Jaime reminisces about the bygone glory days of the Kingsguard. He turns his attention to righting the wrongs of the current White Swords. He goes man-by-man through his sworn brothers, calling them out on the issues he has with them. Lastly, he has a heart-to-heart with Loras about his claim that Brienne killed Renly. Jenny and Mackelly applaud Jaime's closing arguments.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister reads through the White Book, the written history of the Kingsguard, while waiting for his sworn brothers to join. When his brothers arrive, Jaime admonishes them for allowing the king to die under their watch. He then gauges their opinions on Tyrion's involvement in the death.He goes through each man and calls them out on issues. Ser Boros Blount will now be King Tommen's taste tester, as he's unfit to protect the boy he gave up so easily. He then questions why he's never heard of Ser Osmund Kettleblack before. After that, he asks Ser Meryn Trant to show him where in their vows it says to beat women and children, like he did to Sansa Stark. He praises Balon Swann's character but questions how he'd handle his family challenging Tommen's rule.Finally, he turns his attention to Ser Loras Tyrell,  who reminds Jaime of himself at that age. Jaime makes a case for Brienne's possible innocence in the murder of Renly Baratheon. His argument is enough to seed doubt in Loras' mind. Jaime and Brienne arrive in King's Landing. They've learned that bad news awaits them. Brienne is immediately imprisoned, while Jaime gets into it with his father and his sister. Simon and Mackelly hope for a bit more love and a lot less, respectively.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister arrives in King's Landing with Brienne, Qyburn, and Roose Bolton's men. It's not changed that much, still stinks. They've learned en-route of the deaths at the weddings (the red and the purple). Jaime is struggling to find the correct emotion. He cares more about how Cersei is feeling and feeling sorry for himself about his hand.Upon arrival, they meet Ser Loras Tyrell, who denounces Brienne as a kingslayer - of Renly that is. Jaime arranges for Brienne to be imprisoned (temporarily, for her own good). Jaime visits the sept, where Joffrey lies in state. He finds his twin mourning over their dead child. She affirms that it was Tyrion who killed Joffrey. They have sex there and then. Jaime wants to be open about their relationship, but Cersei roughly disabuses him of that idea.Jaime visits his father, who reports that Vargo Hoat is getting his comeuppance from Gregor Clegane, who has retaken Harrenhal. Jaime is to leave the Kingsguard, marry Margaery Tyrell (Cersei will marry Oberyn Martell) and take King Tommen to Casterly Rock to be raised away from his mother. Jaime flat out refuses. Jaime heads south while Brienne stays a captive of Vargo Hoat. After a night's sleep and a dream, his conscience pricked, he heads back to Harrenhal and saves Brienne from a terrible fate. Simon and Mackelly open their minds a tiny crack toward his redemption?!Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister leaves Harrenhal alongside Lord Roose Bolton. The pair split up and head in opposite directions, both sending regards to Robb Stark and Tywin Lannister, respectively. Jaime reminisces about his trip through these parts after first donning the white cloak of the Kingsguard. He learns that Vargo Hoat was unhappy with Lord Selwyn Tarth's offer of 300 gold dragons for Brienne's safe return.That night he dreams that he's deep in Casterly Rock, where his family abandons him to the darkness. They admonish him for killing King Aerys and allowing Rhaegar's wife and children to be killed. Jaime and Brienne share a bath. Jaime also shares a story that comes as a shock to Brienne. Later, they both dine with Lord Roose Bolton. The pair learn why Vargo Hoat cut off Jaime's hand, as well as what Roose plans to do with them both. It's good news for Jaime, not so much for Brienne. After a squabble between the two, Jaime tells the full story of how he came to be known as the “Kingslayer.” He reveals never-before known details that paint him in a much more heroic light. Brienne is speechless.After bath time, Brienne helps Jaime dress and then escorts him to dinner with Lord Roose Bolton. Jaime wants to know what Roose plans to do with Brienne and him. Roose explains that he has many options to consider regarding Jaime's fate. Brienne says he must let them finish their prisoner exchange in King's Landing. Roose says he's been told it was a prison break, and if so Brienne is guilty of treason. All that said, he does plan on sending Jaime on to King's Landing. First, he needs Jaime to promise to clear his name with Lord Tywin.Roose explains Vargo Hoat cut off Jaime's hand to dissuade Roose from sending Jaime back to his family, since Vargo is Roose's man, as Roose is King Robb's man. However, Roose sets her straight. She'll stay in Harrenhal, as Vargo's prize possession. Jamie's loses his hand and his will to live. Brienne helps him restore