Rodney Pell: Apples of Gold Radio Theater On episode 21 of the TSVP Radio Theater Podcast, we talk with Rodney Pell, producer and sound engineer for the Apples of Gold radio theater company in Huntington, West Virginia.The show traces its origin to Rodney's uncle, Bill Webb, who started out broadcasting a weekly devotional AM radio program nearly 50 years ago in Charleston, West Virginia.  Bill teamed up with his brother Danny Webb and together they started performing live theater plays of Christmas-themed scripts, which were followed by a devotion. After Bill died in 2013,  Danny continued recording old-time style radio shows which he distributed to area nursing homes.  The plays involve friends, family, coworkers, physicians, or whomever Danny can wrangle to sit in and read. Currently Rodney is marking his third year producing and engineering Danny's shows, as well as performing a wide range of acting duties as necessary.  Apples of Gold productions can be heard on WCHS AM radio broadcasting from Charleston, West Virginia starting the first Friday after Thanksgiving (Black Friday).  Take a listen to two complete Apples of Gold productionsThe Case of the Slaughtered Santa ClausesA Christmas Tree Delight and Danny Webb DevotionalSee Also:Radio Drama for a Good CauseSuper Duper Charlie Cooper Obituary Episode 21 of the TSVP Radio Theater Podcast was recorded March 25, 2022 at TSVP Studios in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. Continuing the discussion of his career, Grandpa Z opens up about the value of community and the struggles of maintaining a stable family life in the midst of a position that required him to move between states every few years. Though they were comfortable financially, consistent support systems were tough to come by for the Zmurk family during this time and he reflects on this often. Eventually they settled back in Ohio where they stayed for 20 years, and in ‘94 Grandpa took advantage of an opportunity to retire early-but shares how he found plenty of ways to fill his time serving others.    Special thanks to Monica Giorgio for writing our show notes and to Kevin Farkas for audio engineering.

In this episode, Grandpa discusses his career choice and employment in early adulthood. His first jobs included engineer work with refrigeration and manufacturing, but an unexpected turn led him to a GS position working on aircraft equipment at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. Some of his duties included analysis on adverse events and creating reports notating what went wrong in these incidents, and how to better fix it for the future. Grandpa describes the creative freedom given to engineers at the time to explore new solutions for things like solar panels, space travel and the like that he enjoyed being a part of. Lastly, he touches on the top secret work he did for the US government as part of a classified foreign intelligence program.    Special thanks to Monica Giorgio for writing out show notes, and to Kevin Farkas for audio engineering.

Our podcast has a name! Thank you to Dave Monsour for suggesting "At Any Rate" before he'd even heard the first episode. Episode 2 continues the conversation about Grandpa Zmurk's childhood and explores his heritage and extended family dynamics. We learn that he grew up hearing his dad sing often and Grandpa grew to love music, too - even teaching himself to play an instrument by ear without ever learning how to read music, a trait a few of his grandchildren inherited. At the age of 16, it was with the same do-it-yourself spirit that Grandpa researched construction to take on the feat of building a home for the family with his father. And, perhaps unbeknownst to many of us, we are related (by marriage) to a Harlem Globetrotter.    Please send questions and comments for Grandpa to tomgiorgio@gmail.com   Special thanks to Monica Giorgio for writing our show notes and to Kevin Farkas for our audio mastering   Grandma's Feather Bed Down in the Valley My Old Kentucky Home Beer Barrel Polka Let Me Call You Sweetheart Judgement at Nuremberg Ohio State Reformatory

