living at a time of cultural shifts, and faith is part of that story. We'll ponder over poignant questions like when a mere thought morphs into a belief and how faith bridges the gap between these ideas. With a sprinkle of humour and candid reflections, we'll consider our beliefs and whether they serve or hinder us in this complex, ever-evolving world. It is time to uncover what lies at the heart of your beliefs. It's a personal discovery, one that might just offer clarity and purpose amidst the chaos. And hey, if our conversation resonates with you, don't keep it to yourself—share it with a friend! Let's keep the dialogue alive. Until next time, keep believing and exploring! In this special Shortcast edition, Jeremy Kubicek, author of The 100X Leader: How to Become Someone Worth Following, shares how we can lead with both support and challenge to help others reach their full potential. Drawing inspiration from Sherpas guiding climbers on Mount Everest, Jeremy illustrates what it means to lead others by being fully for them and helping them succeed—not just in tasks, but in personal growth. In this Shortcast, we explore: What Makes a Leader Worth Following: Why being “for” the people you lead matters more than authority or performance. The Sherpa Analogy: Leaders should guide, support, and empower others like a Sherpa helps climbers summit Mount Everest—and then helps them down again. Support + Challenge = Growth: Jeremy outlines how to calibrate the right mix of support and challenge in your leadership style to avoid extremes like fear-based or overly permissive leadership. Calling Up vs. Calling Out: A key leadership shift is learning to call people up to who they want to be, rather than calling them out with shame or frustration. From Subjective to Constructive Feedback: How shifting from judgment to objective, prescriptive feedback builds trust and lasting influence. Whether you're managing a team, parenting, or looking to grow personally, this episode offers simple but powerful strategies to lead with empathy, clarity, and effectiveness. Habits or Ritual? Have you ever wondered how much of your life is built on habits versus rituals, or vice versa? Well, you're in the right place! In this episode, I'm diving deep into the fascinating world of rituals and habits and how they play a role in our everyday lives. Do you remember Easter egg hunts as a kid? Even if Easter isn't your holiday, indulging in chocolate eggs is a shared ritual many of us cherish. It's these little traditions that give our lives a sprinkle of meaning. But why are rituals so crucial to us, and how can we harness their power to craft a better life? From ancient fertility rites to modern-day birthdays and weddings, rituals have always been about connecting people and creating memorable moments. They aren't just habits we mindlessly check off our to-do lists; they're meaningful ceremonies imbued with significance and emotion. Consider a wedding, filled with flowers, vows, and toasts or a birthday bash with cake and candles. These moments are ritualised to create depth and connection, contrasting with the simple habit of brushing your teeth or hitting snooze. In this lively chat, we explore the power of rituals, not as random acts, but as essential tools that get us through challenging times. Whether it's athletes getting in the zone with pre-game rituals or creating peace through meditation, these moments hold incredible power. Wondering how to embrace rituals in your life? Start by looking at your daily routines. What's a habit, and what can become a ritual with the right intention? How about adding a smile to your reflection every time you look in a mirror? If this resonates, share it with a friend or leave us a review. Let's explore the beauty of rituals together and see how they can transform our lives. Thanks for joining me, and until next time, take care! This is a great topic of conversation to explore further. Some of the references I use include Michael Norton, a professor at Harvard Business School, and his book, The Ritual Effect. I have not read it, but I have watched some of his videos on YouTube and he has guested on a few podcasts. Well worth checking out. . How does love fit into your life? Are you aware of your love or being loved? Love is fundamental to human existence; expressing love and feeling loved are key to a healthy and productive life. In reality, love is essential but is often forgotten. This episode explores how one small word—love—encompasses a vast spectrum of human experiences. While English limits us to a single term, ancient Greeks and Romans recognized nine distinct types of love that shape our relationships, creativity, and sense of self. Join us as we unpack these nine "colors" of love: from passionate Eros to playful Ludus, from the selfless Agape to the practical Pragma. Learn how these different expressions of love influence your daily life, your relationships, and your personal development. Through a simple yet powerful exercise called "The Love List," you'll discover which types of love dominate your life and which might be missing. This exploration isn't just theoretical—it's a pathway to deeper self-understanding and more meaningful connections with others. Whether you're reflecting on romantic relationships, family bonds, creative pursuits, or your relationship with yourself, this episode offers a framework to understand and express love in all its beautiful complexity. Hey there! Ever wondered how love fits into the grand scheme of your life? Join me, Paul Harvey, your midlife coach, in this bite-sized episode of the Life Passion and Business Shortcast where we dive into the essence of love. We all know love is fundamental to human existence, right? Yet, we often brush past it in our daily grind without giving it the spotlight it deserves. In this engaging episode, I explore how we can weave love into every aspect of our lives, from trivial things like our favorite foods to deeper connections we share with our families and friends. I invite you to make a 'love list'—an enlightening exercise that helps you map out the different kinds of love you experience. Have you ever thought about how your love for pizza differs from the love you feel for your partner? Or how does time spent with an old school friend evoke philia love? Together, we uncover the different faces of love as viewed through the lens of ancient Greek and Latin words—like Eros for passionate love, Philia for deep friendship, and Agape for unconditional love. It's all about recognizing these varying degrees in the everyday actions and relationships that fill our lives with meaning. We also tackle the importance of self-love, Philautia, emphasizing how acknowledging and embracing who we are can empower us to climb higher and weather the storms of life. This exploration isn't just about understanding; it's also about feeling and expressing love, which, as you'll see, is a true game-changer in your personal development journey. So, whether you wish to find more passion, build deeper relationships, or simply understand yourself better, this episode might just be the nudge you need. Don't forget to share it with a friend or leave a comment—let's spread the love and remind everyone that love truly is the better option! When you have completed your love list, mark it up as directed. Here are the different forms of love to remind you. Eros: Romantic Love, the Greek god of love, the Cupid cherub Philia: Affectionate love. This is the love between friends Agape: Unconditional; it is the love of sacrifice. Storge: Family love; it is how we feel about our parents and children Mania: Fixation and obsession are also forms of love. Ludus: Play Pragma: Pracicality. Meraki: The Art of Creation. Philautia: Self Love. For more information, check out the links below, and if you found this useful, consider buying me a coffee below.
