Mackelly and Simon ponder the possibilities. Chapter ReviewTyrion is passed from Illyrio to Haldon the Half-Maester and Ser Rolly “Duck” Duckworth, along with letters, chests, and candy for young Griff. They are welcomed by Young Griff who dyes his hair blue in the Tyroshi fashion - after his mother - but Tyrion thinks that it won't fly in Westeros. Griff the elder is far from pleased to welcome Tyrion. Simon and Mackelly consider opening our first branch of our Essosi travel agency.Chapter Review:Quentyn Martell tries to find passage from Volantis to Slaver's Bay. But despite the abundance of ships, nobody wants to take him. The autumn brings storms to the southern seas, and with the Dragon Queen upending the normal order of things, there's little prospect for trade with any of the cities in Slaver's Bay.He and his friend Gerris Drinkwater return to their lodgings, taking in the sites of Volantis. It's the largest of the free cities, sitting at the mouth of the mighty Rhoyne river. They consider their options: go home - Quentyn couldn't stand to return a failure, risk a journey with an untrustworthy captain, or go by land - the option favored by their final companion Archibald Yronwood. However, the length of the journey by land and the hazardous reputation of the road gives them pause.Outside their inn they're propositioned by recruiters for the Windblown - sellswords headed to Yunkai to fight Astapor. Send us a textTyrion and Illyrio Mopatis are trapped in a closed palanquin, hidden from the world, with just each other's voices for company. Mackelly and Simon try to imagine what that must be like.Chapter Review:Tyrion Lannister and Illyrio Mopatis leave Pentos in a closed palanquin. Nobody can know of Tyrion's presence or destination. He thinks that between the sailors and Mopatis' servants the word is already out. But his host is confident of their discretion. Tyrion is doubtful. Tyrion tries to unearth Mopatis' true motivations in helping Daenerys Targaryen regain the Iron Throne. The Pentosi claims that he just wants to help the young girl he fell in love with, that he was promised a Westerosi lordship and the role of Master of Coin. None of that convinces Tyrion. They're headed east toward the Rhoyne, where Tyrion will go south by river to Volantis. There Mopatis expects he'll rendezvous with Daenerys and her growing army. Tyrion will be accompanied by a sell-sword named Griff - who (again) Mopatis places an amazing amount of faith in.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister whom he recently murdered. Simon, Jenny, and Mackelly review the murder's banquet.Chapter Review:The Cinnamon Wind makes its way through the Redwyne Straits towards Oldtown. Signs of the trouble being caused by the Iron Born are everywhere, and the approaches are patrolled vigilantly. Samwell Tarly wonders if even Horn Hill would be safe for Gilly if the Ironborn are this bold, but he can't think of a better plan. When they arrive in the city, he makes his way to the Citadel to fulfill the two parts of his mission: to enroll and to share the news from the Wall. The seneschal's acolyte keeps him waiting for hours until Alleras (the Sphynx) points out that the man is expecting a bribe. Sam, triggered by this nickname, blurts his whole story to Alleras, who suggests that Sam forget the seneschal and the archmaesters. None of whom would believe him anyway, and instead tell the story to archmaester Marwyn.Sam agrees and by the light of a burning obsidian candle he repeats his tale. Send us a textAboard the Cinnamon Wind, Sam and Gilly mourn the loss of Maester Aemon. The old man succumbed as the ship neared Dorne. Their tears bring them into each other's arms and Sam's vows are history. Simon and Mackelly sprinkle rose petals in the bathtub and try to light a scented candle.Chapter Review:Samwell Tarly eulogizes Maester Aemon to the crew of the Cinnamon Wind. The Summer Islanders honor their elderly and their funeral rites involve drinking and love-making. The news of the dragons that Xhondo provided put a spring in Aemon's step, but it couldn't last and as the ship made its way around Dorne, he succumbed after a period of sporadically lucid dream and prophecy. Part of which was a realization that the Prince Who Was Promised is in fact Daenerys. Drunk on rum, Sam and Gilly make love in the women's section of the boat. Sam has fleeting regrets about his vows, but they're swept away by his feelings for Gilly. The next day the regrets are in ascendancy, and he avoids Gilly all day. Sam has paid for passage with the books intended for the Citadel, and with his labor. But the captain assures him that the Citadel shan't miss out - he'll sell them the books and make a healthy profit from them. He uses the excuse of work to avoid Gilly but eventually he's taken aside by the captain's daughter Kojja who tells him to go to Gilly or swim. Characters/Places/Names/Events:Samwell Tarly - brother of the Night's Watch, friend to John Snow.

