Philip Gulley, Peterson, and Sweet Miche share their personal journeys of unlearning traditional theological concepts and reflect on what makes Quakerism a meaningful path to a more authentic faith. Gulley highlights fear as a significant motivator for religious beliefs and a tool for control and how the current political moment is a masterfully evil manipulation of human fears. Gulley also offers his perspective on the continued usefulness of organized religion, emphasizing the importance of bringing people together, respecting personal autonomy, and aligning its social efforts with the ethos of Jesus and radical love. Philip Gulley is a Quaker pastor, writer, and speaker from Danville, Indiana. Gulley has written 22 books, including the Harmony series recounting life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony, Indiana, and the best-selling Porch Talk essay series. Gulley's memoir, I Love You, Miss Huddleston: And Other Inappropriate Longings of My Indiana Childhood, was a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Hor. In addition, Gulley, with co-author James Mulholland, shared their progressive spirituality in the books If Grace Is True and If God Is Love, followed by Gulley's books If the Church Were Christian and The Evolution of Faith. In Living the Quaker Way: Timeless Wisdom For a Better Life Today, Gulley offers the opportunity to participate in a world where the values of the Quaker way bring equity, peace, healing, and hope. In his most recently published non-fiction work, Unlearning God: How Unbelieving Helped Me Believe, Gulley describes the process of spiritual growth, especially the re-interpretation of the earliest principles we learned about God. Resources Here are some resources for friends in the process of unlearning and seeking spiritual growth: Therapy Therapy and spiritual growth can be deeply complementary. While therapy doesn't typically provide spiritual direction, it creates fertile ground for unlearning and spiritual development. You can use online therapist directories to find a therapist by location, insurance, specialty, cost, and more at Psychology Today, TherapyDen, or Open Path Psychotherapy Collective. Poets and Authors Audre Lorde is a profoundly influential Black lesbian feminist writer, poet, theorist, and civil rights activist. Her work powerfully explores the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability. You can read her essays in Sister Outsider and her "biomythography" Zami: A New Spelling of My Name. Federico Garcia Lorca is one of Spain's most important poets and playwrights of the 20th century. His work is celebrated for its intense lyricism, surreal imagery, and passionate exploration of themes like love, death, desire, oppression, and Andalusian culture, particularly in works like Gypsy Ballads and plays such as Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba. Walt Whitman is a central figure in American poetry, often called the "Bard of Democracy." Whitman revolutionized poetry with his use of free verse and expansive lines. His lifelong work, Leaves of Grass, celebrates the individual, democracy, nature, the body, spirituality, and the interconnectedness of all life, aiming to capture the diverse spirit of America. Mary Oliver is an American poet who focuses on the natural world, particularly the landscapes of New England. Her work finds wonder, spirituality, and profound insight in quiet observation and moments of attention to nature, inviting readers to connect more deeply with the world around them. Christian Wiman is a contemporary American poet and essayist known for his unflinching honesty and intellectual rigor in exploring themes of faith, doubt, suffering (often drawing on his own experience with chronic illness), mortality, and love. Joy Harjo is a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and served as the first Native American U.S. Poet Laureate. Her work weaves together Indigenous history, spirituality, myth, social justice, resilience, and a deep connection to the land, often infused with the rhythms of music and prayer. Akwake Emezi is a non-binary Nigerian writer and artist known for their powerful, innovative, and often genre-bending work. Their novels (like Freshwater and The Death of Vivek Oji) explore complex themes of identity, spirituality (often drawing on Igbo cosmology), gender, mental health, trauma, and the body, challenging conventional Western frameworks of selfhood. Elaine Pagels is a renowned historian of religion, particularly noted for her scholarship on early Christianity and Gnosticism. Her groundbreaking book, The Gnostic Gospels, brought non-canonical early Christian texts to wider attention, revealing the diversity of early Christian thought and exploring how political and social contexts shaped religious history and scripture. LGBTQ+ film festivals are events dedicated to showcasing films by, for, or about queer individuals and communities. They serve as vital platforms for representation, providing visibility for filmmakers and stories often