In the House Where I Was Born   ABOUT THIS EPISODE On episode 7 of the TSVP Radio Theater Podcast, we present a faithful reproduction of the original broadcast of In the House.  Through the impressionistic narration of an “unknown soldier”—a representational every man—this radio drama pays homage to the common soldier and all who have died in military service. The show has been described as “a montage of memories—childhood homes, friends, family, war, death—that link the present with the past, the living with the dead, and form the cultural ties that bind communities together.”  Others have said that the play “conquers time and space with an ease and flair.” Written and directed by WWI veteran Wyllis Cooper for ABC Radio, the original 30-minute broadcast aired live on Memorial Day 1949.  Our current production is a sound-stage adaptation that closely follows the original story and sound design.  An added scene updates the story to include the Korean and Vietnam Wars, with special reference to Pittsburgh and actual lines from our oral history archive. This episode was recorded April 7, 2015 in the Cathedral of Learning, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Produced by Kevin Farkas, directed by Dennis Schebetta, musical Score adaptation by Pat Blackburn, script adaptation & audiography by Kevin Farkas.  Cast: Dylan Myers (Unknown Soldier), Nancy Bach (Mother), Elias Vila-Kubiak (Boy), Claire Sabatine (Bride), Ken Bolden (Brother/Father), Jay Londino (Announcer).  Special thanks to the University of Pittsburgh Theatre Arts Department.  Music available on Youtube and SoundCloud: Stephen Griffith (I Ride an Old Paint, Streets of Laredo), Meikel Krieger (Fender Strat with Suhr FL Pickups).  Recording and performance editing by The Social Voice Project.  ©TSVP Radio Theater Podcast/The Social Voice Project, Inc.  All rights reserved. ABOUT THE PODCAST TSVP’s Radio Theater Podcast presents classic, contemporary, and original imaginative audio productions, including recorded, staged, and live streamed performances before live audiences.  In addition to showcasing performances, the podcast is dedicated to promoting and celebrating the craft of local theater.  In 2018, The Social Voice Project partnered with the Merrick Art Gallery and the Rochester Area Heritage Society to bring three radio-styled audio performances to Beaver County.       OTHER WAYS TO FIND THE PODCAST jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('#slider_3507').owlCarousel({ responsive:{ 0:{ items:1 }, 480:{ items:2 }, 768:{ items:3 }, 980:{ items:4 }, 1200:{ items:4 }, 1500:{ items:4 } }, autoplay : true, autoplayTimeout : 5000, autoplayHoverPause : true, smartSpeed : 200, fluidSpeed : 200, autoplaySpeed : 200, navSpeed : 200, dotsSpeed : 200, loop : true, nav : true, navText : ['',''], dots : true, responsiveRefreshRate : 200, slideBy : 1, mergeFit : true, autoHeight : false, mouseDrag : true, touchDrag : true }); jQuery('#slider_3507').css('visibility', 'visible'); sa_resize_slider_3507(); window.addEventListener('resize', sa_resize_slider_3507); function sa_resize_slider_3507() { var min_height = '50'; var win_width = jQuery(window).width(); var slider_width = jQuery('#slider_3507').width(); if (win_width < 480) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 768) { var slide_width = slider_width / 2; } else if (win_width < 980) { var slide_width = slider_width / 3; } else if (win_width < 1200) { var slide_width = slider_width / 4; } else if (win_width < 1500) { var slide_width = slider_width / 4; } else { var slide_width = slider_width / 4; } slide_width = Math.round(slide_width); var slide_height = '0'; if (min_height == 'aspect43') { slide_height = (slide_width / 4) * 3; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height);

We'll Say You a Prayer | Charlie Frank   On this episode of Argot: Audio Short Stories from the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative Collection, WWII veteran Charlie Frank of Rochester, Pennsylvania shares a story about witnessing the fatal wounding of his assistant squad leader.   Charlie Frank, Sr. of Rochester, Pennsylvania was drafted in late 1942, picking up the 94th Infantry in Kansas for a year of training.  He finally came ashore in Europe D+94 at Omaha Beach, “still littered with helmets and rifles.”  Charlie and The Pilgrim Division would then endure more than 209 days of combat in the campaigns of Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. At 94, he’s developed a sense of perspective over the years.  “There was only about four of us left in our squad for awhile,” Charlie replies.  “I guess the good Lord didn’t want me.”  Did he ever think of the danger?  “I wouldn’t say that I wasn’t scared, but I didn’t pay too much attention to it.”   __________________________________________ The original interview was recorded July 20, 2014 at VFW Post 128 in Rochester, Pennsylvania by The Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative. When Your Time Comes | Charles E. Kelley   On this episode of Argot: Audio Short Stories from the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Collection, WWII veteran Charles E. Kelley of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania shares a story about flying A-20 Havoc attack bombers over France. After high school, Chuck Kelley spent two years at Duquesne University but enlisted in the Army in the fall of 1942.  He was not called up for service until February 1943. It would be five years until Chuck would return to his accounting studies at Duquesne, supported, like thousands of his fellow veterans, by the GI Bill. During the war Chuck Kelley was a bombardier, first aboard the A-20 attack bomber and then the newer A-26—the Army Air Corps’ supreme twin-engine tactical bomber.  By the summer of 1944, Chuck was flying regular missions against Nazi targets—sometimes twice a day.  He first flew from airbases near Corbeil-Essonnes in the north, and then Cucuron in the south of France.  Unlike the rotation for long-range strategic bombers, the mission quota for the more agile attack bombers was an astounding 62 missions. “Sometimes your could tell when I guy…just cracked,” Chuck says softly.  He would get quiet.  If the Flight Surgeon took note, the affected man would quickly disappear from the unit.  The other men understood.  They were respectful.  No one knew how they would react on their next mission.  “When your time comes,” Chuck recalls a common sentiment among the flyers, “you’re gonna get it.”   The original interview was recorded June 2011 by The Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative. This audio short was engineered and produced by Kevin Farkas.   SUPPORT LOCAL HISTORY Let’s keep local history alive for future generations!  If you like our podcast, please help us continue this great educational program--for today and tomorrow.  Show your support by making a financial donation, underwriting the podcast, or advertising your business or service on the show.   jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('#slider_3943').owlCarousel({ items : 1, smartSpeed : 0, autoplay : false, autoplayHoverPause : false, smartSpeed : 0, fluidSpeed : 0, autoplaySpeed : 0, navSpeed : 0, dotsSpeed : 0, loop : true, nav : false, navText : ['',''], dots : false, responsiveRefreshRate : 200, slideBy : 'page', mergeFit : true, autoHeight : false, mouseDrag : true, touchDrag : true }); jQuery('#slider_3943').css('visibility', 'visible'); sa_resize_slider_3943(); window.addEventListener('resize', sa_resize_slider_3943); function sa_resize_slider_3943() { var min_height = '10'; var win_width = jQuery(window).width(); var slider_width = jQuery('#slider_3943').width(); if (win_width < 480) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 768) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 980) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 1200) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 1500) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } slide_width = Math.round(slide_width); var slide_height = '0'; if (min_height == 'aspect43') { slide_height = (slide_width / 4) * 3; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else if (min_height == 'aspect169') { slide_height = (slide_width / 16) * 9; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else { slide_height = (slide_width / 100) * min_height; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } jQuery('#slider_3943 .owl-item .sa_hover_container').css('min-height', slide_height+'px'); } });

We Were Human Beings | Robert Rose   On this episode of Argot: Audio Short Stories from the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Collection, WWII veteran Robert Rose of Rochester, Pennsylvania shares a story about the cold during the Battle of the Bulge.     During WWII, Robert J. Rose of New Brighton, Pa served as a cannoneer with Battery “A” of the 574th AAA Auto Weapons Battalion, 13th Armored Division.  Patton’s Army.  After landing in France, he and his unit moved across Europe towards a particularly stubborn German entrenchment known as The Bulge.  Mr. Rose’s job was to take out enemy aircraft by engaging the swooping threats from his M16 Halftrack–those peculiar looking war vehicles, much like the front of a commercial cargo truck welded to a tank.  Atop the halftrack are swiveling machine guns–exposed and without much armor--but capable of striking the enemy at 7,000 yards. And there sat Robert Rose on April 12, 1945, feeding four, red-hot .50 caliber machine guns during an ambush at Urbach in the Ruhr Valley of Southern Germany. The guns roared, sweeping the surroundings, striking at everything and anything flashing around them.   