In this episode, Kim talks to Dr. Carmen Joy Imes about the women of Exodus. Dr. Imes brings her deep knowledge of Exodus to the average Christian audience, explaining how the structure and literary parallels of Exodus to show how the women are the rescuers of Moses, who then rescues the Hebrews. She provides the details of the midwives' spiritual work of saving lives. She demonstrates how Pharaoh's daughter displayed God's character as she sees Moses' misery, heard his cry, and took pity on him. She explains the Hebrew that illustrates how Miriam took a stand at the river to address Pharaoh's daughter just as Moses later took a stand to address Pharaoh. And she explains how Zipporah literally saved Moses' life as he decided which people group he belonged. Amidst these detailed portrayals of the Exodus women, Dr. Imes also points out the narrator's use of humor to depict the bumbling and nameless Pharaoh. 00:00 Introduction to Mutuality Matters 00:02 Exploring the Role of Zipporah in Exodus 01:04 Meet Dr. Carmen Joy IMEs 02:06 The Mystery of Exodus 4:24-25 03:26 Theological and Structural Significance of Zipporah 14:33 The Role of Women in the Early Chapters of Exodus 21:49 Elevating Women in Scripture 22:00 A Word from CBE 22:37 The Women of Exodus: Zipporah, Pua, and Shiphrah 22:52 The Story of Moses' Birth and the Women Who Saved Him 32:07 Moses' Identity and His Encounter with God 39:37 Closing Thoughts and Resources 41:20 Final Remarks and How to Stay Connected Guest Bio Dr. Carmen Joy Imes is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in Southern California. Notes//Quotes: Text for reading: Exodus 19:1-6 - Scott Title: Sinai pt. 2 “We can imagine our octogenarian mountaineer in joyful fellowship with the God whose patience he had exhausted at this spot some months earlier.” - Christopher Wright 10 “He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. 11 Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions, 12 the LORD alone guided him, no foreign god was with him.” —Deut. 32:10-12 ESV “Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” - Exodus 16:3 NKJV “It's three months since they've left Egypt. They started a new calendar the moment they stepped foot out of Egypt. So now time is being reckoned in relation to his work of deliverance. And he tells them, we're entering into covenant. If you obey me and keep my covenant, then out of all the nations, you're going to be my treasured possession.” - Carmen Imes “9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. - 1 Peter 2:9&10 ESV

Listen along as we continue our series in Exodus. Exodus 5:1-9, 6:1-8 - Scott Reading Title: Battle Of The Gods “The exodus is a battle of the gods, in which only one can emerge from the ring victorious…The conflict between the deities: Egypt's against Israel's, the false against the true, the serpent against the seed, Pharaoh against the Lord. It is a mismatch. Battles against the Lord always are.” —Alistair J. Roberts & Andrew Wilson, Echos Of Exodus, (pg. 41) “Their words in 5:1 have all the hallmarks of a bold prophetic word, beginning with the classic “Thus says Yahweh” (author's translation) and framed as a simple imperative, “let my people go.” At first reading it sounds impressively courageous as a direct word from God. Except that it was not. That speech in verse 1 was not actually what God had told Moses to say to pharaoh, and the narrator knows this, since he records Moses and Aaron reverting in verse 3 to the words God had actually given Moses in 3:18. — Christopher Wright “That “long tradition” includes not only Job and the writers of many a psalm of lament, not only the poet who produced the prolonged and searingly poignant protest called Lamentations, but also the prophet Elijah (1 Kgs 19) and, especially, Jeremiah, whose depression and desperation lead to outbursts of astonishing honesty, some of which employ Moses's imploring “Why …?” (e.g., Jer 12:1–4; 15:10–21; 20:7–17). That “Why …?”—echoing through the pain of so many in the Old Testament—is heard from the cross at the moment of that greater exodus that Christ accomplished there. And indeed, it was a “Why …?” taken straight from the Scriptures that shaped Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34; Ps 22:1). We know why. And Jesus, too, knew why. He was doing what he had come to do, bearing in his own divine-human self the full and terrible weight and cost and consequences of the sin of the world. But the agony of doing so draws forth this cry of dereliction. Even in the silence of heaven at that moment, we may hear the echo of exactly what God said in answer to the “Why?” that Moses asked.” - Christopher Wright "Standing on business" means to firmly prioritize your responsibilities, commitments, and personal values in a professional or serious manner, essentially indicating a dedication to taking care of your business and following through on your words with actions; it implies a sense of duty, assertiveness, and a no-nonsense attitude towards achieving goals.” - Google Ai “God just gets on with business. This is really good news for you and me because sometimes we lack faith in God, we lack enthusiasm, and we're not sure if God is going to make good on his promises. God's promises however, do not depend on us, they depend on him. And so, even if we're in a period of discouragement, we're not in danger of derailing God's plan. God will carry out the promises that he made with or without our participation. And here, God isn't just going to save the ones who are on his side and who are excited, he is going to save all of the Hebrews. He's giving them time to come around and by the time they leave Egypt, they will be on board and he will be able to rescue them.” - Dr. Carmen Imes

