Today, on the David Knight Show, Gardner Goldsmith (MRCTV, Liberty Conspiracy) fills in for David, digging into the Joe Biden "Fare-well" speech, his fever-dream claims, and the deeper philosophical lessons about "government" it lets us remember. Are you "faring well"? How about innocent people in Gaza, or people forced to get jabbed in order to operate delivery trucks across and back into the US border? In Hour One, Gardner discusses the prideful Biden affronts to liberty that come to mind as Joe departs the Oval Office, and he is joined by Eric Peters, of Eric Peters Autos Dot Com www.ericpetersautos.com and they take the time to discuss freedom of speech under Biden and the worries of censorship under Trump, and the regulatory hammers hitting US automakers. In Hour Two, Gard and Eric continue up their conversation, covering the demise of Crysler, and the problems of government meddling in the insurance market, the dangers of tariffs, and the wickedness of so-called "sanctions" against foreigners and foreign companies (also, meaning against innocent, peaceful Americans who want to do business with those foreigners.) In Hour Three, Gard welcomes MRCTV Executive Director Eric Scheiner to the program to discuss the rattling death throes of dinosaur pop media as the old President leaves, and they look at the breaking news that the Supreme Court just unanimously upheld the terrible and clearly, clearly unconstitutional TikTok Ban. One of the most popular episodes of our pod was #12 from December of last year, "DECK THEM HALLS: CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS IN CLASSIC FILM." Because of the great feedback we got on that show (and because Steve and Nan are WAY behind on their holiday shopping), we're replaying that episode to celebrate the best time of year for holiday movies. We hope you enjoy it, and we'll be back next week with a brand new episode! Happy Holidays from all of us at "From Beneath The Hollywood Sign!" "DECK THEM HALLS: CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS IN CLASSIC FILM" (067/012) While chestnuts roasting on that open fire and sleigh bells ringing are nice, nothing gets you in the mood for the holidays like a good ole seasonal movie. Well, get ready to unwrap an early present from Steve and Nan as they share their favorite lesser-known holiday films. And along the way, they discuss everything from Clarence the Angel, French nuns, boxing nuns, ROBERT MITCHUM's drug bust, and millionaires tossing money out of their Park Avenue apartment window. Don't miss this holiday spectacular! This Sunday on Vintage Classic Radio's "Sunday Night Playhouse," we're excited to present a special holiday double bill. We begin with a throwback to January 11, 1943, for a Christmas episode of "The Screen Guild Players" featuring "Holiday Inn." In this charming episode, Bing Crosby stars as Jim Hardy, a singer who leaves the bright lights of show business to open an inn that celebrates holidays with unique performances. Alongside Crosby, Dinah Shore lends her vocal talents to the role of Linda Mason, who becomes the heart of the inn's festivities and the center of a romantic storyline. This episode captures the spirit of the holidays with its blend of music, romance, and festive cheer. Following "Holiday Inn," our holiday theme continues with the "Lux Radio Theatre" presentation of "I'll Be Seeing You" from December 24, 1945. Starring Joseph Cotten as Zachary Morgan, a soldier struggling with shell shock, this drama unfolds as he finds companionship and understanding with Mary Marshall, portrayed by Dorothy McGuire, a woman on parole from prison. Their story of seeking normalcy and healing during the Christmas season is further enriched by Shirley Temple in the role of Barbara Marshall, bringing an element of youthful hope and familial connection. Join us for these classic narratives of love and holiday spirit on "Sunday Night Playhouse," a perfect way to celebrate the season with timeless radio entertainment.