And then a hot piece of well-aimed German steel knocked Robert to the ground.  “I’m shot,” he cried out before settling in and losing consciousness in the freezing snow and cold.   The original interview was recorded in December 8, 2012 by The Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative. This audio short was engineered and produced by Kevin Farkas.    SUPPORT LOCAL HISTORY Let’s keep local history alive for future generations!  If you like our podcast, please help us continue this great educational program--for today and tomorrow.  Show your support by making a financial donation, underwriting the podcast, or advertising your business or service on the show.   jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('#slider_3943').owlCarousel({ items : 1, smartSpeed : 0, autoplay : false, autoplayHoverPause : false, smartSpeed : 0, fluidSpeed : 0, autoplaySpeed : 0, navSpeed : 0, dotsSpeed : 0, loop : true, nav : false, navText : ['',''], dots : false, responsiveRefreshRate : 200, slideBy : 'page', mergeFit : true, autoHeight : false, mouseDrag : true, touchDrag : true }); jQuery('#slider_3943').css('visibility', 'visible'); sa_resize_slider_3943(); window.addEventListener('resize', sa_resize_slider_3943); function sa_resize_slider_3943() { var min_height = '10'; var win_width = jQuery(window).width(); var slider_width = jQuery('#slider_3943').width(); if (win_width < 480) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 768) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 980) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 1200) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 1500) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } slide_width = Math.round(slide_width); var slide_height = '0'; if (min_height == 'aspect43') { slide_height = (slide_width / 4) * 3; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else if (min_height == 'aspect169') { slide_height = (slide_width / 16) * 9; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else { slide_height = (slide_width / 100) * min_height; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } jQuery('#slider_3943 .owl-item .sa_hover_container').css('min-height', slide_height+'px'); } });

My Dad | Alex Sopka   On this episode of Argot: Audio Short Stories from the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Collection, WWII veteran Alex Sopka of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania shares a story about his Russian immigrant father, who was wounded by poison gas during WWI.     Alex Sopka grew up on the rough streets of Pittsburgh’s Northside, the son of Russian immigrants.  His father’s path towards American citizenship was to fight in WWI, where gas destroyed his lungs. Like many young men, the news of Pearl Harbor inspired Al to action but the government drafted him first–for good measure.  After an unhappy stint with an Army artillery unit, Al anxiously volunteered for infamous Airborne duty as fighting against the Germans heated up in late 1944-1945. The idea of jumping out of planes to fight the enemy seems glamorous, but only in Hollywood movies.  Once on the ground, if a paratrooper survives the fall, he then becomes a regular infantryman dangerously engaging the enemy nearby.  “Don’t shoot ’em until you’re up close,” they were instructed. Of course, the scared, young lads of Al Sopka’s unit carried out their orders as best they could.  It was tough going; kill or be killed.  Well into his 90s, Al Sopka still dreams about the horror.   The original interview was recorded in October 2012 by The Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative. This audio short was engineered and produced by Kevin Farkas. Music: "Gas-Microscopic" by Soham Kpiras, “Sonatas of Ages” by Peter Billie Larson (available on Soundcloud.com).   SUPPORT LOCAL HISTORY Let’s keep local history alive for future generations!  If you like our podcast, please help us continue this great educational program--for today and tomorrow.  