The Iron Fleet decimates the reduced naval capacity of the Reach to claim the Shield Islands, which have long protected the mouth of the Mander River. The victors feast in the hall of the vanquished, humiliating and abusing prisoners. The scene is festive (if you are an Iron Islander, to anybody else it's pretty grim), with plunder and revelry for all. But there are some cracks in the facade of unity. Euron wants to sell the captives into slavery against the tradition of thralldom. He awards lordships of the four Shield Islands to redoubtable allies, who just happen to be mainstays of Euron's principle opponents.Euron wants the entire fleet to head to Essos to bring back the most beautiful woman in the world to be his fiancé, and to use the dragon horn to command her dragons. Between overreaching on their accommodation, paying for passage to Oldtown that they missed because of Aemon's ill-health, and the cost of a doctor to visit and tell them that a 102-year-old man with a nasty cough is probably dying - they've nothing left for food and fire.Dareon can make coin with his singing, but he promptly spends it on drink and women. Mackelly and Simon ask for a menu.Chapter Review:Arya Stark is settling into life as a servant in the House of Black and White. When asked by the Kindly Man who she is, Arya dutifully says “no one.” Invariably, the Kindly Man says she lies. The Kindly Man tells her she doesn't have to stay here. He can place her in other environments she'd find more suitable or put her on a ship back to Westeros. Arya is insistent she wants to remain in the House of Black and White. One day the Kindly Man tells her she must rid herself of her worldly possessions, as they belong to Arya of House Stark. That night, Arya takes them all to the canal and throws them in. She hesitates when it's time to toss Needle. Cersei meets with her new handpicked Small Council who blithely make momentous decisions with huge ramifications. Simon and Mackelly watch on in despair.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei is, not for the first time, disappointed to find the severed head of the wrong dwarf presented to her. She offers no punishment to the murderers for fear of deterring those hunting Tyrion. She and Qyburn head to the Small Council. He has prepared the skull to be sent to Dorne to satisfy the Martell's grievance against the now, presumably dead, Gregor Clegane. The Small Council is at full complement - with men Cersei has personally elevated not because of obvious talents for their positions, but due to perceived loyalty. It doesn't make for a very thoughtful meeting. They decide to stay out of the trouble in the Vale, but demand that no harm befall Petyr Baelish. That they'll ignore the flock of Sparrows that continues to descend on King's Landing. That they have no idea who the next High Septon will be. That the grumblings from the masses about the crimes of the Red Wedding are best dealt with by waiting for Lord Frey to die and hoping that his successor will give up a few rivals as scapegoats. That to pay for a new royal fleet the crown will default on its loan payments to both the Faith and the Iron Bank of Braavos. That Lord Manderly should execute Ser Davos who came to ask for White Harbor's support for Stannis' claim. That news of dragons in Essos can be safely ignored. And that Jon Snow has betrayed the neutrality of the Night's Watch by siding with Stannis.Cersei arranges a complex plan involving Osney Kettleblack seducing Queen Margaery, being caught in the act, sent to the Wall by King Tommen, murdering Jon Snow, being pardoned, and then becoming Cersei's concubine for his service. A tall order, but if he pulls it off, then a Lannister always pays their debts. She tells Taena to let Margaery know that the handsome Osney is smitten with her, but discreetly.  Characters/Places/Names/Events:Cersei Lannister - Mother to King Tommen, Queen Regent of the Seven Kingdoms.King Tommen Baratheon - Child king of the Seven Kingdoms.Jamie Lannister - Twin and lover to Cersei. Arya arrives in Braavos. Inside the temple of the Many-Faced God, she meets a man who isn't fooled by her aliases. He tests her on her fear of death, and she passes with flying colors. She hopes to feed a hunger, but it's not for food. Mackelly and Simon wonder what it is she's hungry for.Chapter Review:Arya Stark, or “Salty” as she's known by the ship's crew, sees the lights of Braavos on the eastern horizon. Soon the enormous titan statue that guards the city comes into view. As her ship The Titans Daughter passes underneath, she can see the defenses built into the titan. The ship's captain Ternesio Terys is all too happy to get rid of Arya, and has his oldest son Yorko row her to land. However, before he lets her go, Ternesio makes sure she knows his name and is aware of the favors he's done for her.Yorko provides a comprehensive, if slightly biased, guided tour as he rows her through the canals of Braavos. He leaves her at the stairs to the temple of the Many-Faced God. Arya tries the doors of the temple but they're locked. She shouts that Jaqen H'ghar sent her, brandishes the iron coin he gave her, and says “valar morghulis.” The doors suddenly open on their own. Inside, she finds statues to many gods as well as several people weeping quietly. A man sits by a pool weeping. Arya gives him a cup of water from the pool and he drinks it. He stands and staggers to an alcove between the statues. Arya notices a stab wound in his gut. She's met by a young girl and a man, both in cowed robes. The man asks Arya her name. She tries several of her aliases, but the man isn't fooled. It's only when she says she's Arya Stark of Winterfell that the man is content. He says this is no place for her, but she begs him. She has nowhere to go. He asks if she fears death. When Arya says she doesn't, the man lowers his hood to reveal a skull with a worm in the eye socket. He asks for a kiss, and Arya obliges. She then tries to eat the worm. It disintegrates and the skull turns into the face of a kind man. He asks if she's hungry. She thinks that she is, but it's not for food.