Be Seeing You is a roleplaying game about independence, control, freedom and compliance. Influenced by fiction in the vein of The Prisoner, Stalker, and Utopia, and real struggles against mass surveillance, the Hostile Environment, and the alienating effects of capitalism. The game is for three to five players and needs no GM. There are also additional play modes for solo player, and a two player versus mode - which feature new mechanics and change the feel of the game. Creator Tanya Floaker joins us to share more, and walk us through the game rules. Buy the game at https://floaker.itch.io/be-seeing-you

Arkansas native, Paulette Pearson, is a colored pencil artist who captures whimsy and humor in her drawings. She creates work that she says ‘reflects a unique blend of artistic skill and storytelling,' and has an eye for detail that harmonizes with originality, authenticity and depth. Paulette was born in Big Bear, California in 1982, the oldest of three children to Ben, an engineer and business/property owner, and her mother Paulette, an artist. She grew up on her family's ranch in Arkansas and as a child, her New Orleans grandmother encouraged her artistic interests as she quietly amused herself not knowing that one day she would become a professional artist. It was journalism and the law that would initially appeal as a career; Paulette earned her BA in English from Lyon College, her MA in Journalism and a JD—both from the University of Arkansas, before spending over a decade as a magazine editor—first in Arkansas and later in Texas, covering luxury interior design and architecture. Paulette met her husband Rich in law school, and after spending time in Washington, DC, the couple moved to Dallas, TX where Paulette most recently served as the Texas editor for Luxe Interiors + Design magazine. Once commissions started to come in and stores picked up her work, she knew she could become the full-time artist she dreamt of being so she decided to take the plunge and return to the art that she loved. Paulette recently held her first exhibition in Austin, TX. By combining realism with imaginative elements, she says: ‘ I invite the audience to embark on a journey of discovery, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur, and where every pencil stroke tells a story.' https://paulettepearson.com/Instagram: @paulettepearsonstudio https://www.instagram.com/paulettepearsonstudio/'Paulette's favorite female artistsJamie BeckBella McGoldrickInslee FerrisKatie RodgersCJ Hendry Paulette's Playlist -The Beatles – My favorite band of all time. Stephanie Bastek has been with The American Scholar for 10 years, where she is now senior editor. She hosts and produces the magazine's Smarty Pants podcast, with has just returned with a new miniseries called “Exploding the Canon” about the student protests at her alma mater, Reed College, over the mandatory freshmen humanities course eight years ago. The American Scholar plays a unique role in the literary-journalism realm: its writings often offer a response to newsworthy events but may do through an interdisciplinary approach that weaves in history or literature, for example, and aims to be far-ranging and reflective. In this episode, the first essay we focus on is Hugh Martin's “Shooting a Dog” from the Winter 2024 issue. Set in Iraq, it invokes a parallel to George Orwell's essay “Shooting an Elephant” set in what was then called Burma. In each case, the supposedly superior Westerner fears being seen as a fool by those he lords over. Similar tensions involving masculine pride, patriotism, and more, surface here. A second essay being covered is “The Lives of Bryan” by Jennifer Sinor from the Summer 2023 issue. The author's brother has had four previous brushes with death, before a heart attack ends his life. A distraught father's insistence that what Bryan has hoarded in his mobile equates to “throwing away a piece of your brother,” brings up issues of loss, transience, and the uncertain vagaries we all try to navigate as best we can. “An Outrage Sacred to the Gods” by Greg Afinogenov from the Winter 2024 issue explores his father's death, and the role of alcoholism as a death wish that the author struggles to overcome in his own life. With “I'll Be Seeing You” by Patricia Hampl from the Spring 2023 issue, being an outsider is front and center. Hampl has made a pilgrimage to visit a close associate of the writer Katherine Mansfield, only to be rebuffed, leading to a more fruitful connection with her guide for the occasion, an editor whose “pure homosexual” accent places him, like his American visitor, outside England's class structure. Andrew For America offers a description of people who are on the Far Left and the Far Right. He makes the argument that both archetypes at both extremes of the political spectrum show us behaviors that are very similar in nature, regardless of who these people feel their professed "enemy" or "God" is. Andrew also talks about the absurdity of the woke agenda, cancel culture, the effectiveness of propaganda on the minds of those on the "fringes," and he plays clips from John Doyle and Tom Segura to help illustrate his point. Andrew also talks about a Wake the Dead podcast with Sean McCann episode with guest Mr. Derrick Broze who wrote a book about how to plan and execute your way out of the system. You can find Derrick's work at: consciousresistance.com. Andrew also explains and defines Project Sandman and the "BRICs" countries and talks about recent news showing that Noam Chomsky was having meetings with Jeffrey Epstein! The song selections are the songs, "American Gestures," "Victims and Volunteers," "Bridges," and “I'll Be Seeing You" by the band Jughead's Revenge! The final episode of Delta Book Club. I'm going to miss doing this show so much, thank you to everyone who has contributed book and music suggestions, and thank you to everyone who has been a guest on this show. In this episode, I discuss "The Lonely Hearts Book Club" by Lucy Gilmore, some good books to read after graduation, and the short story collection "People From My Neighborhood" (and some better things to read). We got some nice goodbye songs in this one, "I'll Be Seeing You" and "For Good".

