It's been proven that companies prosper more when diversity increases and we improve gender balance. Yet the workplace is the same experience for all women. In fact, white women are at a distinct advantage in terms of promotions, pay, and dealing with microaggressions. When we can understand how our experience is similar and different from women of color, we can work together towards a future where all women can rise to create a truly diverse workplace that creates prosperity for all. Jill is joined in this episode by Mariah Johnson, who is an equity consultant with an emphasis on intersectionality of gender and race, and Ashley Cisneros Ritter, who is the Practice Director at Chicago Career Consulting and also the Associate Dean at the School of Business at North Park University, where she has also taught gender studies. Together they explore how women leaders can recognize and reflect on the intersections of gender, race, class, language, education and more to spot opportunities to lead in new ways that create new norms in the workplace so all women have more opportunities to rise up and find fulfillment at every level. 05:25 — How women carry the burden of unpaid labor and how to spot it to prevent it 09:25 — How to identify where patriarchal norms are at play and begin to shift the standard away from those working styles 20:32 — How women can let go of the mental burden we tend to carry so we can be present for ourselves and our family27:27 — What intersectionality is, how it can create additional imbalances in the workplace, and how we can recognize and address it (especially if you're a white woman)

Building on part one, Dr. Boaz Johnson considers how women throughout the Old Testament are characterized by strength (Chayil in Hebrew). Part of women's strength is the result of much suffering, like Job's wife who becomes the mother of seven boys and three girls. The girls are named but not the boys. Consider the Song of Songs, the Shulamite woman was also a shepherdess who experienced much pain but also and exhibited even more strength. Consider Ruth who is considered a Proverbs 31 woman. She is also a foreign woman who had much to overcome including much pain. Consider Esther, also portrayed as a Proverbs 31 woman. She too faced unbearable circumstances, but God was faithful and evident in her strength. It is by passing through much suffering that we are made rich with insights and intimacy with God, particularly noted in the Psalms of lament. Consider Psalms 22:1 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?” These are the 7 last words of Jesus on the cross. Scholars note that while dying on the cross, Jesus was singing Psalm 22-23 which are songs of hope! The translation team came to the conclusion that this is not a cry of despair. It's not a question but a statement that God will not forsake those in pain and who are suffering. Psalm 22: 9-10 was translated by the team as: “You are the one who drew me from the womb. You made me safe at my mother's breast. Upon you I was cast from my birth. You have been my God from my mother's womb.” In this passage, God is portrayed both as the father and also as mother. Remember, that while Christ was dying on the cross, the disciples ran away and hide behind locked doors. But the women remained with him, listening to Christ sing as he died. These words were preserved by the women as they remained vigilant with their dying Lord. Throughout the podcast, Boaz expresses his delight in hearing the voices and insights of the women scholars on CBE's translation team. The power of their collective wisdom will definitely bring much healing to our world overall, and to the future of Bible translation teams going forward. Thanks be to God! Ken welcomes Judy Peterson, also known as "The Walking Pastor." In 2019, Judy's eleven-year tenure as Campus Pastor at a highly respected Christian university (North Park U. in Chicago) came to an unwelcome end when she was terminated because she officiated a same-sex wedding. Earlier in her working career, while she tended bar in a popular tavern, she had a powerful spiritual encounter. That faith came into focus as she set out on a spiritual journey. She walked across the United States (from the Pacific to the Atlantic) in a quest to know what it means to "walk with God." A graduate of North Park University, she earned both a B.A. and an M. Div. The crisis of her firing tested her faith. While she understands and appreciates the process of deconstruction, she prefers to call it composting. Today, she is founder and President of Haecceitas Inc. designed "to create spaces where those who feel disconnected from their faith might (re)discover a God who delights in each and everyone making a space for themselves in close proximity to the Divine." Judy shares her personal story of awakenings, inviting us all to join in the dance. SHOW NOTESJudy Peterson on Twitter | The RNS Article from 2019Support the show

Dr. Boaz Johnson explores women Bible translators such as Pandita Ramabai (1858-1922) who, as a child, memorized thousands of Sanskrit texts. After coming to faith as a Christian, Pandita mastered the ancient languages and produced a Bible in Marathi—a very popular dialect in India. The work was completed on her compound called Mukti—meaning salvation. In all of history, there was never a translation of Scripture like Pandita's that was entirely the work of women: from translation to printing, binding, and distribution. Pandita's work inspired a contemporary of hers, Katharine Bushnell, MD (1855-1946). A medical doctor, missionary, and anti-trafficking activist, Bushnell encountered prostituted girls in India and elsewhere in the world. Bushnell was convinced that poor Bible translations were part of the cause since they portrayed women as inferior to men. Both women, Ramabai and Bushnell, did significant work to expose and upend the demeaning of women noted in failed Bible translations, a topic Dr. Boaz Johnson addresses throughout the podcast. Another woman mentioned was Frances E. Siewert (1881-1997). Holding academic degrees such as Litt. B., B.D., M.A., Litt. D., Siewert is credited as the visionary who initiated the Amplified Bible. Dr. Boaz Johnson expressed enormous appreciation for