Art in the classroom helps to keep learning active - that's the subject of this week's conversation between Colleen and her guest, Ben Minnis, Arts Education Program Coordinator with the Lane Arts Council in Eugene. With fifteen years as an early childhood educator, a BFA in Theatre Performance, and ongoing work in ceramic sculpture, acting, and playwriting, Ben speaks from experience when he explains that art in all forms allows students to approach school work as participatory rather than passive memorization. Drawing on his experience with the inquiry-based Reggio-Emilia approach to learning, he advises educators to explore the different ways that students can communicate knowledge and understanding. Students are able to construct their own unique ways of learning by using art as well as the usual oral and written formats. Ben explains how the Lane Arts Council supports Lane County educators in these efforts to integrate art in their curriculum. Artists are paired with educators not only to teach specific art forms, but also to augment classroom learning with hands-on creative work. Educators are urged to contact the Arts Council for more information about the Creative Link, the Artist Residence, and the Design Arts Apprenticeship programs. I'm incredibly grateful to be able to share this episode. Talia Molé believes in the artist as a rebellious and revolutionary teacher whose purpose is to disrupt the status quo inspiring conversations that lead to greater questioning and awakening within a communal body. As an artist, she has dedicated her time to understanding social change through different social spaces and disciplines within academia and beyond. She molded and polished her role as an activist/scholar with the help of a B.F.A. in Theatre Performance, an M.S. in Counseling, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology and Social Change. Her field of research and exploration emerges from lived expressions of mother/motherhood/mothering, within marginalized populations, that serve as a radical remembrance of matriarchal ancestry, lineage, and community. Braiding multiple artistic mediums with counseling modalities and traditional practices (such as storytelling, meditation, breathing techniques, and image cards), Talia finds joy in facilitating difficult conversations, while holding space for healing and creative exchange. Her greatest goal is to continue using her artistry as a process of learning and (un)learning that inspires the disruption of systems of oppression, cultivates fruitful curiosity, and nurtures aesthetic platforms that generate collaborative imagining toward meaningful revolutions. Brendan Bradley is an actor and storyteller who got into real-time animation systems and social VR during the pandemic, and then starting putting on live theatre shows in Virtual Reality both onsite, hybrid, and in-venue, and fully virtual. He co-founded OnBoardXR, which has been embracing accessible technology like WebXR and social VR via Mozilla Hubs, which has enabled his immersive shows to be available on mobile phones, tablets, PCs, and virtual reality headsets. Since the beginning, OnBoardXR has featured projects that have integrated AI systems for generating scripts, and most recently Bradley put on a show called Degenerate VR featuring generative AI images that audience members within a social VR context were able to prompt. Bradley takes more of a skeptical take on AI deconstructing the current state of generative AI in relation to human labor and creativity as well as some of the potentials and perils of the technology. OnBoardXR has been on the forefront of integrating open web and immersive technologies for live performance, and is pushing forward on what's possible in immersive and interactive theatre. There is an experimental and avant-garde vibe to most of the shows I've attended, and AI has been thematically integrating into many of the recent segments. I had a chance to break it all down with Bradley at AWE, and we brainstorm a bit more on how generative AI could help facilitate group conversations and explorations on specific topics as long as there is a deliberate invitation or incisive question provided to the audience. There's a lot of potential for how some of these AI technologies could facilitate novel social social dynamics and interactions (see Frankenstein AI at Sundance 2019 and their subsequent AI-facilitated group discussions at DocLab 2019). Episode 195 - Mattico David is an Assyrian-American actor born and raised in Flint, MI. He is a veteran of the stage and has appeared in numerous Off-Broadway and regional theatrical productions.A graduate of the University of Michigan's Theatre Performance program, Mattico was a founding member of the Flint City Theatre and a regular performer at Jeff Daniel's Purple Rose Theatre Co., in Chelsea, MI. In this episode we discuss his upbringing, the audition to rehearsal process, and what working with other Assyrian artists has meant to him.