Show your support by making a financial donation, underwriting the podcast, or advertising your business or service on the show.   jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('#slider_3943').owlCarousel({ items : 1, smartSpeed : 0, autoplay : false, autoplayHoverPause : false, smartSpeed : 0, fluidSpeed : 0, autoplaySpeed : 0, navSpeed : 0, dotsSpeed : 0, loop : true, nav : false, navText : ['',''], dots : false, responsiveRefreshRate : 200, slideBy : 'page', mergeFit : true, autoHeight : false, mouseDrag : true, touchDrag : true }); jQuery('#slider_3943').css('visibility', 'visible'); sa_resize_slider_3943(); window.addEventListener('resize', sa_resize_slider_3943); function sa_resize_slider_3943() { var min_height = '10'; var win_width = jQuery(window).width(); var slider_width = jQuery('#slider_3943').width(); if (win_width < 480) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 768) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 980) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 1200) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 1500) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } slide_width = Math.round(slide_width); var slide_height = '0'; if (min_height == 'aspect43') { slide_height = (slide_width / 4) * 3; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else if (min_height == 'aspect169') { slide_height = (slide_width / 16) * 9; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else { slide_height = (slide_width / 100) * min_height; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } jQuery('#slider_3943 .owl-item .sa_hover_container').css('min-height', slide_height+'px'); } });

I Have the Original Story | Jack Rominger   On this episode of Argot: Audio Short Stories from the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Collection, we hear a Japanese story.  Jack Rominger shares a story originally told on June 19, 2011 to the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative in O'Hara Township, Pennsylvania.  This audio short story is engineered and produced by Kevin Farkas.     It was written in English by Yoshuishi Okaburo, the brother-in-law of the story’s protagonist. The story is called, “The Family of My Elder sister,” and it describes the awful plight of one Nagasaki family from the point of view of the father (and brother-in-law of Yoshuishi).  Jack first heard it one quiet night while on patrol duty among the surviving homes of Nagasaki.  It was being used to teach English to Japanese children; a language primer of sorts. The actual text of the story was presented to Jack as a gift from Yoshuishi Okaburo, who eventually became a lifelong friend after the war. “I’d call this a morality play,” Jack says of the precious yellowing papers that he has preserved for over seventy years.  “There’s no mention of any hatred for us, the enemy.  What’s most important in the story, through the ashes, deaths, and terrible destruction, is the importance of peace.”       SUPPORT LOCAL HISTORY Let’s keep local history alive for future generations!  If you like our podcast, please help us continue this great educational program--for today and tomorrow.  Show your support by making a financial donation, underwriting the podcast, or advertising your business or service on the show.   jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery('#slider_3943').owlCarousel({ items : 1, smartSpeed : 0, autoplay : false, autoplayHoverPause : false, smartSpeed : 0, fluidSpeed : 0, autoplaySpeed : 0, navSpeed : 0, dotsSpeed : 0, loop : true, nav : false, navText : ['',''], dots : false, responsiveRefreshRate : 200, slideBy : 'page', mergeFit : true, autoHeight : false, mouseDrag : true, touchDrag : true }); jQuery('#slider_3943').css('visibility', 'visible'); sa_resize_slider_3943(); window.addEventListener('resize', sa_resize_slider_3943); function sa_resize_slider_3943() { var min_height = '10'; var win_width = jQuery(window).width(); var slider_width = jQuery('#slider_3943').width(); if (win_width < 480) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 768) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 980) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 1200) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else if (win_width < 1500) { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } else { var slide_width = slider_width / 1; } slide_width = Math.round(slide_width); var slide_height = '0'; if (min_height == 'aspect43') { slide_height = (slide_width / 4) * 3; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else if (min_height == 'aspect169') { slide_height = (slide_width / 16) * 9; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } else { slide_height = (slide_width / 100) * min_height; slide_height = Math.round(slide_height); } jQuery('#slider_3943 .owl-item .sa_hover_container').css('min-height', slide_height+'px'); } var owl_goto = jQuery('#slider_3943'); jQuery('.slider_3943_goto1').click(function(event){ owl_goto.trigger('to.owl.carousel', 0); }); var resize_3943 = jQuery('.owl-carousel'); resize_3943.on('initialized.owl.carousel', function(e) { window.dispatchEvent(new Event('resize')); }); });