In this episode of the Alabaster Jar, Dr. Lynn Cohick and Dr. Carmen Imes discuss Miriam's role as a worship leader, drummer, and moral guide in the Exodus story. They highlight her agency and affirmation of God's actions while acknowledging the cultural context of women's drumming and dancing in ancient times. They also offer a nuanced understanding of Miriam's leadership and moral responsibility in the Hebrew Bible. Key Takeaways: Miriam was a drummer, not a tambourine player, as often depicted in art.Miriam played a crucial prophetic role, leading the Israelites in worship after crossing the Red Sea.There are parallel rescue stories in Exodus - Moses' rescue as a baby and the Israelites' rescue from Egypt - with Miriam playing a vital role in both.Miriam is recognized alongside Moses and Aaron as a leader of Israel during the Exodus, as mentioned in Micah 6:4.God treats Miriam as a moral agent with responsibility, as seen in her punishment for challenging Moses' authority.Studying lesser-known biblical figures like Miriam can provide deeper insights into Scripture and Israel's history. In this conversation, Dr. Carmen Imes joins Dr. Lynn Cohick to discuss their involvement in creating a study Bible for women, addressing problematic passages, and answering objections to the Bible and Christianity. They explore the misconceptions surrounding the Proverbs 31 woman and the purity laws in Leviticus, providing insights into the cultural and historical context. They emphasize the importance of including women's voices and perspectives in teaching and preaching and the need for resources like the Every Woman's Bible to address women's questions and concerns. In this part of the conversation, Carmen Imes and Lynn discuss the concept of impurity in the Old Testament and how it relates to the bleeding woman in the New Testament. They also talk about the Every Woman's Bible and its accompanying app, Filament, which provides additional resources for studying the Bible.Key Takeaways: Creating study Bibles specifically for women allows for exploring passages that are problematic or misunderstood from a female perspective. The Proverbs 31 woman should not be seen as a checklist for women to aspire to but as a personification of wisdom in various domestic spheres. The purity laws in Leviticus were not meant to be oppressive or judgmental towards women but rather had to do with their role in childbirth and the potential for life.Including women's voices and perspectives in teaching and preaching is important for addressing women's questions and concerns.Jesus' ministry challenged and transcended the purity laws, offering a new understanding of purity and healing. The Old Testament addresses issues of impurity beyond menstruation, including long-term discharges and abnormal discharges in both men and women. The Every Woman's Bible is a study Bible that focuses on women's issues and questions. Its accompanying app provides additional resources. Genesis 1:26 tells us something crucial about human nature: "Then God said, 'Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness.'" What does it mean to be "made in the image of God"? And why does that matter? What difference does it make that you and I and everyone else is made as the image of God? On this episode, Dr. Carmen Imes helps us explore this subject. Dr. Imes is associate professor of Old Testament at Talbot School of Theology (Biola University). She's back to define the different parts of bro code and why it needs to change. Hollywood is struggling. Fewer people are going to theaters, but this week saw the opening of two huge movies including Barbie. Can the movie revive Hollywood, or will its social commentary drive more Americans away? Florida's anti-woke policy is now revising how its public schools teach history by saying enslaved people benefited from the skills they learned. What's really behind the move to downplay the evil of slavery? Dr. Carmen Imes is back to discuss her new book “Being God's Image.” She says the Bible has a radical message of human dignity and equality, but Christian communities often unknowingly undermine this ethic. A Texas megachurch is facing criticism after a viral TikTok video showed a rehearsal of its Christmas production with drummers flying over the crowd on wires. The church says it's simply offering its best to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Critics say it's an extravagant violation of Jesus' humble spirit. Who's right? New data says Americans are far more isolated and lonely than ever before, and it's not because of Covid. Is the church the solution or part of the problem? And a researcher offers three surprising explanations for why the decline of religion in the U.S. didn't start until the 1990s. Then, Old Testament scholar Carmen Imes answers questions about the book of Exodus. Why did God harden Pharaoh's heart? What does it really mean to take God's name in vain? And how do all of the details about the tabernacle apply to Christians today? Could the secret to who we are lay hidden in the ancient past? Dr. Carmen Imes, associate professor of Old Testament Studies at Biola University, says "yes"! Specifically, Carmen directs us back to the events that took place at Mount Sinai, when the nation of Israel truly met their God. In this fascinating interview, Frank discusses issues with Carmen such as: How do the events of Mount Sinai point us to understanding our true identity today?, have we completely misunderstood the commandment 'Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain'?, and what does it mean to bear God's image vs. to bear God's name? Carmen discusses all of this and more in her recent book, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters. Carmen also reveals insights from her soon-to-be-released book, Being God's Image: Why Creation Still Matters (coming June 2023). She unpacks how acknowledging who we are as God's image bearers directs how we understand our purpose, identity, and significance. Plus, Frank sits down with Phoenix Hayes, the Creative Director at CrossExamined, to discuss some of the philosophical and moral implications that follow when we divorce our identity and personhood from our biology.