marginalized in mainstream media. These festivals (like Frameline, Outfest, NewFest, and countless others globally) are also important spaces for community building and celebrating queer culture. Quaker Voluntary Service is a year-long program rooted in Quaker values. It brings young adults together to live in an intentional community, work full-time in social justice-focused non-profit organizations, and engage in spiritual exploration and leadership development, putting faith into action. Listener Responses We hear directly from Roxanne, who unlearned the idea that any single group holds the definitive spiritual answer, instead discovering valuable truths across diverse practices and traditions through their continuous seeking. On Facebook, friends shared their experience wrestling with the traditional ideas about God they grew up with. Many people mentioned letting go of a harsh or judgmental image of God, questioning core doctrines, and letting go of feelings of unworthiness. David Gulley FWCF On the 2nd of May 2024 we received the sad news of the passing of David Gulley FWCF.Born on the 4th of August 1939 in Plymouth Devon, David grew up with an obsession for horses, his mother once telling him of his fascination of the Shire horses working in the streets Plymouth. When David reached the age of 15 due to the lack of farriery apprenticeships being available due to mechanisation, David took on a 4-year apprenticeship in Blacksmithing and Engineering. On completion of his apprenticeship in 1960 he was called up for National Service into the British Army. As he signed up, he asked about the possibility of being an Army Farrier, of which the ill-informed Army recruiting Sergeant replied, “there was not such a thing anymore”. David then opted to become a Driver. Whilst in basic training Davids unit was visited by a recruiting officer from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC), looking for recruits. David asked the officer did they have Farriers? The officer replied “yes”. At that point David told the officer that if he could transfer to the forge, he would instantly sign up for 22 years' service, the maximum engagement you can sign up for. In late 1960 David moved to Melton Mowbray and started working at the Remount Depot, now known as the Defence Animal Training Regiment, and started his life as an Army Farrier Apprentice at the old Army School of Farriery (ASF). Coincidently David joined the school 1 day after another farriery legend and lifelong friend David “Slim” Symons FWCF (hons). David was lucky enough to be taken under the wing of Jock Green a very well-regarded Army farrier instructor who pushed David to excel through hard work and determination. David managed to achieve the uncompressible feat of becoming a B1 Army farriery instructor and the rank of full Corporal in under 2 years. After 9 years of being based at the ASF teaching and competing David took the decision to leave the army and set up his own business. These were the days pre regulation, which would not become an act of parliament for a few years. At the time there was a lack of good farriers in the Leicestershire area servicing the fledgling equine leisure industry, with many untrained farriers cold shoeing applying shoes poorly. David was lucky enough to get the opportunity to repurpose a disused cattle shed into a forge, which is where he remained for the rest of his life in Thorpe Satchville, Leicestershire with his partner Judy. It wasn't long before David had built a busy business and the requirement for more manpower, so started his long list of successful apprentices. The first of which was Andrew Speck RSS, which went on to include the likes of Cecil Swan, Gary Darlow, Kevin Green, Joe Bryan and Andrew James. He went on to train 24 apprentices in total and was always proud of the achievements of all he trained and had said countless times that his proudest achievement was training his own son Micheal. On retirement he was presented a “Family Tree”, by some of his ex-apprentices, starting with David, his apprentices, their apprentices and so on. To this date there are 5 generations of farriers with lineage back to David, over time this will grow and will remain one of Davids Legacies. After leaving the Army David's involvement with the National Association of Farriers, Blacksmiths and Agricultural Engineers (now known as BFBA) began. Joining his local branch, Leicestershire, David became an active member and very quickly rising to the position of chairman. With the registration act looming on the horizon, David was proactive in putting on training and testing for farriers in the area to achieve their Registered Shoeing Smiths (RSS) exams. In Davids own words this was all about trying to make farriers better. David always held horse welfare as the most important part of farriery. He went on to sit t

Dennis Gulley's message, "Generosity in Ministry Multiplication”, draws inspiration from 2 Corinthians 8:1-15, emphasizing the transformative power of sharing resources within the Christian community.