It is geared towards dystopian science fiction, social allegory, and psychological drama. The movies we discussed for our 2022 Christmas Special Subject are a little on the dark side, as all great Christmas movies are, but these one perhaps more obviously than ever. We paired Mitchell Leisen's Remember the Night (1940), with a screenplay by Preston Sturges, with William Dieterle's I'll Be Seeing You (1944), two movies about women who've fallen afoul of the law, and whose experience of falling out of step with society is contrasted with the comforts that bourgeois family life can offer. We zero in on the complexity of Barbara Stanwyck's relationship with her own morality in Remember the Night and the relationship that develops between Ginger Rogers and Joseph Cotten's traumatized soldier, who struggles with a different kind of alienation, in I'll Be Seeing You. We also discuss the way that the two movies associate the holiday season and spirit with the material and emotional comforts of bourgeois family life even while showing that the empathy fostered by the latter has limitations. Time Codes: 0h 1m 00s: REMEMBER THE NIGHT (1940) [dir. Mitchell Leisen] 0h 46m 37s: I'LL BE SEEING YOU (1944) [dir. Long before singer Cyrille Aimée spent any time on the road she was already a citizen of the world. She grew up in a small French town, Samois-sur-Seine, but says that she never felt fully French. She never felt fully any one thing. Her mother is Dominican, her father is French, and she says that “when you're a mixed culture, you're kind of your own thing.” Samois-sur-Seine is very small but in the 1990s of Cyrille's childhood it did have one claim to fame: it was the town where the legendary french gypsy jazz guitar player Django Reinhardt retired, and hosts an annual jazz festival in his honor. Musicians and fans alike descend on the town for the festival, and because of the ties to Django, some of them are Gypsies (Manouche in French). Riding her bike through town one summer day, Cyrille had a chance encounter with some young Gypsy kids that would lead to a friendship that ultimately changed her life. The Manouche taught her to sing, taught her to perform, taught her to improvise and see improvisation as not only a musical pursuit but also a kind of life goal. To watch Cyrille perform is to watch a kind of ecstatic manifestation. She's very physically engaged, her whole body gets involved when she sings. She says that music was originally an extension of dance for her and that since her instrument is her body, dance is still a vital part of her singing. That physicality is part of her charm. She's a natural performer. But she's also an accomplished singer, dance or no dance. She is naturally in tune with the language of jazz, bebop, funk, and soul. She's a precise and fluent scat singer, technical and soulful at the same time. Cyrille won awards and accolades along the way - she won the Montreux Jazz Festival Competition in 2007,was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2010, and she won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competition in 2012. Her 2019 album Move On featured cover versions of songs by Stephen Sondheim. The album was praised by Sondheim himself and one of its songs, "Marry Me a Little", was nominated for a Grammy Award. And a live stream video of Cyrille on Emmet Cohen's YouTube channel has racked up millions of views. Aimée released two albums in 2021, Petit Fleur recorded with Adonis Rose and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, and I'll Be Seeing You, a collection of duets with her long time friend the guitarist Michael Valeanu. When she's not on the road, Cyrille has been living between New Orleans and Costa Rica. We spoke about growing up in Samois-sur-Seine, what she learned from the Gypsies, moving to America, how to learn new languages, the importance of confronting and overcoming fear for creativity, how to be honest with the audience, and where to find good cheese.