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Arya Stark - Younger daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark.Braavos - A free city in Essos.Titan of Braavos - Huge statue that guards the sea entrance to Braavos.Multi-Faced God - A god worshiped in Essos. Daenerys has taken Meereen, but Astapor and Yunkai are backsliding. She forgives Barristan Selmy for his failures to protect her family, but banishes Jorah Mormont from her sight. She'll stay in Meereen and rule. Mackelly and Simon settle in to watch some dragons grow.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen surveys Meereen from the great pyramid. She's bothered by flies who've gathered to feast on the many dead, including the 163 she crucified as payment for what they did to the slave children. She meets an envoy from Astapor. The council she appointed have all lost their heads, literally, and a former (and apparently current) butcher Cleon, has made himself King. He offers his hand in marriage. Dany is distinctly disinterested. The second petitioner is a Qartheen trader. He has goods he wants to trade for slaves. He's surely barking up the wrong tree. Only Daario Naharis confirms that many freed slaves are down at the docks offering to reenter slavery. Dany begrudgingly allows it and imposes a tax on the trade to swell her own coffers.Next she sees Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Jorah Mormont. The former gives it to her straight. Her father was mad, Viserys had the hallmarks too. Robert Baratheon was a great knight, and could have been a good king. She appreciates the candor and reinstates him to her service. Mormont tries a similar tack. He spied for Varys for a pardon, as recently as Qarth. But this is too much for Dany. She banishes Jorah forever.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Daenerys and her host reach the walls of Meereen. She picks a champion to face the city's hero in man-to-man combat. She meets an old foe and is saved by an unlikely defender. Finally, she discovers two huge secrets and reels from the shocking truth. Mackelly and Simon thank the Seven it's not them who deceived her.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen and her host of freed people make camp outside the walls of Meereen. A hero waits for Dany outside the city walls. Dany sends Strong Belwas to face the Meereenese hero. The fight doesn't last long, ending in Belwas decapitating the other man.Later, Dany discusses ways to defeat the city, with her council. Nobody has any useful ideas, so she dismisses them. While ruminating on the task in front of her, she considers Daario Naharis. Dany fancies him and wonders what it'd be like to take him as a lover. She puts the thought aside and goes for a ride, with Missandei and Arstan Whitebeard for company. Dany allows her people to touch her, as she rides by. However, one man pulls her from her saddle. It's Mero, the former commander of the Second Sons. Mero moves to kill her but Arstan instead easily defeats him.Back inside her tent, Dany wants Jorah to knight Arstan for his efforts. Both men balk at that. It's then that Jorah realizes who Arstan really is. He introduces Arstan as Ser Barristan Selmy, a traitor to the Targaryans, for serving under Robert the Usurper. Barristan scoffs at the hypocrisy and tells Dany of Jorah's treason, selling information about her and her brother to Lord Varys, as part of a pardon agreement. Dany is angry and hurt and sends both men away. However, on second thought, she has a great use for the pair of liars!Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Simon and Mackelly ponder buyer's remorse with sellsword armies.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen surveys the host awaiting her own outside the gates of Yunkai. She asks Ser Jorah Mormont to invite the leaders of the three factions of the force to meet her in her tent, spreading out the meeting times so she can meet with each group separately. She offers the sellsword company the Stormcrows an alliance, wanting an answer the next day. She offers the leader of the sellsword company the Second Sons a wagon of wine to consider joining her side, again wanting an answer the next day. Finally, she offers the Yunkai envoy three days to send out every slave in the city loaded down with goods and gold. If they do as asked, they and their city will be spared. When the men have left, she tells her council that they'll attack an hour after midnight, while the enemy are distracted by her offers.Later that night, Daario Naharis one of the leaders of the Stormcrows is found in camp. Brienne is speechless. After bath time, Brienne helps Jaime dress and then escorts him to dinner with Lord Roose Bolton. Jaime wants to know what Roose plans to do with Brienne and him. Roose explains that he has many options to consider regarding Jaime's fate. Brienne says he must let