one of the two. Jamie returns the favor by sparing Brienne from rape. The pair end up in Harrenhal, where Roose Bolton has Jamie's wound tended to. Simon and Mackelly grab the smelling salts. Jamie, Brienne, and Cleos run into bands of outlaws. One of the three doesn't survive. The other two aren't in much better shape, now being in the hands of the Brave Companions. Jamie urges their leader Vargo Hoat to hand him over to his father. Hoat considers it but wants to hand-deliver a message to Tywin first. Simon and Mackelly clasp hands and hope for the best.Chapter Review:Jamie Lannister, Cleos Frey, and Brienne of Tarth have made it to Maidenpool. The town is in ruins, with dead bodies everywhere. The trio leaves and make their way down the Duskendale Road toward King's Landing. An unexpected hail of arrows claims the life of Cleos. Jamie picks up Cleos' sword and attacks Brienne. At the end of a long fight, the pair are surprised to find they're surrounded by members of the Brave Companions.Jamie mistakenly thinks they still support his father Tywin Lannister. He's quickly disabused of that notion. They now support Roose Bolton and the King in the North. Jamie fears Brienne will be raped by the men. He suggests she's worth a lot in ransom, hoping it will keep her save.When the group meets up with the main body of the Brave Companions, Vargo Hoat claims Jamie as his captive. Jamie tells Vargo it's not too late to come back to the Lannister fold. Return him to his father and Vargo will reap a massive reward. Vargo isn't opposed to the idea. Jamie and Brienne switch to horseback as they travel to King's Landing. This gives them time to discuss who is the bigger Kingslayer. Jamie dreams of his infamous act. Mackelly and Simon try to interpret.  Chapter Review:Jamie Lannister spots an inn and Brienne brings the boat to shore so they can sleep under a roof. However, the proprietor is a bit dodgy and after dinner they decide to push on immediately. The inn has horses in the stables, and Brienne blows a big chunk of their per diem on securing rides. This also means that Jamie's leg irons must be struck, although the vision of trying to get the horse to step his back legs over the chain to allow Jamie to shimmy aboard is rather delicious.The three (don't forget the always forgettable Ser Cleos Frey) ride through the night, scrupulously avoiding the route that the barkeep suggested along Get Robbed and Murdered Avenue. When they've put some miles between them and the inn, they camp. Jamie and Brienne chat about chivalry, vows, kingslaying, all the fun stuff. They don't really see eye to eye. Jamie continues to look for opportunities to escape.That night Jamie dreams of killing Aerys. How the king had ordered him to murder his father Tywin. How the tyrant plotted with his pyromancer to do some mischief (Jamie killed him too). And how he didn't sit the Iron Throne to claim anything, he was just curious who would be first to come and claim it. Jamie takes a river cruise down the Red Fork with family and friends. Well, not  exactly. He's been freed by Cat but still in shackles, having vowed to send Sansa and Arya home in return. Things go smoothly, until they don't. Only Brienne's smarts and strength save the trio from recapture. Simon and Mackelly pull the oars.Chapter Review:Jamie Lannister has been freed from his Riverrun dungeon by Catelyn Stark. He vowed, under dubious conditions, to convince his brother Tyrion Lannister to send Sansa and Arya Stark home in return.Jamie is still fettered and under the protection of Brienne of Tarth. His cousin Ser Cleos Frey rounds out the trio. They sail down the Red Fork of the Trident on a small skiff. Jamie antagonizes Brienne and she does her best to ignore the barbs.They survey the destruction of the Riverlands from their boat, until Brienne sees a tree with dead women hanging in it. The sight is too much for her. She lands with the intent to cut the women down and bury them. While in the branches of the tree, Brienne sees a sail in the distance and they hurry for the boat.Try as they might, their little boat cannot outrun the larger galley. Ser Robin Ryger and his crew make up the distance. The ship and boat play cat and mouse, until Brienne climbs a high bluff and pushes a boulder onto the ship, sinking it.Jamie thinks he's free of the big warrior woman. But she leaps from the bluff into the water. Cat muses on her duties while Edmure's forces repel Tywin Lannister's repeated attempts to ford the Red Fork. Riverrun celebrates as Tywin's army retreats to the headwaters of the Blackwater Rush, but Cat is uneasy. Mackelly and Simon consider Tywin's next move. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark sees her brother Edmure ride out of Riverrun to prevent Tywin Lannister from returning back to the Westerlands. She feels like she's done her duty all her life, but where her duty lies now is cloudier. News arrives from Storm's End of Courtnay Penrose's demise and the ceding of the castle to Stannis. There is no mention of Edric Storm, but Brienne has met him and confirms that he looks just like Renly, who in turn looked just like Robert. The seed is strong. In a separate letter, Roose Bolton has confirmed his plan to cut off Tywin's natural retreat, by taking Harrenhal, even if he has to kill everyone within to do so. He also hopes that this will remove the stain caused by the behavior of his bastard son Ramsay. Tywin's forces begin to probe the Riverland's defenses along the Red Fork. They're repelled again and again. Cat questions ser Cleos Frey about what he saw in King's Landing. She understands why the Lannister's terms were rejected, but is fixated on the offer of Jamie for Sansa and Arya. Frey admits he only saw Sansa, but Cat's not sure what that means. Tywin comes in force and after multiple pitched battles he is repelled and retreats south, away from both Riverrun and Harrenhal. His destination is the headwaters of the Blackwater Rush, the river that runs to King's Landing. The people of Riverrun celebrate, but Cat's fears only increase. Cat and crew arrive back at Riverrun to good news. Brienne has sworn to protect her. Robb's winning the war. Hoster is hanging on. Jamie is still captive and Ned's remains have been returned. Not withstanding some odd decisions by her brother Edmure, things are looking rosy. Mackelly and Simon get worried. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark arrives back in the Riverrlands with her entourage, including Brienne of Tarth. Brienne pledges her future to Cat, with the proviso that when the time comes, Cat will release her to get revenge on Stannis for the murder of Renly. They're met by Martyn Rivers who fills her in on what they've missed. Robb winning victories. The West getting some of their own medicine. Twyin leaving Harrenhal to engage. At Riverrun, she learns that Tyrion's plan to free Jamie almost worked, and the Lannister's involved hang from the walls. The place is overrun with smallfolk seeking the security of the castle. Edmure has pulled the forces from the Twins to bolster Roose Bolton's number - this combined force will take the relatively unguarded Harrenhal. Edmure meanwhile will attack Tywin's army as it passes close to Riverrun. Cat visits her dying father, he mistakes her for her sister Lysa  and recalls forcing her to marry Jon Arryn not that “wretched boy." Cat is curious who he means. Ned's bones have been returned. Cat prays for a quick and bloodless end to the war between the Baratheon brothers. She needs to be careful what she prays for because she gets mostly that. Renly is mysteriously killed by what appears to be a shadow assassin. But poor, innocent Brienne takes the blame. Simon and Mackelly examine the details of the wild night.Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark prays in a tiny sept to any of The Seven who will heed her pleas. She prays for safety and strength for her family and herself. She also prays to the Mother to watch over the men who will fight in the up-coming battle between Stannis Baratheon's meager forces and his brother Renly Baratheon's much larger army. While ruminating in the sept, Cat realizes that if Stannis' claim of incest between Queen Cersei Lannister and her brother Jamie Lannister are true, it gives possible validation to her belief that a Lannister sent the man to kill Bran. The boy must have seen them at their incest. Later, in Renly's tent, she proposes to Renly that they bring Bran forward to tell the realm what he saw. After the Lannisters have been discredited, a great council can be held to determine who should sit the Iron Throne. She asks that the battle be put on hold until she can similarly propose the plan to Stannis. Renly rejects the idea. Moments later, Renly's shadow raises its sword and plunges its shadow sword through Renly's neck. As the blood pours from him, the dying Renly falls into the arms of Brienne, who had been dressing him for battle. The commotion draws the attention of the guards. They rush in and see Brienne holding the dead king. Assuming she killed Renly, they attack. Cat convinces Robar Royce of Brienne's innocence, and he helps the women flee. Cat tries to keep the peace between Renly and Stannis Baratheon. Neither is willing to budge an inch, so Cat and the rest prepare for war. Simon and Mackelly predict the likely outcome. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark is first to reach the hill where the two sides will parley. She cannot see the sea, but can smell it in the air. In the distance, the giant fortress of Storm's End looms with Stannis Baratheon's small army arrayed before it. The siege looks entirely pointless. Stannis arrives and exhibits the coldness he's famous for when expressing his sorrow about Ned's death. He's not there to make friends (king's don't have friends, only subjects and enemies), and reminds Cat that Robb will be next once he's dealt with Renly and Joffrey. Renly arrives and the brothers exchange unpleasantries. Each offers the other the lordship of Storm's End if he'll support the other's claim to the throne. Neither will. So the talks come to nothing. As she leaves Melisandre warns Renly to look to his sins. War is inevitable and Cat wants no part in it, but Renly refuses her request to leave. He wants her to witness his army's power and his ruthlessness in putting down dissent (even from his own kin) so that Robb will hear of it. She goes to a nearby sept to pray. Cat arrives in the Reach to discuss an alliance with King Renly Baratheon. She finds him amidst a tremendous host, playing at being king with feasting and tournaments. His nonchalance is punctured by news that his brother Stannis has besieged, not King's Landing, but the Baratheon seat of Storm's End. Mackelly and Simon consider the internecine implications. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark awakes from sweet dreams of her family reunited, to the reality that she's headed further away from them. She and her honor/body-guard have skirted the troubles in the Riverlands and arrived safely in the Reach. Today will see them reach the upper Mander River and the Roseroad. She eschews a lavish breakfast to speed things along. They're spied and escorted into Renly's camp. The army is larger than she'd imagined, with banners from all over the Reach and the Stormlands. At the center, is the town of Bitterbridge and noise of a great tournament. Cat watches as an unknown knight defeats Ser Loras Tyrell to win the grand melee. The knight is revealed to be Brienne, the tall and homely daughter of Lord Selwyn Tarth. Brienne joins Renly's Rainbow Guard. Cat jousts (figuratively, and) politely with Renly who doesn't mind if Robb claims the title of king, as long as he ultimately bends the knee to Renly as the King of the Seven Kingdoms. He takes her to the tower so they can look upon his mighty host. She is not unimpressed. But his apparent primacy is challenged when news arrives that his brother Stannis has landed on the mainland with the focus of his attack, not King's Landing, but Storm's End. The North sends its demands to King's Landing, knowing full well they won't be accepted. News arrives of various setbacks. Cat determines to solicit help from King Renly Baratheon. Mackelly and Simon consider what Robb's next move should be. Chapter Review: Robb reads his demands of Cersei to her cousin Cleos Frey. He's to take them to her and return with her reply. They include the return of all prisoners, delivery of 10 highborn Lannisters as hostages, concession that the North and the Riverlands are now their own kingdom. In return, all the prisoners taken by the north will be freed, with one golden exception: Jamie. Bereaved Rickard Karstark doesn't even stick around to listen.  Cat tells Robb that he did well, but things aren't going great. The Riverlands lords are dispersing to defend their homes against Tywin's raiding parties. The main army is camped at Riverrun with no clear idea of a next step. Clamor is rising for an attack on Harrenhal, but that will cost lives and won't be easy. Robb wants Cat to go home to Bran and Rickon. She says she wants to stay with her father.  Later with her uncle Brynden, Cat learns that the Lannisters are building a new army in the West, which threatens to trap Robb in a pincer. They decide that the best way forward is to lure Tywin out of Harrenhal, but he's no Edmure. The only way to make that happen would be to create a new threat that he couldn't ignore. Cat determines to travel south and beseech King Renly to come into the theatre and draw Tywin into action. The King is dead. Long live King Joffrey? King Stannis? King Renly? Whoever! Ned and Cersei confront in the throne room. Ned is sure he has the manpower advantage to win the day, but then Petyr Baelish delivers a lasting lesson in the school of "Don't trust anyone." Mackelly and Simon take sides.Chapter Review: Eddard Stark is awoken to a Lannister show of strength outside his window, and the day only goes downhill from there. At breakfast, he allows Arya to have one last "dance lesson" but refuses Sansa a final goodbye with prince Joffrey, before the girls board the ship headed for Winterfell. The news causes an outraged Sansa to storm off.The day's downward spiral continues when Grand Maester Pycelle arrives and announces that King Robert has died. A heavy-hearted Ned convenes the small council (apart from Renly, who having carefully weighed up the situation has scarpered from King's Landing) and has Barristan Selmy break the seal on Robert's will. As we know, Ned is supposed to act as Protector of the Realm until Robert's heir comes of age. Before Ned can obtain oaths of allegiance, the council is summoned to the presence of the new king. Ned's helped to the throne room by Littlefinger who assures him that the gold cloaks are on the payroll. Joffrey demands a rapid coronation. Cersei tears up Robert's will and demands that Ned bend the knee. Instead, he reveals that Cersei's children are not Robert's and that the gold cloaks should escort the royal family to their rooms. The city guard do exactly what they've been paid to do, and kill all of Ned's men. Ned himself is taken into custody by Littlefinger himself.
