Somewhere in Time Podcast open 2024 with a couple of leftover albums celebrating 30 and 40 year anniversaries. "Out of Step" by Minor Threat, from 1983, and "In on the Kill Taker" by Fugazi. Keith was the one to bring these two albums to the podcast but seeing that the hosts of Somewhere in Time Podcast are from the D.C. suburbs, it was fitting that these two albums get a proper breakdown on the podcast. LA's Germs were the stars of The Decline of Western Civilization, with front man Darby Crash frothing out his lyrics atop a sloppy punk stomp fueled by guitarist (and future Nirvana/Foo Fighters member) Pat Smear. John and Marc delve into their first 7-inch, 1977's "Forming" b/w "Sex Boy" (the latter recorded on the set of Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke, for real) with the help of guest Joe Gross, supreme rock writer and author of Fugazi's In on the Kill Taker from Bloomsbury's 33.3 series. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. Welcome to Spinning Out, I'm your host Josh Robbins. This is a podcast where we talk to guests about their favorite albums. This week on the pod we talked with RICO RENZI about Fugazi's 1993 album, "In on the Kill Taker." We talked about growing up in DC, Go-Go music, loving things for what they are, supporting the arts and local music, as well drawing comics. For those unaware, Rico is an artist, specifically a colorist who works on comic books, among many other things this man has touched in his creative life. He's worked for Marvel, DC, Boom, Skybound, Image and just about everyone really. https://www.nolongermint.com/ Follow us on social media -- twitter and instagram (@Spinningoutpod) Subscribe to our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/spinningoutpod Follow us on social media -- twitter and instagram (@Spinningoutpod)

Albums discussed are Metallica's ‘And Justice For All' (12:38), and Fugazi's ‘In On The Kill Taker' (43:30). This week's listener album suggestion came from Apple Podcasts user Latchkey Project. This week we’re discussing Fugazi, the band Mike openly calls “his Beatles.” One summary isn’t enough to explain the profound impact this band has had on independent music, but we will say that Fugazi was formed in Washington DC by former Minor Threat frontman Ian Mackaye and Joe Lally. The two quickly recruited drummer Brendan Canty and second guitarist/vocalist Guy Picciotto. Very few bands in the world have the raw chemistry that Fugazi did and the bond between each member shined through every one of their albums. We like them a lot and this is one of our most gushy episodes by far. Listen to this one before any other episode. And if you’ve already heard other episodes, pretend you haven’t.Closing track: “Shut the Door” from Repeater (1990)Check out our episode playlists on Spotify! https://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincMike’s Picks:The Argument (2001) — Best AlbumRepeater (1990) — Personal FavoriteInstrument soundtrack (1999) — Worst Album13 Songs (1989) — Least FavoriteAlex’s Picks:The Argument (2001) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteSteady Diet of Nothing (1991) — Worst AlbumAlbums we discussed this episode…13 Songs (1989)3 Songs EP (1989)Repeater (1990)Steady Diet of Nothing (1991)In on the Kill Taker (1993)Red Medicine (1995)End Hits (1998)Instrument soundtrack (1999)The Argument (2001)Follow Mike on Instagram @popejesseventura for show updates and @pandermonkey for original musicFollow Alex on Instagram @motherpuncher

In this week's episode Marc and Frank are doing another band spotlight and this time it's on Washington DC's own Fugazi. A band that really didn’t follow any certain style of music. They embraced Hard Core but was far from limited to its trappings and explored Art Rock, Alt Rock, Experimental Rock, Post-Punk, Reggae, Dub. They take a look at the first four Fugazi albums: 13 Songs, Repeater, Steady Diet of Nothing, and In on the Kill Taker. Find out the story and facts behind each of these classic albums from this very important band. Let us know your thoughts. We talk about their changing sound and the surrounding politics track by track. Recorded one long afternoon in Brooklyn this is the second part of a three part series. Although we host a 90s-focused music podcast, if you think Fugazi is a no brainer for us, think again. While we both had passing interest and exposure, neither of us were ardent followers of punk, hardcore or post hardcore during that time, and really only came to it years later thanks to our varied appreciations for bands like Jawbox, Sonic Youth and At The Drive-in. This makes revisiting Fugazi's 1993 third album In On The Kill Taker an even more enlightening experience. The band stretches their sound, we won't call it jamming, incorporating long musical passages that teeter on the edge of ambient dissonance. With their stellar rhythm section, the guitars and vocals play off each other with increasing confidence. Songs On This Episode: Intro - Returning The Screw 15:18 - Facet Squared 24:43 - Great Cop 29:31 - Rend It Outro - Smallpox Champion To support the podcast, join us at Patreon for bonus content and more. Brian Matt And Ron talk about the breakthrough album by Fugazi, also new songs from AFI and Bob Mould. PLUS... weighing in on The Godfathers Of Hardcore.

What's it like to be a hippie parent in the 21st century? In her new book, "Handmade Mama" author and Mary Makes Good blogger Mary Helen Leonard offers dozens of projects, recipes and tips for mothers and their babies-to-be. In this week’s episode, she chats with Addie Broyles about the many ways that families, especially in Austin, have elements of what might be called "natural parenting," from making your own baby food to baking lactation cookies for a friend. ALSO: Our music, comics and movies expert Joe Gross visited to talk about his new book from the 33 1/3 book series, "In On the Kill Taker," which documents the making of and significance of punk band Fugazi's third studio album. PLUS: With more than 122,000 followers on Instagram, Maura Ambrose of Folk Fibers has been featured in Martha Stewart, Vogue and Garden & Gun. In a visit with Addie, she explains why her passion for quilting and dyeing fabric has been more than just a business. Quilting might seem like a craft of the past, she says, but it's as vibrant an art form (and corresponding community) as ever. And in A Toast, we recommend the Italian sub at Home Slice, staying with hosts through AirBnB while on international trips, and The Line Hotel, which is replacing the Radisson at Cesar Chavez Street and Congress Avenue.