them finish their prisoner exchange in King's Landing. Roose says he's been told it was a prison break, and if so Brienne is guilty of treason. All that said, he does plan on sending Jaime on to King's Landing. First, he needs Jaime to promise to clear his name with Lord Tywin.Roose explains Vargo Hoat cut off Jaime's hand to dissuade Roose from sending Jaime back to his family, since Vargo is Roose's man, as Roose is King Robb's man. Therefore, Roose should take some blame for the act. Jaime promises to make it clear Roose saved Jaime and Vargo acted alone. Brienne assumes she'll be accompanying Jaime on his way. “All men must die”: or “Valar Morghulis,” as the traditional Essos greeting is rendered in High Valyrian. And die they do – in prodigious numbers; in imaginatively varied and gruesome ways; and often in terror within the viciously unpredictable world that is HBO's sensational evocation of Game of Thrones. As acclaimed medievalist Professor Carolyne Larrington writes in All Men Must Die: Power and Passion in Game of Thrones (Bloomsbury, 2021), the stories George R.R. Martin brings to life are epic in scope and in imaginative breadth, telling of the dramatic rise and fall of nations, the brutal sweeping away of old orders, and the advent of new autarchs in the eternal quest for dominion. Yet, as her book reveals, many potent and intimate narratives of love and passion can be found within these grand landscapes of heroism, honour, and death. They focus on strong relationships between women and family, as well as among the anti-heroes, the “cripples, bastards and broken things.” In this vital follow-up to her book, Winter Is Coming (also published by Bloomsbury), Larrington explores themes of power, blood-kin, lust, and sex in order to draw entirely fresh meanings out of the show of the century. Carolyne Larringon is Professor of Medieval Literature at University of Oxford, UK. She completed her DPhil in Old English and Old Norse at Oxford and now teaches Old and Middle English literature as well as English and Old Norse-Icelandic languages. Previous publications include books on Norse mythology and literature and another book on the series called Winter Is Coming: The Medieval World of Game of Thrones. Also, Professor Larrington has been awarded the Order of the Falcon by the President of Iceland for her services to Icelandic literature. Carrie Lynn Evans is currently a PhD student of English Literature with Université Laval in Quebec. Learn more about your ad choices. Ten years later, Rhaenyra has given birth to three boys, Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey, who all lack the silver hair of the Targaryens/Velaryons. Viserys rejects Alicent's accusation that the children are bastards. Alicent tells Aegon that he must eventually fight Rhaenyra for the throne. Daemon and Laena visit Essos with daughters Baela and Rhaena, where the Prince of Pentos offers a lordship in exchange for an alliance against a resurgent Triarchy. Unable to give birth, Laena has her dragon Vhagar incinerate her. Ser Criston, now loyal to Alicent, goads Ser Harwin into attacking him by insinuating that Harwin fathered Jacaerys. This perpetuates rumours of Rhaenyra's infidelity with Harwin. In response, Rhaenyra proposes Jacaerys marry Helaena, Alicent's daughter, which Alicent rejects, and Ser Lyonel Strong offers his resignation as Hand of the King, which Viserys rejects. Viserys permits Lyonel to escort Harwin back to Harrenhal. Harwin leaves after an emotional farewell to Rhaenyra and her children. Rhaenyra, her children, and Laenor leave for Dragonstone. Alicent confides to Larys Strong she wishes her father was still the king's Hand, so Larys helps her by having criminals cause a fire at Harrenhal that kills Lyonel and Harwin. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tradepaperbacks/message --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rangerryan/message

In this episode Ender is flying solo and bring you his breakdown and analysis of episode 6 of House of the Dragon The Princess and the Queen. Episode Summary: Ten years later, the Triarchy has reclaimed the Stepstones. Rhaenyra gives birth to her third child whom Ser Laenor names Joffrey. Queen Alicent notes the infant's hair, like his brothers Jacaerys and Lucerys, is brown rather than Targaryen silver. She presses King Viserys to acknowledge them as bastards with no claim to the throne, though he rebuffs this. Ser Criston, now loyal to Alicent, trains the princes in swordsmanship. Alicent scolds Aegon for pranking his younger brother Aemond, then says he must prepare himself to fight Rhaenyra for the throne. Prince Daemon and Lady Laena visit Essos with their daughters Baela and Rhaena, where the Prince of Pentos offers them a lordship in exchange for an alliance against the Triarchy. When pregnant Laena is unable to give birth, she commands her dragon Vhagar to burn her to death. To make peace, Rhaenyra proposes a marriage between her son Jacaerys and Princess Helaena, Alicent's daughter. Ser Lyonel Strong offers his resignation as Hand of the King over rumors that his son, Ser Harwin, fathered Rhaenyra's children. King Viserys refuses, but allows him to briefly travel to Harrenhal with Harwin, who will remain there. Ser Harwin's emotional farewell to Rhaenyra and her children implies he is their father. Alicent tells Larys Strong she wishes her father was still the king's Hand. At Harrenhal, Ser Lyonel and Harwin are killed in a fire orchestrated by Larys.

