In this episode of The Leader's Journey Podcast, Jim sits down with Houston-area pastor Melissa Emerson to explore what it means to live faithfully in the midst of deep church change. After stepping into leadership of Mosaic Community Covenant Church following her father's sudden passing, Melissa and her husband have led their community through a nomadic, experimental journey—redefining what church can be in the most diverse suburb in the U.S. With honesty, wisdom, and a heart for justice, Melissa shares what it's been like to shed institutional expectations, rediscover community, and follow the Spirit's leading in uncharted territory. If you've ever felt disillusioned with “church as usual,” or if you're discerning a new way forward, this conversation offers courage and clarity for the road ahead. This season we are focusing on justice as an aspect of spiritual formation and we believe Lent to be the perfect season to explore this connection. Using A Just Passion: A Six-Week Lenten Journey, and the lectionary, we will look at various aspects of justice, its importance to God and why the modern church has often regrettably failed to live out God's call to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with the Lord.”   In week one, Ruth brings back Transforming Center team member Tina Harris, and guest Dominique DuBois Gilliard to look at the theme of confession. The three discuss the relational nature of justice, how our silence, inaction, and indifference to injustice breeds relational death, how our privilege can keep us disconnected from the pain of others and more.    Lectionary scripture for this week: Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7 Psalm 32 Romans 5:12-19 Matthew 4:1-11   Mentioned in this episode: Rethinking Incarceration: Advocating for Justice that Restores by Dominique DuBois Gilliard Subversive Witness: Scripture's Call to Leverage Privilege by Dominique DuBois Gilliard   Dominique DuBois Gilliard is the Director of Racial Righteousness and Reconciliation for the Love Mercy Do Justice(LMDJ) initiative of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). When Natasha was in sixth grade, her parents sat her down and told her that if she didn't do something to make her stand out, she wouldn't go to college. At the young age of eleven, she made up her mind to be the best of the best in order to affordably go to college. When she enrolled in the Naval Academy, reality hit hard when she realized her public education failed her, she was different and not accepted among her peers or superiors. In this same season of life, the unexpected passing of her mother would require Natasha to become her family's main provider. How do you overcome when the odds seem stacked against you? On this episode of Where Ya From?, Author, retired Marine Officer, and inspirational speaker Natasha Sistrunk Robinson shares her unbelievable story of what it looks like to endure through hardship and cling to the only thing that is true and constant—faith in God. Guest Bio: Natasha Sistrunk Robinson is the president of T3 Leadership Solutions, Inc., as well as a sought-after international speaker, executive leader, and mentoring coach with over twenty years of leadership experience in the military, federal government, church, seminary, and nonprofit sectors. She's also the author of many notable books including A Sojourner's Truth: Choosing Freedom and Courage in a Divided World.  Natasha is also host of the podcast A Sojourner's Truth: Conversations for a Changing Culture. Natasha has proudly served her country as a marine corps officer and a federal government employee at the Department of Homeland Security. Notes & Quotes: “It's one thing to have unjust laws on the books that should never be on the books. It's another thing to have just laws on the books, but they have to be enforced.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson  “I'm like, God, I need you to go because the people who normally go, to do all the things, to show up in such a way, they're not going to be able to do that for me. So I need you to do that and be that for me. And if you do that, I will serve you. And so that was kind of the start of my own personal journey.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson  “You know, the question is are leaders born or made? And I say both, right? I think some leaders are born. I think some are made. And I think, whether you're born or made, you all need training, you could always get better.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson “I know God uses anybody. He uses broken vessels, so to speak, all the time and imperfect people all the time. But I also, I just take that as a try to stay humble in that, but also stay in awe of God in that.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson “Disciple making is not just about programming. It's not just about Bible study. It's not just about going to church. It's not just about activity. I look at disciple making in the way that Jesus models for us with the twelve men we call apostles and the women that accompanied them on the journey of investing large amounts of time with small groups of people, because I believe that's where we're going to have the greatest impact.”—Natasha Sistrunk Robinson Links Mentioned: Natasha Sistrunk Robinson ministry website Natasha Sistrunk Robinson book: A Sojourner's Truth Visit our website to sign up for emails. I am grateful to have had numerous significant spiritual mentors in my life, but one of the most significant mentors in my young adult years was Dr. Jeffrey Crafton. Dr. Crafton is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church, an adjunct professor at North Park Theological Seminary, and a Sacred Studies teacher at Minnehaha Academy, teaching classes in ethics and faith formation to eleventh and twelfth graders. This year, Dr. Crafton is retiring from Minnehaha Academy after 26 years of mentoring thousands of high schoolers as they wade through pivotal faith-related questions. In my time with Dr. Crafton, we tackle some of the same issues and themes that arise in his classes, including issues of faith and doubt, how he sees science as complimentary to faith, and, after studying the uniqueness of Christianity for decades, what he believes to be most captivating about the person of Jesus. Spiritual mentors don't offer easy answers but bring us hope and grounding in an often-chaotic world. My hope is that today's conversation will do just that.

In the Valley Series   Our conversation on Lament & Justice will be primarily based on Dr. Soong-Chan Rah's book Prophetic Lament. Lament, as Dr. Rah writes, is when we have to acknowledge that the world is not as it should be and that leads to various forms of suffering. Lament is profoundly lacking in the church and this has contributed to the ways injustices continue to happen.    Rev. Dr. Soong-Chan Rah is the Robert Munger Professor of Evangelism at Fuller Seminary. He previously served as the Milton B. Engelbrestson Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park Theological Seminary. He is the author of The Next Evangelicalism (IVP Books, 2009); Many Colors (Moody, 2010); Prophetic Lament (IVP Books, 2015); co-author of Forgive Us (Zondervan, 2014); Return to Justice (Brazos, 2016); and Unsettling Truths (IVP Books, 2019). Rah is formerly the founding Senior Pastor of Cambridge Community Fellowship Church (CCFC), a multi-ethnic church living out the values of racial reconciliation and social justice in the urban context. He has previously served on the boards of World Vision, Sojourners and the Christian Community Development Association. This is part 2 of 4 episodes and today's topic is on lamenting in the valley.    Resources: https://www.tailored.coach/soongchanrah   Host: Alethea Lamberson & Matthew Melendrez Guest: Dr. Soong-Chan Rah Guest Socials: @Profrah on Twitter & Facebook  Producer: Caleb Dea Social Media & Marketing: Jazzlyn Venkataya Designer: Cameron Stingley Admin Assistant: Alexandra Suarez   Follow us on IG: @therolldownpodcast   The Roll Down podcast is part of the Chasing Justice Podcast Network. It's commonly said that absolute power corrupts absolutely. How then should Christians think about power? What about Christians who aren't just disempowered, but also marginalized and oppressed? Dr. Dennis Edwards has written a new book that extolls Christians who have found themselves on the margins of society because of their background, identities, and/or experiences to tap into the power of the Gospel that is already present and available within them. Kyle and Dr. Edwards talk about the nature of power, Christianity's relationship with power, and what it looks like for marginalized Christians to seek Christ and work for justice while fighting oppression and marginalization in their own lives. A prescient conversation for these tumultuous political times, be sure to check this episode out! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. Dennis Edwards is Associate Professor of New Testament Studies at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago. In addition to holding a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from the Catholic University of America, Dr. Edwards has also pastored churches in Brooklyn, DC, and Minneapolis. Dr. Edward's hobbies include being decently talented at everything.
