How confident should fans feel about backups at offensive line positions? And why was there a lot to like about the defensive line depth? With names like Joey Zelinsky and Zach Crothers performing in the absence of Jaeden Moore? Our duo tackles those questions, then reacts to major non-conference wins for the ACC over the weekend. Post-Gazette Pitt insiders Stephen Thompson and Abby Schnable react to the Panthers' 61-9 season-opening win over crosstown rival Duquesne. What can we learn about Pat Narduzzi's team after a blowout win over an inferior opponent? Is Eli Holstein back to his best after starting last season hot and petering off at the end because of injuries? Is Desmond Reid already staking his claim to another All-American season? Will the special teams give the Panthers a boost this season after Reid's punt return TD and Kenny Johnson's long kick return? And what can the defense led by Kyle Louis take from this contest into games against more challenging opponents in the ACC? Our duo answers those questions and more.
Which players can Pitt not afford to lose? Why are there so many freshmen on the two-deep? And what can we take from Saturday's season opener against Duquesne? We've got answers to those questions and more in the Morning Pitt Mailbag.

In typical fashion, Mike Greenberg is high on hopium when it comes to Aaron Rodgers and Mike Tomlin going into 2025. Poni listed off the QBs – some of which are complete bums – that won a playoff game more recently than Tomlin has. The guys don't think the Ben Roethlisberger excuse should still be used by pundits around the league. Chris thinks it's a tired argument from Greenberg and others on the subject. Former MLB pitcher and Butler boys' basketball coach Matt Clement joined the show. As someone who knows plenty about WPIAL hoops, Matt talked about TJ McConnell and the presence he had in the NBA Finals. Matt brought up a player that he had going to Duquesne around the same time TJ was on his way to Arizona. Matt said TJ has become a cult hero everywhere he goes because he's not supposed to be THIS good. Switching to baseball, Matt said there are very few players in MLB he would take over Paul Skenes. He compared Skenes to Mark Prior, who he played with in Chicago, but described him as a ‘step up' from Prior. Matt said what Skenes is doing is unlike anything we've seen before because the game has not gotten faster for him like it should have. How does Matt think the Pirates can get things jumpstarted more for Oneil Cruz and is it frustrating that we are still seeing mental errors from him? Matt said they need to be patient with Cruz even if it wears off a bit with each mistake.
Oneil Cruz was taken out of the game late last night due to lack of hustle. We applauded the move by Don Kelly, saying it's something we would not have seen from Derek Shelton. It's a good sign to show accountability. We talked about how it would have been pretty easy to sit Cruz again today due to his plate approach for the last month or so. Chris is annoyed that we are still doing this with Cruz this far into his career. Former MLB pitcher and Butler boys' basketball coach Matt Clement joined the show. TK made a funny comparison to The Liver King, who went off the deep end a bit. The Penguins hold the 11th and 12th picks in the NHL Draft this weekend – what should their plan be? Tyler wants to see the team sit back and make those picks then worry about that high pick next year. He said unless there is someone high up on their radar, there's no reason to jump up. TK got into what the Penguins are missing right now and what they could look for in free agency. TK went back to the sandpaper well and said the Pens need to add some. TK reacted to the Panthers winning another Stanley Cup. Will Erik Karlsson be back next season? Tyler labeled Evander Kane as a ‘cancer' as he was part of a deal earlier today.

Yesterday, March 25, 2025, the Cincinnati Reds played an exhibition game against their top prospects at Day Air Ballpark in Dayton, Ohio, kicking off their pre-season preparations for the 2025 MLB season. The game showcased the Reds' mix of emerging talent and established players as they gear up for Opening Day on March 27 against the San Francisco Giants. Matt McLain stole the spotlight early, launching a three-run homer in the second inning to give the Reds a commanding 4-0 lead, thrilling the crowd and signaling his readiness after missing all of 2024 due to injury. Elly De La Cruz also impressed, ripping an opposite-field single, further boosting optimism for the season ahead under new manager Terry Francona. However, the prospects fought back, with Will Benson tying the game at 4-4 with a two-run homer off Chase Petty. While full box scores remain unofficial for this exhibition, posts on X highlighted the Reds' offensive firepower and the prospects' resilience. The game served as a promising tune-up, with fans and analysts eager to see if Cincinnati's young core can translate this energy into a playoff push after a disappointing 77-85 finish in 2024. Richard William Pitino, born September 16, 1982, is an American college basketball coach currently leading the Xavier Musketeers. The son of legendary coach Rick Pitino, Richard has carved his own path in the sport. After graduating from Providence College in 2005 with a history degree, he began his coaching career as an assistant at various schools, including Northeastern, Duquesne, and Louisville, where he worked under his father. Pitino's head coaching journey started at Florida International University (FIU) in 2012, where he turned a struggling team into an 18-14 squad in one season. In 2013, he took over at Minnesota, leading the Golden Gophers to an NIT Championship in 2014 and earning Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2017 after a 16-win improvement. Despite an eight-year tenure, he was fired in 2021 following a 14-15 season. Days later, he joined New Mexico, revitalizing the Lobos with a 26-10 record in 2023-24, winning the Mountain West Tournament, and reaching the NCAA Tournament—his fourth as a head coach. Now at Xavier, hired in 2025, Pitino's career record stands at 247-186 (.570). Known for high-pressure defense and roster turnarounds, he continues to build on his father's legacy while establishing his own.