#736 - David Martin The David Martin Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Okay! Everyone's here. It's The Paul Leslie Hour and you're welcome here. This is an interview from the archives with songwriter David Martin, known for being a part of the songwriting group of Arnold, Martin & Morrow. Now… David Martin lives and breathes the songs. Chances are, you've heard something David Martin wrote. His songs have sold over 26 million records around the world, but all stories have a beginning. For the British singer-songwriter, he began his career as a member of the group Butterscotch on RCA Records. Soon after, he formed a songwriting partnership with Chris Arnold and Geoff Morrow. The partnership resulted in many the composition of many songs recorded by the true legends of recorded music, including Cliff Richard, Wayne Newton, Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black, and Mama Cass. The legendary Elvis Presley recorded four of their songs: “Let's Be Friends,” “A Little Bit of Green,” “Sweet Angeline” and “This is the Story.” Quick side note, how many of you are planning on seeing the new movie simply entitled “ELVIS” releasing on June 24th? We can't wait… Now, one of the songs David Martin wrote has brought many smiles to the world. David Martin's song “Can't Smile Without You” would become a pop standard and worldwide hit after being recorded by Barry Manilow. Manilow was not the first, nor the last artist to record the song. The Carpenters, Engelbert Humperdinck, Vic Damone, Andy Williams, Gino Cunico and others would perform and record their own versions. The song has been performed countless times in concert, been featured in motion pictures. The song earned Martin three BMI awards for over 3 million airplays. Although HE continues to write songs, he is still very much a singer. He has a great admiration for the great songwriters of the American Songbook, those lyricists and composers who wrote the standards: Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer and Sammy Cahn. It is his love for these American classics that resulted in his album “Silky Smooth Moments.” Accompanied by the Terry Coffey Trio, David Martin sings standards like “I'll Be Seeing You” and “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning,” and one written by David Martin himself. It's a beautiful gesture from David Martin. Although he has accomplished so much with his own songs, he pays tribute to the great songwriters who came before him. We invite you into the world and passion of David Martin, where songs with great messages never die. They endure. If you get a moment, perhaps you'll help us out. Just go to thepaulleslie.com/support And we thank you! Now we present our interview with a lovely man, music's own David Martin. The Paul Leslie Hour - Helping People Tell Their Stories is a talk show with new episodes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Some of the most iconic people of all time drop in to chat. The Swedish folk jazz duo — Elise & Tobi — just released their award-winning music video Je te verrai, which is the French translation based off of the American classic song from 1938, “I'll Be Seeing You”. The backstory is quite interesting, however. They discovered a French translation of “I'll Be Seeing You” from 1945 and found that the French lyrics had been forgotten. A recording of the song was nowhere to be found, even though they found clear evidence that “Je te verrai” was extremely popular when it was first released in the 1940s. In order to ”give the song back” to France, they decided to make a new recording of it. The short film was made to reinforce the song's message and to put it in today's context. Apart from winning “Best Music Video” at Toronto Indie Shorts, the film has also been selected for the Montreal Independent Film Festival and has already been screened at the Berlin Short Film Festival. They also recorded the original song, “I'll Be Seeing You”, which will be released as a part of their album this fall. Elise & Tobi combine music production with film-making. Their first project together was a short film that was awarded the first prize in a Dutch film competition organized by the Heimans and Thijsse Foundation in Amsterdam. Between 2014 and 2016, Elise & Tobi were the producers, photographers, screenwriters and music composers of the documentary An Axe and a Blade of Grass, which was broadcasted twice on Dutch national television. The film music was written by Elise & Tobi and performed by them, as well as the internationally renowned Swedish baroque orchestra REbaroque and