Ken welcomes Judy Peterson, also known as "The Walking Pastor." In 2019, Judy's eleven-year tenure as Campus Pastor at a highly respected Christian university (North Park U. in Chicago) came to an unwelcome end when she was terminated because she officiated a same-sex wedding. Earlier in her working career, while she tended bar in a popular tavern, she had a powerful spiritual encounter. That faith came into focus as she set out on a spiritual journey. She walked across the United States (from the Pacific to the Atlantic) in a quest to know what it means to "walk with God." A graduate of North Park University, she earned both a B.A. and an M. Div. The crisis of her firing tested her faith. While she understands and appreciates the process of deconstruction, she prefers to call it composting. Today, she is founder and President of Haecceitas Inc. designed "to create spaces where those who feel disconnected from their faith might (re)discover a God who delights in each and everyone making a space for themselves in close proximity to the Divine." Judy shares her personal story of awakenings, inviting us all to join in the dance. SHOW NOTESJudy Peterson on Twitter | The RNS Article from 2019Support the show
This week on Unpacked we chat with guest Pastor Judy Howard Peterson, Pastor, founder and President of Haecceitas Inc, a non-profit that seeks to provide pastoral care and spiritual hospitality for those outside the traditional confines of the church. Judy has worked as a waitress, a landscaper, a teacher, an administrator and a pastor. She is an internationally known preacher and conference leader and continues to use my gifts in these ways. Judy chats with us about her life as a pastor and preacher, Campus Chaplain and the stories of caring for young LGTBQ+ people that lead to a public exit from the church. She shares about grief and loss of miscarriage and how she believes we're all wrong but it's all right because of Jesus. Learn what to do when your faith formula no longer works and when you find yourself as an ally and outside the community you once belonged. This is just the beginning of the series and we are looking forward to sharing the Shoulder-to-Shoulder series with you. Love has a bigger table, there is a seat for you here with us. The producers and co-creators of the Unpacked Podcast present a special series 10-part series Shoulder to Shoulder. Welcome back to the Thereafter Podcast! We are so excited to launch Season 2 and also to introduce Meghan Crozier ( @thepursuinglife on Twitter and Instagram) as the new co-host with Cortland Coffey. We take some time at the front of the show to hang out a bit and intro a new segment TwitBits (a working title) that we'll be doing each week here on the show! If you'd rather skip straight to our interview, feel free to skip ahead to the 28 minute mark. On this Season 2 debut, we had the honor of sitting down with Pastor Judy Howard Peterson. Pastor Judy was ordained in the Evangelical Covenant Church and she most recently served as the campus pastor at North Park University in Chicago, IL until she was stripped of her ordination for officiating a same-sex wedding in 2017. Her decision helped bring to the surface a broader ongoing conversation about the historically hard-line non-affirming stance within the ECC denomination. Judy's warm and caring nature leaves a lasting impression on anyone who crosses paths with her and we have no doubt you will feel seen and loved as you listen to her stories. You can find Judy these days on Instagram at @walkingpastor where she continues to share her journey on a daily basis. We'd love to hear your thoughts from the episode. Judy Peterson reflects on how the incarnation of Jesus invites us to live our faith in an embodied way [Luke 7:11-22]. Reflection What do you long to see made manifest in this world? When was the last time you were moved from your innermost being and how did you respond?
Judy Peterson reflects on how Jesus invites us to love our nearby neighbors with whom we have conflict with [Luke 10]. Reflection You are sheep and not a wolf. How would you approach your nearby neighbors with whom you have conflict differently if you believed not only that you are sheep, but also that there is a Good Shepherd involved? How might you consider letting Jesus turn your "Fire" into "Woe"? MWG Discussion Questions Who are the nearby neighbors in our lives that we have conflict with? Who do we hold a grudge towards and how holds a grudge against us? What is the source of the conflict that comes between us and our nearby neighbors? When Jesus invites his disciples not to take any possessions with them as they are sent out, what would it look like practically for us not to take our ideologies, theologies, and loyalties to defend when we interact with others? How might that impact our conversations? If the one who shows mercy is a true neighbor, what would showing mercy look like with our neighbors we have conflict with? How might we begin to break down barriers that have been put up over time? How can we rely less on their response and more on our invitation to love and extend peace?
“All of these people died never having received what was promised, and yet they died in hope, not in cynicism. They knew that God was building something. There was a city prepared for them, there was a world, a kingdom, and so I take great hope in that.”In this next episode of Letters to the Church, we are excited to hear from Pastor Judy Peterson on this Feast of All Saints' Sunday!
Gideon Tsang reflects on how we can slowly practice getting out of the hell of our minds and into the experience of heaven that’s at hand. Christina Cotham and Judy Peterson also share their reflections on this text [Acts 7:54-60]. Reflection What does heaven on earth feel like for you? How can you cherish the moments when you're at home without shame in this world? Spiritual Practice Contemplative Prayer. Breathing in, I calm my body. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment, I know this is a wonderful moment. Resources Video: Vox Online Liturgy Replay
Judy Peterson reflects on the feminine Epiphany of how Jesus arrived and what it means for our ability to view our own bodies more charitably [Luke 1]. Reflection What would it look like for us to step away from the dualistic thinking that says we are either holy or sinful and instead simply acknowledge that sometimes we are just human and that's more than alright? Is it possible that the hidden, vulnerable or even shame-filled part of your life or story might just be the exact portal through which God wants to be delivered into this world?
Judy Peterson is a force to be reckoned with. She's a storyteller, pastor and a deep thinker who practices what she preaches until the point of no return...And it's safe to say she'd go even farther than whatever point was drawn in the sand if it meant walking with Jesus where he walked. She's not your typical pastor (and neither was Jesus). She shares her deep pains, great joys and love of God and scripture in this podcast! Judy gave me (Tony) permission to share her personal email with Holy Cannoli listeners who wanted to be in touch with her (in kindness). Judy Peterson reflects on how God creates everything with intent and purpose and how each of us is a unique reflection of the image of God [Genesis 1:26-27]. Reflection What are the"thats" that are not a part of the "THIS" God had created you to be? Who are the "thems" to which you tend to conform and how might God be calling you to stand in your unique "THISNESS" so that your community might come to see God more clearly?

A conversation that occurred on WDEV’s “Open Mike” program on January 11, 2018. Host Mike Smith interviewed Dr. John Brumsted, president and CEO of the UVM Health Network and Judy Peterson, president and CEO of the Visiting Nurse Association of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties about the two organizations deciding to create a formal affiliation.
There’s something rotten in the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). It’s rotting from the inside due to the presence of wolves in sheep’s clothing like Peter Hawkinson, pastor of Winnetka Covenant Church; North Park Theological Seminary professor, Michelle Clifton-Soderstrom; and the recently removed chaplain of North Park University, Judy Peterson. Their theological drift away from orthodoxy is indicative of what is taking place in many denominations that are supplanting Scripture with subjective human experience and desire as the lens through which to read and interpret Scripture. Judy Peterson (Campus Pastor of North Park University in Chicago IL) continued the theme of honesty by discussing Psalm 32 and how we are free to show our true selves.