the team he works beside especially the women Bible translators from countries outside the US. Their scholarly expertise, coupled with their experiences as women from varied ethnicities and cultural backgrounds brings fresh perspectives to their translation decisions. One example was their decision to translate Ezer Kenegdo in Genesis 2:18 as “one who walks ahead of the other” in a posture of defense and protection. Ezer Kenegdo a phrase most often used of God's rescue of Israel. This is also how God describes woman in Genesis 2:18: one who protects and defends the man. Dr. Boaz Johnson then connects the characteristic of women's defensive protection noted in other biblical women like Ruth, the Proverbs 31 woman, and the wife of Job. The episode ends by considering the women who suffer, the Mary's of Scripture who through pain and trials become wise, strong, and prophetic leaders. Guest Bio: Dr. Boaz Johnson, PhD Dr. Rev. There have been Christians throughout history who God has called to societal activism on behalf of the poor and oppressed. And the power in which they did so was found in their inner faith practices that connected them intimately with God through Christ and His Spirit. Mae Elise Cannon is the author of Just Spirituality: How Faith Practices Fuel Social Action (IVPress, 2013). As both a historian and a Christian advocate for peace and justice in the Middle East, she explores the direct connection between Christians' personal relationship with God and their outward actions of kindness, mercy, compassion and advocacy. She looks at how several notable Christian historical figures were able to engage in their societal challenges because of their spiritual practices. Rev. Dr. Mae Elise Cannon is the executive director of Churches for Middle East Peace and an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). Here is our interview with Mae Cannon. Cannon formerly served as the senior director of Advocacy and Outreach for World Vision, as a consultant to the Middle East for child advocacy issues for Compassion International in Jerusalem, as the executive pastor of Hillside Covenant Church in Walnut Creek, California, and as director of development and transformation for extension ministries at Willow Creek Community Church. She holds an MDiv from North Park Theological Seminary, an MBA from North Park University's School of Business and Nonprofit Management, and an MA in bioethics from Trinity International University. She received her doctorate in American History with a minor in Middle Eastern studies at the University of California (Davis) focusing on the history of the American Protestant church in Israel and Palestine. Mae Cannon is also the author of Social Justice Handbook: Small Steps for a Better World (with a forward by John Perkins) (IVPress, 2009) and the editor of A Land Full of God: Christian Perspectives on the Holy Land (Cascade Books, 2017). I had the pleasure of hosting Miranda Lane on Rat Race Reboot, and our conversation was incredibly insightful and inspiring! Miranda is an organizational leadership psychologist and licensed clinical mental health counselor, with a passion for integrating trauma-informed approaches into leadership and clinical spaces. Her emphasis on using self-knowledge as the key to meaningful work truly resonated with me. Miranda shared her fascinating journey with us, from her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at North Park University to her current pursuit of a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership Psychology at William James College. She highlighted the importance of leveraging both learned and lived experiences in her work, and the transformative power of intimate self-knowledge. One of the key topics we discussed was the concept of "use of self." Miranda explained that it involves bringing your full self, with all your strengths, vulnerabilities, and lived experiences, to your work. By embracing our authentic selves, we create a foundation for genuine connection and meaningful impact. We delved into why it's crucial to bring our whole selves to organizations. Miranda highlighted that it means embracing our values, passions, and unique perspectives, rather than conforming to external expectations. While there may be pitfalls, such as potential judgment or rejection, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Bringing our whole selves fosters a culture of inclusion, innovation, and creativity, and ultimately leads to greater fulfillment and success. Miranda's work is firmly rooted in values of courage, curiosity, collaboration, and creativity. We explored the distinction between simply "working hard" and doing "the work." She emphasized that doing the work involves going beyond the surface-level tasks and actively engaging in self-reflection, personal growth, and the exploration of our true purpose. It's about aligning our work with our values and embracing the transformative potential within ourselves and our organizations. I highly recommend checking out Miranda's profile (linked below) to learn more about her valuable insights and expertise. It was a privilege to have her on the show, and I'm grateful for the wisdom she shared on navigating fear, bringing our full selves to work, and the embodiment and alignment of self. At her presidential inauguration in 2018, North Park University president Mary Karsten Surridge referenced the nine men who served in the role before her noting that leadership at the institution had moved from bowties to neckties to pearls. As the first woman president of this urban faith-based university on Chicago's north side, Surridge's appointment is both historic and deeply personal. During our conversation, we hear about her leadership journey which includes a stint as a D1 women's basketball player and coach and an extraordinary track record as a college fundraiser. Surridge is laser-focused on helping the institution live fully into its unique Christian, city-centered, intercultural mission and the results are telling. Enrollment and fundraising results are setting new records, new programs are being launched and existing assets are being redeployed in innovative ways. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chelip/message