Rev. Wendy concludes her series on "If the Church were Christian," by sharing about "Peace, Love, and Life." The theme explores the essence of Christianity through the lens of Philip Gulley's book, "If the Church Were Christian: Rediscovering the Values of Jesus," advocating for a shift towards values such as peace, love, and prioritizing life over doctrinal preoccupations. Gulley criticizes the church's emphasis on power, sexual matters, and the afterlife, urging a focus on living ethically and compassionately in the present. Ultimately, the message emphasizes Jesus' teachings of social justice, compassion, and the transformation of the world rather than a fixation on the afterlife. An awards ceremony scheduled for Friday will recognize a group of Sterling Heights heroes. Employees say a family was shopping when the father of an 18-month-old boy ran up to the cashier, frantically asking for help because the child wasn't breathing. One person is dead and two others injured following a crash in Dearborn Heights. It happened Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Van Born and Gulley roads. Police say a tow truck was traveling westbound on Van Born when it collided with a vehicle turning onto Gulley from Van Born. (Credit: WWJ)
Rev. Wendy Craig-Purcell starts a new series on "If the Church were Christian," today. In essence, Gulley suggests that if the church were truly Christian, it would prioritize Jesus as a model for living rather than an object of worship. He highlights the challenges in understanding Jesus due to the significant time gap between his life and the earliest gospel accounts, the variety of non-canonized texts like the Gospel of Thomas, and the contradictions among the four New Testament gospels. Gulley proposes that the concept of Jesus' divinity should focus on humanity's inherent likeness to God, as seen in Quaker theology. He emphasizes that following Jesus' example would lead to profound personal and societal transformations, challenging society to reconsider its values and priorities. [5+ HOUR LONG SHOW! JOIN THE PIZZA FUND! $12 level. https://podawful.pizza/posts/2372] Two years ago the Pod Awful Youtube channel was falsely reported and terminated by some mysterious MONSTER. As the dust settled, most people assumed Tom Gulley, a REAL RADIO MAN, was behind it all. Tom made it easy to believe he was the villain, inviting the torches and pitchforks of the PODAWFUL Cult. But then, suddenly, Tom disappeared from the internet. Now he's back from the dead, and in an effort to make peace, Jesse chose to forgive Tom and make friends. Tom pleaded his case that he had nothing to do with the channel's termination, and after an EIGHT HOUR LONG stream together, Tom and Jesse seemed to have finally buried the hatchet. But the peace would be short lived, because Jesse's wife now suspects that Tom's gotten a little TOO close, and now after a big fight and a phone call to Tom's brother, PODAWFUl is in danger of being thrown in the lake once again. This episode is jam packed! I sit down with Harvey Lewis, just days after his finish at Badwater 135. And his Badwater run across Death Valley was less than 2 weeks after his 375 miles that he ran at Dead Cow Gully backyard ultra in Australia. We also talk about his documentary that just game out: Like Harvey Like Son, where he attempted the fastest known time, FKT, to run the entirety of the Appalachian Trail. I also found out that he ran the Arrowhead 135, which is a race across the frozen landscape of International Falls, Minnesota where temps have dipped to -45°F during the race. Harvey has also ran in the last two runnings of the Barkley Marathons, which is an invite-only 100-ish mile orienteering race at Frozen Head State Park that has only been completed 21 times by 17 runners. Again, so much to get to and I hope you enjoy this episode. I feel like there is a lot more to uncover with Harvey and more stories to share, but we try to uncover more of his adventures and the worst weather he has had to endure. Harvey partners with RoadiD, Newton, Tailwind, 2XU, and All Day Running. Follow Harvey on social media by looking up Harvey Lewis Ultrarunner on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. You can find the documentary "Like Harvey, Like Son" on Amazon Prime Video. Also, if you are interested in checking out his travel running company, check out Run Quest Travel.