Alexa is joined by guest Louisa Morgan who teaches singing, spoken voice, and audition prep with a specialism in acting through song. She is the main voice teacher for the full-time acting students at the Cygnet Theatre in Exeter and teaches musical theatre students at Italia Conti. Louisa is a Vocal Process accredited teacher and is currently studying part-time for her master's degree in Vocal Pedagogy with the Voice Study Centre. Louisa is here to talk about her specialist subject of acting through song and that of her master's research project, which aims to challenge current acting through song techniques for the musical performer. KEY TAKEAWAYS The main challenge musical theatre performers face when it comes to acting through song is the synergy of the three disciplines. Generally, we train musical theatre actors by sending them to their singing lessons, then their acting, and then their dance. The difficulty is bringing all of those together and embracing that the singer will have to go out on stage and do all three at once. Another problem when it comes to acting through song training is that there isn't enough when it comes to the text-based approach. There is a big gap when it comes to the text that's in front of the student on the page. Where is their punctuation? Which words are being emphasised? Louisa finds that the skills she learned acting for radio are very transferable when it comes to acting through singing, especially on the script side of things. Add a double question mark when it's a real question, and cross the question mark out if it's rhetorical, highlighting their verbs on the text. When a singer is fully embodying the character and feeling the emotion we expect them to feel, it can actually cause problems when it comes to vocal health and on stage movement. Louisa is studying what people are listening for in the voice to make them feel that emotion. She believes the focus should be on making the listener feel the emotion rather than the performer feeling that emotion themselves. BEST MOMENTS ‘You shouldn't be approaching a song if you don't know the context' ‘Pulling out those verbs doesn't mean just making them louder' ‘If we could collaborate more in training institutes, everyone would benefit' ‘The job is not that we feel the emotion, it's that the audience feels the emotion' EPISODE RESOURCES Guest Website: louisajmorgan.co.uk Social Media: Instagram: @louisamorganvoicecoach Relevant Links & Mentions: Voice Study Centre: voicestudycentre.com Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 40 Integrated Skills: Teaching Singing to Dancers with Jennie Morton Practitioners Mentioned: Stanislavski; Meisner David Sabella: https://www.davidsabella.com/ Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Ep. 34 The Most Neglected Skill in Vocal Training with Phillippe Hall Acting Through Song by Paul Harvard Acting in Musical Theatre: A Comprehensive Course by Joe Deer and Rocco Dal Vera Actions: The Actor's Thesaurus by Marina Caladrone & Maggie Lloyd-Williams ABOUT THE GUEST Louisa teaches singing, spoken voice, and audition prep, with a specialism in acting through song. I expected that this episode would be a conversation about leadership development, maybe with some talk of Sarah's book Don't Feed The Elephants and how leadership in hybrid/remote needs to be different from what we've always done. Sarah started the conversation with "I'd really like to talk about retaliation." Wow. That's not a topic most people acknowledge as reality in work and to have a whole discussion centred on that? Yes, please. This is why I don't script my podcast. If I had planned every question, this episode wouldn't exist. There are lots of stories to give context to the issues we are highlighting. I'd love to know your thoughts. Don't hesitate to comment on social or write a review. In Episode 242 I talked about how to prepare a musical and shared four areas to get you started: selecting a musical, gathering content ideas, holding auditions and getting started with the first rehearsal. Last week in episode 243 I talked about how to structure and organize your rehearsals so that you can maximize the time you have to teach scenes and songs. Today it's all about the performance: creating a printed or online program, using checklists, pre-show warm-ups, exercises and chats, and celebrating the work that you and your students have done. I hope you've enjoyed this three episode series about putting on musical theatre performances with your students! In this delightful Eerie Extra, co-hosts Katherine Troyer and Toni Tresca talk with actor, educator, and theatre administrator Heather Kelley. We had the opportunity to speak with Heather about her current (and super cool) research on the narratives of ghosts--and ghostly encounters--at three real-world theatres here in the United States: the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas; Le Petit Theatre in New Orleans, Louisiana; and the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center in Waterford, Connecticut. Heather talks to us about the ways that ghosts give or deny voices to certain identities, how ghosts serve as manifestations of trauma, and how theatrical ghosts acknowledge the ephemeral nature of theatre. HEATHER KELLEY (she/her) is an award-winning actor, educator, and theatre administrator. She holds a BFA in Acting from the University of the Arts and an MFA in Acting from Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory; at the time of this episode's publication, she is a PhD candidate in the Theatre & Performance program at the University of Colorado Boulder. Heather's current research focuses on dark tourism, ghosts as manifestations of trauma, haunted attractions, mediumship as performance, and depictions of the supernatural on stage and on screen. If you are a theatre patron and/or practitioner that has experienced unexplained and/or paranormal phenomena in a theatre or theatre-related structure, Heather invites you to contribute to her research by submitting your story here (you are very welcome to do so anonymously). This interview occurred on January 13, 2023; the episode first aired on February 14, 2023.