the Stockholm-based chamber choir Adolf Fredriks kyrkas kammarkör. In 2019 the duo released their first album, Tales of the Cobblestone, a musical tribute to the street as a public space and the people who roam it. In the summer of 2020, Elise & Tobi had planned a tour in Paris, which had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Instead, they built a mobile scene on wheels where they gave a concert tour in multiple locations on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. This week's show covers new music from UK poet and rapper Kae Tempest, pairing up with Brockhampton alum Kevin Abstract, a new synthpop banger from Mitski, a soundtrack cut from Little Barrie and Tony Coote, and Cat Power's devastating cover of the jazz standard “I'll Be Seeing You,” originally made famous by Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday who both covered it in 1944. For the archive pick this week, Mark selects a choice track from DJ Shadow's debut album, Endtroducing….., which came out in 1996 but still sounds fresh and extra-cool. (The blend of scratching and sampling woven together is superb.) The song in question is entitled, “Midnight in a Perfect World.”Of course, there are six more bonus tracks, but you have to sign up for our email newsletter to get those. It's pretty easy to do, if you just click this link. (And do so without fear. We won't misuse your email address, as this show is run by two guys, Mark and Brendan; Not some faceless corporation.) Lastly, don't miss our fabulous Spotify playlists. We make one for each episode of the show, so grab the latest if you are up to date, and dig into previous episodes if you are new here, or just curious. Have a great week!

Excerpt of the 16 Dec 1948 Kraft Music Hall starring Al Jolson. Dinah Shore joined Al Jolson on the show, and this segment features Jolson singing "Dinah," followed by Shore singing "I'll Be Seeing You," and both of them in a duet with "Put Your Arms Around Me, Honey." Oscar Levant is in the mix, as well, making a great ten minute podcast. The complete broadcast, along with other Jolson radio shows, is available at the Official Al Jolson Website at www.jolson.org.
During one of our longest episodes ever, we not only celebrate the history, happenings and colorful characters that comprise the 94 year story of the one and only Democracy of Ham an' Eggs, we also say goodbye to our dear friend, and devoted Breakfast Clubber, Darrell Hughes. We get into our audio time machine and journey to 1984 for an orchestral rendition of a song about Darrell's home state of Pennsylvania and to be regaled with humorous anecdotes by multi-Oscar-nominated composer (and conductor) Frank De Vol. Reverend Barbara Adams performs an invocation as she takes us down the path that leads to our continuing "Adventures in Friendship". Magician Michael Borys holds us spellbound. Great L.A. Times communications specialist Darrell Kunitomi offers profoundly stirring remembrances of Darrell Hughes the teacher, educator and role model. Robert Nichols releases Darrell from his duties as one of the Breakfast Club's heckling roosters. Don Snyder performs a breathtaking rendition of "I'll Be Seeing You". Brilliant author, artist, animator and illustrator (and good Ham an' Egger) Tina Kugler discusses her "Picture Book Process". Host Phil Leirness gets better acquainted with the Grand Cockleorum of the Roosters, Robert Nichols. All that plus Club President Lily Leirness initiates new member Tom Sanchez into the Democracy of Ham an' Eggs and previews the upcoming events taking place at the Shrine of Friendship between now and Thanksgiving. The Don Snyder Orchestra closes the proceedings with their final ever performance of Darrell Hughes' official Breakfast Club theme song. As always, host Phil Leirness and his trusty announcer Marc Hershon curate the entire affair.
"Just a little bit different." A different announcer, with a different introduction to the show... but our regular four plus one are on hand: Bob, Ray Sherman on piano, Jud De Naut on bass and Ralph Collier on drums. Our "Sweet Georgia Brown" intro leads into a really hot version of "'S Wonderful", then Margo Powers tenderly croons "I'll Be Seeing You". Another difference as we again hear Bob explain the next track "Miserlou" (Bob refers to the Jan August piano solo version, which had been a hit record just a year or so before). Margo comes back for an old standard "If I Could Be With You". The show wraps up with some great soloing on "C Jam Blues", before and after which our announcer gets a little... different. Every show an adventure!