Tori sits down with golf fitness trainers Andrew Hannon and Zach Gulley. Our guests kick things off with their thoughts on using social media as a tool for business growth, before diving into the meat of today's conversation: each of their top five ways to gain more distance! Key Takeaways ● (13:53) Improving your speed can increase your distance, but it's not the only way to do so. Other factors that play into distance are improving the mechanics of your swing, and fixing or acquiring equipment specifically built for you. ● (18:30) The gym will only take you so far. It's never a bad idea to go to the gym and work on your fitness. But if you're serious about unlocking your potential as a golfer, it's important to work with a coach on a regular basis. ● (21:46) Work on sequencing. At the most basic level, a swing sequence is a progression of movement from the pelvis to the torso to the arms to the wrists to the club. It's not like that for everybody, not even tour pros. But Andrew and Zach train this sequence as a foundation because it results in maximum athletic motion. In other words, getting as close as possible to this particular sequence has been observed to produce the most power. ● (30:48) Improve your force production. This is where the gym comes into play. How fast can you squat, bench, and row? Have a professional evaluate your current level of fitness as well as your body fat and other vitals, so that you're able to create an optimized roadmap for your physical progression. Force production is crucial because more strength equals more speed. ● (37:46) When screening a player, Andrew and Zack begin with trying to understand who they are as a golfer. What's your motivation? Are you teachable? Are you willing to invest a considerable amount of time to achieve your goals? Most people are excited about the thought of improving their fitness and skills, but it's just as important to willingly put in the time and effort needed to do so! ● (42:01) Incorporate power implements to your training. The goal is to train your body to move lighter loads faster. Use equipment such as medicine balls and bands, and practice jumps to boost your force production. ● (43:55) The three Ds of iron fitting are Distance, Dispersion, and Dissent angle. This is because each club has a different goal. Two clubs that do the same thing only make for a heavier bag. As important as distance is, without tight dispersion, you will have worse misses. The better your misses, the better your game. Likewise, if you're not landing on and holding greens, your score will continue to add up. NBC 5 reporter and weekend anchor Vince Sims joins his old friend Ted Madden and Dr. Gulley. As a polished presence in local media in the Dallas-Fort Worth market, Vince is still country at heart, as he grew up on a farm in Southeast Arkansas. Vince's career has included stops in Monroe (Louisiana), Pittsburgh, and Atlanta. His compassion, along with his patience and grace, has helped him successfully navigate a career in TV that can sometimes be contentious.
It is so very powerful within the work that I do when women wake up and say, enough is enough. And Grace Gulley is certainly healing and using her voice to stand strong in her advocacy for mothers, mental health and fighting against the systems that oppress mothers and caregivers. Grace experienced a somewhat unexpected pregnancy, being let go from her job, and a pandemic thrown in. After suffering in silence with an undiagnosed (and ignored) perinatal mood anxiety disorder for the first year of new motherhood, she came across matrescence and importantly the https://amytaylorkabbaz.com/mama-rising/ (Mama Rising) book to encourage alongside. Listen to I chat with Grace in a touching and powerful conversation which includes: Postpartum rage, burnout, anxiety and emotional realities alongside the isolation of pandemic pregnancies and early motherhood. The rig system. Patriarchy, rules around motherhood, value from productivity and money and how it is designed to benefit those upholding the system - rarely supportive enough for current day mothers. Current challenges with the US system such as reproductive rights, maternity leave and childcare to name a few. The https://mamarising.net/mama-rising-waitlist (Mama Rising) program and how words create worlds. How it can be hard to articulate within motherhood and ask for support. Grace brings a certain essence which is incredibly powerful throughout this interview and I know this is what we need in the world right now to change the system of motherhood and support women and birthing parents differently. I invite you to follow Grace via her instagram https://www.instagram.com/gracegulley/ (@gracegulley), because this woman is making shifts for us all. Additionally, you can find out more and receive your Matrescence map here https://www.amytaylorkabbaz.com/matrescence/
Public health may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about rural healthcare. Sensei Arthur Gulley Jr. is a Martial Arts practitioner and instructor, podcaster, and author from Michigan. One of the things I really stress when I do my videos is that, it's not about which style is better, it's not about which discipline is better… It's about how you understand the principles of that discipline. Sensei Arthur Gulley Jr. - Episode 752 When his bullies realized what they had done was wrong, they taught him some moves on how to defend himself. Sensei Arthur Gulley Jr. had an interesting way to get introduced to Martial Arts. First, it was his bullies, and then his cousins. Sensei Arthur Gulley Jr. is married, and have three sons. He is also a musician and an author with works on all Platforms and books on kindle. In this episode, Sensei Arthur Gulley Jr. shares his journey to the martial arts from a kid who wants to learn how to defend himself into the passionate Martial Artist that he is today.