Daenerys is sailing the Summer Sea watching her dragons grow. She receives ambiguous reports of the kind of men her father and eldest brother were, advice from Ser Jorah as to her next move, and possibly unwanted advances from Mormont. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the suitors and their suits.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen watches her dragons play above the three ships that bear her west towards Pentos, slowly. The dragons are growing, but remain more of a liability than an asset. In her honor, the three ships have been renamed for dragons of Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar.Arstan Whitebeard provides some dragon-lore from his time in King's Landing where he knew both her father and her brother Rhaegar. He treads carefully, but it's not hard to see his true feelings about King Aerys. And unlike most people, he has a nuanced view of Rhaegar. “Able above all else” is not the most ringing endorsement.Ser Jorah warns her to beware of Arstan - something's not right about him. But Dany has too few friends to doubt those who've saved her life. Ser Jorah proposes a plan to both test Illyrio Mopatis' loyalty to Dany, and to ensure it. They'll redirect for Astapor, sell all Mopatis' goods on the ships, and use that money to buy an army of Unsullied - the finest warriors in Essos - with whom they'll march to Pentos.Dany likes the plan and Ser Jorah celebrates by kissing her unbidden. A tense moment ensues.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon - Daenerys' dragons. The size of small dogs.Ser Jorah Mormont - Exiled former Lord of Bear Island. Daenerys' Lord Commander of her Queensguard and loyal advisor.Illyrio Mopatis - Wealthy merchant of Pentos who cared for the young Daenerys and her brother Viserys.Strong Belwas - Fighter sent by Mopatis to bring Daenerys safely to Pentos.Arstan Whitebeard - Westerosi squire to Strong Belwas. Seems to know a lot about King's Landing and the Targaryens.Pentos - City on the west coast of Essos.Summer Sea - Sea to the south of Essos.Unsullied - Eunuch slave soldiers. Daenerys fends off proposals of marriage and trade from Xaro Xhoan Daxos and accepts his insistence that she leave both his home and Qarth. She's given a deadly gift from a stranger but is saved by new friends bearing good news. Simon and Mackelly pack their bags for Pentos.Chapter Review:Xaro Xhoan Daxos tells Daenerys Targaryen that she's worn out her welcome in Qarth, after her role in the destruction of the House of the Undying. Many want her banished, some want her dead. Xaro makes one final proposal of marriage, which Dany rejects. He then offers a trade of ships for a dragon. Again, she says no. Xaro wants her out and his gifts back.Dany and her bloodriders head to the docks, in search of a ship to take them out of the city. Asking for much, with little to offer, they face rejection after rejection. Ser Jorah Mormont realizes that they're being followed. Dany turns to confront the followers, but is handed a box by a stranger. Without thinking, she opens the box to find a manticore. Before it can attack her, one of the men following her knocks the box out of her hands and kills the manticore. It seems the men who had been following her were sent  by Illyrio Mopatis. They've brought ships to take her, her khalasar, and her dragons to Pentos. Dany is grateful but wants the ships renamed to Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar. While lots of viewers obviously love the first season of Game of Thrones, it's the second season -- which first aired on HBO in 2012 -- many consider the beginning of the series' long-running and well-earned golden era. There's action all over the map: In the far-north with rumblings of 'A King Beyond the Wall,' in Winterfell and the Iron Islands, which stir with and fall victim to the spirit of raiding, across the Narrow Sea in Essos, where we discover a desert city called Qarth, and certainly at King's Landing, which is set to be invaded at any moment. There's a lot more going on, too, which is how Game of Thrones rolls. It's dense with characters and plot. Thus, we do the best we can to not only make sense of it all, but touch on the characters, moments, and arcs that stood out to us most, from the relationship between Arya and Tywin and the drama between Jaime and Brienne to the Battle of Blackwater Bay and the reignition of a fiery old religion.
